2426 What’s Your Surname? My Café at My Beach Resort Phuket - TRAVELINDEXPhuket, Thailand, December 23, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / My Café at My Beach Resort Phuket will take all gastronomes to a flashback of the past into an era when surnames were still new in Siam or Thailand in the current day. At that time, Thailand’s many delicious dishes still did not have prominent names and still relied on the Western culture and influence. Our locally made food was collectively called “Thai Food” from the development of the word “Eat Like Thai.”

Discover the origins of the name of dishes under the concept of “2426 What’s Your Surname?” a beautiful journey led by Chef Tai Nutchtakamol Songkhramsee, our guest chef, the owner of Tanya’s restaurant, and a figure widely recognised as the hidden jewel in Hua-Hin’s restaurant industry.

For centuries, inhabitants of Thailand did not have surnames, and all went by similar first names. 2426 BE was the first time when postal communications were introduced in Thailand and required people to be distinguished by the given and surnames, which were usually the given names of their parents. Therefore, when the postman went out to deliver mail, a question that was frequently asked was “What’s your surname?” in order to ensure that mail was delivered to its correct recipients. Comparably, Thai dishes during that era did not have names to refer to. Recipes were not recorded making it difficult to recreate dishes, and it was during this similar period that the first Thai cookbook ever recorded, the “Mae Krua Hua Pa” cookbook, appeared. This cookbook and other cookbooks during the same era had become the inspiration of our dining event along with the integration of Chef Tai’s family recipes passed down through generations, making this meal exceptional.

This dining experience at 2426 What’s Your Surname? will make you feel as if you were dining at a friend’s place, and they were telling you stories about each dish you are enjoying. Hors’ d’oeuvres will begin with Macaroni cooked with pineapple curry and dressed in horseshoe crab eggs, followed by a combination of old meets new – Steamed curried fish served in jelly form. The next dish as part of our hors d’oeuvre is a bite of Mun Luem Gluen, mashed potatoes topped with garlic and pepper shrimp. For appetizers, Kanom Jeen Poon or Thai fermented rice vermicelli dressed in grilled scallops and crab meat will be served followed by a soup, Tom Plong Talay, a traditional Thai tamarind seafood soup with grilled giant tiger prawn, squid and salmon. For the main course, guests will be served Khao Sao Nam and Mussamun Som Za, or rice in seasoned soup served with orange infused massaman curry with a choice of meat. The dining experience ends with a dessert called Kanom Chang Ma, or traditional Thai sweet rice noodles in coconut cream. Come and join us for a wonderful evening of delicious food and memorable moments.

Our delightful food journey presented in a 5-course meal is THB 2,500++ (excluding beverages). Experience 2426 What’s Your Surname? from 23 December 2021 until 16 January 2022. For reservations, please call 076 305 066

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of Michelin Guides, revealed: “Due to lockdowns and dine-in restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries, the restaurant business has been on its all-time lows. Nevertheless, Thailand sees the opening of new restaurants with interesting cuisine types – such as street-food-inspired stalls and authentic Thai food from ancient recipes. Local produce and ingredients have been incorporated in the menu, as diners are increasingly concerned about living healthy lifestyles and food sources. This not only ensures optimum freshness that elevates the cuisine, but also encourages sustainability in the agriculture and restaurant industries that help boost up the local economy.”

“This year’s Michelin Guide celebrates Ayutthaya as the latest city introduced into the guide – yet the oldest and with the richest heritage among all. In addition, this former capital city of Thailand boasts historical charm and retains among the greatest history in Thai cuisine. We are thus convinced that our local and international readers will enjoy exploring this extended coverage of Thailand’s culinary scene,” added Mr.Poullennec.

Six New Entrants Joining the one Michelin Star List, While the two Michelin Star Listing Remains the Same

In the 2022 Michelin Guide Thailand edition, two Michelin Star listing remains the same with 6 entries – namely, Chef’s Table, Le Normandie, Mezzaluna, R-Haan, Sorn, and Sühring. However, the one Michelin Star selection welcomes 6 new entrants, all located in Bangkok, namely: Aksorn, a Thai restaurant offering flavorsome dishes inspired by chef’s collected Thai cookbooks from the 1940s to the 1970s, with highlights including the coconut cupcakes with salted pork, and the fermented bean curd relish with minced pork and prawns;

Côte by Mauro Colagreco, a French contemporary restaurant with contemporary Riviera-inspired cuisine that serves lunch set menus, à la carte dishes, plus a special nine-course “Carte Blanche” dinner – an Omakase experience where every course is a surprise;

Gaa, an innovative restaurant offering an exquisite variety of Indian dishes transformed with modern techniques and presentation, plus a street-food-inspired tasting menu with a delightful balance of flavors, textures and aromas; IGNIV, a European contemporary restaurant serving up modern European cuisine – including its signature chicken nuggets and barbecue sauce – through a unique shared meal experience; Savelberg (new by relocation), a French contemporary restaurant offering à la carte and fixed menus that boast sophisticated modern French fare made from fine international ingredients; Yu Ting Yuan, a Chinese restaurant offering refined Cantonese dishes that emphasize nuance of flavor and strike the right balance of oil – with highlights including delectable Peking Duck and succulent Dim Sum.

