IN THE PINK: Atlantis undergoing ‘massive’ renovation

1080 494 wttc2

Atlantis Paradise Island, The Bahamas’ iconic “pink” resort, is going “bigger and bolder” with a multimillion-dollar renovation and a host of new partnerships. The latest chapter in the life of the nearly 25-year-old resort will include “massive upgrades and striking enhancements” designed to continue its legacy of “exuding Bahamian culture (and) serving as a marvel and custodian of marine life,” says the Nassau resort.

Known for its famous pink hue and 80 km of white sand beaches on Paradise Island, the resort will notably redevelop Beach Tower and all Royal Tower guestrooms and suites, reimagine the Atlantis Casino, and add another Michelin-starred chef to its dining roster.

Among the changes:

CUISINE

• Chef Michael White, the multi-starred New York Times and Michelin recognized Italian chef, and former chef/owner of prominent dining destinations Convivio, Alto, Ai Fiori and Marea in New York City, is joining Nobu Matsuhisa and José Andrés, making Atlantis the only resort in the region to boast three Michelin star-rated chefs. The four-time James Beard Award nominee will serve modern coastal Italian cuisine at his latest outpost, Paranza at The Cove, expected to open this year.

• Pita, a Mediterranean-style beachside concession situated near Atlantis’ renowned Aquaventure, offers homemade shawarma, falafel, chilled bites, dips, salads, and desserts to satisfy all-day cravings.

ACCOMMODATION

• Renovation of all guestrooms and suites in The Royal East Tower will be complete this summer, closely followed by newly renovated rooms and suites in The Royal West Tower. Design elements celebrate the natural seascape of aquamarine waters, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs to inspire a soothing environment where guests can relax and unwind.

• The Royal’s renowned Bridge Suite is on track for total renovation and completion in 2023. The epitome of relaxed luxury on a grand scale, the design elements will include bold, organic, rich, and opulent textures and details that reflect the legend of Atlantis and its oceanic design motif found throughout the resort. Gold finishes will remind guests of found treasures of the lost city of Atlantis.

• Atlantis will open a brand-new “oasis within an oasis,” resort dubbed Somewhere Else. Replacing the current site of The Beach Tower, this unique oceanfront escape, opening in 2024, will offer 400 guestrooms and suites alongside top-tier dining venues, lushly landscaped grounds, multiple pools, recreation areas, upscale amenities, and live performances – all within easy reach of the myriad of dining and entertainment options synonymous with Atlantis.

ENTERTAINMENT

• The Atlantis Casino will undergo a refresh that will include modern finishes, and flowing lines echoing the refractions of the sea. Other updates will include the expansion of the Atlantis Casino’s two on-site lounges, an exciting high-limit slots lounge, and an expansion of the exclusive gaming salon.

• The Cove, the resort’s luxury all-suite hotel, recently debuted the Lapis Club Lounge offering daily breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, and a full-service bar along with views of Paradise Island. The hotel also introduced Sapphire Services, new bespoke concierge offerings, including bookable experiences such as intimate beach dinners, exclusive programming at the resort’s 5.7- hectare marine mammal habitat, Dolphin Cay, and private cabanas. The adults-only Cove Pool will also undergo a refresh.

• Splashers, the pool and water playground for Atlantis’s youngest guests, will be adding thrill slides, climbing areas, and more later this year.

Meanwhile, Atlantis Blue Project Foundation (ABPF), the resort’s non-profit and conservation organization, celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Since its inception in 2007, the foundation has been an environmental leader in The Bahamas, creating coral nurseries to propagate corals, cultivating, and donating hundreds of mangroves each year to help restore wetlands around The Bahamas, and educatethe local community about ocean conservation.

Moxy’s stylish and smart bedrooms intermix edgy details with functionality and are cleverly designed to maximize space, allowing guests the flexibility to adapt the room to their needs. Enjoy the smart features of a fun-sized work surface and peg walls instead of closets, as the avatar will need all the space when they start busting dance moves on the bed for the challenge.

The fun and playful energy of Moxy can be found across vibrant destinations in Asia Pacific, such as the Moxy Osaka Shin Umeda, just around the corner from Osaka’s buzzing shopping and entertainment districts. The brand’s spirited lifestyle touches include the signature Bar Moxy, high-energy spaces such as The Terrace, and graffiti-emblazoned Lounge where guests can sip on cocktails and socialize. Located in the heart of Seoul, Moxy Seoul Insadong makes the perfect basecamp for the young-at-heart to let loose in the city. Before hitting the town, guests can enjoy the panoramic city views from its off-the-wall rooftop bar, Seoul at Moxy. THE WORLD’S BEST CITIES: Two Canadian cities make the list

927 1080 wttc2

Scotland scores big in Time Out’s ranking of the world’s best 53 cities in 2022. Edinburgh takes the No.1 spot, followed by Chicago, Medellin in Colombia and Glasgow as number 4. Amsterdam rounds out the top 5.

