A Modern-Day Community Hub
The lobby is at the heart of the guest experience at Sheraton Mianyang. With a flow that is natural, intuitive, and uncomplicated, guests have what they need within arm’s reach, all set against an inviting backdrop that feels warm and comfortable yet refined. A dedicated Community Manager is a friendly face that is always on hand to help guests and locals with anything they need, while also delivering unique guest experiences through curated community programs and events.

Sheraton Mianyang features many of the signature elements of the new vision. This includes the Community Table, an inviting, purpose-built workspace that anchors the hotel’s lobby and allow guests to work, eat, and drink while soaking up the energy of the space. Following Sheraton’s philosophy to embrace both form and function, these tables are custom designed with amenities to keep guests productive, including built-in lighting, outlets, and charging stations.

The Studios, flexible gathering spaces available to book whenever a guest needs it, celebrate collaborative working and connecting with others in a less formal setting. Enclosed with glass, the tech-enabled Studios allow guests to contribute to the energy of the public space while also providing privacy and focus for everything from small group meetings to private dining experiences. The Booths are also strategically placed throughout the lobby, perfect for a spontaneous phone call to connect privately with friends, family, or colleagues from afar.

Built with its global, productivity-focused guest in mind, Sheraton Mianyang’s new elevated food & beverage offering creates a focal point in the lobby experience. In the guestrooms, guests are welcomed into a bright, well-lit space with warm, residential appeal, comprised of soft finishes and light wood tones. Most of the guestrooms and suites boast either a lake or mountain view from large French windows, with selected rooms featuring a large balcony to enable guests to stay rejuvenated. All guestrooms feature elements designed for productivity, such as a height-adjustable worktable, integrated power and charging, and layered lighting. ELLEN ROSEMOND

1080 364 wttc2

If you were at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport in the eighties and nineties, working with the tour operators or the charter carriers you likely remember Ellen Rosemond. A small blonde firecracker who despite a beaming smile, simply didn’t suffer fools and who seldom had a thought she didn’t immediately voice. Ellen ruffled a lot of feathers, bruised some egos but could also be just as kind, considerate, caring and funny as she could be brash and brazen.

A thoughtful, intelligent woman with a degree in Art History and Slavic languages from the University of Toronto, Ellen steered her love of travel into a career as a travel agent, and then taught her favourite subject at Sheridan College, guiding the first class through the CTC course and taking the exam with her students, garnering the fourth highest mark in Ontario – which seriously annoyed her – fourth highest? Not good enough!

She left teaching to co-found Cygnet Travel Representatives Inc. a service for tour operators and corporations that offered dispatch, reception, concierge, general airport and liaison services with airlines and aviation operators for over 18 years at YYZ. Along the way she also concurrently co-founded Cygnet Tennis, working with the Women’s Tennis Association and Tennis Canada to manufacture and provide merchandise at Canadian tournaments. The final entrepreneurial venture for the company, and the one she perhaps loved most, was Cygnet Gallery, an art gallery in Toronto’s Yorkville district.

To meet Ellen was to remember her. Small in stature but with a huge temperament and a fiery temper which could dissolve in seconds into a radiant smile and a funny quip. Complicated and complex, she was both tough and tender, inflexible and lenient. Despite serious and painful back issues, she worked as hard or harder than anyone else and was on her feet (in Chanel pumps) for hours on end without a complaint. She had unlimited patience when teaching or explaining a problem, and none at all if she felt the listener was not concentrating on the issue at hand.

Ellen had a lively sense of humour, a quick wit and a keen intellect. She loved to travel and did so as often as she could.

A great joy was in rummaging around auction houses and art galleries, be it St. Ives, Edinburgh, Collingwood, or Toronto, or looking for treasures and unknown artists at The Royal Academy of Art’s Summer Exhibition in London.

