A new look passport is coming for Canadians, plus the ability to renew online. Also last week, Emirates announced a new country manager in Canada and interline agreement with Etihad; Qantas added new meaning to the term ‘long haul’; travel agent month incentives continue; and German rail workers cancelled a planned strike.

NEWS

Canadians will be able to apply to renew their passports online beginning this fall. The new document will include updated security features and colourful new pages. Those applying for new passports, including children, will still need to go through the traditional application process. The majority of applications the government receives are for new passports, but an expected surge in passport renewals is expected over the next year as the first 10-year passports issued in 2013 are set to expire.

A labour union representing more than 200,000 railway workers in Germany cancelled plans for a two-day strike after employers met one of its key demands. The strike had been scheduled to start Sunday and run until late Tuesday affecting regional and long-distance travel.

Bermuda has rejoined the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). “As our tourism sector continues to recover following the difficult COVID years, it is important that we have access to and work with similar jurisdictions to share ideas that have been successful and can benefit Bermuda. Our membership in the CTO will be of great value as we continue to build a successful, sustainable tourism industry that helps grow our economy and provide exciting and empowering careers for Bermudians,” stated Tourism Minister Vance Campbell.

New service from Porter Airlines between Ottawa International Airport (YOW) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will begin July 26, with one daily roundtrip flight operated with the state-of-the-art 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Air Transat has announced details of its 2023-24 winter flight program, slated to begin on Nov. 1. At the peak of the season, the carrier’s steadily growing program will include increased capacity over 300 direct flights per week to Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America and Europe, departing from eight Canadian cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, and Halifax.

Cathay Pacific is marking a milestone this month: 40 years of flying to the Americas. The launch of non-stop service between Hong Kong and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on May 1, 1983, represented the airline’s first entry into North America, and also becoming the first airline in the world to connect the two cities with a nonstop service.

Bell is teaming up with Air Canada to offer free messaging for all Aeroplan members worldwide on Wi-Fi-equipped airplanes. The telecommunications giant will sponsor inflight Wi-Fi services across the airline’s fleet, including Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express planes, starting May 15. The service will also be available to partner airline loyalty members, including customers of United MileagePlus, Lufthansa Group Miles & More and Emirates Skywards, when their account numbers are associated with an Air Canada booking.

Qantas will launch the world’s longest commercial nonstop flight. It will take QF1 21 hours to cover the 10,978 miles from Sydney to London. It will leave Sydney in the evening and arrive in London the next morning. QF2, from London to Sydney, will leave before lunch and arrive in the late afternoon on the following day after 20 hours. The flights are expected to launch in 2025.

DESTINATIONS

The County of Maui has temporarily closed a portion of Hāna Highway from Alelele Bridge to Lelekea Bridge near Kīpahulu in East Maui due to rockfall that is impacting the road. This closure, which may last up to a month, is necessary for county crews to stabilize the cliffside conditions, including the removal of loose rocks, say authorities. Visitors are advised to avoid traveling to the affected area to lessen the impact on residents.

KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON: Details of nude bike race kept under wraps

The next Philly Naked Bike Ride is coming in August, but organizers of the annual jaunt in the City of Brotherly Love to promote fuel conservation and positive body image said they are holding the Aug. 26 starting location and route under wraps and will disclose them the day before.

Previous rides have zipped past sites including Independence Hall, the US Mint, the Liberty Bell, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Sylvester Stallone sprinted up the steps in “Rocky.” The 2020 ride was called off because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 16-km. Philadelphia ride, related to the World Naked Bike Ride movement, draws about 3,000 bikers in the buff. Organizers say they hope it encourages people to bike more and to embrace nudity as a normal and enjoyable part of life.

The ride used to be held in September, but the nude bicyclists said it was too chilly, with temperatures reaching only as high as about 21 degrees Celsius), so in 2019 it was moved to August.

LISTENING IN: Memories of Giraffes in Amsterdam

Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “The Girl from Ipanema” (“Garota de Ipanema”) was recorded by Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz, and released in 1964 as part of the album Getz/Gilberto. The album won the 1965 Grammy Awards for Best Album of the Year, Best Jazz Instrumental Album – Individual or Group and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and a single of the song reached number one on the Pop Standard chart and was named Record of the Year. And what the hell does that have to do with giraffes in Amsterdam?

