BACK ON TRACK: Air Canada to resume full transatlantic sked in 2024

1080 787 wttc2

A new, year-round route between Montreal and Madrid will launch next May as part of Air Canada’s expanded international summer 2024 flying schedule. The airline plans to operate 100 percent of its peak summer 2019 trans-Atlantic capacity next year, taking full advantage of the robust recovery in its largest international market.

Highlights of the new schedule include:

• New year-round route between Montreal and Madrid
• Expanded service to Italy, includes three daily flights to Rome
• Earlier seasonal start-ups from Montreal to Amsterdam and Copenhagen, and from Toronto to Brussels and Edinburgh

“Air Canada saw a tremendous rebound in international flying this past summer, particularly on the trans-Atlantic, and we expect Europe will remain popular next year. In anticipation of this, we are expanding our flying schedule to offer customers more choice and flexibility as they begin to plan their 2024 holidays,” said airline executive VP Mark Galardo.

He added, “The centrepiece of today’s announcement is our new Montreal-Madrid flight. This will be the only year-round service between Montreal and the Spanish capital, complementing our long-standing Toronto-Madrid flights, and offering compelling options for leisure customers and also returning business travellers.”

Air Canada’s Montreal-Madrid service will be operated five days a week on 255-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

Overall, Air Canada will operate 51 routes to 30 cities in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India across the Atlantic in summer 2024.

Air Canada’s Toronto and Montreal hubs will respectively rank third and fifth largest in North America, in terms of average daily trans-Atlantic seats; the airline says it is committed to further developing both hubs’ trans-Atlantic footprint in the coming years.

Transatlantic, Italy

In response to projected strength in leisure demand, Air Canada will also expand frequencies to popular Mediterranean destinations and bring forward the start-up of several seasonal European services next summer.

“We are excited to announce a significant expansion of our service offering to Italy, with a combined three daily flights from Toronto and Montreal to Rome, as well as daily services to Milan and Venice. This underpins the importance of Italy in Air Canada’s global network, as we are the largest carrier between Canada and Italy, and the only one connecting the two countries on a year-round basis,” said Galardo.

Key increases in Air Canada’s trans-Atlantic services for summer 2024 include:

ANTIGUA HAS MOMENT IN THE SUN

600 275 wttc2

The tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda is flying high. Literally. On Aug. 10, two citizens of the island ventured into space on the Virgin Galactic 02 Spacecraft, making Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers worldwide celebrities, but also blasting their country into the international spotlight.

At 18 years of age, Ana was the youngest person (by two weeks) ever to go to space. Keisha and Ana were also the first mother and daughter and the first people from the Caribbean to make the journey into the cosmos, and only the 6th and 7th Black women to travel to space.

And while the entire nation of Antigua and Barbuda erupted in a jubilant display of national pride, the Virgin Galactic Global Livestream of the spaceflight was also broadcast on massive screens at a public Watch Party in Antigua, with images of the local festivities in turn beamed out to the global audience.

During an interview with Travel Industry Today, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) CEO Colin C. James, positively beamed at the “big event” that included the Antigua passengers (who had won tickets to take part).

“We went up with our flag and our pink sand and we really, really, ensured that we were picked up globally – which we were: over 400 news agencies picked up the story,” he said. “So, that’s really trending right now. Our flags sold out on Amazon and we really capitalized on the opportunity to raise Antigua-Barbuda’s profile – not just with the travel trade, but with media around the globe.”

Indeed, James joked that he’s considering targeting “the Martian market” as soon as he has money to spend.

“If the price is right, come on down,” he laughed.

Canada

Closer to home, James says flight service is back to post pandemic levels with a flight every day from Canada, including five rotations from Air Canada, two from WestJet, and one from Sunwing.

And with flights from Toronto and Montreal typically clocking in at about 4-1/2 hours, he says, “We can have you on the beach by afternoon.”

Antigua and Barbuda

Carnival

Antigua and Barbuda is located in the heart of the Caribbean Sea and boasts ideal year-round temperatures. The twin-island destination offers visitors two uniquely distinct experiences grounded in a rich history, vibrant culture, varied excursions, award-winning resorts, unique cuisine, and 365 stunning pink and white-sand beaches – one for every day of the year.

The largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands, Antigua comprises 280 sq. km. of spectacular topography with a variety of sightseeing opportunities, including Nelson’s Dockyard, the only remaining example of a Georgian fort and a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.

Jones noted that romance and weddings are a key focus of Antigua-Barbuda’s marketing strategy, with about 1,200 destination weddings taking place each year on the islands.

Other tourism pillars include sailing, wellness/hiking, and heritage & culture.

Reflecting those themes, Antigua’s tourism events calendar includes Antigua and Barbuda Wellness Month (June), Run in Paradise (May), Antigua Sailing Week (April-May), Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta (April), Romance Month (June), and the annual Antigua Carnival (July-Aug.).

Meanwhile, Barbuda, Antigua’s smaller sister island, is the ultimate celebrity hideaway. The island lies 43 km north-east of Antigua and is just a 15-minute plane ride away. Barbuda is known for its untouched 18 km stretch of pink sand beach and as the home of the largest Frigate Bird Sanctuary in the Western Hemisphere.

ROUND-UP: Aug. 28-Sept. 1, 2023

600 275 wttc2

Among last week’s news highlights, ACTA launched a loan relief campaign, tropical storm Idalia ravaged Florida and Georgia, China finally dropped COVID testing for arrivals, Air Canada slashed routes from Calgary, and Transat completed a deal to sell land it owned in Mexico.

NEWS

ACTA has launched a letter writing campaign calling on the federal government to provide more time for federal loans to travel agents/agencies to be repaid. The association is urging agents to send a letter to their Member of Parliament and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland by Sept. 29. A recent survey by ACTA on Debt and Government Pandemic Loans conducted in July reveals that 27% of travel businesses owe at least $100,000, 56% owe at least $50,000 and 80% owe at least $10,000 – and that a majority of travel agencies and independent travel advisors are not confident they can repay principal and interest on CEBA, RRRF and HASCAP loans by Dec. 31.

Tropical Storm Idalia left a trail of flooding and destruction across the US Southeast, stretching back to its landfall as a hurricane in Florida. Still, it was far less destructive than feared, providing only glancing blows to Tampa Bay and other more populated areas as it came ashore with 201 kph winds in rural Florida.

China no longer requires a negative COVID-19 test result for incoming travellers, representing a milestone in its reopening to the rest of the world after a three-year isolation that began with the country’s borders closing in March 2020. The new measure (or lack thereof) came into effect Aug. 30.

BY THE NUMBERS

According to WTTC’s Travel & Tourism Economic Impact 2023 Global Trends Report the GDP contribution of the US Travel & Tourism sector grew by 16.9% in 2022 to reach $2 trillion. Additionally, the sector also created 2.7 million more jobs compared to 2021. The impressive growth was fuelled by a strong resurgence in demand from international visitors – including Canadians – whose spending increased by more than 150% year-on-year, to reach $115.7 billion in 2022.

AIR

Beginning Oct. 30, WestJet will double its daily service Calgary and Ottawa, adding seven additional weekly flights during peak travel periods. In addition, five weekly flights have been added between Calgary and Los Angeles. Flights can be  booked as of Sept. 5.

Air Canada is eliminating six major routes out of Calgary this winter, in part due to an industry-wide pilot shortage. The airline confirmed that it will no longer offer non-stop flights from Calgary to Ottawa, Halifax, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Cancun, or Frankfurt as of the end of October.

Canada Jetlines has released an expanded winter flight schedule featuring service between Toronto and Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Orlando – in addition to increased frequencies to Cancun and Las Vegas. Flights to Orlando start Oct. 30 and to Mo’ Bay on Nov. 5.

Porter Airlines is launching a mobile app that includes the ability to check-in, access booking details, select seats, add bags, manage flight changes, access boarding passes, and receive real-time flight notifications.

DEALS

Canadian outdoor enthusiasts will receive 20% off their stay at AutoCamp California properties in Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Russian River for the rest of the year if they use the code VISITCALIFORNIA while booking. The three glamping/airstream sites offer a unique way to visit the state and offer such amenities as heated pool, yoga, sea kayaking, wellness classes and more. AutoCamp is also launching a new location in Sequoia National Park in mid-2024.

Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) has launched the Barbados ‘World of Difference’ Experiences Campaign, where each approved traveller will receive BBD$200 (CDN$135) in a digital wallet format, to be spent exclusively within Barbados. John Zeckendorf, Owner & Principal of Mandala Hospitality Groups says, “We’re delighted to be collaborating with BWH on this opportunity to bring to life the Aiden brand in a new market. It makes for a great opportunity to expand our portfolio in WA and showcase our hotel management solutions. We look forward to this exciting prospect.”

Since the opening of Aiden Darling Harbour in February 2022, the Aiden brand has grown rapidly throughout the world and received international acclaim for its 14 properties located in the US, Germany, Austria, South Korea, France and Italy with 30 Aiden properties recently opened in Scandinavia. Perth, Western Australia will be the latest new addition to the portfolio, continuing its impressive growth trajectory with additional properties scheduled to open in other parts of the world.

Located on the old site of City Motors, the hotel design will pay homage to the rich automotive and cultural histories of the site, with artwork and recycled building components strategically integrated throughout the development. In true Aiden style, guest rooms, reception and foyer will be thoughtfully designed featuring vibrant works of art including sculptures, murals and paintings designed to hero the locale’s rich history.

The Aiden brand reinvigorates the city hotel experience offering affordable luxury, combined with soulful and sophisticated boutique charm. It is designed to break the mould of the stereotypical lifestyle hotel creating a gateway location to the CBD, walking distance from Northbridge, CBD and Leederville and located within Perth’s celebrated Pickle District.

Construction on the interconnected urban village will commence in mid-2024 and completion is estimated mid-2026.

easyJet holidays Partners with BeCause to Expand Hotel Sustainability Data Capabilities - TRAVELINDEXThe sustainability startup will help easyJet holidays automate and simplify the way it presents sustainability-certified hotels to travelers at booking

Copenhagen, Denmark, August 23, 2023 – BeCause, a startup enterprise software company that is transforming how companies in the hospitality, travel, and tourism industries manage their sustainability data, has announced a new partnership with easyJet holidays to help the tour operator more efficiently collect and communicate hotel sustainability data.

BeCause will collect data on hotels certified according to 33 recognized Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards and integrate that data into the easyJet holidays system. That sustainability data will help inform the tour operator’s “eco-certified” hotel collection.

Efficient and scalable sustainability data management
BeCause’s sustainability data management solution replaces easyJet holidays’ current manual update processes. Under the new partnership, hotel sustainability data will be automatically updated in the easyJet holidays database, ensuring that users and travelers always have up-to-date sustainability information about eco-certified accommodation options.

“Through our shared involvement with GSTC, we quickly recognized both easyJet holidays’ need for a scalable sustainability data solution and their genuine commitment to industry transformation,” said Frederik Rubens Steensgaard, CEO and co-founder of BeCause. “We look forward to a long and productive relationship and helping to make real headway on reducing travel’s impact on the environment.”

Supporting easyJet holidays’ eco-friendly goals
Part of the easyJet group, easyJet holidays is the UK’s fastest-growing tour operator, projected to grow by 60% year-on-year this summer. The company, who were the winners of The Globes’ Sustainable Future Award, is committed to making sustainable holidays mainstream and, in addition to the GSTC, partners with the University of Oxford and the UNWTO to help drive forward the development of sustainable travel.

“We’re committed to our holidays being a force for good and making a positive impact on the environment and local communities in the destinations our customers visit,” said Matt Callaghan, Director of Customer & Operations for easyJet holidays. “We know that holidaymakers are caring more than ever about the eco credentials of the hotels they’re choosing to stay at. So, we needed a partner to help us connect and communicate hotel sustainability data more efficiently and scale with us as we grow, and BeCause delivered on those criteria.”

BeCause’s technology framework connects certification entities like GSTC and Green Key with travel providers and distributors, enabling over 11,000 hotels, tour operators and OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) to provide travelers with accurate and reliable sustainability data. These processes, traditionally handled via spreadsheets, emails and unconnected niche systems, are ripe for transformation, and managing them more efficiently allows travel and tourism companies like easyJet to accelerate their sustainability efforts across their consumer-facing platforms.
