MARKET REPORT: Stuffing your stocking at Germany’s Christkindlmarkts

1080 494 wttc2

When the winter gets tough in central Europe the tough get… festive, as age-old Christmas markets spring up across the region to help cast a warm glow over the snow. Among the most famous are markets in Germany, where most of the historic Weihnachtsmarkt/ Christkindlmarkts are now in full swing (most starting in mid to late November and continuing until just before Christmas and in some cases a few days after).

Both locals and visitors from around the world flock to the sites, many simply content to stroll through the atmospheric alleys with festively decorated stalls.

But beyond sparkling trees and twinkling lights, fragrant mulled wine and wonderful wurst (sausages), rows of traditional market stalls offer an endless opportunity to help fill Christmas stockings back home or find keepsakes that can provide memories to last a lifetime.

Here’s a look at some fabulous items to buy that are so delightful even Kris Kringle would be impressed:

CRAFTS

Christmas toys

Traditional crafts, toys, and ornaments make ideal gifts and keepsakes. Typically made from carved wood – notably the legion of colourful nutcracker figures – exquisite items include nativity scenes, decorative candles and candle holders, glassworks, Christmas pyramids, angels, unique Christmas cards (some hand-painted), paper stars, advent calendars, porcelain figurines, music boxes (glockenspiel), incense smokers, sheepskin slippers and boots, leather goods, anything that can be made from honey (from soaps to carved candles), and plenty more. Many items are unique to the region in which they are found (such as Nuremburg prune people or the hand-crafted wooden toys of the Ore Mountains), and channel traditions that have been faithfully preserved for generations.

GLUHWEIN MUGS

While Christmas shoppers may by necessity have to enjoy a warm cup of spiced Gluhwein (or the non-alcoholic version kinderpunsch) on the spot, rather than taking it home, many markets sell the specially designed ceramic mugs for later use (or allow patrons to keep the mug the mulled wine was served in for a small fee). Offered in a variety of designs (and shapes, such as a boot) they often have commemorative logos marking the time and place they were purchased. (Consider filling them with candies and or chocolates for a Christmas twist).

TRADITIONAL TREATS

Cakes, cookies, and chocolates, oh my: German Christmas markets are bursting with seasonal confections, ranging from ubiquitous gingerbread, which comes in many shapes and sizes – (hanging) hearts, houses, and gingerbread people – to all manner of bakes goods, such as sweet powdered vanilla croissants, and, of course, the famous stollen or klaben fruit loafs, or Christmas cakes – the latter made with yeast dough, sultanas, and almonds, and flavoured with cardamom. Dresden’s Christmas stollen is baked according to a special recipe since the 15th century.

And don’t forget, there’s marzipan (Lübeck’s is particularly delicious), hot roasted chestnuts, toffee apples, chocolates/candies, hot chocolate, jams, spreads, spices, local liquor/liqueurs, and too many regional delights to list.

There are nearly 3,000 Christmas market in Germany; to unwrap all the possibilities, click HERE.

Hyatt Strengthens Luxury Portfolio with 35+ Planned Hotels and Resorts to Open Through 2025 in Highly Sought-After Destinations Across the Globe.

Driven by care for today’s luxury traveler and their wellbeing priorities, Hyatt elevates its leadership position with an intentional growth strategy across its luxury Timeless, Boundless, Independent, and Inclusive Collection brands

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) shared today Hyatt’s strong development pipeline of more than 35 planned luxury hotels and resorts globally through 2025 across the Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Miraval, Alila, Andaz, Thompson Hotels, and The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brands, as well as Inclusive Collection brands Zoëtry Wellness & Spa Resorts and Dreams Resorts & Spas.

While maintaining its asset-light approach, Hyatt has doubled the number of luxury rooms, tripled the number of resort rooms, and quadrupled the number of lifestyle rooms in only five years. With 70% of its rooms categorized as luxury and upper upscale, the Hyatt portfolio has grown to meet increased demands for luxury and resort accommodations while upholding consistent, top-tier quality, personalized experiences, and bespoke service.

At large, travel and tourism are expected to increase by approximately 12% of global GDP by 2033 according to a recent World Travel & Tourism Council report. In turn, Hyatt’s luxury portfolio is expanding to meet that demand in new international markets. This includes the debut of Park Hyatt hotels in the UK, Mexico, and Malaysia; the Thompson Hotel brand’s expansion in Europe with the first properties in Austria and Italy; the Andaz brand’s growth in the Americas with its first hotel in the Caribbean; The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand’s first properties in the Nordics and India; as well as Hyatt luxury growth in the trending destination of Portugal, with the planned openings of Andaz Lisbon and Dreams Madeira Resort, Spa & Marina.

