Emirates Sir Tim Clark to Discuss Rapid Aviation Growth in Middle East

700 425 wttc2

Emirates Sir Tim Clark to Discuss Rapid Aviation Growth in Middle East - TRAVELINDEX - AIRLINEHUB.comDubai, United Arab Emirates, March 15, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, will participate in an in-depth discussion on the Global Stage of Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023, which will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from 1-4 May. In conversation with John Strickland, Director of JLS Consulting, Sir Tim will reflect on Emirates’ long-term strategy as it begins to ramp up aircraft deliveries from 2024 while balancing growth and tackling broader issues like climate change.

The news comes amid reports of significant gains across the Middle East’s aviation sector, which saw year-on-year traffic almost double in January 2023 according to figures released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This growth is especially evident in the UAE where Dubai International Airport (DXB) catered to more than 66 million passengers in 2022, a 127% rise compared to the previous year.

Over the longer term, analysts from Mordor Intelligence predict that the Middle East’s aviation market will record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 6% during the period 2022-27, meaning regional passenger numbers are likely to continue to rise for the foreseeable future.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “It’s encouraging to see that air traffic in the Middle East is once again beginning to soar, especially following such a turbulent period during and after the global pandemic.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Sir Tim to our Global Stage for the 30th edition of ATM,” Curtis added. “Emirates has firmly established itself as an innovative trailblazer within the global aviation industry, so I cannot wait to hear how Sir Tim and his colleagues are working to build a futureproofed and sustainable airline sector.”

The leading role that Gulf airlines are playing in the decarbonisation of the aviation industry will represent a key focus during the upcoming edition of ATM. Earlier this year, Emirates announced that one of its Boeing 777-300ERs had successfully completed a demonstration flight powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Etihad Airways, meanwhile, has teamed up with carbon-net-zero solutions specialist, World Energy, as part of a long-term strategic partnership that will result in dramatic emissions reductions.

The 30th edition of ATM will feature in-depth sessions dedicated to air travel on day two. Following the conclusion of Emirates Returns to Growth: President of Emirates Airline in Discussion with John Strickland, experts from Boeing, Etihad and SimpliFlying will assemble on ATM’s Global Stage to discuss The Net-Zero Future of the Aviation Industry. A broad range of regional carriers will also be participating in ATM 2023 in addition to Emirates and Etihad, including flydubai, flynas, Saudia Airlines, Saudi Amad for Airport Services and Air Transport, and Cham Wings Airlines.

ATM 2023 is anticipating a 7.5% year-on-year uptick in both participation and exhibition space occupied by the aviation sector, building on the excellent levels of engagement witnessed during last year’s show. On a broader level, the conference will explore the future of sustainable travel in line with its theme of ‘Working Towards Net Zero’. Having officially initiated its journey to net zero, the conference programme will explore how innovative sustainable travel trends are likely to evolve, allowing delegates to identify growth strategies within key vertical sectors, while providing a platform for regional experts to explore a sustainable future ahead of COP28, which will take place in November 2023 at Expo City Dubai.

The conference will also feature a sustainability category at its annual exhibitor awards for the first time. Exhibiting organisations will be recognised based on the extent to which they have considered the environmental impact of their stands, as well as their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.

ATM 2023 is held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre and its strategic partners include Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) as the Destination Partner, Emirates as the Official Airline Partner, IHG Hotels & Resorts as the Official Hotel Partner and Al Rais Travel as the Official DMC Partner.

LISTENING IN: Irish eyes smiling at Great Big Sea-Chieftains jam

480 360 wttc2

Remember the you-got-chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter, you-got-peanut-butter-on-my-chocolate debate? And what’s that got to do with music videos and today’s musical celebration of St. Patrick’s Day?

It’s like this: Canada’s great Great Big Sea is like the chocolate, and Irish icons The Chieftains the peanut butter (or vice versa if you prefer) – individually awesome, and even better together.

GBS is Newfoundland’s biggest band ever, helping bring the island’s sea shanty tradition and general Celtic vibe to a wider audience in Canada, while The Chieftains have been popularizing Irish folk music within and beyond the Emerald Isle’s borders since 1962, not least through high-profile collaborations with the likes of Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, and many others.

Here Paddy Maloney and his Chieftains mates meet Alan Doyle and the boys for a collaboration on the GBS traditional favourite “Lukey” in a 1998 video.

The gathering is emblematic of the Irish – and Newfy – experience: lively, infectious, and fun. Which is to say, two bands tailormade for the pub, together and seemingly having the time of their lives.

