Basel, Switzerland, February 21, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Art Basel reveals 287 leading galleries and expanded city-wide program for its 2024 edition in Basel, the first led by the show’s new Director Maike Cruse

For its 2024 edition in Basel, Art Basel will bring together 287 leading international galleries to present artworks of the highest quality across all media – from painting and sculpture to photography and digital works – by artists ranging from early-twentieth-century Modern pioneers to emerging contemporary practitioners. Art Basel in Basel will once again reaffirm its unparallelled position as a platform for discovery and encounters that drive the art world.

The outstanding diversity of artistic perspectives on view at the fair will be complemented by lively events and activities spanning the entire city and its prominent cultural institutions, highlighting Basel’s unique appeal, and underscoring the significant impact of Art Basel on its hometown.

Maike Cruse, Director of Art Basel in Basel, said: ‘I am looking forward to welcoming the global art community to Basel come June for the upcoming edition of our show. Expanded City-Wide Programming
Art Basel’s public sector Parcours will be curated for the first time by Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute (SI) in New York, succeeding Samuel Leuenberger, who successfully managed and expanded the sector over the past eight years. Hessler aims to recontextualize Parcours as a curated exhibition that will meander through empty storefronts, a hotel, operational shops, and other urban spaces on Basel’s Clarastrasse, which connects the fairgrounds to the Rhine. Through ambitious projects, many of which will be site-specific and newly created, the sector will explore ideas of transformation and circulation within the realms of trade and globalization, the flow of information, and the varied climates and weathers spanning geographies and generations.

In addition, Art Basel will expand its presence within the city by activating the Hotel Merian
as a continuous, around-the-clock venue for artistic events and showcases. The Film sector, curated by writer and curator Filipa Ramos, will return with a compelling selection of moving image works, presented throughout the show week at Basel’s Stadtkino. Free to the public
and hosted on Art Basel’s fair ground, the renowned Conversations program will be for the first time curated by Berlin-based writer, editor, and educator Kimberly Bradley.

More details on the activation of Hotel Merian and the presentations of Art Basel’s special sectors such as Messeplatz, Unlimited, Parcours, Kabinett, Conversations, and Film will be released in the coming months.

Vietnam Golf Coast Clubs Plan for Another Milestone Year

900 506 wttc2

Vietnam Golf Coast Clubs Plan for Another Milestone Year - TRAVELNEWSHUB.comMajor events and new air routes to enhance Central Vietnam’s reputation as golf hub. Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) clubs are targeting another milestone year for Central Vietnam as a hub for golf in Asia following a record-breaking 2023.

“Momentum is with Central Vietnam as a golf destination at the moment and we are confident that energy will be maintained,” said Gary Dixon, general manager at Ba Na Hills Golf Club, one of the driving forces in the VGC destination marketing effort and home to a championship layout masterminded by 2023 European Ryder Cup team captain Luke Donald.

The region has emerged as a hub for golf travel in the region thanks to an array of layouts designed by luminaries including European legends Sir Nick Faldo (Laguna Golf Lang Co), Luke Donald (Ba Na Hills Golf Club), and Colin Montgomerie (Montgomerie Links), as well as other huge names like Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones Jr.

The area’s burgeoning reputation on the global stage was reflected during 2023, a year that saw the total number of rounds played on its courses reach an all-time high.

And with forthcoming blue-chip tournaments and events allied to a multifaceted range of draws from luxury resorts, legendary beaches and cultural highlights to world-class infrastructure that includes an ever-expanding list of air links into Danang International Airport, the VGC is planning for another massive year.

“Central Vietnam continues to be on an upward curve as a destination for golfers and it is easy to see why,” said Le Vo Hoang Van, club manager at Montgomerie Links where Colin Montgomerie has fashioned old-world design elements into a challenging layout. “Nowhere in Asia can golfers find such a concentration of world-class championship courses within easy reach of an international airport and each other. The area has earned a global reputation for great golf, luxurious resorts, and compelling culture and heritage, and that is only likely to be enhanced by developments in the region throughout 2024.”

Certainly, the calendar for the coming months is packed with significant events. In April, the Asia Grand Final of the Faldo Series, the culmination of the Asia leg of the world’s most celebrated circuits for junior golfers, will return to its home hub, the award-winning Sir Nick Faldo Signature Design at Laguna Golf Lang Co.

Other tournament highlights include the 2024 World Lefthanded Golf Championship, which will also take place in April.

Central Vietnam’s appeal is further enhanced by its world-class infrastructure which includes Danang International Airport, which links Danang with destinations within Vietnam and directly with cities such as Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore. New routes for 2024 include direct connections linking the region with India and Manila in The Philippines.

Banner events are also helping to elevate the destination. These include the Danang International Fireworks Festival—a two-month-long jamboree encompassing firework performances and cultural celebrations. Journey into Silence: The Serene Beauty of Nyepi, the Balinese New Year

871 528 wttc2
journey-into-silence-the-serene-beauty-of-nyepi-the-balinese-new-year.jpg

Bali, Indonesia, January 31, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Bali is renowned for its stunning landscapes and fascinating culture. The Balinese practice their unique form of Hinduism, with rituals of worship and cleansing structured by their lunar calendar, the Saka. Their ceremonies are often grand and magnificent, accompanied by lively celebrations. However, one stands out as perhaps the most beautiful of them all – Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, a day of silence and introspection.

Chaos Before the Quiet
The night before Nyepi is far from quiet. Streets are filled with the joyous and vibrant energy of the ogoh-ogoh parades. Villages and communities spend weeks preparing garish monsters made of cloth, tinsel, and papier-mâché, representing malevolent spirits, demons, or negative forces. These heavy statues are hoisted on bamboo rafts through the villages with shouts, chants, and the clanging of gongs until they meet their final fate in a massive cleansing bonfire. The next day, Bali undergoes a remarkable transformation as Nyepi, the day of silence, unfolds.

A Day Like No Other
The usually lively streets and beaches fall into an unusual stillness. No planes land in paradise, as the airport closes and planes stand idle on the runway, perhaps taking a pause to reflect on the year ahead alongside the rest of Bali. No fires are lit, no lights are turned on, and only a few hushed words are spoken. All that can be heard is birdsong and the wind rustling the palms.

Nyepi for the Visitor
The Balinese stay home, meditate, pray, and perform rituals. The sense of calm and introspection also permeates into the resorts, where tourists pause their travels to relax and reflect in silent camaraderie, engaging in a candlelit card game or two. Unfortunately, an ill-advised trend has emerged on social media, where tourists sneak out to take selfies on the empty streets, considered highly offensive to the Balinese.

Silent Night
As the day of silence comes to a close, Nyepi night is a final treat. With minimal light interference, the island’s skies become an astronomical canvas, displaying a breathtaking array of stars. This allows you to experience the Milky Way as it is seen only in the most remote of places.

Experiencing Nyepi
Nyepi is a rare and memorable experience for visitors. In the unspoiled North Bali, The Damai Resort offers guests a unique opportunity to experience this fascinating ritual in an immersive setting centered around sound and silence. The renowned sound healer and yogi, Akiko Kigarashi, will host sessions with her famous brass singing bowls – hauntingly beautiful vibrating bowls that emit moving soundscapes resonating within your body.
