Orient Express to Open Luxury Hotel in Venice at Palazzo Donà Giovannelli

500 302 wttc2

Orient Express to Open Luxury Hotel in Venice at Palazzo Donà Giovannelli - TOP25HOTELS.com - TRAVELINDEXVenice, Italy, May 4, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Legendary travel brand Orient Express, part of the world-leading Accor group, has signed a partnership agreement with Italian hospitality group Arsenale S.p.A to open the second Orient Express hotel in Italy at the spectacular Palazzo Dona Giovannelli in Venice. The Groups have selected architect and interior designer Aline Asmar d’Amman and her studio Culture in Architecture to design and decorate the space.

Venice, once the gateway to Constantinople and a mythical stop on the legendary Orient Express train – that opened its doors in 1919 with the completion of the Simplon tunnel linking Switzerland to Italy – will be the home of the second Orient Express hotel, set to open in early 2024.

Located just ten minutes from Venice’s Santa Lucia train station, next to the Cannaregio shopping district, and rooted in the origins of the City of the Doges, the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli is a treasured palace built in 1400 by architect Filippo Calendario, known for Venice’s famed Doge’s Palace. Former home of the Duke of Urbino, a patron of the arts, it has been renovated twice, notably in 1800 by architect Gian Battista Meduna. At one time a pinacotheque which housed the painting La Tempesta by Giorgione, it was successively owned by the Donà and Giovannelli families.

An ode to the heritage of Venice, inspired by all of the cultures and eras that are forever a part of its history, the Orient Express Venice Hotel will be home to 45 rooms and suites, all overlooking the gardens and canals of Venice. The hotel bar will be located in the former piano nobile ballroom on the main floor of the building. A world-class restaurant will introduce guests to the flavours of Italian gastronomy. Select terraces hidden on the hotel’s rooftops will offer the most beautiful views of the wonders of the Serenissima.

As soon as the hotel opens, passengers on the Orient Express La Dolce Vita train will be able to disembark directly at the Venice Santa Lucia Station and reach the Orient Express Venice Hotel by foot or by boat.

“Orient Express Venice embodies a unique encounter between two icons: the legendary luxury brand and the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli. An architectural feat at the crossroads of cultures, a link between the East and the West, the landmark building is anchored in eternity and ready to come back to life with a theatrical and contemporary art of living, steeped in infinite elegance” says Aline Asmar d’Amman.

Born in Lebanon, Aline Asmar d’Amman, via her studio Culture in Architecture, creates projects where past and future are connected, where culture symbolizes a bridge between continents. Convinced that beauty adds to, in her words, “the poetic soul of the world”, she has designed the interior architecture of numerous private residences and has taken on the art direction of luxury hotels such as the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and emblematic restaurants such as Le Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower. She has also collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld on the making of prestigious decorations and a collection of objects and furniture in marble. Last April, she unveiled the architectural scenography of the Lebanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Art.

Accor Hotels Roars with Record Growth Across Greater China - TRAVELINDEX

Beijing, China, March 16, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Accor is advancing through 2022 with a continued focus on expanding its presence across Greater China, offering more hotels to travelers and loyalty members than ever before, from acclaimed brands such as Raffles, Fairmont, Sofitel, MGallery, Pullman, Grand Mercure, Novotel, Mercure, and ibis. Accor’s new project signings in China reached an all-time high in 2021 – leading to more than 520 hotels now in operation and an additional 350 under development. Accor is also on track to drive even greater momentum and growth success this year.

“Surpassing 500 hotels in Greater China truly is a milestone of which we are extremely proud. This achievement is a result of the powerful connection that Accor’s brands and our dynamic team members have forged over the past 35 years with owners and guests throughout this region,” said Gary Rosen, CEO, Accor Greater China. “We are really excited about our strong momentum in 2022 and beyond. On average, every five days a new Accor-branded hotel is opened in the region to meet the ever-growing demand for high-quality hospitality experiences. Accor provides one of the most diverse brand portfolios in the world, positioning us well to continue introducing more brands, more hotels, and more experiences for leisure and corporate travelers across Greater China.”

China’s emergence as an economic leader has redrawn the lines of global tourism, with China set to overtake the US as the world’s largest economy within the next decade. According to research from Euromonitor International, China is on track to become the world’s #1 global tourism destination by 2030, while continuing to be a world leader in fueling outbound tourism to other countries. Meanwhile, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has hailed China as the world’s #1 domestic tourism market. The WTTC cites China’s 62% absolute growth in domestic tourism since 2008, pushing it up the list from fourth position to the top spot today. This dovetails neatly with the China Tourism Academy’s forecast for 2022, which anticipates a return to nearly 70% of pre-Covid levels of domestic travel this year.