She loved the theatre, was passionate about music, and for many years, had subscription seats to both the TSO and the Canadian Opera Company. Her taste however was eclectic, and she enjoyed all types of music including jazz, pop and rock. In art too, she had varied tastes ranging from abstract modern to old masters and could discuss them all with knowledge and intelligence.

Ellen Rosemond died suddenly this week. She was my business partner for almost twenty years and my friend for much longer. I will miss her as will the many friends and associates who remember this small woman with the huge personality.

RELAX. IT’S NOT WHAT IT SEEMS.

652 860 wttc2

The problem began with a piece in the Globe and Mail about a travel deal offered by Rocky Mountaineer that clearly stated, “you must book directly through Rocky Mountaineer (bookings through travel agents are not eligible) to take advantage of thee promotions.” Adding insult to injury, and stupidity to a seemingly dumb decision, Rocky Mountaineer is currently hosting agents and media on an inaugural train journey.

Well didn’t that cause a kerfuffle? Social media went nutso as agents and others tried to contact the company for an explanation.

Part of the deal also involved earning up to 20,000 Aeroplan points and one agent wrote on Facebook that, “We have already complained. Their response is that we have the option to buy Aeroplan points at our expense and match them. Clearly they do not value the retail trade.”

However, apparently things were not quite as bleak they seemed. Word soon came that travel agents could actually book Rocky Mountaineer’s Canadian Resident offer, but to do that they have to book it through the rail company’s call centre.

The Travel Press quoted Nicole Ford, director, communications and stakeholder relations for Rocky Mountaineer saying, “Travel agents are valued partners. Our call centre is experiencing higher than usual wait times, but we are prioritizing 2021 bookings.”

“If an agent is looking to book a client with this offer, they can do so by calling one of our in-house vacation consultants.”

Ford added that the Canadian Resident offer can also be combined with the Fairmont offer on eligible bookings. You can check them out HERE

It’s not the first time. It’s not a one-off

But this whole situation raised some issues. TripCentral president Richard Vanderlubbe, who has chaired ACTA in the past and sat on various Boards suggests there is a larger issue here that is worth exploring.

“ It’s classic in the domestic tourism industry.” Vanderlubbe told us in an email yesterday. “Our domestic industry is small and cottage like in many ways compared to other countries with more developed and full year infrastructure. The sophistication is limited. Hotels and other tourism businesses often do this – offer a local deal direct to consumers – and then they, and provincial tourism organizations and ministries – wonder why there is so little action by the travel industry in Canada selling Canada to Canadians.

“When you’re so often undercut, you just give up. If they fail to understand that by bundling their products with flights and working with tour operators and travel agencies to offer value without touching published prices, they can fill unsold rooms without being market disruptive.”

Vanderlubbe rightly points out that, “The classic marketing mistake ‘let’s cut price and fund it from not paying a distributor’ repeats over and over again. Trying to cut price for local rubber tire / direct market incremental business is just so stupid. They are counting on the fact that international travellers won’t notice the local / direct deal. Meanwhile the internet puts pressure even on foreign tour operators trying to promote the product.”

“It’s this idea that the promotion and distribution of their product and service can be done cheaper by themselves, or that the trade will do it for free, or that a consumer will knowingly pay more to buy it from a distributor.”

That path is ‘folly’ says Vanderlubbe, adding, “The airlines, cruise lines, large hotel chains all learned their lessons on this over many years, but it appears bit players and newbies fall into the trap or repeat the mistake.”

All true. This is a lesson that needs to be learned – and remembered.

Here’s the bit from the Globe and Mail.

Miraval Resorts Launches Celebration of the Arts

1018 619 wttc2

Miraval Resorts Launches Celebration of the Arts - TRAVELINDEXArizona, United States, July 8, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Miraval Resorts, Hyatt’s destination spa brand with three award-winning resorts, today announces Celebration of the Arts, a new program designed to promote the therapeutic benefits of the arts. The Celebration of the Arts, which launches this summer at Miraval Arizona, Miraval Austin and Miraval Berkshires, will debut new art programming that is designed to encourage spiritual and emotional nourishment. The new activities will complement and raise awareness for the diverse, existing art programming available at Miraval resorts, which has been central to the brand’s wellness offerings for more than 25 years. As part of the program, Miraval resorts will also invite a celebrated local artist to stay in-residence at each of the three properties to create a mural for the resort and interact with guests as they observe the creative process.

