Montara’s Dutch Chef Duo Shoot Phuket into Eco-Dining Elite

Montara's Dutch Chef Duo Shoot Phuket into Eco-Dining Elite - TOP25Restaurants.com - TRAVELINDEXPhuket, Thailand, February 27, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Dutch chefs Jimmy Ophorst and Rick Dingen are setting new standards for sustainable fine dining on Phuket via Michelin-starred culinary skills and both restaurants were recognized and highly ranked in the TOP25 Restaurants Phuket 2022.

The two combine flair and finesse when it comes to taking eco-conscious dining to the next level on the Thai paradise island.

Ophorst runs the show at PRU, the signature dining venue at Trisara, one of Phuket’s most exclusive resorts. Dingen, meanwhile, oversees the kitchen at JAMPA, which follows a philosophy of “local ingredients, live fire, and zero waste cuisine” at Tri Vananda, a US$182 million wellness community taking shape in the verdant forests of northern Phuket.

The pair share nationality and a desire to promote a seasonal, sustainable food ecosystem. Both were recognized at the Michelin Guide Thailand Star Revelation 2023 at the end of last year, with PRU retaining its 1 Michelin Star and Michelin Green Star; and Jampa earning a Michelin Green Star for its zero-waste, plant-based food.

“Sustainability is the heart of our business,” says Ophorst who, at PRU, steers the only venue in Phuket with a Michelin star. “It’s integral to our restaurants and our lives.”

Both Trisara and Tri Vananda are owned by Montara Hospitality Group, a firm that has earned a reputation for prioritising sustainability at Trisara and through its 16,000 sqm Pru Jampa organic farm, located within the Tri Vananda boundaries.

And the two chefs are united by a shared eco-friendly philosophy that promotes a balanced food ecosystem without compromising creativity.

At PRU, Thai ingredients are shaped into bewitching gourmet creations that draw inspiration from both the east and west. The venue’s name — an acronym for Plant. Raise. Understand. — provides a solid clue as to its overriding philosophy. Ingredients are 100% sourced from within Thailand, with much of the organic produce grown at the Pru Jampa farm.

“There’s a huge interest among the public in dining experiences that support local communities and showcase amazing Thai produce,” he said. “I look forward to furthering our commitment to sustainable cooking and sourcing and delighting guests through innovation.”

Over at Tri Vananda, Jampa innovates by using live fire to transform local ingredients — many of which, just like at PRU, are sourced from the Pru Jampa organic farm — into healthy and balanced, yet resolutely elevated, culinary creations.

“I aim to showcase locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in the best way possible,” says Dingen, whose hyper-local, plant-focused, zero-waste cuisine is marking him out as a rising star in Thailand.

Dingen is known for his commitment to zero waste and he aims to make Jampa the first venue in Phuket to achieve a zero-waste-to-landfill ratio.

“We want to exert the absolute minimal impact upon the earth and our aim is to break down our kitchen waste to ensure nothing goes to landfill,” he said.

The success of the two restaurants is in line with the aims of Montara Hospitality’s “Dine Good, Do Good” concept, which it has rolled out across all its F&B outlets.

Arabian Travel Market Dubai with Huge Increase in Exhibitors from India

700 468 wttc2

Arabian Travel Market Dubai with Huge Increase in Exhibitors from India - TRAVELINDEXDubai, United Arab Emirates, February 26, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Thanks to a significant uptick in annual outbound journeys predicted over the next two years, the Indian tourism sector will represent a key focus during Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023, which will return to Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for its 30th edition from 1-4 May.

According to recently released data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Indian nationals spent a record $10 billion in overseas travel during the first nine months of 2022, an increase of nearly 43% compared to pre-Covid figures.

Moreover, estimates from Indian business consultants, Nangia Anderson LLP, in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), place the number of annual outbound journeys at more than 27 million, with a total value of over $42 billion by the year 2024. This makes India well-positioned to become one of the world’s most important outbound tourism markets and support growth in the Middle East’s tourism sector following the challenges of the global pandemic.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “The levels of outbound travellers predicted from India in the coming years mean it can command serious attention within the travel, tourism and hospitality sector. At ATM 2023, we will give delegates, exhibitors and attendees the opportunity to explore the Indian travel sector through various show features, including the India Summit, which will look deeper into this key market.”

