New Ideas Hatching in the Bird’s Nest

Weeva Celebrates as Sustainable Travel Continues to Top Consumer Priorities - TOP25HOTELS.comKRABI, Thailand (Oct. 17, 2023) — Banyan Tree Krabi, a luxury 72-key resort situated on secluded TubKaek Beach, has revealed a menu resplendent in local recipes, reflecting the rich culinary culture of Southern Thailand, and served in one of the country’s most Instagrammable locations.

Ever since opening in 2020, the three “Bird’s Nest” tables — which sit perched on a craggy cliff near the peak of the resort and command spectacular views overlooking the Andaman Sea and the distant uninhabited islands of a national marine park — have been favourites with hotel guests, passing tourists, and locals alike. Bookings for a table are often made weeks or months in advance.

Attached by a short walkway to Banyan Tree Krabi’s signature Thai restaurant, Saffron, which is in turn accessible from the resort by a 60-second ride in an electric funicular, the panoramic trio of Bird’s Eye tables are quite possibly one of the most outstanding features that prompted guests to vote Banyan Tree Krabi as No 4 Resort in Thailand at this year’s Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards.

“The Bird’s Nests are unique and unlike anywhere else in Krabi,” said Executive Chef Khachathat Tairattaphon, known affectionately around the resort as Chef Tum. “These tables offer diners a wonderful atmosphere that is quite nostalgic, especially during the last rays of the sun. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail, followed by some unique meals that have been created specifically for this occasion.”

By Land, By Sea  New Menus at the Bird’s Nest

Beginning October 15, 2023, the Bird’s Nest is featuring four new set menus, each reflective of local produce and culinary traditions, with every dish carefully refined by Chef Tum into intricate recipes and presented in exquisite style.

“By Land” is the theme of the “Tantalizing Turf” four-course menu, a veritable feast of flavours, starting with an appetiser choice of either Spicy Lemongrass Salad with Tiger Prawn Mousse or Banana Flower Steamed Bun with Grilled Chicken & Fried Local Vegetables. The second course is a spicy Thai soup (southern Thai cuisine is often said to be the spiciest in Thailand) with sea bass. The main course is a mouthwatering Sous Vide Lamb with A-Jad Pineapple, and a dessert and sorbet will round off a delicious dining sensation.

Chef Tum likes to call the “By Sea” menu his “Symphony of the Sea”, and you can hear echoes of his time at Bangkok’s reputed Sukhothai Hotel, where he trained with several Michelin-star chefs, in his latest creation, the Baked Lobster with Panang Curry Fruit Sauce, an aromatic but delicately light entrée.

The third Bird’s Nest menu is the vegetarian “Garden Delights”, starting with Dumplings Stuffed with Grains and Mango Passion Fruit Sauce. Perhaps emblematic of the Banyan Tree Group’s reputation for and commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness, is the menu’s main course, Grilled Soybean Tofu, Sweet Peas with Green Curry Sauce, which is created from organic ingredients purchased from the local Krabi area.

Bird’s Nest guests’ have a fourth set menu to choose from  titled “A Touch of Opulence”. Like the other menus, it offers a choice of appetizer and a spicy soup, but as a main, Chef Tum has called on a favourite Chiang Mai dish, the ever-popular coconut milk-based curry khao soi. Chef’s original Beef Khao Soi and Lap Pu Croquettes with Plant-Based Sausages is as lip-smacking as it sounds.

Afternoon Tea?

Evening dining at the three Bird’s Nest tables is from 6pm to 11pm daily, and guests are advised to book as far in advance as possible due to popularity. As an outdoor venue, shaded by trees and aided by a sea breeze, attire is smart-casual.

However, for those who miss out on a dinner dining experience, an alternative exists that is equally as photogenic: afternoon tea. Bird’s Nest table reservations can be made for either 2pm – 3:30 pm or 3:30 pm – 5pm. Ideal for special occasions such as anniversaries or birthdays, an afternoon tea invite at the Bird’s Nest is truly a treat waiting to happen: from a Thai Set with crunchy coconut in betel leaves to a Champagne Set to the timeless Traditional English Afternoon Tea with Earl Grey and scones, smoked salmon sandwiches, chocolate truffles and blueberry cheesecake, this is a surely an enviable moment to be captured and posted to friends and family at home.

