TROUBLES ANNIVERSARY CASTS LIGHT ON NORTHERN IRELAND

600 274 wttc2

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement (April 10, 1998), which ended the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. With this in mind, Tourism Ireland has produced a top 10 list designed to help visitors delve into the region’s fascinating if tumultuous history while at the same time discovering its regenerated present.

Across Northern Ireland there are reminders of its troubled past – captured on street walls, in museum exhibitions and in visitor attractions. Through them, visitors can delve into Northern Ireland’s story and begin to understand the complex history that manifested itself during a destructive 30-year period from 1968 to ’98 that pitted protestant unionists who wanted to stay part of the United Kingdom and Catholic separatists who want to join Ireland.

Here is the tourist board’s curated top 10 list, mixing past and present, and which is guaranteed to demonstrate how much things have changed in just 25 years:

1. Take a Black Taxi Tour

One of the best ways to see and learn about the history of Belfast is on a Black Taxi Tour. These tours are guided by people who lived through the Troubles and offer a unique insight into the city’s past. The tour stops at Belfast’s famous political murals that portray loyalty and faith, solidarity, revolution, but also violence, death, and grief. It also visits the city’s most prominent Peace Walls.

2. The Troubles and Beyond exhibition

Belfast’s award-winning museum is located in the beautiful Botanic Gardens and has a permanent exhibition that tells the history of Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the present day. It covers not only Northern Ireland ’s political history but also its social, cultural, and economic history.

3. Museum Deep Dive

For those who want a deeper dive, the Linen Hall Library has a unique collection of over 350,000 items relating to the Northern Ireland Troubles. The historic city centre building dates to 1788 and has links to the United Irishmen movement of the 18th century.

4. Tour Parliament Buildings

The seat of Northern Ireland’s devolved Assembly is an imposing building made of white Portland Stone set atop a hill. Free tours of the building describe the details of its grand architecture and take visitors into the ornate Great Hall and the two chambers – the Senate and the Assembly. The tour also reveals intriguing details about the political history that has unfolded in the building.

5. Visit Crumlin Road Gaol

Crumlin Road GaolBelfast’s evocative prison (photo) has a history that stretches back to 1845. It was in use until 1996 but is now a top visitor attraction. A guided tour will take visitors through 150 years of history, exploring the building’s enthralling past and gaining a unique insight into the daily lives of prisoners and prison officers. A separate wing of the building is currently being developed into a whiskey distillery and visitor experience.

6. Discover Hillsborough Castle & Gardens

Hillsborough Castle is Northern Ireland’s royal residence and has been the location for countless political meetings. To mark the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, special Politics Tours of the building (21–23 April) will explore its role in the peace negotiations. Drawing on recent interviews conducted with politicians, diplomats and those who were present at the talks, the tours will give an insight into what went on behind the scenes.

7. Relax in the Europa Hotel

Once famous as the world’s most bombed hotel, the Europa now stands as a symbol of peace and renaissance in Belfast. With its elegant piano lounge and fine dining, the four-star, city-centre hotel is popular with locals and visitors alike. It has welcomed many world-famous names, including US president Bill Clinton, who stayed there in 1995 when he took part in the peace talks. A great place for an indulgent afternoon tea or cocktail.

8. Explore the Museum of Free Derry

Telling the story of what happened in Derry-Londonderry from 1968 to 1972 (the Free Derry period) through the eyes of the community, the Museum of Free Derry features key events in Northern Ireland’s history. These include the civil rights marches, the Battle of the Bogside, internment, Bloody Sunday, and a notorious British Army operation called Operation Motorman.

Close to the museum is the famous wall announcing, “You are now entering Free Derry” – now a popular place to grab a selfie.

9. Get to know Derry-Londonderry’s famous sons and daughters

Visit the city’s historic Guildhall Building to see the Nobel Peace Prize that Derry man John Hume won for his role in Northern Ireland’s peace process. It’s on display alongside his other awards – the Martin Luther King Jr. Non-Violent Prize and the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize.

Derry-Londonderry’s most famous daughters are probably the Derry Girls (including the “wee English fella”). The TV sitcom phenomenon was a window into life in the city in the years running up to the Good Friday Agreement. A new exhibition about the program is planned for the Tower Museum, together with a new Derry Girls Trail, which will include a visit to the must-see mural.