“The upcoming addition of these new hotels and resorts across our global luxury portfolio in sought-after destinations where travelers want to go most reinforces our leadership in this space,” said Mark Vondrasek, Chief Commercial Officer, Hyatt. “Our continued, purposeful growth in the year ahead will follow an insight-led approach, focused on listening to our guests, customers and World of Hyatt members and their evolving travel needs such as a growing desire for immersive and distinct experiences that prioritize wellbeing.”

A recent Ipsos report found that across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, common factors driving the travel decision-making process are availability of wellbeing offerings (approximately 30% on average) and the opportunity for new experiences (approximately 31% on average). Additionally, through listening to what matters most to guests and members, Hyatt understands that affluent, worldly travelers are seeking luxury hotels that value the purpose of their stay and proactively plan around their needs. In turn, Hyatt luxury hotels take special care in developing one-of-a-kind experiences and excursions curated personally for each guest, including the awe-inspiring, experiential wellbeing programming that they value the most. Notable holistic wellbeing offerings include:

  • A continued commitment to sleep – from a new program across all Hyatt hotels in New Zealand and Australia to a new, comprehensive Sleep Therapy program, teaching guests the art of slumber, at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets.
  • New adventurous experiences focused on showcasing the potential for transformative travel through the Andaz “Be Like No One’s Watching” campaign, coming to life through culinary and mixology masterclasses, musical immersions, onsite tattoo studios and more.
  • Preference for privatization (as a form of “self-care”) is driving villa stays at hotels like Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, Alila Villas Uluwatu, The Cape, A Thompson Hotel, and Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, which participate in Hyatt’s award-winning exclusive travel advisor program, Hyatt Privé.
  • Specialized and immersive spas coming in 2024 at Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo del Sol and Park Hyatt Marrakech that will act as wellness destinations, driving preference amongst Gen Z and Millennials travelers of which more than half would go out of their way to ensure a hotel has a spa, accordingly to Amex 2023 Global Travel Trends report.
  • More options through the recently launched Wellbeing Collective, a collection of 30+ Hyatt properties around the globe that offer tailored wellbeing experiences to meet the specific needs of meetings and events travelers, with plans to expand in 2024.

World of Hyatt recently unveiled reimagined program benefits for members, including newly expanded World of Hyatt Milestone Rewards designed to offer more awards and more choice at more milestones, allowing members to choose earning points for future free nights, enhancing stays with suite upgrades As part of this evolution, eligible travel advisors will be offered new pathways to earn status and milestones and are invited to extend care even further with the ability to gift new and exciting Milestone Rewards as well as Globalist status to clients or colleagues.

Hyatt also continues to grow thoughtfully through acquisitions, expanding its portfolio for guests and members with the recently announced acquisition of Mr & Mrs Smith. The integration planned for the near future will unlock direct booking access to hundreds more boutique and luxury hotels including in 20+ countries where there are currently no Hyatt hotels.

“Hyatt’s luxury growth strategy is purposefully ambitious and in the coming years, we will continue to grow with intent through a focus on key leisure destinations, and top-tier brands’ ability to personalize experiences for each guest, member and client, through care,” added Heidi Kunkel, Senior Vice President Commercial Services, EAME. “We value our relationship with travel advisors and look to work together on finding new ways to advance care for them and their clients through the transformative growth of our luxury offerings and evolving World of Hyatt benefits.”

A picturesque panorama of surf, sand, and sunshine, where Caribbean culture and captivating history come together, Nassau Paradise Island is the perfect place to reinvigorate the spirit and reconnect with family, friends, and loved ones. And the Bahamas island is connected to Canada with convenient, non-stop flights, meaning less time travelling and more time enjoying the white-sand beaches, warm coastal waters, and welcoming resort communities.

Of course, when it comes to making the most of a Bahamian getaway, a little insider knowledge goes a long way. So, with that in mind, here’s a few of our favourite island experiences, from local beaches and dining spots to unforgettable tours and exclusive offers:

Warm turquoise waters, powdery white sands, abundant, year-round sunshine – nothing feels more quintessentially Bahamian than a day at the beach. On the hunt for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path beach experience? Nearby Caves Beach may be just the ticket. Located less than a 10-minute drive from iconic Cable Beach, this secluded spot somehow feels worlds away from its bustling counterpart. Named for the spectacular limestone rock formations that line the beach’s edge, Caves Beach is a favourite destination among locals, who flock here to take advantage of calm coastal waters, soft white sands, incredible snorkelling and spelunking, and quiet, laid-back vibe.

After an afternoon hang, stick around as the vibes change pace to an energetic atmosphere, and bop along to the tunes with your crew by your side.