And that is why we love Ireland, Newfoundland, and Celtic music – and, of course, metaphorically speaking, chocolate in our peanut butter.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Lyrics

Well oh, Lukey’s boat is painted green,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey’s boat is painted green,
The prettiest boat that you’ve ever seen,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well oh, Lukey’s boat’s got a fine fore cuddy,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey’s boat’s got a fine fore cuddy,
And every seam is chinked with putty,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well I says “Lukey the blinds are down”
Ha, me boys!
I says “Lukey the blinds are down”
“Me wife is dead and she’s underground”
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day

Well I says Lukey “I don’t care”
Ha, me boys!
I says Lukey “I don’t care”
“I’ll get me another in the spring of the year”
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Oh, Lukey’s rolling out his grub,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey’s rolling out his grub,
One split pea, and a ten pound tub,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well, Lukey’s boat’s got high-topped sails,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey’s boat’s got high-topped sails
The sheet was planted with copper nails,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Lukey’s boat is painted green,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey’s boat is painted green,
It’s the prettiest boat that you’ve ever seen,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

The resort joins a strong pipeline of 16 committed projects across the country, and will become the first resort-style property for MGallery in the Philippines.

Scheduled to open its doors in 2024, the 188-key South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol – MGallery will be nestled within 6.4-hectare of expansive grounds, surrounded by palm trees and overlooking the powder-soft sands of Panglao’s South coast. Throughout their stay in this tropical paradise, travellers will be able to soak up the stunning scenery and explore the island’s cultural charms and natural wonders, including snorkelling and scuba diving in the turquoise seas.

When guests are not exploring the island or neighbouring Bohol, they will be able to dine at a choice of four restaurants, cool off in the swimming pool, grab refreshments at the pool bar, work out in a well-equipped fitness centre, or enjoy soothing therapies at the spa. South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol – MGallery is being developed by Alturas Group of Companies (AGC) with support from Bill Barnett, Managing Director of Asian hospitality consultancy C9 Hotelworks. AGC is a family-run business with a deep emotional connection to Bohol and Panglao. The resort will weave the timeless tales of family and folklore into every aspect of the guest experience. Using a pioneering ‘adaptive reuse’ design approach, the project will embrace the history of the destination by reusing materials from village dwellings in every room. These materials include wooden walls and objects that tell the story of local artisans. This inspiring concept is perfectly aligned with the values of MGallery, Accor’s one-of-a-kind global collection of hotels where captivating stories are lived and shared.

“South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol – MGallery is an exceptional resort that adds another outstanding destination to our expanding presence in Southeast Asia, joining our flourishing collection of memorable hotels and resorts full of character and charm. Panglao is an island paradise that promises the perfect blend of soft, sandy beaches, sparkling seas and rich cultural heritage, encouraging more globally-minded travelers to experience its pleasures, and connecting them to the delights of the local neighborhoods. The opening of Bohol-Panglao International Airport in 2018 has allowed this exotic island to usher in an exciting new era of travel and tourism, and we are delighted to be at the forefront of this trend. We look forward to working with our partners at AGC to bring this exciting, locally inspired project to life,” said Maud Bailly, CEO of Sofitel, Sofitel Legend, MGallery and Emblems.

South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol – MGallery will be surrounded by extensive leisure and MICE facilities courtesy of Panglao Shores, AGC’s brand-new lifestyle destination that will feature a retail mall, residential and hotels, night market, live performance areas, restaurants, bars and gardens. Developed from the ground up with sustainability as its guiding light and in consultation with local artisans, vendors, farmers and fishing communities, the future-forward development is designed to benefit the island for many generations to come.

“AGC is a family company that was born in Bohol and cares deeply about this destination. By coming together with Accor, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, we are proud to enhance the quality of hospitality on the island by blending world-class facilities and international standards with the genuine local charm and authentic cultural heritage of Bohol, which is based on shared community values. In combination with Panglao Shores, our destination-defining lifestyle development, we hope to build a bright future for the people of Panglao,” commented Hope Uy, Managing Director of Panglao Shores.

South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol – MGallery is located less than 10 minutes’ drive from Bohol-Panglao International Airport, which offers direct flights to and from Manila and other cities in the Philippines, with the potential for international flights in future.

Accor is the leading international hotel operator in the Philippines with ten hotels, resorts and branded residences currently operating and a committed pipeline of 16 hotels scheduled to open within the next five years. UNWTO Best Tourism Villages to be Celebrated in Alula - TRAVELINDEXAlUla, Saudi Arabia, March 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / UNWTO will celebrate tourism as a major factor of sustainable rural development at a special Best Tourism Villages ceremony to be held in AlUla, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (12-13 March).

Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO (BTV) is the flagship initiative of the Organization’s wider work to advance tourism as a pillar of rural development and opportunity. Since 2021, BTV has produced an annual list of destinations which stand out for their commitment to sustainability in all its aspects – economic, social and environmental – and the preservation and promotion of community-based values. The ceremony will bring together Ministers of Tourism alongside representatives of the most recent villages recognized by UNWTO, including AlUla Old Town District itself.

Tourism is a leading pillar of growth and opportunity for villages, supporting rural businesses, providing jobs for local communities, and celebrating traditions and heritage

“It is a great honour that AlUla is among this year’s award recipients. We look forward to continuing to raise awareness about the transformative role of tourism through our support for meaningful initiatives such as this,” said H.H. Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan Al- Saud, Minister of Culture of Saudi Arabia, Member of Board of Directors, and the Governor of the Royal Commission for AlUla.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Tourism is a leading pillar of growth and opportunity for villages, supporting rural businesses, providing jobs for local communities, and celebrating traditions and heritage. Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO recognises those destinations that are showing what tourism can offer, both for tourists as well as for the communities themselves.”

“We are delighted to host the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages 2022 Ceremony in Saudi Arabia this year. We look forward to sharing the rich history and heritage of the Kingdom with event attendees and participants,” said H.E. Ahmed Al Khateeb, Minister of Tourism, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Pimalai Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability at Laanta Lanta Festival

Pimalai Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability at Laanta Lanta Festival - TRAVELINDEX - VISITTHAILAND.netKoh Lanta, Thailand, March 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Vibrant annual event showcases the diverse culture and nature in this southern Thai paradise, including a creative contest to make artistic sculptures from recycled waste. Pimalai Resort & Spa, the five-star sanctuary on the southern Thai island of Koh Lanta, has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the island’s culture and environment by joining forces with the local government and community to be part of the 18th Laanta Lanta Festival 2023, a vibrant annual festival designed to showcase the island’s rich multicultural and natural heritage.

Nestled in the Andaman Sea, just off the coast of southern Thailand’s Krabi province, Koh Lanta is a diverse society comprising Muslims, Thai Buddhists, Chinese Thais and the Chao Ley people, who live their lives on the sea. Together, they have lived and worked in harmony for over 122 years, while also protecting the island’s abundance of natural resources – including lush green forests, colourful underwater ecosystems and native wildlife – for future generations.

Celebrating this rich diversity, the Laanta Lanta Festival ran from 3-5 March 2023 and featured a wide range of activities and events related to the conservation of the island. This year’s festival was opened by Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism & Sports, together with local government officials in a major ceremony at the courtyard in front of the Ko Lanta Community Museum.

One of the highlights of this year’s event was a sculpture contest that challenged the island’s schoolchildren and residents to create artworks made from recycled waste, including trash that had washed up on Koh Lanta’s beaches. Based on the theme of indigenous land and sea creatures, this initiative saw imaginative sculptures created from plastic bottles, beverage cans, sandals, food boxes and other debris which would otherwise have been left in nature where it could pose a severe danger to wildlife, such as sea turtles. This activity not only helped to clear trash from the island; it also raised awareness about pollution and the need for effective waste management among students, islanders, tourists and business operators.

The Laanta Lanta Festival was organised in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and B. Grimm, a group of companies that specialise in energy, health and educating young people about ecological challenges, along with officials, private organisations and the people of Koh Lanta.

Pimalai has been a long-term supporter and partner of the festival, which reflects its deep commitment to environmental conservation and social integration. Ever since this five-star resort opened its doors 21 years ago, it has worked on regular projects with authorities to help preserve Koh Lanta. For example, In November 2022, Pimalai came together with the government of Krabi province, Koh Lanta district, the Royal Thai Navy and local businesses to release 50 sea turtles and tens of millions of blue crabs into the sea at the resort’s beach. Next month, from 19-22 April 2023, Pimalai will team up with the Thai government’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife & Plant Conservation once again to undertake the latest coral restoration project at Koh Haa. Many more initiatives planned are being planning in the future, as Pimalai works tirelessly to secure a sustainable future for Koh Lanta.

Blissfully serene and secluded, Koh Lanta is a unique destination that feels very different from southern Thailand’s busier tourist islands. By highlighting the unique strengths of a multicultural community and pristine environment to Thai and international tourists, Pimalai is playing an active role in positioning the island as a world-leading sustainable tourism destination.