Another 51 Eateries Included for the First Time in This Year’s Michelin Guide Selection
Apart from dining establishments awarded with the Michelin Star, the Bib Gourmand, and the Michelin Green Star; the official selection of the 2022 Michelin Guide Thailand edition also recognizes an additional 196 eateries that provide good meals, capably prepared with fresh ingredients and good cooking. Out of this number, 91 are located in Bangkok & Surrounding Provinces, 16 in Ayutthaya, 37 in Chiang Mai, and 52 in Phuket & Phang-Nga.

It is notable that 51 are first-time entrants (15 in Bangkok, 16 in Ayutthaya, 5 in Chiang Mai, and 15 in Phuket & Phang-Nga). Among them are Baan Suriyasai [Bangkok], a restaurant offering time-tested dishes drawn from royal recipes and bygone family favourites – including the savory 5-spice stew with boiled eggs; and the stir-fried crispy pork belly, fish flakes, and dried shrimp with seasoned paste; Phak Wan Noodles [Ayutthaya], the first and only restaurant in Ayutthaya where every dish is cooked using local greens called “Pak Wan” (Melientha), providing unique and pleasantly different flavors and aromas; Yangzi Jiang [Chiang Mai], a Chinese restaurant in a contemporary Lanna house, offering fresh, clean, and expertly cooked food – including the signature steamed scallop dumplings with black truffles; Juumpo [Phang-Nga], a restaurant offering many unique local “Baba” (Chinese-Thai) recipes – such as the Baba-style coconut milk soup with shrimps and Thai herbs, the chilli dip with shrimp, and the fried fish with sweet and sour sauce.

PRU Retains Its Michelin Green Star: The One and Only in Thailand
For the second year in a row, PRU – the one Michelin Star restaurant in Phuket – retains the Michelin Green Star for its sustainable gastronomy practices. As part of the restaurant’s initiatives, ‘Pru Jampa’ – PRU’s own farm that supplies vegetables, herbs and flowers – is where PRU puts the idea of permaculture into practice, while pursuing sustainability and supporting artisan producers. With seasonal, 100% locally sourced ingredients that determine its menu cycles, the restaurant offers a dining experience that combines culinary excellence with outstanding eco-friendly commitment, and stands as a source of inspiration both for foodies and the restaurant industry as a whole.

Ms. Chadatip Chutrakul, Chief Executive Officer of Siam Piwat Group, said, “Ten years ago, Siam Piwat completely overhauled its business strategies. We were the first to announce that our shopping centers would no longer be just places that sold products and services but would be venues that delivered fresh and unparalleled experiences across all dimensions that sought to inspire and offer endless value to people’s lives. Our business success was no longer measured in profit but rather by the ability to win the hearts of Thai and international customers. Since then, we have successfully transcended domestic competition and become the winner of numerous global accolades, making history and establishing strong customer bases both locally and internationally. Our success today is owed to the long-standing collaboration with our retailers and business partners, who are ready to move forward with us to revolutionize the industry and introduce novelty. Digital technology plays a critical role in business today as it has altered the business ecosystem and brought opportunities for digital systems to become interconnected. 3. Universe of Infinite Rewards: In collaboration with its partners and retailers, Siam Piwat is launching a new revolutionary loyalty program that uses the VIZ COIN – each coin equivalent to one baht – to elevate the shopping experience at participating stores both in the shopping centers and online. Siam Piwat is also working with the loyalty programs of its partners to empower users with the ability to convert the points in their credit cards and member cards into VIZ COIN, so that they can shop in a more rewarding and convenient way. The more they shop, the more VIZ COIN they can earn and immediately spend. Furthermore, Siam Piwat is shaping the ONESIAM SuperApp into an Earn & Burn destination for the retailers and partners in its global ecosystem.