10. Cross the Peace Bridge

Walk or cycle across the Peace Bridge, an elegant piece of architecture that joins Ebrington Square with the rest of Derry-Londonderry’s centre. The bridge is designed with two identical halves, each suspended from a single, inclined steel pylon, which overlaps at the centre of the river to form a ‘structural handshake.’ The design is a metaphor for reconciliation and hope and draws on the sculpture “Hands Across the Divide” by Maurice Harron which is nearby.

ROUND-UP: April 3-10, 2023

600 275 wttc2

A new agreement between Canada and the UAE last week promised more flights between the destinations; Canada Jetlines refocussed attention on sun routes; El Al delivered “not the best news” to Canadian agents, and a TD survey revealed Canadian habits when it comes to travel insurance.

NEWS

Canada and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced the conclusion of an expanded air transport agreement that allows 21 flights per week for each country – 50% more flights than the maximum number previously possible. The new rights under the expanded agreement are available for use by airlines immediately. Currently Air Canada, Emirates and Etihad serve the market directly.

As part of a new brand identity, NYC & Company, New York’s official destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau is now known as New York City Tourism + Conventions. The destination’s new brand system is aimed at travellers from around the world and includes a new brand strategy and comprehensive visual identity system comprising a new logo, color standards, typography, art direction and graphic elements.

BORDERS

The Aruba Tourism Authority has announced the implementation of seamless travel to Aruba through the use of verifiable digital credential technology (DTC). The innovation will soon allow travellers to fulfill government immigration requirements before boarding their flight using a simplified process that eliminates the need to manually enter information from paper travel documents. Using a DTC, passengers can consent to share any of their relevant data directly from their digital wallet on their mobile device to multiple entities across journeys, from the government at the port of entry to other touchpoints such as hotels or car rental.

BY THE NUMBERS

A TD Insurance survey says the majority of Canadians (65%) plan on taking a trip in the near future, but only 36% of those planning to travel intend to purchase both medical and cancellation travel insurance. Among those likely to travel in the next year, younger Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 appear least likely to purchase travel insurance with only 27% saying they intend to buy cancellation and travel medical coverage, compared to 39% of those over the age of 35.

AIR

Canada Jetlines has pressed pause on its domestic routes as the airline refocuses its efforts on sun destinations and leasing its planes, but says it plans to resume in-country flights come fall. The carrier quietly halted its twice-weekly return trips between Toronto and Vancouver and Toronto and Calgary in January after launching commercial operations in September. The carrier continues to offer two return flights per week from Toronto’s Pearson airport to Las Vegas and to Cancun, Mexico. Meanwhile, the carrier says it has signed a letter of intent for its third Airbus A320 aircraft, to be provided by a global aviation lessor with delivery expected by July.

Porter Airlines is adding flight frequency on its new Ottawa-Charlottetown route. Service begins on May 17, but the initial seven weekly round trip flights increase to 11 times weekly during the spring and fall, plus 14 flights per week during the peak summer travel season.

El Al Israel Airlines would like to return to Canada, but there is “no date circled on the calendar” for that to happen, the carrier’s Sr. VP Sales for North America, Marc Cavaliere told an audience of travel agents at the Israeli Consulate in Toronto, and that though he was delivering “not the best news” he would not “perpetuate unrealistic expectations” out of respect. He added that the carrier will continue to work in Canada and is promoting connections through its US gateways. El Al mothballed its Canadian service last October.

The trail features a pair of modern signatures (the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte and Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord) along with museums and legacy tracks, including Hillsborough’s Occoneechee Speedway, Rockingham Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway, a NASCAR original located in the “moonshine capital of the world.” Special exhibits will illuminate moonshine history from the mountains to the coast and highlight the connection between bootleggers running from revenue agents and stock car drivers on speedway tracks.

2023 is a year of anniversaries in San Francisco. The city is celebrating 150 years of cable cars traversing its steep hills, the 125th anniversary of the Ferry Building, the 90th season of SF Ballet, and the 60th anniversary of Alcatraz prison closing, with festivities planned to commemorate the milestones.

IATA Focus Africa to Strengthen Aviation Contribution to African Development

IATA Focus Africa to Strengthen Aviation Contribution to African Development - TRAVELINDEX - AIRLINEHUB.comGeneva, Switzerland, April 7, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is launching “Focus Africa” to strengthen aviation’s contribution to Africa’s economic and social development and improve connectivity, safety and reliability for passengers and shippers. This initiative will align private and public stakeholders to deliver measurable progress in six areas.