As mentioned James Bond earlier, why not stop by the martini bar and lounge at The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort; it’s where 2006’s Casino Royale was filmed. Looking for something a little more hoppy with hints of piracy? Pirate Republic Brewing Company is The Bahamas’ only craft brewery, located in downtown Nassau. Take a tour of the new brewery located in a 125-year-old warehouse during the day, and chill with a flight of unique brews in the evening.

End your evening with an out-of-this-world experience at Moon Bar at Atlantis Paradise Island. Share a nightcap in this sleek and modern space, featuring a massive jellyfish tank that spans the width of the bar and appears to defy gravity.

One final suggestion

Keep an eye open for our Calendar of Events to stay up-to-date on everything that’s going on in Nassau Paradise Island – including evening events, festivals, shows, and nighttime pop-ups.

Hotel Sustainability Banyan Tree Samui Goes Platinum

900 675 wttc2

Hotel Sustainability Banyan Tree Samui Goes Platinum - TRAVELNEWSHUB.comKoh Samui, Thailand, December 4, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Banyan Tree Samui has become the first and only hotel in Thailand to be accorded Platinum Certification by EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking organisation for sustainable tourism.

The award of EarthCheck’s Platinum Certification marks 10 years of continuous excellence by the resort in 10 key performance areas: Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Energy Efficiency; Management of Freshwater Resources; Ecosystem Conservation & Management; Social & Cultural Management; Land Use Planning & Management; Air Quality Protection; Wastewater Management; Solid Waste Management; and Environmentally Harmful Substances.

Although other hotel chains have received similar accolades from EarthCheck at a group level, Banyan Tree Samui stands alone as the sole resort or hotel to be recognised with Platinum Certification at a single-property level.

“Banyan Tree Samui’s achievement in receiving the EarthCheck Platinum Certification is a landmark moment in sustainable tourism in Thailand,” said EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore. “This certification reflects not just a decade of commitment to environmental stewardship, but also a dedication to social responsibility and economic sustainability.”

Sustainability Efforts

Banyan Tree Samui said it strives to reduce consumption rates through improved efficiency and adopting new technology or practices. Energy, carbon emissions, water use, and waste production are closely monitored, measuring progress against context-specific industry baselines and best practices, established in collaboration with EarthCheck.

Led by a marine biologist, the resort’s Sustainability team offers guests “green” activities such as a nature trail with bird-spotting, guided snorkelling tours to the resort’s very own coral reef, and the opportunity to join an on-site tree-planting activity.

Guests may also opt to join a plethora of cultural activities including Thai cookery classes, Thai boxing, Thai language lessons or a visit to an elephant sanctuary.

“Caring for the environment is in our DNA,” said Ms.Thepsuda Loyjiw, the resort’s Sustainability Manager. “Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We see sustainability in terms of not only the environment, but also the local communities in which we operate.”

Banyan Tree Samui recently funded the rebuilding of a local school that had been destroyed by a tropical storm, and Thepsuda, joined by several volunteers from the hotel, rolled up their sleeves to help by working on landscaping and other labour-intensive tasks. Reconstruction at the Wat Santi Wanaram Child Development Centre was completed in January 2023, providing 103 children and their teachers a safe environment for lunch, activities and play.

Other initiatives implemented successfully by Banyan Tree Samui in recent years include a blood drive campaign, and the ongoing “Seedlings Mentorship” project aimed at nurturing young Samui students between 12 and 18, providing them with vocational and life skills and education, as well as offering scholarships and financial support to enable select students to continue into higher education.

In October 2023, Banyan Tree Samui organised a recycling scheme with its coffee provider Nespresso. “We return all the capsules with the coffee grains still inside,” said Thepsuda. “Nespresso then separates the aluminium for recycling and the ground coffee to be used as compost or fertiliser.”

Award-Winning Resorts

Following in the footsteps of its elder sister resort, Banyan Tree Krabi, which opened in 2020 on the Andaman coast, is also looking at achieving recognition by EarthCheck as an eco-torchbearer in Thailand, following its latest onsite audit in September 2023.

Both Banyan Tree resorts were recognised in the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards this year, with Banyan Tree Krabi voted No 4 in the Top Resorts in Thailand category, and Banyan Tree Samui claiming the No 5 title.

Opened in 2010, the 88-key Banyan Tree Samui is a luxury all-pool villa resort, with a pristine beach, blissful spa escapes, exquisite dining offerings, locally-infused experiences, a personal Villa Host concierge, and unparalleled views. The 38-acre property is rich in flora and plant life, and its private beach is flanked by coral reefs.

The resort hosts three restaurants, a spa with Banyan Tree’s signature Rainforest hydrotherapy facility, a fitness centre, a kids’ club, a meetings and events centre, and a library. Beachfront activities available to guests include paddle boarding, snorkelling, kayaking, table tennis, a pool table, and yoga classes.

Villas at Banyan Tree Samui, each with a private infinity pool, start from US$585 per night.
