Who Are the World’s Most Traveled People?

1080 707 wttc2

Who Are the World’s Most Traveled People? - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, January 14, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / In November 2024, Bangkok, Thailand, hosted 250 of the world’s most traveled individuals at the Extraordinary Travel Festival—a landmark gathering for global explorers. This multi-day event featured 30 renowned speakers, vibrant networking opportunities, evening festivities, and exclusive trips. It was a celebration of discovery and connection, uniting the most passionate travelers on the planet.

We surveyed the participants and this is what we learned.  Attendees hailed from six continents, with 39% coming from North America, 35% from Europe, 16% from Asia, and the remainder from Oceania, South America, and Africa. Their living situations told a slightly different story: 38% reside in North America, 30% in Europe, 14% in Asia, and 11% are nomadic, without a permanent home. The rest are spread across Oceania, South America, and Africa.

The diversity of ages was another hallmark of the event. The youngest attendee was 22, while the oldest was 80, with an average age of 49. Age distribution showed 5% in their 20s, 21% in their 30s, 27% each in their 40s and 50s, 16% in their 60s, and 5% over 70. Gender representation was 62% male and 38% female, reflecting the broader travel community.

Unsurprisingly, these world travelers are constantly on the move, spending an average of 140 days a year traveling and taking 44 flights annually. Their dedication to exploration is unparalleled.

The festival made history by bringing together 31 individuals (the largest gathering) who have visited every country in the world—a remarkable achievement. Two of them, Harry Mitsidis and Sławek Muturi, have completed this feat twice. On average, participants have traveled to an impressive 114 United Nations countries, cementing their status as the world’s most avid, accomplished, and adventurous travelers.

2025 Dream Destinations of The World’s Most Traveled People

1080 653 wttc2

2025 Dream Destinations of The World’s Most Traveled People - TRAVELINDEXChicago, United States, January 3, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / Two hundred and fifty of the world’s most traveled people gathered for the Extraordinary Travel Festival in Bangkok.  This is a gathering of the world’s most avid, accomplished, and adventurous travelers.  In fact, a world record was set with 31 people who have been to every country in the world meeting at the ETF.  Travelers were surveyed regarding their “dream location”.  Some of these locations might surprise you and others you might never have heard of.

Here are the top 15 locations chosen by these accomplished travelers:

Antarctica 7.64%
Yemen 7.01%
Japan 5.1%
Pitcairn Island (UK) 3.82%
Papua New Guinea 3.82%
South Pole 3.18%
South Africa 3.18%
Madagascar 3.18%
Kamchatka (Russia) 2.55%
North Korea (DPRK) 2.55%
Greenland (Denmark) 2.55%
Italy 1.91%
Bouvet Island (Norway) 1.91%
Bhutan 1.91%
Argentina 1.91%

Matt McCaughey, an American who has traveled to every country in the world, chose Bouvet Island as his dream destination.  Bouvet Island is a Norwegian island located in the South Atlantic Ocean just north of the Antarctic Circle is considered the world’s most remote island.  Matt commented, “It’s about as remote as it gets, and I know very few people who have been there.  It is a total bucket list destination.”

Andy Hicks, who has traveled to over 120 countries, speaking of Pitcairn Island, “I’ve dreamed of visiting Pitcairn for years – the fact a small group of people are living in one of the most remote places on earth, nearly all of them the result of a ship muntiny (18th century HMS Bounty), is just mind-boggling to me.  Spending a few days on the island and getting to know some of the inhabitants, will surely be one of my coolest travel experiences.”

The following all garnered 1.27% of votes: Australia, British Indian Overseas Territory (UK), Brazil, Lake Louise (Canada), Costa Rica, Cuba, France, Timbuktu (Mali), Mongolia, Namibia, New Zealand, Siberia (Russia), Principality of Sealand, Syria, Thailand, Tokelau (New Zealand), Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, and Venezuela.

In this final group, each destination earned .64% of votes: Afghanistan, the Arctic, Patagonia (Argentina/Chile), Lord Howe Island (Australia), Botswana, Central Asia, Easter Island (Chile), Estonia, Faroe Islands (Denmark), Fiji, French Polynesia (France), Gaza, Greece, Hans Island (Canada/Denmark), Ladakh (India), Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Maldives, the Moon, Nepal, Nigeria, Lofoten Islands (Norway), Cook islands (New Zealand), outer space, Palau, Philippines, Portugal, the Republic of Slowjamastan, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sudan, Tonga, Palmyra Atoll (USA), USA, and Zanzibar (Tanzania).

