New Data Shows Investment Returning to Global Tourism Sector

700 401 wttc2

New Data Shows Investment Returning to Global Tourism Sector - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, September 18, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Investment in the global tourism cluster has started to bounce back from the lows it touched during the pandemic off the back of the steady recovery of international tourist arrivals, according to a newly released report jointly produced by UNWTO and fDi Intelligence.

The report, which is based on data from fDi Markets, fDi Intelligence’s proprietary database of greenfield FDI projects, as well as international tourism data from UNWTO, provides a broad overview of the ongoing investment cycle in the tourism sector, breaking down investment figures by region, segments and companies. Key findings include:

  • Both FDI project numbers and job creation rates in the tourism cluster grew by 23% from 286 investments in 2021 to 352 in 2022. Job creation in tourism FDI also increased by 23% over the same period, to an estimated 36,400 in 2022.
  • The leading destination region for tourism FDI projects in 2022 was Western Europe with 143 announced investments at a combined estimated value of $2.2bn.
  • The number of announced projects into the Asia-Pacific region increased marginally by 2.4% to 42 projects in 2022.
  • The hotel and tourism sector accounted for almost two-thirds of all projects in the tourism cluster between 2018 and 2022. FDI projects increased by 25% from 2021 to 2022.

These investments will then pave the way for a skilled workforce that can deliver exceptional growth, drive innovation and, by embracing digital technologies, enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector

“Greenfield FDI into the tourism sector is showing signs of life after all but vanishing in the pandemic years. With Covid–19 behind us, the sector has no time to waste in addressing the biggest challenge of our times: climate change and the resulting sustainability imperative,” comments Jacopo Dettoni, the editor of fDi Intelligence.

“To ensure the growth and competitiveness of the sector, significant investments must be made in education and talent by upskilling the professional workforce and implementing vocational and technical programmes. Only in this way can we equip young people — of whom only 50% have completed secondary education — with the knowledge and capabilities they need to thrive in the sector. These investments will then pave the way for a skilled workforce that can deliver exceptional growth, drive innovation and, by embracing digital technologies, enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector,” argues Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General.

“As the sector steers its course towards recovery and growth, UNWTO now, more than ever, prioritises innovation, education and strategic investments as the pillars for recalibrating and adapting to these ever-evolving market dynamics. Spearheading a series of initiatives, we equip the professional workforce with new skills through upskilling and vocational workforce programmes, creating quality job opportunities, and raising average wages across the entire tourism value chain,” says Natalia Bayona, executive director of the UNWTO.

The North America and Asia-Pacific regions each contribute three companies to the top 10 investors list for tourism foreign direct investment (FDI) between 2018 and 2022. The rest of the top 10 comprises companies from Europe, with Spain-based Melia, UK-based Intercontinental Hotels Group, France-based Accor and UK-based Selina all featuring.

Booking.com and TAT Launch Explore Thai Taste to Boost Gastronomic Tourism - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25RESTAURANTS.comBangkok, Thailand, September 14, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Booking .com collaborates with Thailand’s Tourism Authority to unveil the “Thai Foodie Map,” spotlighting local eateries in lesser-known destinations, amplifying Thailand’s culinary heritage. Booking .com is joining forces with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to launch the exciting ‘Explore Thai Taste’ campaign as gastronomic tourism continues to rise as a travel trend that transcends borders, attracting both foreign and local travelers seeking authentic culinary experiences. This collaborative effort aims to launch the “Thai Foodie Map”— a one-of-a-kind local guidebook that will highlight local eateries and food shops in secondary or alternative destinations across the country. This campaign not only celebrates Thailand’s rich culinary heritage, but it also uses the soft power of food to promote the country’s tourism to both domestic and international visitors.

Based on Booking .com research 75% of global travelers and 86% of Thai travelers seek authentic experiences that are representative of the local culture, with food being one of the top deciding factors for both Thai (89%) and global (77%) travelers. Thailand has a strong reputation for delicious cuisine, making it an ideal destination for food enthusiasts. Thai cuisine’s global popularity remains strong due to its diverse menu, which includes everything from the sweet and spicy flavors of Pad Thai to the aromatic green curries that tingle the taste buds. The #ExploreThaiTaste campaign capitalizes on this trend by encouraging visitors to visit lesser-known destinations outside of the country’s major cities.

Mr. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, Tourism Authority of Thailand, said, “The Explore Thai Taste campaign is an open invitation to discover the soul of our nation through its flavors. Each bite is a journey through our rich heritage, and each dish carries the essence of our culture. We believe that by showcasing our diverse culinary landscape, we can help to promote Thai destinations, particularly in these secondary provinces. By sharing these hidden culinary gems, we’re not only creating a flavor-filled journey but also playing a vital role in highlighting the unique charm of Thailand’s diverse provinces. It’s a delicious way to celebrate our nation’s cultural delights.”

The heart of this campaign is the “Thai Foodie Map” – a comprehensive guide showcasing 40 hand-picked local restaurants from eight provinces, representing the diverse culinary offerings of Central, North, South, and Northeastern Thailand, that invites everyone to explore the authentic flavors of Thailand while encouraging domestic travel.

