Elephant Bar at Raffles Hotel Wins in Top 30 Bars Cambodia Awards - TRAVELINDEXPhnom Penh, Cambodia, May 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The iconic Elephant Bar at Raffles Hotel Le Royal won four honors at the “Top 30 Bars Cambodia” awards for 2023, earning recognition for its signature cocktails, impeccable service and distinctive special events.

The outlet was recognized as the “Top Bar of the Year” in the awards, which were announced on March 30. It was also named one of the “Top 30 Bars in Cambodia” and landed two honors for “Top Bar Team of the Year” in separate awards presented by Heineken and Chivas Regal.

“The Elephant Bar is a long-time institution in Phnom Penh,” General Manager Dennis de Groot said. “Over the past nine decades, we’ve welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Somerset Maugham and Jacqueline Kennedy, who sipped our first Femme Fatale, which is now a signature cocktail.”

The awards were announced as the bar introduces many unique special events this year.

The World Gin Tour, launched in January, showcases highlights from one of Southeast Asia’s most diverse and thoughtfully curated gin collections, with more than 150 labels. Each month introduces a new special cocktail menu featuring refreshing drinks made with a different country’s gin, in addition to a “gin masterclass” that includes cocktail flights for two hours highlighting the featured gin (priced at $28).

Additionally, Elephant Bar’s popular “bar takeover” series has welcomed top regional bartenders, such as Wong Wee Siong of the renowned Smoke & Mirrors rooftop cocktail bar in Singapore who mixed exclusive drinks for Elephant Bar patrons in April.

In March, Raffles Hotel Le Royal hosted the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, the worldwide organization dedicated to the noble art of Champagne sabrage. The group is globally renowned among Champagne aficionados for the ritual, which involves severing the top of the bottle with a sword.

Elephant Bar exudes timeless charm and sophistication with its rich wood accents, colorful ceiling frescoes and historic photographs on the walls, while wicker chairs and leather sofas bask behind high French windows and arched colonnades in true colonial style.

Voted the No. 1 hotel in Cambodia by readers of the US-based travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler in its annual Readers’ Choice Awards in October, Raffles Hotel Le Royal originally opened in 1929. The hotel features 175 rooms and suites that underwent a full refurbishment as part of a meticulous one-year restoration project in 2019.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal Wins Placement on Prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Awards

900 596 wttc2

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, October 18, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Raffles Hotel Le Royal, the iconic 90-year-old luxury hotel in the Cambodian capital, was named one of the Top 10 hotels in Southeast Asia by readers of the US-based travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

The 175-room landmark heritage property was also ranked the No. 1 hotel in Cambodia in the annual Readers’ Choice Awards, which, now in their 35th year, are the longest-running and most prestigious recognition of excellence in the travel industry.

“Our remarkable history, world-class service and timeless elegance are truly extraordinary, and this recognition—being voted the top hotel in Cambodia by some of the world’s most discerning travelers—offers further testament to that sentiment,” said Raffles Hotel Le Royal’s General Manager Dennis de Groot.

Designed in the 1920s by French architect Ernest Hébrard, the hotel is an imposing statement of Khmer, Art Deco and French Colonial styles and includes four suites dedicated to previous guests Jacqueline Kennedy, Charles de Gaulle, Andre Malraux and Somerset Maugham.

Hotel Le Royal originally opened its doors with just 55 rooms in 1929. It was taken over by Raffles in the 1990s at the invitation of Cambodia’s King Sihanouk, and relaunched as Raffles Hotel Le Royal in 1997 after a sensitive extension and refurbishment. To protect this treasure of Cambodian heritage, local artisans were commissioned to recreate painted ceilings, decorative beaten copper crests and outdoor sculptures.

Each of the rooms and suites at Raffles Hotel Le Royal underwent a full refurbishment as part of a meticulous one-year restoration project in 2019. Returning guests found lighter and brighter interiors, accentuated by spotlights, in addition to Segafredo coffee machines and Simmons pillow-top mattresses among the new features that add modern appeal. Traditionalists appreciate that the heart and soul of the vintage luxury hotel has been thoughtfully maintained, with polished hardwood floors, whirring ceiling fans, and old brass rotary telephones.

A witness to much of Cambodia’s modern history, Raffles Hotel Le Royal celebrated its 90th anniversary in November 2019.

Creating a Cocktail for Cambodia

960 710 wttc2

Creating a Cocktail for Cambodia - TRAVELINDEXPhnom Penh, Cambodia, March 17, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Following in Raffles’ grand tradition of concocting exotic new cocktails, Mr Kong Len, the bar captain at the iconic Elephant Bar in Raffles Hotel Le Royal, brings us the “Fifth Pillar”.

While infusing locally sourced orange skin and homemade orange bitters with Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin for 15 days, Kong roasted a blend of rock salt, kaffir lime leaves, and orange zest. All the ingredients were then shaken and strained into a chilled martini glass.

Kong said he was inspired to support Cambodia’s orange and lime farmers, and wanted to create a drink that offers the zesty twang of citrus with the refreshing botanicals of gin.

The Elephant Bar first opened in 1929; early guests at the bar included Charlie Chaplin and W. Somerset Maugham. And it was here in the 1960s that the Femme Fatale was created especially for the visit of former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Happy Hour at the Elephant Bar, Raffles Hotel Le Royal, is daily from 4 pm to 9 pm with 50% off selected drinks.

Patrons may be sated with the knowledge that a percentage of proceeds from sales of the Fifth Pillar is donated to a local NGO, Sunrise Cambodia, which supports children and struggling families in rural Cambodia.
