Thailand is honored to host the Summit in its 32nd year, which is an excellent opportunity to showcase Thailand’s potential as an international conference and convention host, and “World Destination” following the coronavirus pandemic.

Global Summit of Women 2020 will be held from 23-25 June 2022 at the Centara Grand Hotel and Bangkok Convention Centre under the theme “Women: Creating Opportunities in the New Reality.” Women leaders in business and government sectors from around the world will attend, in a great opportunity to highlight the potential of Thailand to international delegates as a “World Destination,” both in hosting international conferences and the readiness to open the country for tourism. Thailand was previously scheduled to host the event in 2020, but this was postponed to 2022 by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Irene Natividad, President of the Global Summit of Women 2020, said that apart from its natural and historic bounty, Thailand ranks high in women’s economic participation in business and government at both the regional and global levels.

“As Summit President, I am looking forward to bringing this renowned Summit to Thailand, a global gathering of women in business and government from around the world. The 2022 Summit theme: ‘Women: Creating Opportunities in the New Reality,’ will focus on driving the post-pandemic economy. The new global marketplace has been changed by technology and innovation, meaning that now there are new ways for women engage in business transformation through e-commerce. Male and female senior executives of multinational corporations are expected from countries as diverse as South Africa, Vietnam, France, Spain, Mexico, Germany, and Kazakhstan. There is genuine excitement in being able to meet in person for the first time, in over two years since the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Summit President said that the upcoming Summit would be a dynamic, fact-filled, and engaging conference on what can be done to move the needle on economic equity for women and create new opportunities post-pandemic. It will help with active cross-border networking, robust best practice exchanges, inspiring presentations, focusing on creative solutions to advance women’s economic progress globally in a post-COVID world as workers, small business owners, consumers, and investors.

The conference will underline how women will be critical players in the economic recovery, as throughout the last decade, women have contributed to raising national GDPs globally.
Ms Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Chair of the Thai Host Committee and former Minister of Tourism, said that the Thai Host Committee has delighted and honored that Thailand will be hosting this year’s Summit. It is the biggest stage for international women leaders in the world. It confirms our capabilities to host conferences that will impress participants and enhance Thailand’s image and confidence in its economy.

“The Global Summit of Women 2022 will generate confidence in the Thai economy, focusing on continued economic development and promoting new investment. I am sure that this Summit will empower women and encourage cooperation between every sector to build a new generation for economic recovery and a better world. The content of the three-day conference will highlight future business opportunities and enable networking to promote mutual economic success.”

Ms Kobkarn is also confident in strict measures implemented to control the spread of COVID-19 at the Summit. This Summit edition is also special for its “Carbon Neutral” format, which will monitor greenhouse gas emissions from its various activities. The activities include electricity, participants’ travel, catering, and waste management. There will be support for offsetting emissions from activities by purchasing carbon credits from the Project to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Thailand. The Summit will also present community products from around Thailand to create opportunities for local communities to develop as entrepreneurs at the international level.

Mr Siripakorn Chiosamut, Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, and Marketing Director at the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT), talked about Thailand’s readiness to open the country to women leaders at this international conference and international tourists.

“This world-level convention in Thailand is an important step to build confidence internationally that Thailand is ready to welcome tourists after the long slowdown in tourism during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. It is also an opportunity to provide an impressive tourist experience to the women leaders who are delegates at the Global Summit of Women 2022. TAT has designated 2022 as Visit Thailand Year 2022: Amazing New Chapters. Women currently have a key role in driving the economy because of their capabilities for increased income. They are also one of the major market segments with high tourism potential because of their confidence and courage in deciding to travel.”

Mr Siripakorn was confident that this Global Summit of Women would be successful due to the cooperation of various departments and organizations in Thailand, who have come together to host the event and show off Thailand’s potential in tourism and business investment. It will help promote Thailand as a Preferred Destination and a World Destination.

Ms Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, thanked the Summit Organizing Committee for seeing the promise of Thailand as a forum for vital social topics at the international level, showcasing Thailand’s potential to host international conferences.

“The Global Summit of Women is a world-class International Convention supporting the roles and rights of women at a global forum for women leaders. It will inspire the world community to see the importance of Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusiveness, consistent with Thailand’s 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan. The Summit will welcome women leaders from 60 countries worldwide as delegates and demonstrate Thailand’s capability to host world-class conferences. We expect the Summit to generate inward income for the country of around 80 million baht.”

Ms Nichapa said that although Thailand has been continually impacted by the COVID-19 situation recently, the MICE industry in Thailand could generate income to Thailand of over 33.3 billion baht, creating over 46,000 jobs. Many international conferences are scheduled in Thailand this year, including the APEC Thailand 2022 Leaders’ Summit.