“Africa accounts for 18% of the global population, but just 2.1% of air transport activities (combined cargo and passenger). Closing that gap, so that Africa can benefit from the connectivity, jobs and growth that aviation enables, is what Focus Africa is all about,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Infrastructure constraints, high costs, lack of connectivity, regulatory impediments, slow adoption of global standards and skills shortages affect the customer experience and are all contributory factors to African airlines’ viability and sustainability. The continent’s carriers suffered cumulative losses of $3.5 billion for 2020-2022. Moreover, IATA estimates further losses of $213 million in 2023.

Delivering on Africa’s Opportunities

Sustainably connecting the African continent internally and to global markets with air transport is critical for bringing people together and creating economic and social development opportunities. It will also support the realization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) for Africa of lifting 50 million people out of poverty by 2030. In particular, trade and tourism rely on aviation and have immense unrealized potential to create jobs, alleviate poverty, and generate prosperity across the continent.

Africa has a solid foundation to support the case for improving aviation’s contribution to its development. Pre-COVID aviation supported 7.7 million jobs and $63 billion in economic activity in Africa. Projections are for demand to triple over the next two decades.

“Africa stands out as the region with the greatest potential and opportunity for aviation. The Focus Africa initiative renews IATA’s commitment to supporting aviation on the continent. As the incoming Chair of the IATA Board of Governors, and the first from Africa since 1993, I look forward to ensuring that this initiative gets off to a great start and delivers benefits that are measurable,” said Yvonne Makolo, CEO of RwandAir and first female Chair of the IATA Board of Governors (2023-2024).

Six Critical Areas

“The limiting factors on Africa’s aviation sector are fixable. The potential for growth is clear. And the economic boost that a more successful African aviation sector will deliver has been witnessed in many economies already. With Focus Africa, stakeholders are uniting to deliver on six critical focus areas that will make a positive difference. We’ll measure success and will need to hold each other accountable for the results,” said Walsh.

The six focus areas are:

Safety: Improve operational safety through a data driven, collaborative program to reduce safety incidents and accidents, in the air and on the ground.

Infrastructure: Facilitate the growth of efficient, secure, and cost-effective aviation infrastructure to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Connectivity: Promote the liberalization of intra-African market access through the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).

Finance and Distribution: Accelerate the implementation of secure, effective and cost-efficient financial services and adoption of modern retailing standards.

Sustainability: Assist Africa’s air transport industry to achieve the “Net Zero by 2050” emissions targets agreed to by industry and the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) member states.

Future Skills: Promote aviation-related career paths and ensure a steady supply of diverse and suitably skilled talent to meet the industry’s future needs.

The Power of Partnerships

“Partnerships will differentiate the outcome of Focus Africa from previous efforts to stimulate Africa’s development with air transport. By partnering, stakeholders will effectively pool their resources, research, expertise, time and funding to support the common goals of the six work areas,” said Kamil Al Awadhi, IATA Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East.

The partners will be announced and join forces in Addis Ababa on 20-21 June to officially launch the Focus Africa initiative with more details for each task area.

The Timing is Right

Africa continues the path to recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. Air cargo is 31.4% over 2019 levels and air travel is 93% of 2019 levels. Full recovery for air travel is expected in 2024.

“The tasks for Focus Africa are not new. Work is already underway as part of the work of IATA and other stakeholders in Africa. But after the financial trauma that the pandemic brought to African aviation, we are at a unique time of rebuilding. By launching Focus Africa now, we can ensure that the recovery from COVID-19 moves aviation to an even better place than we were in 2019,” said Al Awadhi.

JW Marriott Makes its Debut in Luxury Safari Segment - TRAVELINDEX - VISITKENYA.comMasai Mara, Kenya, April 7, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Transformative Experiences and Meaningful Connections Await at JW Marriott’s Haven of Luxury in the Heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. JW Marriott announced the opening of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, marking the company’s highly anticipated debut in the luxury safari segment.

Sitting within the Masai Mara National Reserve in Southwestern Kenya, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife and wilderness conservation regions, the lodge is a sophisticated and thoughtful sanctuary from which to discover nature and breathtaking vistas in harmony. Exhilarating guided game drives offer guests the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to, including lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinoceros, and elephants. Between June and September, the reserve is host to the annual great wildebeest migration, which sees more than 10 million animals travel a distance of 1,800 miles from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania.