Several years ago, Vicki Borenstein and I spent a weekend in Amsterdam (on the way to World Travel Market in London) and decided to enjoy the Sunday Jazz Brunch at our hotel. The Girl from Ipanema was playing as we went in – and we discovered it was a favourite of us both. The band must have loved it too – or they picked up on our enthusiasm – because they played it several more times during our brunch.

We were seated beside a large picture window facing the street when I casually looked out to see (to my surprise) two giraffes walking slowly by. I know it was Amsterdam, but truly we had been fuelled by nothing stronger than half a glass of champagne. I gestured wildly at Vicki to look out and she saw them too along with a couple of very tall men (it finally registered that they were on stilts) and people in costumes and finery on horseback. We watched open mouthed and it finally clicked – it was the annual Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) Welcome Parade. Meanwhile the Jazz band yet again played ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ and we drank a couple more glasses of champagne.

The whimsy of that morning seemed to continue through that trip as Jobim’s haunting tune played at several venues we were at, both in Amsterdam and in London.

It was a lovely experience a great trip and we always remember it when we play the Getz/Gilberto album – as we just did.

There was not a good video of Getz, Astrud and João Gilberto, so I’ve used a recording with still images.

UNWTO New Assessment of Pandemic-Related Travel Restrictions - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, May 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / UNWTO has welcomed the end of the public health emergency phase for COVID-19 with a summary analysis of the travel restrictions introduced in response to the pandemic.

The decision by the World Health Organization (WHO) to determine that COVID-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern represents a major milestone in the global effort to combat the virus. In this context, UNWTO has released its analysis of both the introduction and lifting of travel restrictions during all stages of the pandemic´s emergency phase. “The end of COVID-19 travel restrictions: Summary of findings from the COVID-19 related travel restrictions reports”highlights key findings of the 11 reports published by the United Nations Specialized Agency for tourism on the issue.

Guiding tourism through crisis

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, these reports provided the global tourism sector with timely guidance and assessments on travel restrictions, and examined factors influencing those restrictions, such as tourism’s economic importance, the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and a specific Health and Hygiene Indicator (H&H), as well as grouping destinations according to economic blocs. This allowed for a deeper analysis of the relationship between travel restrictions and sustainability issues.

This new UNWTO report will help in this endeavor and be another milestone in UNWTO’s actions that guided the sector through these unprecedented times

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili says “We welcome WHO’s decision to end  the emergency status for COVID- 19. This is an important signal and a moment to stand back and reflect on how we can overcome challenges only in a collaborative manner. We must ensure that we learn the lessons from this phase of the pandemic, including the ones on travel restrictions. This new UNWTO report will help in this endeavor and be another milestone in UNWTO’s actions that guided the sector through these unprecedented times.”

Varied, dynamic approach to travel restrictions

The findings reveal a diverse response from destinations worldwide on travel restrictions. They show that those with better environmental performance, higher health and hygiene standards, and a greater reliance on tourism tended to lift travel restrictions earlier, which allowed for faster recovery in terms of international tourist arrivals. Conversely, emerging economies and SIDS (Small Island Development States) often imposed full border closures more quickly, maintained them for longer and introduced additional requirements for travellers.

The new report provides an overview on the evolution of travel restrictions, which peaked in May 2020 when 75% of all destinations worldwide had their borders completely closed, bringing international tourism almost to a standstill. With the better understanding on the virus, a more risk-based approach became possible and allowed destinations to replace complete border closure with softer measures, such as testing and vaccination requirements for tourists.

Finally, this new report highlights the current situation with nearly all destinations having lifted COVID-19 related travel restrictions. However, as of 22 March 2023 18 destinations still required vaccination as a condition for entry, which is not consistent with International Health Regulation provisions or current temporary WHO recommendations. UNWTO will continue its close cooperation with WHO monitoring the situation.

Noting the vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic, UNWTO emphasizes the need for a comprehensive re-evaluation of travel restrictions, recovery strategies and the intricate interplay between the environment, health and tourism sectors.

Tourism on Track for Full Recovery UNWTO New Data Shows - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, May 9, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / International tourism is well on its way to returning to pre-pandemic levels, with twice as many people travelling during the first quarter of 2023 than in the same period of 2022.

New Data from UNWTO: What We’ve Learned

The second UNWTO World Tourism Barometer of the year shows that the sector’s swift recovery has continued into 2023. It shows that:

  • Overall, international arrivals reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter of 2023
  • An estimated 235 million tourists travelled internationally in the first three months, more than double the same period of 2022.
  • Tourism has continued to show its resilience. Revised data for 2022 shows over 960 million tourists travelling internationally last year, meaning two-thirds (66%) of pre-pandemic numbers were recovered.