Krabi Hotel Invites Guests to Stay for Good

900 648 wttc2

Krabi Hotel Invites Guests to Stay for Good - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25HOTELS.comKrabi, Thailand, July 12, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX /Banyan Tree Krabi, a luxury 72-key resort situated on secluded Tubkaek Beach, is encouraging its visitors to immerse themselves in the local Southern Thai culture, by joining weekly excursions to a nearby island renowned for producing beautiful batik fabrics and woodcrafts.

The initiative is part of the Banyan Tree Group’s “Stay for Good” programme, launched two months ago, aimed at enticing guests at 5-star hotels worldwide to roll up their sleeves and join neighbouring villagers at work.

At the Balinese property of Buahan, A Banyan Tree Escape, for example, guests spend a day with local farmers, foraging for fruits and edible plants, while at Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto in Japan, visitors learn how to entwine grass to make traditional thatched roofs for villagers’ homes.

“At Banyan Tree Krabi, we invite our guests to embark on a day’s adventure at the quiet fishing town of Ban Koh Klang on a small island in the middle of the Krabi River,” said Sustainability Manager Ms Thepsuda Loyjiw. “It’s a great opportunity to travel by traditional longtail boat along the river where they might spot some rare bird species and wild monkeys among the mangroves. The island itself is a spectacular natural setting and among the hidden gems we visit is a series of majestic limestone caves.”

A lunch, inspired by home-grown fruits, vegetables and recipes passed down from one generation to the next, is served on a floating restaurant among the mangroves, then the guests meet the villagers and interact.

Among the daily pursuits the foreign visitors can experience are: joining the local craftsmen who intricately carve and create wooden models of longtail boats, which are sold in Krabi as souvenirs; and sitting with the women of Ban Koh Klang who are veterans of batik art, mixing organic dyes and skillfully painting colourful fabrics. Harvesting rice in the fields with a local family is included as a seasonal activity.

Launching the programme in May, Banyan Tree said it hopes the visits will “encourage a deeper connection with each destination while honouring the heritage and traditions and contribute to creating more opportunities for local communities.”

Constantly vying to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint, in December Banyan Tree Krabi partnered with a local artisan, Souvenirs From the Sea, a project involving beachcombing for refuse and waste products that could be upcycled into sellable items such as tote bags.

Banyan Tree Krabi’s other recent sustainability initiatives include an Earth Day beach clean-up, and the introduction of Forest Bathing, a nature-based educational tour for guests, including children, to help raise awareness about environmental conservation and protecting local flora and fauna.

“Of course, many guests come to a serene destination to relax, to enjoy cocktails at sunset, spa treatments, and wining and dining,” said Loyjiw. “However, they also want to see the local customs, and nothing feels better than giving something back to the community.”

Banyan Tree Krabi Appoints New General Manager

1080 720 wttc2

Banyan Tree Krabi Appoints New General Manager - TRAVELINDEXKrabi, Thailand, January 30, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts has announced that Mr Nigel Fisher, an Australian national with 37 years’ experience in luxury hotel management across Asia and Australia, has been appointed General Manager of its beachfront resort in Krabi, which opened in October 2020.

After graduating from Switzerland’s prestigious École hôtelière de Lausanne in 1985, Fisher returned to Australia to join Hyatt International Hotels, where he would spend the next 15 years. In the 2000s, he was Resident Manager at the Four Seasons Sydney and at the Great Barrier Reef’s Hayman Island.

He took on the role of General Manager at leading hotels in Malaysia and the Philippines before moving to Banyan Tree in 2015. From his first post at Banyan Tree Huangshan in China, he stepped up as Area GM for Lijiang and Ringha. Fisher oversaw the opening of the Angsana Penang, before being lured across the border to southern Thailand.

“Nigel is a seasoned professional with a passion for Asian culture and a strong command of Asian values,” said Remko Kroesen, the Area General Manager for Banyan Tree Samui and Banyan Tree Krabi. “He brings a wealth of experience from some of the world’s top hotels — knowledge which will be instrumental in establishing Banyan Tree Krabi as a leading resort in the region.”

No one doubts that taking the helm of a new 5-star hotel during the time of a global pandemic will present its own set of challenges, added Kroesen. “However, Banyan Tree Krabi is a pristine new resort with the highest standards of health and hygiene management. When this Covid crisis has finally run its course, travellers from all over the world will be thirsty for a tropical paradise, and we want to make sure we have a red carpet rolled out for them,” he said.