“Fostering meaningful connections and nourishing the soul is at the heart of the JW Marriott brand, so entering the luxury safari segment is a natural next step,” said Bruce Rohr, Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott. “Offering our guests once-in-a-lifetime experiences and a deep connection to place, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge balances the thrill of a game drive with thoughtful opportunities to switch off and take it all in. We are excited to welcome travellers to a transformative and wellness-forward stay delivered with JW Marriott’s legacy of extraordinary hospitality.”

Inspired Design

The lodge’s elegant interiors, designed by Kristina Zanic Consultants, seamlessly blend the savannah inwards, drawing inspiration from the elements with soft, warm tones, natural materials and textures, and native colours thread through its design. Each of the lodge’s 20 private tents provide a peaceful sanctuary to recharge and reset, and feature terraces overlooking the River Talek, a water source and habitat for many wildlife. The tented honeymoon suite offers a private plunge pool, while two interconnecting king and twin suites are ideal for families with children over the age of six (the minimum age of guests at the lodge).

Wellbeing and Mindful Practices

In keeping with JW Marriott’s ethos of mindfulness, the lodge is home to a number of thoughtfully designed spaces from the cosy Adventure Lounge full of books to get lost in and a space for young adults to take time for themselves, to the Cultural Deck where guests can gather around the fire pit to share tales of the day’s exploration.

Capturing the essence of rejuvenation, the Spa by JW emulates the serenity of the reserve and offers tailored experiences and signature treatments which blend locally inspired techniques and therapies. These are complemented by natural and organic products by renowned African skincare brand, Healing Earth, also available as in-room amenities. Guests can enjoy spa treatments from the comfort of their tented suite, accompanied by the sounds of the wilderness. Extending beyond body to mind and spirit with guided yoga, treatments include a ‘Masai Celebration’ incorporating local botanicals and therapies.

Nourishing Culinary Journeys

At the heart of the camp is the JW Garden, an outdoor space for guests to spend time discovering home-grown, organic ingredients, including the lodge’s signature rosemary. The garden’s produce is used by the lodge’s chefs to craft personalised dishes, cocktails, and mocktails. The garden will host daily programming, including live cooking, interactive cocktail mixology, and chef-led talks for a true farm-to-table experience. A relaxing gathering place, Fig Tree Lounge offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains from the indoor and outdoor bar and serves refreshing cocktails and mocktails infused with seasonal ingredients from the lodge’s garden. An indoor and alfresco dining experience at Sarabi Restaurant takes guests on a nourishing epicurean experience guided by JW Garden ingredients and local culinary heritage. Guests can venture out into the reserve with the lodge’s guides to enjoy a freshly prepared ‘Bush Breakfast’ or dinner while sipping sundowners and soaking in the breathtaking savannah vistas.

Connection to the Locale

The lodge’s community programming provides an authentic insight into meaningful local projects, including The Maa Trust, an organisation empowering local people by promoting small business start-ups. The lodge donates a percentage of the nightly rate per person to the organisation and provides a space for craftspeople to retail Maa Beadwork and produce. Guests can visit The Maa Trust to meet with local artisans and forge a deeper connection to the people in the area.

Currently, 60 percent of the lodge’s team are locals, with plans to reach 70 percent, ensuring the hotel’s contribution to the socio-economic development of the region. As an ongoing initiative, JW Marriott Masai Mara’s Apprenticeship Programme invites young women from the community to diversify their skills and broaden their experience to kick-start their careers in the hospitality industry. Partnership with the community began during the early development process of the lodge. Developed on land committed to a tourism project so as not to unduly disturb the surrounding environment, much of the construction was undertaken by local experts overseen by technical specialists, with build materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. The lodge has rehabilitated access roads to the property, installed power to the area, and provided access to clean drinking water for locals through a water treatment plant.

Emphasis on waste reduction and recycling is integral to daily operations. The lodge’s water treatment plant provides recycled and sanitised water; food waste is placed at the lodge’s compost site; and water wells are dotted around the lodge for animals to quench their thirst throughout the day.

By supporting local organisations such as The Mara Elephant Project and The Mara Protector Conservation Programme, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge contributes to protecting animals and their habitat across the greater Mara ecosystem. Bringing a passion for the surrounding wildlife and nature to guests, the lodge’s Head Guide is a lifelong conservationist who holds talks about local culture at the lodge as well as guided walking tours. With an abundance of meaningful moments to experience at the lodge, guests can delve into photography and learn new skills at the lodge’s very own studio.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a 30-minute drive from Keekorok Airstrip and a 25-minute drive from Sekenani Main Gate.