Many Indians regularly travel to the GCC region for leisure, business, or a combination of both, taking advantage of the short distance, with Mumbai to Dubai, just a three-hour flight. The number of direct flights between India and this region reflects these trends, with Emirates alone operating over 170 weekly flights to nine Indian cities – Gulf Air, Etihad, Qatar Airways and Oman Air each also have regular flights to Indian destinations.

Airfares to the Gulf from India are also far lower than for other destinations due to the short distance, further underscoring the convenience and popularity of leisure or business travel. In addition, there are 8.5 million Indian nationals currently working in the GCC, meaning there is already a significant level of familiarity between the two regions.

Last year’s Arabian Travel Market (ATM) hosted several high-profile exhibitors from India, including Goa Tourism and Uttar Pradesh Tourism. This year’s event will be no exception, with new Indian exhibitors such as One Above Destination Management Services (DMC), Adventure Overland and Visaero Visa already confirmed.

ATM 2023 will explore the future of sustainable travel in line with its theme of ‘Working Towards Net Zero’. Having officially initiated its journey to net zero, the conference programme will explore how innovative sustainable travel trends will likely evolve. It will enable delegates to identify growth strategies within key vertical sectors while providing a platform for regional experts to explore a sustainable future ahead of COP28, which will take place in November 2023 at Expo City Dubai.

The conference will also feature a sustainability category at its annual exhibitor awards for the first time. Exhibiting organisations will be recognised based on the extent to which they have considered the environmental impact of their stands and their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.

ATM 2023 is held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre, and its strategic partners include Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) as the Destination Partner, Emirates as the Official Airline Partner, IHG Hotels & Resorts as the Official Hotel Partner and Al Rais Travel as the Official DMC Partner.

HAVING A BALL IN RUGBY: British town celebrates sporting milestone

600 202 wttc2

Ahead of this year’s World Cup of Rugby this Fall, rugby fans around the world are also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the sport’s birth this year. And interest and activities are most notable in British town of Rugby at the West Midlands school where it is said to have all begun.

The aptly named Rugby School, which gave its name to the sport, is expecting close to 40,000 visitors as its hosts a number of events and exhibitions throughout the year, all marking the day that William Webb Ellis first “took the ball in his arms and ran with it” on “The Close” (field) at the school in 1823.

Prior to this date the sport, then known as football, was played much like Australian rules football is today, until Webb Ellis demonstrated a “fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time” leading to the impromptu invention of the new sport of rugby.

Among the year’s activities, Rugby School will be welcoming teams from a range of backgrounds and abilities to play on The Close, as well as hosting dinners, evenings, and its staging its annual arts Festival On The Close (June 26-29), which will be named “With a Fine Disregard,” in honour of Webb Ellis.

Meanwhile, on April 23, the school will be attempting the World’s Largest uncontested rugby scrum on its hallowed pitch. The current world record is 2,586 people, a record the school hopes to surpass with 3,000 participants.

Exhibition

Of longer duration, the Ruby School Museum is hosting an exhibition, running through Dec. 9, welcoming visitors to discover the birthplace of rugby at the school. The visual and audible exhibition will feature photographs, memorabilia, video footage, and interviews with previous members of Rugby School’s XV, illustrating how the game has developed over the years.

The exhibition is open on event days or by prior booking.

Another exhibition – “He Ran With It” – takes place at the Lewis Gallery (through April) and at the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum (Sept.-Oct.).

Visitors to the town can also follow its “Pathway of Fame,” which celebrates the history of the game and commemorates some of its most notable players and events.

National Aviation Day was observed on Feb. 23, with Canada’s minister of transport marking the anniversary of Canada’s first powered flight in 1909 when pilot J.A.D. McCurdy flew the Silver Dart nearly 800 metres in Baddeck, NS. “This first flight over 100 years ago,” said Omar Alghabra, “paved the way for today’s dedicated aviation and commercial pilots to connect people and move goods safely and quickly across our country and around the world.”