Many would consider this to be an eclectic mix of dream destinations from the well-known to the esoteric.  The top three include Antarctica (remote and expensive to visit), Yemen (country racked by civil war since 2014), and Japan (a highly developed and touristed country).  Highly ranked and touristed destinations like France and Italy were listed.  Unstable and considered dangerous locations such as Afghanistan and Timbuktu are coveted.  Remote islands like Pitcairn Island and Bouvet Island cracked the top 15.  And some aspirational travelers have their sites on the great beyond, including outer space and the moon.  Even two micronations and self-declared countries, Principality of Sealand and Republic of Slowjamastan, earned their way on to the list.  The Sultan of Slowjamastan also appeared at the Extraordinary Travel Festival as a keynote speaker.

YouTube Star Tommy Sabbatical Surprise Speaker at The Extraordinary Travel Festival

YouTube Star Tommy Sabbatical Surprise Speaker at The Extraordinary Travel Festival - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, December 16, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The Extraordinary Travel Festival, the premier event celebrating the art and spirit of exploration, is thrilled to announce that Tommy Sabbatical, the renowned YouTuber and global adventurer, was a surprise speaker at this year’s event in Bangkok.

Sabbatical had been arrested and then detained for over two weeks in Birobidzhan located in the far east of Russia.  Sabbatical had been originally scheduled to speak at the ETF but was taken off the schedule upon his detention by the Russian government.  Sabbatical was released just days before the start of the Extraordinary Travel Festival, deported to China, and hastily made his way to Bangkok for the event.

Sabbatical took to the stage in a surprise appearance to share his story of travelling in Russia, his arrest, his detention, and eventual release.  It was a tale of caution and fear of the unknown.  Sabbatical described his arrest by the FSB (the KGB successor) as an entirely bogus and contrived stunt.

Extraordinary Travel Festival organizer, Ric Gazarian stated “not many conference organizers have to juggle a speaker line-up where there is a risk of a speaker being abruptly arrested preventing them from appearing at the event.”

You may watch Sabbatical’s overview of his false imprisonment and eventual release.

About Tommy Sabbatical
Tommy, the creator behind the wildly popular Sabbatical YouTube channel, has captivated audiences worldwide with his immersive storytelling, linguistic talent, and passion for uncovering lesser-known corners of the globe. 1080 720 wttc2

Extraordinary Travel Festival Unveils the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, December 6, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The sold-out Extraordinary Travel Festival (ETF), a one-of-a-kind gathering for adventurers, explorers, and travel enthusiasts, dazzled attendees in Bangkok with its vibrant mix of events, networking opportunities, and groundbreaking announcements and records. The festival brought together the world’s most passionate travelers, industry experts, and innovators, solidifying its reputation as a premier celebration of global exploration.

At this year’s festival was the unveiling of the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index (MTI), a revolutionary initiative set to redefine how travel achievements are measured and celebrated.  The event spotlighted the world’s top travelers, announcing the five most accomplished explorers based on the inaugural ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index rankings. These trailblazers are:

  • Michael Runkel (Germany)
  • João Paulo Peixoto (Portugal)
  • Thomas Buechler (Switzerland)
  • Harry Mitsidis (UK/Greece)
  • Pawel Krzyk (Poland)

About the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index

The ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index, named in honor of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, is designed to track and quantify the accomplishments of modern-day travelers. Magellan’s legacy as the first leader of a circumnavigation of the globe (1519–1522) resonates deeply with the ethos of today’s explorers, who continue to push the boundaries of discovery and adventure.

Key Objectives of the Index:

  • Celebrate Achievement: The MTI recognizes extraordinary travel accomplishments, fostering a sense of community and inspiration among global explorers.
  • Promote Exploration: By honoring figures like Magellan and modern adventurers, the index bridges the past and present, encouraging a spirit of curiosity and bravery.
  • Set a Global Benchmark: Created by ABS in partnership with ETF, the MTI aims to establish a universal standard for evaluating travel achievements.

A Combination of Quantitative and Qualitative Factors

The ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index is based on two main factors, each given equal weight: Quality of Travel (QL) and Quantity of Travel (QT).