The Global Summit of Women is an international forum providing crucial connections for women business leaders, professionals, and administrators in the government, private and social sectors worldwide, in a network of cooperation and sharing experiences. The aim is to expand business opportunities and promote sustainable global economic development. This year, the Global Summit of Women will prioritize women’s engagement in economic recovery after the impact of COVID-19, which has caused many changes in lifestyles and ways of doing business. It also prioritizes technology and innovation to have a vital role in this critical transformation. The Summit also promotes equality between the sexes in business roles and driving the economy, which has been a core component of the Summit over the last 30 years.

WEEDING OUT THE TRILLIUM: Is Ontario’s flower getting smoked out?

1080 364 wttc2

An organization dedicated to the modernization of traditional symbols and icons in Ontario have set their sights on the Trillium which was adopted by the Legislature as Ontario’s official flower in 1937.

The Organization for the Rejuvenation of Emblems in Ontario (OREO) says the Trillium is an outdated symbol which flowers for about a month in spring and is consequently seldom seen by the majority of Ontarians unless they spot it on their Driver’s Licences, Health Cards or other provincial documentation.

“To have a flower that blooms annually as a Provincial symbol is patently ridiculous,” said Beryl Amaranth, chair of OREO. “Ontario needs robust flora to demonstrate the strength, potency and vigor of its people. It should ubiquitous. Its potency and staying power strong and accessible. You shouldn’t have to skulk about in the spring to find it. It’s even illegal to pick one.”

And OREO and Amaranth’s choice for Ontario’s provincial flower? Cannabis sativa. More commonly known as just plain cannabis, or marijuana, weed, dope, pot, grass, ganja, MaryJane just for starters.

Egon Smee, CEO of Flowersareourfriends.com, professed horror at OREO’s suggestion. “It’s a ludicrous idea. The White Trillium is gorgeous. It has three broad leaves, three small green sepals, three petals, and a three-sectioned seedpod. Even its genus name, trillium, refers to this phenomenon.”

“What’s more,” he added angrily, “she should get her facts straight – it is not illegal to pick a trillium. It is only illegal to remove them from government properties like provincial parks. Not that you should pick them – leave them as nature intended for everyone to enjoy.”

“Besides,” said Smee, “would you want a marijuana leaf on your licence or OHIP card? I certainly wouldn’t!”

“But many would,” scoffed Amaranth, “and you would be reminded of Ontario every time you passed a cannabis store or smoked a joint. All year round – not just a couple of weeks in spring. We’ve been canvassing MPPs– it’s a non-partisan issue. We have the votes.”

“We’ll fight it tooth and nail. We’ll picket Queen’s Park. This is just wrong, wrong, wrong.” Said Smee.

“It’s the right emblem for Ontario. It’s both strong and relaxed. It’s perfect. He’s just blowing smoke,” laughed the fictitious Amaranth, “and as it’s April 1st, I’m blowing smoke too.”

Happy April Fool’s Day readers. Here’s something true about Ontario’s Trillium logo we thought you might enjoy.

A stylized version of the trillium has been the Ontario government’s official logo since 1964, when it was first created by the Conservative government of John Robarts.

An updated version was designed by Ernst Barenscher at Norman B. Hathaway Associates in 1972, at the request of the Conservative government of Bill Davis.
Over the next 24 years, the logo pretty much remained the same. Then, in 2006, the Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty completely revamped the logo.

The new logo quickly became known as the “three men in a hot tub” logo — once you see it, you can’t unsee it — and was widely criticized both for its design and cost.

In 2019, the Conservative government of Doug Ford restored the logo to its original design with some variations.

PUBS, PATIOS & BARS: Ted talk

1080 494 wttc2

Richmond is a lovely town on the southwestern outskirts of London ¬– known for its many parks and open spaces, riverside bona fides, celebrity residents (including Mick Jagger), and now “Ted Lasso.”

If you haven’t joined the cult – fan club might be a more fitting term – or maybe living under a rock (though not in Richmond), Ted Lasso is a TV show sensation on Disney+, set in the London borough.

Ostensibly about a fictional British soccer team, Richmond FC, that imports an American football coach (Jason Sudeikis) who knows nothing about the sport, it is warm, funny, insightful into both British and Brit “football” culture, and equally appealing to viewers who care little about the latter (including my wife, who after being harassed into watching, went on to binge watch the two full seasons in a matter of days.)

So, watch the show.

But to our point, for those who have watched, they’ll know that, outside of the football stadium, perhaps the most prominent setting in the show is the local pub – reflecting the reality that British pub culture and football are inextricably linked.

The establishment in question is called The Crown and Anchor in the show, which is a fictional venue based on a real pub – The Prince’s Head. (The hilarious matronly, no-nonsense manager Mae is one of the unsung stars of the show).