“China is one of the fastest-growing and most competitive economies in the world for hotel development and Accor is proud to lead this important market,” said Agnès Roquefort, Chief Development Officer, Accor. “Accor’s brand portfolio is a key differentiator for the Group and will be a driving force in our success. Close to 40% of our hotels in China are at the luxury and premium level, while we retain a stronghold in the midscale and economy segments. This puts us in an enviable position and combined with our deep local knowledge and the expertise of our regional development and commercial teams, we have a flexible and highly compelling value proposition to offer owners and developers.”

Across Greater China, Accor’s top flagship hotels are well-known and beloved by travelers, including Raffles Shenzhen, Fairmont Peace Hotel, Sofitel Legend People’s Grand Hotel Xi’an, Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich, DongFengYun Hotel Mi’Le – MGallery, Pullman Shanghai South, and Novotel Guangzhou Airport. Some of the most popular, high-profile openings of 2021 included Fairmont Sanya Haitang Bay, Sofitel Hangzhou Yingguan Hotel, Pullman Jiaxing Pinghu Excellence Hotel, Ocean Spring Resort Chengdu – MGallery, Novotel Zhengzhou Airport Hotel and Grand Mercure Pingxiang Kaiguang Hotel.

Looking ahead to the remainder of 2022, The Year of the Tiger will bring some highly-anticipated new flagship hotels to life, such as Raffles at Galaxy Macau, Fairmont Xiamen, and Sofitel Shanghai North Bund. This year will also see the grand return of the beloved landmark, Swissôtel Beijing, following three years of extensive renovations and restyling.

Accor’s newest luxury brand, Emblems Collection, will open its first hotel in the world in December 2022 – a magnificent flagship hotel, Guiyang Art Centre Hotel, Emblems Collection, in Guizhou province. The new brand has a goal to create a unique global portfolio exceeding 60 boutique hotels and luxurious resorts by 2030, which will certainly include additional properties in China.

MGallery Hotel Collection is a brand to watch – with not one, but two – hotels opening in Hong Kong this year. The Silveri Hong Kong – MGallery creates a serene retreat on Lantau Island, while AKI Hong Kong – MGallery complements the neighborhood buzz of Wan Chai with a stylish energy. Upcoming MGallery destinations include Shenzhen’s vibrant Dalang District; Wuxi Dangkou Ancient Town; as well as Guangzhou.

One of China’s top performing premium brands, Pullman, has multiple new properties slated to open in 2022, including Pullman Nanchang Xinlv, Pullman Shenzhen North Station, Pullman Chongqing Beibei, and Pullman Wuhan Airport New City. These are in addition to Pullman Dali, Pullman Haikou and Pullman Suzhou Taicang which have been open since January 2022. Greater China has more Pullman Hotels & Resorts than any other country in the world, with nearly fifty hotels in operation, a record number of new project signings, and no signs of slowing.

The power of Accor’s midscale and economy brands is also noteworthy. Novotel, a longtime favorite amongst travelers, continues to push forward with innovative new design concepts and exciting openings like Novotel Guangzhou Airport and Novotel Chengdu Tianfu Living, both set to open in 2022. Other upcoming destinations for the beloved brand include Novotel Wuxi Wanshan Lake, Novotel Xi’an Aden, and Novotel Qingdao Downtown. Not to be outdone, one of Accor’s top midscale brands, Mercure, has been singled out as one of the fastest growing brands in the world, according to a past ranking from Brand Finance. Mercure currently has more than 110 hotels in Greater China, and nearly 100 more in development. Additionally, Accor’s trailblazing economy brand, ibis, now offers more than 200 hotels in Greater China, a truly remarkable achievement.

“Accor was founded on the premise of building innovative brands and boldly expanding them throughout the world,” added Mr. Rosen. “As we progress through 2022, all of us at Accor look forward to sharing even more exciting news about our growing portfolio in Greater China and around the world, as we embrace each opportunity with the strength, confidence and adventurous spirit that the Year of the Tiger inspires.”

This underlines Accor’s sustainable growth in the Indian market and its commitment to holistic development, involving its guests, owners, and partners. In India, Accor has a wide portfolio, with ten brands across the luxury, premium, upper midscale, midscale and economy segments, and each brand has been able to create a niche for itself, among the rich base and varied needs of the Indian market.

The Novotel and ibis brands from the Accor portfolio in India have an extremely high brand recall and a strong focus on the meetings and conventions market, as well as the weddings and socials market. The Novotel network, with 21 operational hotels, forms the largest network of mid-scale hotels in the country, with hotels in key cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa and Hyderabad. “India is a diverse market with heterogenous guests, and our endeavour is to cater to our guests in all their varied personas and changing needs.”, said Mark Willis, CEO India, Middle East, Africa & Turkey. “Our Novotel and ibis brands are much preferred by guests given their value, price and ability to offer a consistent experience, with a seamless service. We will continue to expand our footprint in the upper mid-scale and economy segment in India with the Novotel and ibis brands, and also keep looking for the right partners as we expand our luxury brands after the successful response we received for Raffles Udaipur last year.”