Chatsuda Lertpiriyakamol, Area Manager Partner Services Thailand and Indochina at Booking .com, said, “The #ExploreThaiTaste initiative aligns with Booking .com’s mission of making it easier for everyone to experience the world, and we believe that the Thai Foodie Map creation and introduction will serve as a delicious guideline for everyone to embark on a journey of unique taste and local culture, while celebrating the different flavors of each destination. We are thrilled to be working with the TAT on this campaign, who is our enthusiastic guides on this culinary adventure across Thailand. Through this collaboration, we aim to create an unforgettable and mindful gastronomic journey that encourages domestic travel while also supporting local communities across the country and enabling them to thrive.”

To bring these culinary journeys to life, Booking .com and TAT are collaborating with local food and travel bloggers eager to explore new destinations and share their culinary adventures in each region. They’re also partnering with ‘Travel Sustainable Properties’ on Booking .com in each recommended destination, offering eco-friendly accommodations that support local communities.

The Thai Foodie Map not only highlights regional delicacies, but also signature dishes from every corner of Thailand. The Thai Foodie Map promises a mouth-watering journey through Thailand’s culinary diversity, from the herbal curries of the South to the fiery Som Tam of the Northeast; as well as the savory delights of Central Thailand to the unique flavors of the North. To further assist travelers, detailed itineraries, recommended Travel Sustainable properties, and community-benefiting experiences will be published, ensuring that every adventure adheres to responsible tourism principles.

By celebrating local restaurants and engaging travelers, the Explore Thai Taste campaign under collaboration between Booking .com and TAT, showcases Thailand’s incredible culinary diversity while enriching travel experiences for both local and international tourists.

Conrad Macao Introduces Lapidem Rituals and Crystal Sound Therapy

700 390 wttc2

Conrad Macao Introduces Lapidem Rituals and Crystal Sound Therapy - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25SPAS.comMacao, Macao SAR, September 7, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Conrad Macao’s Bodhi Spa has introduced two gratifying wellness experiences, both of which provide noticeable benefits, Lapidem Rituals and Crystal Sound Therapy Meditation classes.

The only spa in Macao to offer Lapidem Rituals, these indulgent treatments at Bodhi Spa combine intensive pampering with Lapidem’s critically-acclaimed products from Japan. The other addition, Crystal Sound Therapy Meditation, also known as singing bowl therapy, brings inner stillness and a deep sense of peace.

Both are founded in venerable traditions and wisdom, and adapted for a contemporary and complete sensory experience that will leave guests feeling nourished.

Four Exclusive Lapidem Rituals

Lapidem is noted for its philosophy that only when the body, mind and soul are balanced is beauty created. This holistic outlook is showcased in Lapidem’s best-selling products, which include skin, body and hair care ranges. Combining Lapidem’s results-driven range and ancient Japanese beliefs towards health and wellness, with the expertise of Bodhi Spa therapists, has resulted in the creation of four specially designed signature rituals, each lasting 2.5 hours.

Choices include:

• The deeply relaxing Healing Ritual, which uses constant and fluctuating massage techniques, relieving fatigue, stress and chronic pain, while improving sleep quality. Included in this treatment is Lapidem’s Calm bath & massage oil and a moisturising mist.

• The exquisite detoxifying Purification Ritual eases fatigue, reduces swelling, rejuvenates, and rebalances hydration. Lapidem’s Charge bath & massage oil and five elements Repair Jelly Cream are some of the products included in this ritual.

• Based on Chinese medicine the Energetic Alignment Ritual revitalises, restores healing, balances mind and body, regulates hormonal balance and improves immunity. A concentrated Lapidem Serum Lotion and the Vital Mask are just some of the range included.

• Designed specifically for the busy and active man, the Gentleman’s Escape Ritual enhances sleep quality, boosts energy levels, counters eye strain, and alleviates fatigue, stiff neck and shoulders. Lapidem’s five elements bath & massage oils and a moisturising mist are used.

All rituals take place in private spa suites and begin with an aromatic bath and steam, plus a choice of Lapidem oils that are based on the Chinese philosophy of the five elements, and end with a reviving head massage and wakeup ritual.

To maintain and continue the results beyond the spa, a range of innovative Lapidem products, which are highly functional, predominately all natural (95-100%) and made in Japan, are also available for sale at Bodhi Spa. This includes the moisturising five elements Repair Jelly Cream, the revitalising Vital Mask, and the full range of five elements bath & massage oils.

Crystal Sound Therapeutic Classes

Crystal sound therapy has been practiced for thousands of years. It is known to lower stress levels and bring inner calm that stimulates the body and mind to enter a natural meditative state. Taking place in the Wellness Lounge, the Crystal Sound Therapy Meditation classes will be led by Thai practitioner and crystal sound therapy expert, Nong Sompong.

Also known for therapeutic properties, the sounds and vibrational frequencies emanating from the crystal quartz bowls are designed to unblock the chakras (energy centres) and promote a healthy flow of energy, thereby promoting overall physical and emotional health. The classes are twofold. The first part of the class is a calming guided meditation combined with the bowls, while the second part is the resonating tones of the crystal bowls only. The overall experience is that of being transported to a profound level of relaxation.