Located across from Richmond Green, just a short walk from rail and tube stations, the pub is now the site of pilgrimages from fans (like an industry colleague and Lasso devotee I know who was planning a visit this month).

If you go, know that the Prince’s Head marquee was covered by Crown and Anchor only for filming; and like Cheers in Boston, the interior doesn’t necessarily match the TV version.

Visitors will also note real street scenes from the show, including Paved Court, where Ted lives, and the signature red phone box; plus, the general atmosphere of charming Richmond. (It should be noted that Twickenham also doubles as the setting for Richmond in the show; also, there is no actual football stadium to see in Richmond).

As for the pub, the real Prince’s Head dates to 1705 when it was known as The Duke of Ormonde’s Head, later the Duke’s Head (after Ormonde was disgraced), and then The Prince’s Head since 1778. The pub briefly lost its license around 1910 for allowing women in – an offence that thankfully is no longer in effect. (With such a history, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that the pub doesn’t even allude to its current star status on its web site).

A “Fullers” pub, the Head features Fullers ales, but also craft lagers and seasonal ales, ciders, spirits, exclusive wines, and artisan soft drinks. Even tea, which show fans will recall that Ted would never order.

The kitchen serves familiar pub fare like pies, fish and chips, and burgers, but also more varied and elegant fare, like steak and wild game faggots. Like many pubs in Britain, Sunday means roasts.

Patrons will find sports (rugby, but apparently and surprisingly not football) on TV and there’s live music and an open mic night.

Located at 28 The Green, Richmond, opening hours are noon to 11 p.m. (10:30 on Sundays). Or subject to streaming any time!

UNWTO and Travelindex Group Sign MOU to Help SMEs Thrive in Post Pandemic World - Zurab Pololikashvili - Bernard MetzgerMadrid, Spain, March 31, 2022 – The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Travelindex Group joined forces to help SMEs succeed in a post-pandemic world and to raise socio-economic awareness of the tourism sector. UNWTO estimates that micro- and small businesses employ more than half of the sector’s workforce. Small businesses are important engines of employment and economic opportunity but are facing significant challenges due to the COVID-19 crisis and the accompanying disruptions, as well as the economic impact of the pandemic.

This first ever partnership with Travelindex Group forms part of UNWTO’s wider shift towards harnessing the power of digital innovation to drive the restart of tourism by giving SME’s the possibility to reach a wider audience, to grow and develop their market share and position.

Travelindex Group has built one of the world’s largest travel and tourism ecosystem with millions of highly engaged visitors and followers across 240 destinations. The ecosystem is open and content-driven, connecting directly over 800,000 companies worldwide through 90 owned online properties and social media channels.

Historically and worldwide, SMEs always played a key role in the growth of tourism, and contribute to employment creation, wealth creation, poverty alleviation and income generation. However, they face numerous obstacles and challenges in particular in an increasingly digital world. Travelindex Group offers a range of dedicated websites to the industry as well as services that help empower local SMEs for more online visibility and reach.

UNWTO’s partnership with the Travelindex Group will show that sustainable and responsible travel is possible, if not indispensable, in the post-pandemic world. Joint efforts will highlight the importance of the role played by small, medium size and micro-enterprises, all playing a decisive role and vital contribution to the sector’s recovery.

“Countless small businesses and destinations are ready to welcome the world back to their doorsteps,” said Bernard Metzger, Founder and CEO at Travelindex Group. “Travelindex Group is proud to provide a platform and ecosystem not only for large groups but, at no costs, for small businesses in the tourism sector to help them, and their employees and families, to recover faster and more sustainably. Our aim is to contribute to the growth and development of local SMEs and, ultimately, of the entire sector.”

One of the key websites of the Group in this exercise is Sustainable First, a platform that features truly sustainable businesses and destinations, focuses on the impact these have in their local community and which Sustainable Development Goals they are working towards. “This partnership is a natural fit for us, our values and mission are truly aligned with UNWTO’s. Our platform is all about highlighting best practices in sustainability in Tourism and we are focused on bringing especially the amazing sustainable work SMEs are doing, already leading by example, to a wider audience.” said Mafalda Borea, Chair and Co-Founder of Sustainable First and Board Member of Travelindex Group.

Advancing UNWTO’s digital shift
This collaboration with Travelindex Group builds on UNWTO’s ongoing turn towards greater use of digital tools and visual storytelling to make clear the relevance and importance of tourism to economies, societies, and planet. The Organization has accelerated this shift in its efforts to scale up Member support and enable them to better seize the advantages of digital communications platforms.

In the meantime, we are pleased to be returning to the dynamic aviation hub of Doha and the warm hospitality for which Qatar Airways, our host airline, has become famous.