Located on secluded Tubkaek Beach, Banyan Tree Krabi is flanked to the rear by a forested national park while facing out towards a sea of karst limestone towers — undoubtedly one of Thailand’s most iconic and enduring images — which are uninhabited and protected as a national marine park. The hotel is tiered into a lush landscape, all of which is dominated by a rollercoaster of mountains.

The resort offers 72 pool suites and villas, among them seven two-bedroom options, one three-bedroom villa, and a majestic seven-bedroom beachfront Presidential Villa. Each of the rooms faces the sea and the sunset as the property tiers into the hillside.

Facilities include two restaurants and a beach bar, a beach club, a kids’ club, a fitness center, meeting rooms, and – in keeping with Banyan Tree’s wellness branding – a rainforest-themed spa.

Unique highlights include Banyan Tree’s signature Thai restaurant, Saffron, perched high above the bay, alongside a wedding deck, both of which are accessible by electric funicular.

Banyan Tree Launches Wellbeing Sanctuary in Koh Samui & Krabi

1080 719 wttc2

Banyan Tree Launches Wellbeing Sanctuary in Koh Samui and Krabi - TRAVELINDEXKoh Samui, Thailand, October 6, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / The Banyan Tree Group has rolled out a new healthy living concept at its properties around the world, including Banyan Tree Samui and Banyan Tree Krabi in southern Thailand, which have set aside a selection of pool villas and suites dedicated to holistic and wellbeing pursuits.

The “Wellbeing Sanctuary” initiative was launched on October 1st at both resorts, and provides guests with an opportunity to combine a leisure vacation with a daily program designed to enrich mind, body and soul — from meditation to Thai boxing, from massage and hydrotherapy to nature trails and sailing lessons —  complemented with a nutritious diet and personal consultations.

“When guests book a Wellbeing Sanctuary, they have the flexibility to choose their own activities,” said Remko Kroesen, Area General Manager overseeing both hotels. “Before arrival, we send them a questionnaire so they can stipulate their goals, and our practitioners will be on hand throughout their stay to ensure they have every opportunity to connect with nature, discover a sense of deep relaxation, and find balance.

“And when they leave, we will consult and provide suggestions that will help fine-tune and inspire their daily routines, and assist them on their journey.”

Teams at Banyan Tree Samui and Banyan Tree Krabi, which are both located on tranquil picture-perfect beaches, have tailored holistic itineraries based on Banyan Tree’s “8 Pillars” principle (Dietary Awareness; Physical Vitality; Cultivate the Mind; Sleep & Rest; Harmony with Nature; Learning & Development; Bonding & Connection; and Sustained Practices).

Each of the villas selected for the Wellbeing Sanctuary has been adapted with various wellbeing amenities — a mini-bar stocked with fresh juices and herbal teas instead of alcoholic drinks, a yoga mat, stretch bands, and even a Tibetan singing bowl — and hosts an outdoor pool and hot jet pool.

On Koh Samui, Wellbeing villas come with a luxurious infinity pool, while at Krabi, each room opens onto a private garden, ideal for private self-wellbeing activities.

Krabi is among the newest destinations in Banyan Tree’s quiver. The 72-key resort, which opened in October last year, is tiered into a hillside at serene Tubkaek Beach, a 40-minute drive from Krabi International Airport. It is surrounded on three sides by nature: a forested national park to the rear and far side, while overlooking one of Thailand’s most iconic natural wonders: the famous towering limestone cliffs that jut out of the sea in Than Bok Khorani National Marine Park.

Facilities at the hotel include two restaurants, a beach bar, a kids’ club, a fitness center, a meeting center, an elevated outdoor wedding deck, and — in keeping with Banyan Tree’s eco-friendly branding — a rainforest-themed spa.

Similarly, Banyan Tree Samui is nestled into a lush tropical hillside with spectacular views over a sapphire sea. The 38-acre property is rich in flora and plant life, and its private white-sand cove is flanked by coral reefs, which the resort’s Sustainability Team protects and regenerates.

Banyan Tree began rolling out its Wellbeing Sanctuary programs in March 2021, beginning in China, and is progressively launching at its resorts worldwide as each destination re-emerges from the pandemic.

Banyan Tree Marks Anniversary with Resort Credit Offers

799 533 wttc2

Banyan Tree Marks Anniversary with Resort Credit Offers - TRAVELINDEXKoh Samui, Thailand, September 29, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / One of Southeast Asia’s most beloved hotel groups, Banyan Tree, is celebrating its 27th anniversary with a range of value-driven offers across more than 40 properties worldwide.