Recovery by Region in Q1 2023:

  • The Middle East saw the strongest performance as the only region exceeding 2019 arrivals (+15%) and the first to recover pre-pandemic numbers in a full quarter.
  • Europe reached 90% of pre-pandemic levels, driven by strong intra-regional demand.
  • Africa reached 88% and the Americas about 85% of 2019 levels
  • Asia and the Pacific accelerated its recovery with  54% of pre-pandemic levels, but this upward trend is set to accelerate now that most destinations, particularly China, have re-opened.

In many places, we are close to or even above pre-pandemic levels of arrivals

The UNWTO data also analyses recovery by sub-region and by destination: Southern Mediterranean Europe and North Africa have also recovered pre-pandemic levels in Q1 2023, while Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central America and the Caribbean all came close to reaching those levels.

What it Means:

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili says: “The start of the year has shown again tourism’s unique ability to bounce back. In many places, we are close to or even above pre-pandemic levels of arrivals. However, we must remain alert to challenges ranging from geopolitical insecurity, staffing shortages, and the potential impact of the cost-of-living crisis on tourism, and we must ensure tourism’s return delivers on its responsibilities as a solution to the climate emergency and as a driver of inclusive development.”

International tourism receipts grew back to hit the USD1 trillion mark in 2022, growing 50% in real terms compared to 2021, driven by the important rebound in international travel. International visitor spending reached 64% of pre-pandemic levels (-36% compared to 2019, measured in real terms). By regions, Europe enjoyed the best results in 2022 with nearly USD 550 billion in tourism receipts (EUR 520 billion), or 87% of pre-pandemic levels. Africa recovered 75% of its pre-pandemic receipts, the Middle East 70% and the Americas 68%. Due to prolonged border shutdowns, Asian destinations earned about 28%.

Looking Ahead: What’s in Store?

The Q1 2023 results are in line with UNWTO’s forward-looking scenarios for the year which project international arrivals to recover 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels. UNWTO’s Panel of Experts expressed their confidence in a strong peak season (May-August) in the Northern Hemisphere, reflected in the latest UNWTO Confidence Index which indicates performance for the period is on track to be even better than 2022.

However, tourism’s recovery also faces some challenges.  According to the UNWTO Panel of Experts, the economic situation remains the main factor weighing on the effective recovery of international tourism in 2023, with high inflation and rising oil prices translating into higher transport and accommodations costs.  As a result, tourists are expected to increasingly seek value for money and travel closer to home. Uncertainty derived from the Russian aggression against Ukraine and other mounting geopolitical tensions, also continue to represent downside risks.

Exceptional Talent
Chef Ricardo Nunes – who previously worked at several Michelin-starred establishments including Potong, Belcanto and Gaggan – is a purveyor of locavorism, seasonality and curiosity. Resident Zymologist, Mateo Polanco, works closely with Chef Ricardo to further develop the intricacies of the fermentation techniques utilised across all dishes and beverages at hom. Chef Ricardo and Mateo have a strong belief in the pursuit of perpetual improvement; this innate curiosity and passion for discovery enables the presentation of endlessly innovative menus.

“The techniques used in the hom kitchen centre around flavour elevation; we will excite curious diners by presenting ingredients in new and inspiring ways, whilst maintaining a respect for the true nature of each ingredient,” said Chef Ricardo Nunes of hom.
The hom team is guided by Restaurant Manager, Peter Lucas. Peter boasts over a decade of experience working in Michelin starred establishments; most recently he was the Restaurant Manager of Baan Tepa in Bangkok and has also worked at the likes of Restaurant Savelberg in Thailand and Ciel Blue in The Netherlands.

Innovative Techniques
Chef Ricardo develops the hom menus by first identifying viable ingredients that grow or live on the island of Phuket – proximity is key. The team then explores how ancient fermentation techniques can be used to maximise flavours, elevating the produce whilst still respecting the true nature of each ingredient. The resulting 10-course tasting menu is well-balanced, thanks to the painstaking detail taken by the hom team. Ultimately, their goal is to surprise curious diners and encourage exploration and discovery. The hom beverage programme will seamlessly complement the food offering.

Protectors and supporters of the local environment, the hom team collaborate closely with local producers. The symbiotic relationship enables knowledge to flow in both directions, ultimately ensuring the safeguarding of local resources and prevention of overproduction.