The 2022 Best Cities Index was drawn up via a survey of 20,000 city dwellers around the world. Time Out says that the guide points ‘people in the direction of the places that locals are raving about’ and putting an emphasis on ‘the things that make cities great places to visit as well as to live’.

Edinburgh has been praised as the most beautiful and walkable city in the world by those polled.

1. Edinburgh
First-place Edinburgh is ‘the most beautiful city in the world’ and where ‘self-expression is encouraged.’

95 percent of residents say this year’s gold medal winner ‘is the most beautiful city in the world, and 93 percent claim it is also the most walkable city’ ideal for visitors who are looking to explore historic landmarks, architecture and scenic hotspots on foot.

2. Chicago
Chicago earned the second place spot with the second-highest food-and-drink-scene rating in the world, with 96 percent saying there is ‘great choice’, Time Out reveals.

Ninety-five percent of those polled say there is always something to do in the art and culture scene too, we’re told.

3. Medellin
Third in the ranking, Medellin was once the home of notorious drug baron and ‘King of Cocaine’ Pablo Escobar. But in 2022, new entry Medellin in Colombia is ‘the place to visit for those looking for a good time’.

According to the guide, Medellin tops the charts for its food and drink (97 percent) and nightlife and partying (90 percent) scenes, as well as ranking first for community spirit (94 percent).

Time Out also notes that there are plenty of ‘design-forward boutique hotels popping up all over the city, showcasing impressive Colombian craftsmanship’.

4. Glasgow
Glasgow, which ranks fourth, ‘excels at being outgoing and at going out’, according to Time Out. The second Scottish city to make the top five, Glasgow is described by 78 percent of the locals as the ‘friendliest city in the world this year’.

Time Out notes: ‘It’s also the second-most affordable city, with 87 percent saying it wasn’t expensive, making 2022 is the perfect time to visit and explore and meet the locals. It’s a city that excels at being outgoing and at going out.’

The guide recommends checking out the city’s ‘burgeoning dining scene’ and SWG3 – the ‘world’s first body-heated club’, where ‘dancing literally helps keep the lights on’.

5. Amsterdam
Fifth-place Amsterdam is considered “a city where (people) can be themselves … the easiest city in the world to express who you are (according to 89 percent of residents) and the second-most progressive in the world,” says Time Out.

Unsurprisingly, 100 percent of residents agree that their famously cycling-centric city is easy to cycle around.

The certification and distinction Biosphere of the program “Commitment to Tourism Sustainability Destination Barcelona Biosphere”, was given to Real Club de Golf El Prat because of all the effort put into making the business of golf a sustainable one.

The project, born in 2017, has been led by the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR), the Barcelona Business bureau, the Barcelona Council, and the Barcelona’s Tourism Bureau.

Its goal is to recognize those companies that work towards a respectful management of the resources of the environment and the culture as well as a social and economic return to the city of Barcelona. The Commitment is based on a methodology that works around the 17 goals of the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda.

This certificate is the first one approved worldwide, and allows companies, entities and destinations that carry out prevention and hygiene actions against COVID-19, to be recognized in any country in the world, with the aim of generating safe spaces for travellers.

The commitment to the Biosphere responds both to the desire to promote more sensible tourism by tour operators, as well as to the wish of visitors to travel respecting the environment as much as possible. The deployment of these measures means a new kind of tourism, which increases the competitiveness of Barcelona as a destination, formed by the Capital and the 12 counties of its province.

The Destination Barcelona receives the Platinum Certification

Destination Barcelona has today become the first destination in the world to receive the Platinum Certification thanks to the commitment of its institutions to promote a kind of tourism that is respectful and committed to the environment. ALPAC Capital becomes Euronews Majority Shareholder

500 267 wttc2

ALPAC Capital becomes Euronews Majority Shareholder - TRAVELINDEXLyon, France, July 11, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / The acquisition of the majority of the capital of Euronews by ALPAC Capital, announced in December 2021, has been finalised, following the approval of the investment by the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and the Recovery. ALPAC Capital is an investment fund manager based in Portugal, owned by Pedro Vargas David and Luís Santos.

Recognising the unique European DNA of Euronews and the full potential of the company, ALPAC intends to strengthen the European identity of the Euronews project, in particular by deepening the dialogue with Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels, and by continuing the media’s digitalisation process, as well as its diversification efforts.

“I am very pleased to see ALPAC acquire a stake in Euronews. We firmly believe in the need to amplify Euronews’ voice in the European media landscape, and even beyond the continent’s borders,” says Pedro Vargas David. “Europe has experienced times of instability in the past decade: financial, sanitary and now military crises, which, not so long ago, would have been practically unthinkable. The European Union has thus played an even more central role in our lives. For the EU, as it is our wish, to be more efficient and strong, it must be even more democratic and responsible: none of this is possible without a strong and free press”, the CEO of ALPAC Capital adds.

Pedro Vargas David goes on to say: “Euronews’ European and independent offer must not only be supported but also reinforced” and specifies that “this is the meaning and the purpose of ALPAC’s investment”.