“Miraval has long been an advocate of the arts and its powerful benefits of mindfulness,” said Susan Santiago, head of Miraval operations at Hyatt. “For years, the Miraval brand has championed the works of local artisans, from the sculpture collection at Miraval Arizona to the paintings within the halls of Miraval Berkshires, and has offered creative activities that allow guests to focus on the present moment and look inwards. We’re excited to launch the Celebration of the Arts this summer, which will further immerse our guests in the culture of their destination and help them cultivate meaningful relationships with themselves, other guests and our resident artists.”

Miraval Arizona

During the Celebration of the Arts, Miraval Arizona will invite Lucinda Hinojos to be artist-in-residence this summer. Lucinda, who is of Xicana, Apache and Yaqui descent, is a self-taught muralist and painter who began her arts career by curating underground art exhibits for local artists. She advocates for women’s and immigrant’s rights through her work, and she has frequently worked with immigrant rights organizations to organize art shows. From June 28 to July 23, Lucinda will design and bring to life a mural that embodies her artistic flair and values.

Guests at Miraval Arizona will be encouraged to explore their imagination and enhance their intuition through a myriad of programs, including Paint the Music, a thought-provoking workshop that uses music to immerse guests in an unconstrained and playful experience while guiding them to produce a personal piece of artwork. Guests will also be able to further expand their consciousness in another program titled Artistic Expression Under Glass¸ where they learn to embrace their artistic abilities and foster a greater sense of wellbeing through the art of reverse-painting, a technique that asks guests to work backwards and rethink their approach to accomplishing goals.

Miraval Austin

Self-taught artist Sadé Lawson will be the resident artist at Miraval Austin throughout August. Sadé, who channels the ambitious and creative energy of women in her life into her artwork, has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Austin since 2018. Using her creativity to process the world around her, Sadé harnesses the power of color to address topics from mental wellbeing and racial identity to hope and inspiration. During her stay at Miraval Austin, Sadé will design a mural by the resort’s Discovery Pool.

Coinciding with Sadé’s residency this summer, Miraval Austin will offer Mindful Mandala Rock Painting, a workshop where guests paint and sculpt mandalas, ancient circles that can be used to center oneself and connect with others. Guests will also be able to partake in a new class titled Suminigashi: The Art of Letting Go. During this activity, guests paint with ink on water, creating moving marble designs that flow without manipulation. This beautiful art form reminds guests to free themselves of expectation, a philosophy that mirrors the unrestricted strokes of ink as they glide above the water.

Miraval Berkshires

In August, painter and graphic designer Jesse Tobin McCauley will be featured as Miraval Berkshires’ artist-in-residence and create a mural in the tunnel that connects the main resort grounds with the Meadowview Farm and Barn. A resident of Pittsfield, Mass., Jesse studied art at Otis College of Art & Design and has worked as a graphic designer in Los Angeles, New York and the Berkshires. She sits on the board of the Berkshire Art Association, a non-profit organization that aims to increase local access to the arts, and is also part of Group W, an art collective that conceptualizes and holds large-scale exhibitions. Her artwork, which is often characterized by impactful bursts of saturated color, evokes a sense of whimsy and joy from its viewers.

At Miraval Berkshires, guests will be able to partake in the mural’s creation process through interactive chalkboard frames that invite guests to answer introspective questions. Prompts such as “What is your intention?” and “What are you grateful for?” will be displayed in the tunnel, and guests will be encouraged to write their answers on the chalkboards and reflect on their Miraval journey. Coinciding with Jesse’s residency, Miraval Berkshires will also launch a new program named Manifest Your Desires: A Vision Board Creation. During this activity, guests will utilize their creative spirit to construct a vision board, a visual representation of their goals and dreams actualized through imagery and artwork. This activity is intended to inspire and empower guests as they focus their intentions and transform them into reality.