Quantity of Travel (QT) is determined by how many regions a traveler has explored, based on membership in the three most important travel clubs:

  • Most Traveled People (MTP)
  • NomadMania
  • Travel Century Club (TCC)

Quality of Travel (QL) is evaluated using four key criterions:

  • UNESCO Sites: number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) visited.
  • Tentative List: number of sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List visited.
  • Capitals: number of capitals of countries and territories visited.
  • Borders: number of land or sea borders crossed.

For more information about the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index, visit www.extraordinarytravelfest.com/magellan-index/

Recognizing Modern-Day Explorers

The launch of the MTI at the ETF is a tribute to the evolving nature of travel. From reaching remote corners of the globe to engaging with diverse cultures, today’s explorers carry forward the torch of historical figures like Magellan. The five honorees embody this adventurous spirit.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index,” said Ric Gazarian. “It not only celebrates the legacies of historical explorers but also shines a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of today’s global travelers. This index is a tool to inspire and challenge adventurers around the world.”

A New Era in Travel Recognition

The ETF in Bangkok served as the perfect stage for unveiling the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index. With its focus on innovation, exploration, and community, the festival reaffirmed its role as a hub for groundbreaking travel initiatives.

Banyan Tree Koh Samui with a Pinch of Saffron - TRAVELINDEXKoh Samui, Thailand, December 4, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Saffron, a fine-dining restaurant overlooking the luxury resort of Banyan Tree Samui, has been recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide in its restaurant recommendations for 2025.

The French-based Michelin Guide, famed for its accreditation of “stars” to the most exquisite restaurants in the world, last week announced its Michelin Guide Thailand 2025 in which Saffron is listed among only a handful of dining venues on the tropical island.

Opened in 2010, Saffron hosts set evening dinners in a sophisticated and tranquil ambience, and offers a culinary journey of Thailand’s most innovative cuisine. An elegant dining establishment perched on a hillside and commanding spectacular vistas across the Gulf of Thailand, its chefs are renowned for creating combinations of flavours through a delicate blending of Thai herbs and spices.

This award-winning restaurant serves specialties such as: Khong Wang Ruam, an appetizer for two featuring freshly prepared crisp rice noodle-wrapped prawn; grilled tender chicken breast satay; fried floppy seabass rice noodle rolls; and pomelo salad with tamarind sauce; as well as Pu Nim Thod Yum Lychee Nham Sawaros, a palate-tingling dish of crispy soft-shell crab, lychee salad, mint, lemongrass, and spicy passion fruit dressing.

One of Saffron’s most recent features is a Chef’s Table evening when guests can be treated to a gueridon-style table service by one of the kitchen’s chefs who specialise in Thai and Southern Thai cuisines. The chef guides the diners through the preparation of Thai cuisine in an educational and entertaining setting, and outlines local techniques and recipes including the famed Tom Yum Koong, a traditional spicy prawn soup with condensed milk, lemongrass, mushroom and coriander.

The Chef’s Table dinners are complemented by Thailand’s own Monsoon Valley wines, which have surprised many a connoisseur in recent years with their full-bodied flavours.

“The Michelin Guide rating shows great recognition of our Saffron culinary team and their daily dedication to and love of producing excellent food,” said Director of Food & Beverage and Cuisine Rainer Roersch. “We have already seen an increase in outside customers who have become aware of Saffron through the Michelin Guide. Our aim is to satisfy each and every guest with outstanding food and exemplary service.”

Saffron’s host hotel, the 5-star Banyan Tree Samui, was among the recipients when Michelin recently announced an inaugural ranking system of “keys” to acclaim the most outstanding hotels in the world. The 2024 Michelin Guide hotel selection in Thailand included a total of eight Three-Key hotels (its highest decoration), 19 Two-Key hotels, and 31 One Key hotels. Each hotel had been anonymously visited and assessed by Michelin inspectors. Banyan Tree Samui was recognised with two “keys”.

In addition to recognition in the prestigious Michelin, Saffron has received a Best Restaurant Award four times by Tatler Magazine.

The 88-key Banyan Tree Samui is a luxury all-pool villa resort, with a pristine beach, blissful spa escapes, exquisite dining offerings, a personal concierge, and unparalleled views of the Gulf of Thailand. The 38-acre property is rich in flora and plant life, and its private beach is flanked by coral reefs.