In Thailand, the group’s luxury resorts in Koh Samui and Krabi provide daily credit vouchers to guests, which can be used at all on-site restaurants and spas to the tune of 2,000 baht (US$60) and 3,000 baht ($90) respectively.

Banyan Tree Samui will also include a complimentary round-trip airport transfer for guests.

The “Rediscover the World” promotion applies to bookings at all Banyan Tree hotels between 7 September and 15 October 2021; however, stays at the resorts can be taken any time until 7 September 2022 at Banyan Tree Samui, and until 31 July 2022 at Banyan Tree Krabi.

Founded by Singaporeans KP Ho and his wife Claire Chang, Banyan Tree’s foundations are deeply rooted in Thailand where they opened their first hotel back in 1994. However, the original site for their dream resort in Phuket was discovered to be sitting upon an abandoned tin mine and the soil was too toxic to support development. Unperturbed, the couple embarked on a program of regeneration, planting 7,000 trees and stimulating the growth of indigenous plants and flora.

Twenty-seven years later, the Banyan Tree brand has become synonymous with environmental awareness and wellbeing, winning numerous awards and adhering to the highest principles of sustainability.

Banyan Tree Krabi is the latest in the group’s lush tropical resorts to open in Thailand, launching in October 2020 despite the challenges of the covid pandemic. Situated at tranquil Tubkaek Beach, a 45-minute drive from Krabi International Airport, the new resort is flanked by nature — it tiers into a verdant forested landscape while facing Than Bok Khorani National Marine Park and its famous towering limestone cliffs, which jut from the Andaman Sea, one of Thailand’s most iconic and idyllic postcard images.

Banyan Tree Krabi has 72 suites and villas, each of which has its own private infinity pool and jet pool. Facilities at the hotel include two restaurants, a beach bar, a kids’ club, a fitness center, a meeting center, an elevated outdoor wedding deck, and in keeping with Banyan Tree’s global wellbeing branding — a rainforest-themed spa.

Perhaps one of Thailand’s most recognizable hotels for its picture-postcard location is Banyan Tree Samui, which opened in 2010. The resort is nestled into a tropical hillside overlooking a cove of white-sanded beach and sapphire sea, and each of the 88 villas on the lush 38-acre property boasts a private 35-sqm infinity pool.

Banyan Tree Samui was a Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Winner in 2020, and has consistently been voted one of the top resorts in Asia.

Both Banyan Tree Samui and Banyan Tree Krabi typify the brand by their atmosphere of “Thai-ness”. The signature Saffron Restaurant, available at either hotel, offers a menu of classic Thai cuisine and magnificent sea views, while the spas employ local Thai herbs in their massage products.

Banyan Tree’s design team has accentuated the ambience of luxury at each resort with Siamese architectural aspects such as pitched ceilings and Buddhist temple-shaped rooftops, as well as traditional Thai fabrics and artwork in the decor.

Thailand Mid-August Launch Planned for Krabi and Phang Nga

Thailand Mid-August Launch Planned for Krabi and Phang Nga

Krabi, Thailand, Augsut 7, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to reiterate that both the Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus programmes are going ahead as usual, and the plans to reopen Krabi and Phang Nga to fully vaccinated international tourists are set to start within August.

Mr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Spokesperson of the Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA), said the Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha had been keeping a close watch on the Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus programmes, and voiced confidence in the plans to revive the economy through tourism by gradually reopening destinations that could ensure the health and safety of both the tourists and local people.

The new COVID-19 cases in Phuket were cited as mostly detected among locals, construction camp workers and domestic travellers with only a small number of cases found among international arrivals.

From 1 July until 1 August, 2021, Phuket recorded 14,910 international arrivals under the Sandbox programme. Of these, 34 tested positive for COVID-19 and had been sent for medical treatment.

To contain local transmission, Phuket has stepped up screening measures on domestic travellers, effective from 3-16 August, 2021. The measures are only meant to prevent the spread of the disease from other Thai provinces, while international arrivals under the Sandbox programme can still enter Phuket per the existing rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, the recent report of 54 new cases on Ko Samui from a restaurant cluster has been brought under control, and that none of the infections were related to foreign tourists under the Samui Plus programme or those who continued their journey from the Phuket Sandbox programme.

From 15 July to 1 August, Surat Thani recorded 137 international arrivals under the Samui Plus programme, with 1 person testing positive for COVID-19. In addition, there were 211 tourists from the Phuket Sandbox programme.