Classes are available at 6:00pm every Wednesday and at 10:00am every Saturday, with the option of a small group class (MOP250* per person), a two-person class (MOP500*per person) or a private class (MOP800*).

Tracy Lord, director of Spa Operations, Bodhi Spa said, “We are elated to be introducing both of these wellbeing offerings to guests. We all need to escape daily pressures, and to take care of our body physically and our mind emotionally, and these new additions to Bodhi Spa’s comprehensive menu do just that. The Lapidem Rituals are designed holistically to achieve profound results. The crystal sound classes, like the rituals, take a comprehensive approach and are a perfect tool for reducing stress, pressure and worry, while motivating people to slow down.”

Yue, which means “happiness” in Chinese, pays homage to this legacy by bringing authentic Chinese dining to the heart of Phuket’s old town.

Culinary Delights Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Yue Restaurant & Bar promises an authentic culinary journey through Cantonese cuisine. Our talented chefs specialize in creating handcrafted dim sum and serving premium teas, ensuring an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

Led by Head Chef Kenny Chang, who has helmed the Chinese Kitchen for over 10 years, we proudly present signature items such as Yue Andaman Sea King, Yue Sichuan Lobster, Yue Roasted Duck, and Golden Peach Gum Longan Jelly.

Dragon-Inspired Design The dragon, a symbol of fortune in Chinese folklore, takes center stage in Yue’s design. Inspired by the dynamic dragon dance seen at Phuket’s festivals, the restaurant’s interiors feature captivating elements, including striking round seating that winds through the restaurant and an artistically designed ceiling. The decoration also pays homage to Phuket’s industrial heritage, incorporating elements made from rock and tin.

Elegant Dining Options Choose from a variety of seating arrangements, from intimate tables to social booth-style settings, all harmonizing with Yue’s ambiance and aesthetics. For special occasions, three private dining rooms offer an exclusive experience, reflecting the island’s unique history and contemporary Cantonese sophistication.

Phuket's Farm-To-Table Movement Takes Centre Stage at PHIST 2023 - TOP25RESTAURANTS.comPhuket, Thailand, August 30, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Phuket’s leading chefs to shine a light on the flourishing sustainable gastronomy movement, with live cooking demonstrations on 4th September and important CSR projects to support local communities. The flourishing farm-to-fork movement will take centre stage at PHIST 2023 (Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism), as a group of leading chefs demonstrate how Michelin ratings can raise the bar for sustainability and social responsibility in Thailand.

PHIST 2023, Southeast Asia’s biggest sustainability event for the travel and hospitality sectors, returns to Phuket on 4th September with an energizing full-day itinerary of interactive debates, discussions and exhibitions, headlined by some of the industry’s biggest names such as Banyan Tree founder KP Ho and design icon Bill Bensley.

Now, it has been revealed that attendees at SAii Laguna Phuket will also be treated to a showcase of world-class farm-to-fork gastronomy by three of the region’s most highly-acclaimed culinary figures: Rick Dingen, Executive Chef at Jampa Restaurant, who has earned a prestigious Michelin Green accolade for his commitment to zero-waste cuisine; Xavier Charest-Rehel, Executive Chef at Banyan Tree Phuket, who manages the Veya Pharm organic garden which focuses on clean farming methods; and Tipaporn Phianthong, Head Chef of Banyan Tree Phuket’s Saffron Restaurant.

At PHIST 2023, these celebrated chefs will stage a series of exciting live cooking demonstrations. Guests will be able to get up-close to the action, learn why sustainable, farm-to-fork and zero-waste dining is so important, and of course, sample the chefs’ mouth-watering culinary creations.

Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks and co-organiser of PHIST 2023, said: “We are excited to feature these three world-class farm-to-fork chefs at PHIST. Travel to resort islands in Asia has moved beyond the beach; for many guests, trying amazing artisan food gives them a true sense of place. Adopting sustainable practices isn’t just great for the planet, it can help restaurants create authentic dining experiences, support local suppliers, and attract travelling foodies.”

Organic cuisine is at the heart of Banyan Tree Group’s culinary ethos. Xavier Charest-Rehel, Executive Chef at Banyan Tree Phuket, has established the Veya Pharm, which focuses on highly nutritious ingredients such as mushrooms, passionfruit, tomatoes, mulberries, chilies and a wide variety of herbs and spices, all of which are used in the resort’s restaurants and staff canteen.

Chef Xavier commented: “At Banyan Tree Group, we have been committed to the process of using seasonal, regional produce in our kitchens for years, and we are dedicated to finding sustainable alternatives that positively impact the environment and local communities. I am looking forward to showcasing our farm-to-table strategy at PHIST 2023.”

Phuket Hotels Association, the co-organiser of PHIST 2023, actively promotes farm-to-fork dining and zero waste. Under its “Green Planet School” project, the association also helps Phuket’s schools to manage small organic gardens, allowing children to learn about growing their own food and protecting the environment. This initiative has already been rolled out to four schools, each of which has been assigned to one of the association’s member hotels.