4. Universe of Unlimited Experiences: Starting from early 2022, members will be able to carry out digital transactions related to digital assets and digital utility through the ONESIAM SuperApp. In the first phase that aims at delivering experiences that go beyond the global retail, Siam Piwat has announced its collaboration with KASIKORN X or KX as its first partner to establish Coral – Super Simple NFT Marketplace (CORALWORLD.CO) to support and drive advancements in art, culture, and lifestyle, both offline and online, by Thai and regional artists, and a partnership with ZIPMEX for the redemption of exclusive collections with ZIPMEX Tokens (ZMT). These initiatives will pave the way for the second phase, in which Siam Piwat will be working with leading partners, such as X Spring and J Ventures, to deliver a comprehensive array of digital experience within next year. Furthermore, Siam Piwat is also preparing to expand its capabilities to connect the real and virtual worlds on a metaverse by joining hands with experts overseas so that customers can avail themselves of a diverse range of benefits through a single source, with more business development and digital activities in the pipeline for the ONESIAM SuperApp.

For the development of the ONESIAM SuperApp, Siam Piwat has partnered with various leading tech companies, such as Transformational and Perx Technologies, to create unprecedented digital experiences beneficial to both retailers and partners. This dish is a celebration of flavours, making it the perfect meal to mark the end of the year.

Secret Top Chef tip for the perfect grilled steak is to rest the beef after cooking, this will help keep the juices locked in. Resting meat after cooking is essential for tender, juicy results every time, it allows the beef cut to reabsorb and distribute the juices that have been constricted during the cooking process. If you were to cut a beef right off the grill, you’ll notice that the internal juices immediately run out of it, leaving you with a dry and tough final product. So, remember to be like a Top Chef…rest first, then enjoy.

Phetchaburi Honoured with UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy Status - TRAVELINDEXPhetchaburi, Thailand, November 26, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to report that Phetchaburi Province has been accepted as Thailand’s latest member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the field of Gastronomy.

Prepare for the Visit Thailand Year 2022 and Visit Thailand – Be Happy, at VisitThailand.net

Phetchaburi is the fifth province in Thailand to have earned the UCCN title, after Phuket was named a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015, Chiang Mai a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts in 2017, Bangkok a Creative City of Design in 2019 and Sukhothai a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts in 2019.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said, “The addition of Phetchaburi to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Gastronomy is much welcomed and could not have come at a better time, with Gastronomy featuring as a key element of the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022’ new tourism marketing campaign.”

Located around 160 km south of Bangkok, Phetchaburi is known for the production of high quality sea salt and key limes, palm sugar, rose apples, pineapples and bananas among other items, giving it the nickname ‘City of Three Tastes’ – for salty, sweet and sour. The farm-to-fork practice is also in use in the province, where farmers deliver fresh produce and seafood direct to food outlets and manufacturers as well as local households.

Phetchaburi is synonymous with a number of local dishes having gained particular popularity and for its production of certain food products. Local recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, cuisine from the royal courts of Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin, and Chinese and Mon cuisine have combined into dishes unique to Phetchaburi.

Among the well-known dishes that reflect Phetchaburi’s cultural roots are Kaeng Kua Hua Tan (toddy palm curry), Khanom Cheen Thotman (fermented rice-flour noodles with fried fish cake), Khao Chae (rice soaked in water accompanied by a variety of side dishes) and Kuaitiao Nam Daeng (red-soup noodles).

Tourists visiting Phetchaburi can combine the delectable cuisine on offer with exploration of the various attractions. These include Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park or as it’s also known locally Khao Wang (meaning ‘hill with palace’) with its palace and temple buildings on a hill overlooking the city; the temples Wat Mahathat Worawihan, Wat Kamphaeng Laeng, Wat Yai Suwannaram; and picturesque beaches the most famous being Cha-am.

Last but not least, Kaeng Krachan National Park which covers part of Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Ratchaburi provinces, at 464,000 hectares is the largest national park in Thailand, and is known for its wildlife watching, hiking and ‘sea of mist’ views during the cooler months of November to February. It is also home to Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex which was recently added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

These cities work together toward a common objective – placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.

Following the adversities brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Thai government has recently shared their new focus to restore confidence amongst locals with several domestic and international projects throughout the country. This comes following the decision from Thai authorities coinciding with the reopening of the country with eased regulations for fully vaccinated travelers from 63 low-risk countries. This is to support the mission to reboot Thailand’s tourism industry as it is on the road to positive recovery after 18 months of COVID-19 restrictions.

In this regard, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in partnership with the Sports Authority of Thailand and related agencies have teamed up to support international sporting events, including the Honda LPGA Thailand 2022, to resume in Thailand. This decision comes with the motivation that these respective events will effectively promote a positive image of Thailand’s internationally acclaimed golf tourism sector. We are extremely grateful for the support of our partners and sponsors that have motivated us to lead the way for the comeback of events as the industry continues to pivot with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic”, Ms. Heng added.