Speaking on the occasion, Puneet Dhawan, Senior Vice President of Operations – India & South Asia, Accor said “We are excited to be entering new markets that promise vast business potential. With travelers’ confidence rebounding, and the Indian tourism sentiment demonstrating positive outcomes, staycations and workcations to both metropolitan and non-metropolitan cities are in demand. We are well positioned to address this demand and an addition of nine new hotels to our existing network would surely lead Accor to even higher levels of hospitality in the country.”

Accor currently has a focused yet differentiated brand portfolio with 54 hotels in India, and more than 10,000 keys. From a development perspective, Accor has been following a densification strategy, and enhancing expansion in key cities with multiple hotels across varying price points.

We thank Katara, one of our most valued partners, for once again entrusting us with such a unique project, which is set to become a landmark, not only in Qatar, but in the region.”

Symbolically intertwined with Qatar’s heritage, the Iconic Towers in Lusail are an architectural translation of Qatar’s national seal, representing the traditional scimitar swords. Raising gracefully from the podium level, the arched towers will host a luxurious five-star hotel with 361 rooms and suites to cater to discerning business travellers, a lavish six-star hotel with 132 suites to meet the needs of those seeking sophisticated luxury accommodation and 49 branded apartments to become home to permanent residents. State-of-the-art entertainment and recreational facilities, including specialist boutiques, VIP movie theatres, signature restaurants and a private Cigar Lounge are to be complemented by exquisite banqueting and conference spaces, as well as office dedicated areas.

“We believe Qatar to be an ideal place to spend a few days in the Middle East: there is a rich variety of beaches, it features year round sunshine, and the food is equal to the best the region has to offer” said Mr. Andrew Humphries, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Katara Hospitality. We are happy to collaborate again with Accor to open the first Raffles and Fairmont properties in Qatar, which we believe will position Qatar as a leading luxury, lifestyle and conference destination locally and globally”.

“This is a unique opportunity to consolidate Fairmont and Raffles image in the Middle East, with both hotels sitting in on of the most iconic building of the region, indeed an incredible showcase for both brands”, said Mark Willis, CEO of Accor India, Middle East, Africa and Turkey.

Mark Willis adds: “We expect that these properties, with their iconic design and unrivalled presence, will become an architectural emblem and reference in Luxury in Doha”.

Accor currently operates six properties (1,378 keys) in Qatar across five brands including Movenpick, Mondrian and MGallery, with nine additional hotels (2,920 keys) in the pipeline.

Raffles Confirms Acting General Manager in Cambodia

Raffles Confirms Acting General Manager in Cambodia - TRAVELINDEXPhnom Penh, Cambodia, January 25, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Dennis de Groot stands at the helm of the two most storied hotels in the country. Raffles Hotels & Resorts has confirmed the appointment of Mr Dennis de Groot as Acting General Manager of both Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh and its sister hotel Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap.

With more than 15 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, de Groot previously held hotel management positions in the Maldives, Azerbaijan and South Africa, including nearly three years at a private game lodge.

De Groot was recruited by the Accor Group in 2016 to oversee the rebranding of the Jumeirah Dhevanafushi as it transformed into the Raffles Maldives Meradhoo.

He moved to Cambodia in 2018 as Hotel Manager at Raffles Hotel Le Royal and was originally appointed Acting General Manager in January 2021. Under his tenure, the hotel has undergone a meticulous one-year restoration project when each of the 175 rooms and suites at the historical property received a full refurbishment.

The novation walked a fine line between the need to brighten interiors and integrate a host of mod-cons and the imperative to preserve the heart and soul of the vintage hotel. The hardwood floors have been polished to a squeak, the age-old ceiling fans still whirl, and the old brass rotary telephones continue to ring.

The courtyard remains the centerpiece of the property, its two swimming pools surrounded by tropical gardens of frangipani, and shaded by giant century-old trees.

Similarly, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor has undergone a restorative transformation in the past two years. This classic resort was originally built in the 1920s as a luxurious resting stop en route to the newly discovered ruins of Angkor Wat.

The new-look properties come at a time when Cambodia is reopening its borders to quarantine-free international arrivals. The country has been widely praised for its handling of the pandemic and its efficient vaccine program.

“Looking ahead, the challenges are clear, not only for Le Royal and Grand Hotel d’Angkor but for the hospitality sector in general,” said de Groot. “However, we have in these ‘Grandes Dames of Southeast Asia’ two much-loved national landmarks where guests expect not just a luxury experience but also a step back into yesteryear.”