GOOD AS GOLD: Belize ready to come out of its shell

1080 494 wttc2

With Canadians planning and, indeed, actually edging closer to their next vacations, Belize is rolling out the welcome mat for citizens of this country, touting industry-leading health and safety protocols and well-known natural attributes that are high on sustainability.

Belize minister of tourism Anthony Mahler emphasizes the importance of the Canadian market, telling Travel Industry Today that this country makes up about 10% of visitors – about 50,000 per year – to the Central American nation, but also, importantly produces a higher spend than most during an average stay of 10 days. Moreover, Mahler points out that there is a large Canadian ex-pat community in Belize, including snowbirds, and that many more typically visit via cruise ships.

With travel searching and planning a priority for many as the pandemic protocols start to ease and “a light at the end of the tunnel” begins to shine, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has also unveiled a new travelbelize website. Designed to be the country’s official resource centre for travellers, it includes immersive videos and imagery, a virtual interactive map, and a modified flight map to help travellers, and those who book them, plan their stay, and discover a myriad of adventure opportunities, natural attractions, and the cultural diversity.

Additionally, it details the country’s acclaimed Tourism Gold Standard program and WTTC Safe Travels status, the former based on a nine-step process that hotels, tour operators, attractions, and other tourism-related businesses (such as taxis) must implement to be allowed to operate.

Visitors – who are required to show proof of vaccination at least 14 days before arrivals or negative results of a PRC test taken within 96 hours of travel (otherwise will be tested at cost upon arrival) – are required to stay in a gold-standard hotel and must show proof upon arrival that they are. Notably, visitors are no longer required to download the Belize Travel Health App as before.

Mahler says Belize takes the pandemic “seriously,” adding, “It is vital that we are adequately prepared for the return of our guests, and the key to our success lies in developing a strategic framework to ensure a safe and secure experience…”

As such, and with a current COVID-19 case count of just over 300 people in the entire country (as of July 5), he maintains, “We are one of the safest destinations in the world.”

Belize is also one of the most sustainable, he continues, not least because of the destination’s reliance on nature and eco-adventures as the basis of its tourism product.

Canoeing is just one of many nature-based activities for guests at Belize’s Tourism Gold-certified Chaa Creek Lodge.

Adorned with undisturbed flora and fauna, Belize is a sprawling green oasis, featuring tropical rainforest, nature reserves, and ‘no-take’ marine zones that position the region as a largely unspoiled natural wonderland that uniquely links North and South America.

At the same time, the country’s top attraction is its 300-km long barrier reef, making the country’s coast a mecca for divers and snorkelers, with Maher noting, “If you’re a diver, Belize should be on your list of places you want to visit.”

Here is a brief look at Belize’s seven distinct regions:

• Northern Belize: An ideal destination for the ‘off-the-beaten-path’ adventurer, where visitors can have an unspoiled adventure and explore historical sites like Lamanai, one of the largest Maya Sites in the country.

• North Islands: Home to numerous cayes, including Ambergris Caye (the largest island in Belize), the islands are water adventurer’s dream, with stellar snorkeling and diving along the Belize Barrier Reef, the Great Blue Hole, Shark Ray Alleym and Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

• Belize City: A laidback getaway on the central coast with great fishing and rich Creole culture, history and colonial structures, the Belize zoo, and canoeing in the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary.

• Western Belize: Adventure-land, with activities ranging from tree-top ziplining to caving and river tubing. Home to Belmopan, the capital city, which boasts lively and vibrant markets and is a gateway to eco-activities for any level of adventurer.