Surat Thani also stepped up COVID-19 control measures, effective from the last week of July until further notice, to safeguard the ‘Samui Plus’ model.

Krabi and Phang Nga are scheduled to reopen selected areas within this month under a 7+7 model. This will allow foreign tourists under the Sandbox programme to reduce the mandatory stay in Phuket from 14 to 7 days, after which another 7 nights can be spent in Krabi (Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai, and Railay Beach), and Phang Nga (Khao Lak and Ko Yao).

The 7+7 model aims to provide international tourists with more options to visit multiple destinations during their trip to Thailand. Krabi and Phang Nga are ideal for this given their proximity to and ease of access from Phuket.

For Phang Nga, Khao Lak can be reached within 1.5 hours by car, while Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai can be reached within 30-40 minutes by boat from Bang Rong Pier.

For Krabi, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai and Railay Beach can be reached within 45-55 minutes from Rassada Pier.

Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga are declared among the 11 Controlled Areas or orange zone provinces in Thailand’s expansion of the COVID-19 restrictions from 3-31 August, 2021.

Banyan Tree Krabi Invites Guests to Take a Bath in the Forest

799 953 wttc2

Banyan Tree Krabi Invites Guests to Take a Bath in the Forest - TRAVELINDEXKrabi, Thailand, July 22, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX /  In this modern age of bustling cities, buzzing phones and busy schedules, the gentle art of “forest bathing” has suddenly become a popular recreational activity. And at Banyan Tree Krabi, the perfect environment is rooted just beyond the doorstep.

With a bountiful and beautiful variety of flora and fauna in nearby Khao Ngon Nak National Park, including a stunning panoramic viewpoint which offers vistas of the surrounding islands in the Andaman Sea, this is an idyllic spot for hiking, birdwatching, and wallowing in the tranquility and splendour of a tropical forest.

Shinrin-yoku is the Japanese translation for “forest bathing”; the original concept was simply to take in the fresh atmosphere of the forest via a leisurely walk. It developed in Japan in the 1980s and quickly became recognised as a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Recommended as a natural tonic for the mind, body and soul, forest bathing is not just a form of exercise, it is also an opportunity to connect with nature. Research shows that immersion in a sylvian environment enhances both physical and mental health, and stimulates the five senses. It aids in preventing cancers and other diseases, while allowing you the unparalleled joy of beholding the beauty of the forest.

“Every study I have read says that ‘forest bathers’ demonstrate reductions in stress, anger, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness,” said Banyan Tree Krabi’s Sustainability Manager Thepsuda Loyjiw. “In fact, after just 15 minutes of forest bathing blood pressure drops, stress levels are reduced, and concentration and mental clarity improve.

“And what better way to demonstrate Banyan Tree’s commitment to wellbeing and the environment by offering this activity to our guests,” she added. “The hiking trail begins directly behind our resort, and winds up towards some spectacular viewpoints and waterfalls.”

Banyan Tree Krabi is located on tranquil Tubkaek Beach, a 45-minute drive from Krabi International Airport. Facing a national marine park of uninhabited towering limestone islands jutting from the emerald sea, the resort backs onto Dragon Crest Hill, part of a chain of undulating green mountains known to local legend as the home of the “naga”, a mythical Hindu serpent. The naga was adopted as the hotel’s symbol and its wavy serpentine design is ubiquitous around the resort and inside the rooms.

Banyan Tree Krabi, which opened in October 2020, features 72 villas and suites, each with its own private pool. Facilities at the hotel include two restaurants, a beach bar, a kids’ club, a fitness centre, a meeting centre, an elevated outdoor wedding deck, and in keeping with Banyan Tree’s global wellbeing branding — a rainforest-themed spa.

“Leave your phone in the villa for one morning and come with us into the forest,” said Sustainability Manager Thepsusa.” It’s suitable for all age groups, and you’ll never regret spending time with Mother Nature.”

Also stay tuned for Banyan Tree’s rollout of Wellbeing Sanctuaries in 2021-22. As the world leans more into health and wellness following the impact of the pandemic, the Southeast Asia-based brand will be launching Wellbeing Sanctuaries that combine club floors or resort wings, dedicated dining and spa options into one exclusive journey. The first initiative was launched earlier this year in China, and will progressively roll out in Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Thailand and Vietnam in the months ahead.

Each resort will individually prepare programs for guests based on their “8 Pillars” principle (good sleep; good diet; interaction; intimacy; physical vitality; cultivating the mind; learning and development; harmony with nature; and sustained practices).