The Portuguese journalist Graça Franco, former director of news at Rádio Renascença and until very recently Ombudswoman at RTP (Portugal’s public television), has been appointed Chair of Euronews’ Editorial Council.

The Editorial Council is responsible for discussing all matters and studying all actions and decisions relating to the editorial line and editorial quality of Euronews, in particular with regard to compliance with its editorial charter, Euronews’ news policies and guidelines, and the strategic guiding principles defined in this respect.

Commenting on her appointment, Graça Franco says: “Euronews has for nearly three decades now provided a public service mission and will continue to do so.”

“Europe and the world are changing and it is time to try to better explain matters, to fight fake news and to continue to uphold Euronews’ principles, which, even after so many years, are still very relevant“, underlines the journalist, who takes on the role of “guardian” of the media’s guiding principles. “I consider this role to be somewhat of a continuity of my Ombudswoman role. It is the most honourable role that one can be entrusted with: to fight for the freedom of their peers”.

The recent appointment of Guillaume Dubois, former CEO of BFM TV and Director of Broadcasting of LCI – two of France’s leading news channels – as CEO of the group is part of this dynamic which aims to achieve break-even for the company by 2023. “The new impetus given by the arrival of ALPAC Capital will allow Euronews to further develop and improve its television and digital offering,” says Guillaume Dubois.

“The war in Ukraine reminds us how important it is for people to be able to rely on trustworthy, high-quality news, specialised on European issues in a broad sense“, adds the Euronews’ CEO.

Euronews is a leading European news media, broadcast 24/7, available in 17 languages. Recognised for the credibility of its content, Euronews is broadcast in 160 countries and more than 400 million households worldwide, reaching more than 145 million people every month, both on television and on digital platforms, according to the Global Web Index.

About Euronews
Euronews is a leading international news channel and one of the best known and most trusted news brands operating across Europe. Worldwide, Euronews is broadcast in 160 countries and distributed in over 400 million homes – including 67% of homes in the European Union + UK. Young People Must Be Active Participants to Restart Tourism

500 308 wttc2

UNWTO Young People Must Be Active Participants to Restart Tourism - TRAVELINDEXSorrento, Italy, July 9, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Young people have always been an integral part of tourism. Countless destinations, in every global region, depend on them to support businesses and livelihoods, and the return of young travellers as the world opens up again brings hope for many millions of people. At the same time, young people also make up a significant proportion of the tourism workforce. Indeed, our sector is one of the leading providers of youth empowerment, providing opportunities for everyone, regardless of their backgrounds or academic attainment.

UNWTO recognizes the importance of youth. For this reason, youth empowerment, including through offering education and training opportunities as well as access to decent jobs, is one of our key priorities. But we are committed to going even further. Young people must not only be beneficiaries of tourism’s restart, but they must also be active participants in it. Now is the time to bring young voices on board as we make big decisions that will set the course for our sector for years to come.

The first UNWTO Global Youth Tourism Summit confirmed that the young talent is there. So too is the determination to make a difference. For one week in Italy, we brought together some of the brightest young minds, to hear their concerns, but above all, their vision for the sector. This was a landmark first – for the young people, for UNWTO and for the tourism sector as a whole. It put young people in the driving seat. And it gave them a unique opportunity to engage directly with the sector’s leaders, including business heads and Ministers of Tourism.

Young people must not only be beneficiaries of tourism’s restart, but they must also be active participants in it

Out of the week came the Sorrento Call to Action, a call from the young participants to have a greater say in the decisions that will affect them whether as tourists themselves or as beneficiaries of the sector. While only signed by the delegates present in Sorrento, it is a true representation of the determination of global youth not to be left on the side-lines anymore. It also makes clear the priorities of the next generation of tourists and tourism leaders, namely accelerating the shift towards greater sustainability, most notably through the development and promotion of green transport, for greater inclusion and respect for human rights, and finally ensuring that the benefits tourism delivers are enjoyed as widely and fairly as possible.

To put these ideas and ambitions into action, young people need to be given a seat at the decision-making table. Youth-led organizations need to be invited to monitor and assess the development of tourism and, if necessary, be in a position where they can hold governments and businesses to account.

Every part of the wide global tourism ecosystem will benefit enormously from embracing the power of youth. Right now, the planet is home to around 1.8 billion people between the ages of 10-24— the largest generation of youth in human history. Almost 90% of them live in developing countries, and in many of them they make up the majority of the population. It’s here that they can make the biggest difference, and tourism is without doubt the most powerful vehicle to drive transformation and growth.

As World Tourism Day 2022 makes clear in its theme, we now have an opportunity to rethink tourism – where we are and where we are going. Young people must be active protagonists in this vital process. The climate action movement has shown what can be achieved if young voices are brought on board. Here, young activists have helped set the agenda and pushed governments to raise their ambitions. Tourism must now do the same, and UNWTO is ready to lead by example.