• Southeast Coast: Defined by adventure and beaches, the “Coast with the Most” boasts Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Reserve, the first jaguar sanctuary, ziplining in Mayflower Bocawina National Park, plus more than 25 kilometres of palm tree lined beaches.

• Southern Belize: Ideal for family vacations, visitors can explore Toledo District and Punta Gorda town, and stroll through many colourful markets. Southern Belize is laden with culture, which is celebrated every Nov. 19 by the Garifuna with the Battle of the Drums and Food Fete.

• Belize Reef: A UNESCO World Heritage Site comprised of 400 cayes and three atolls (coral islands), including renowned Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Great Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye. Each atoll offers a completely different kind of diving experience and for non-diving adventures, Glover’s Reef is a remote area where visitors can stand-up paddleboard, kayak, try fly-fishing and more.

A former British colony that achieved independence in 1981, Belize’s official language is English, though “over the years, we’ve been Latinized,” says Mahler, with creole widely spoken (as well as Spanish).

The country, which has the lowest population and population density in Central America, is also politically and socially stable in an otherwise often troubled neighbourhood.

Mahler notes that Canadians can generally reach Belize easily with typically steady lift from this country. Post-pandemic, WestJet will begin service on Nov. 3 (from YYZ) through to April 30, 2022, while Air Canada is expected to fly again in 2022.

Hyatt Regency Koh Samui Cuts Ribbon on New Resort

1080 747 wttc2

Hyatt Regency Koh Samui Cuts Ribbon on New Resort - TRAVELINDEXKoh Samui, Thailand, July 7, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / One of Thailand’s most anticipated resorts, Hyatt Regency Koh Samui, was unveiled yesterday on Koh Samui. Several VIP guests attended the opening ceremony, which took place in the resort’s showpiece lobby—the longest lobby arrival point in Koh Samui.

Among those present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Ramnet Jaikwang, mayor of Koh Samui, Pimnipa Poolvaraluck and Itthichai Poolvaraluck of Koh Samui Vipat Co Ltd, the resort’s ownership company, and Adrian Pulido, the hotel’s general manager.

Ittichai Poolvaraluck, Chief Business Officer of Koh Samui Vipat Co Ltd, speaking after the ceremony, said: “The resort will play a part in driving the economy and promoting community tourism on Koh Samui.”

As the paradise island eyes a reopening to international tourists over the coming months, the opening is a landmark on the road to recovery. Thailand’s government is ready to unveil its Samui Plus Model, which will allow fully vaccinated tourists to travel to Koh Samui without having to quarantine.

“The resort has been certified for hygiene and is certified SHA (Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration) from the Tourism Authority of Thailand,” added Mr Ittichai. “We have put in place hygiene and safety measures in the resort to prepare to welcome returning tourists.”

A collaboration between three of Thailand’s biggest hotel design names — Office of Bangkok Architecture, August Design and PLandscaping — the 140-room property occupies eight acres of private coastline in the far northeast corner of the paradise island.

Deploying a design-forward philosophy, the property, which is located in North Chaweng — and is less than ten minutes from the island’s international airport— bills itself as a “vacation gallery” due to its array of visual highlights.

These include a showpiece lobby, the longest lobby arrival point in Koh Samui, where numerous skylights allow for natural illumination by the sun and the moon. Other standout features span plush accommodations that showcase terrific ocean views to one of the largest pool zones on the island, a collection of pools, each cascading down from the main pool on the upper deck of the resort.

The beauty of Koh Samui is legendary. And the resort’s appeal leverages the visual appeal of the coastal landscape, a forest of protected trees and the proximity of the ocean. Another unique selling point is its Gallery of Eight, a collection of eight sites dotted around the property specially selected for their photogenic potential.

The 140 guestrooms, which include 24 spacious suites and villas, feature private balconies and most offer stunning sea views. Select rooms include access to Regency Club privileges, while seven beachfront pool villas provide elevated indulgence. Spaces benefit from the simplicity of the interior design—by August Design— in a neutral palette with ocean-inspired décor and blue accents.