Feb. 24 marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prompting the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to mark the “sad” anniversary of the occasion and urge ongoing solidarity from the tourism industry for the Ukrainian people.

Atout France was on the road last week, conducting its annual Destination France events for close to 350 agents, including events in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary (which rotates with Quebec biannually), and Vancouver. On average, close to two dozen suppliers took, including sponsor Air Canada, and a nearly dozen-strong supplier delegation from the Occitanie region of southern France, which will receive new Air Canada flights from Montreal into Toulouse starting in June.

Vietnam Golf Coast Eyes a Huge Year as Golf Tourism Destination

Vietnam Golf Coast Eyes a Huge Year as Golf Tourism Destination - TOP25GOLFCOURSES.com - WORLDGOLFDIRECTORY.comDanang, Vietnam, February 24, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Blue-chip tournaments and events allied to an expanded course portfolio and a renewed thirst for golf travel will see Central Vietnam cement its status as one of Asia’s must-visit golf destinations in 2023.

That’s the view from the Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) — a freshly rebooted destination marketing organization that links the region’s best signature golf layouts.

“Asia’s top golf destination is not just recovering following the pandemic: it’s getting even better,” said Gary Dixon, general manager at Ba Na Hills Golf Club, one of the driving forces in the VGC.

Clubs in the region — regarded as a leading golf hub, not just in Vietnam, but in Asia overall — are reporting brisk business as golf travel returns with a vengeance.

This resurgence is also reflected via several major golf events slated for 2023. These include the Asia Grand Final of the Faldo Series — the only global amateur series for boys and girls — which will play out over the Sir Nick Faldo Signature Design at Laguna Golf Lang Co in April.

Central Vietnam will also roll out the welcome mat for the global golf industry as Danang, its largest city, hosts the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) and Asian Development Tour (ADT) over the course of the year.

On course, the buzz about Central Vietnam’s layouts has grown almost as loud as the motorbike horns that soundtrack daily life in Danang.

Layouts such as Laguna Golf Lang Co, a Sir Nick Faldo Signature Design, and Ba Na Hills Golf Club, laid out by British former Ryder Cup star Luke Donald over rolling foothills, are ranked among Asia’s best courses. Other highlights, meanwhile, include courses designed by luminaries including Greg Norman, Colin Montgomerie, Robert Trent Jones Jr., and Jack Nicklaus.

“Many golfers won’t have been in Central Vietnam since 2019,” said Adam Calver, Director of Golf & Destination Marketing at Laguna Lang Co. “We already had five great championship courses here at that time. Now, with the addition of two additional courses (laid out by Trent Jones Jr. and Nicklaus) we have seven.”

With high-quality golf combined with incredible beaches and luxury resorts like the award winning properties at Laguna Lang Co — Banyan Tree Lang Co and Angsana Lang Co — Central Vietnam is arguably Vietnam’s hub for golf tourism. It offers a range of attractions, including the heritage sites in history-steeped Hoi An and the Golden Bridge at Sun World Ba Na Hills: a 150-metre-long pedestrian bridge that is one of Asia’s most photographed landmarks.

Its myriad attributes are complemented by world-class infrastructure that includes Danang International Airport, which links Danang with direct flights to destinations including Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, India and Singapore.

But for golfers, the evolving play options is the area’s most compelling drawcard.

Highlights include Laguna Golf Lang Co where a championship course threads between trees, over rice paddies and streams, through rock features and alongside the pounding surf. Designed by British former world number one Donald (it is his first effort as an architect), Ba Na Hills is laid out over rolling foothills, and features natural elevation changes, ravines, streams, and spectacular mountain backdrops.

“Demand is surging once again,” added Dixon. “Before, I would have said that anyone serious about golf travel should be coming to Vietnam at least once in their life. With world-class courses opening all the time, I would revise that to say that you’d need to return every few years to do the place justice.”
