GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING AT CORVETTE MUSEUM

600 275 wttc2

There’s a museum for almost everything it seems, so it’s of little surprise that automobile aficionados can get their hearts racing at a Kentucky venue dedicated to North America’s first sports car, the Corvette.

Located in Bowling Green, the state’s third largest city, the museum traces the post World War II development of the American sports car, culminating in the introduction of the Corvette in 1953.

The attraction is situated roadside off the I-65 making for an easy stop for visitors heading to or through Nashville, about an hour south, and complements the vehicle’s assembly plant. (It is the only place in the world Corvettes are made).

Indeed, a key feature of the museum is its “nursery,” where new owners can come to pick up their vehicle, to applause from watching visitors. Available at a price, the service includes day-long instruction on optimum use for vehicles that range in cost from US$60,000 for a base model to $100,000 for Z06 that can do zero to 60 mph in 26 seconds. A video feed allows friends and family to watch the ceremony.

For others, there are still plenty of cool cars to see, with approximately 70 sparkling vehicles showcased in appropriate period settings.

Vintage ‘vettes

Among them are classic and rare cars in mint condition, including the millionth Corvette ever made and the only 1983 model in existence (the other 42 were purposely destroyed – the story why is told by guides).

An exhibit also details the shocking 2014 sinkhole that suddenly appeared during the night in the central section of the museum and costing eight classic cars their lives.

A guided tour (11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily) is the best way to experience the museum and learn some of the intriguing stories behind the vehicles, but self-guided visits are also possible. Several interactive exhibits exist, including a drive simulator and a simulation of the sinkhole cave-in.

Patrons can also drive a Z06 Corvette on an adjacent racetrack (appointments are necessary, previous experience is not) at a cost of $299 for about 30 minutes. Or drivers can take their own vehicle on the track for $125. And there’s also a Go Kart track with both adults and kids karts.

Of course, there’s also an expansive Corvette store, where a giclée print of a Corvette will set you back 100 bucks. Then again, that and the museum may be as close as most people get to the real thing.

PUBS, PATIOS & BARS: The Beatles Bar Varadero, yeah, yeah, yeah

600 275 wttc2

In the land of Fidel and Che, a venue based on the memory of John, Paul, George, and Ringo certainly comes as a surprise. Nevertheless, The Beatles Bar Varadero is one of the Cuban beach resort’s most popular hangouts, drawing crowds nightly for live music and mojitos under the stars – or more accurately, under leafy trees on a patio.

Located at Calle 59, guests are welcomed by a sculpture/requisite photo op of the Fab 4 and the small interior bar is plastered with paraphernalia recalling the band’s career, garnished with shout-outs ensure the bar’s primary patrons (Canadians) feel at home – such as Canada and Quebec flags, and a Toronto Raptors banner.

But it’s outside on the patio where guests settle in, in front of a small stage that boasts nightly cover bands that invariably span the classic rock scale from ACDC to ZZ Top, prompting singalongs, dancing, and occasional spontaneous arm waving.

On a recent visit, the band did belt out “Hey, Jude,” but otherwise did not actually play any other Beatles songs.

Three bands rotate throughout the week, taking the stage nightly at 9 and playing non-stop till midnight (Mondays excepted). The venue opens at 1 p.m.

Like all visitors, our group, which was in town for Swoop’s inaugural flight to Varadero earlier this month, was limited to drinks in the rum family – mojitos, rum punch, and rum & cola – which cost $2.50 a pop. Notably, there was no wine or beer, the latter which, like in most Cuban bars, comes and goes according to availability.

(A general insider’s tip in Cuba: “If there are people on the patio, it means they have beer!”).

As for the Beatles Bar, lack of beer on the night notwithstanding, and despite a few vocal Internet reviews suggesting otherwise, the place was a blast. Just ask those among the throng of nightly patrons, or the ones queuing to get in.

Without a doubt, we loved it, yeah, yeah, yeah!

The TTA marketplace and TTA Forum augment a wide-ranging programme with networking events and convention sessions for trade visitors and exhibitors.

Four years ago the Technology, Tours & Activities (TTA) segment was the first of its kind in Europe to successfully debut at ITB Berlin. In 2019 already, exhibitors, trade visitors, speakers and several hundred participants were able to build contacts, exchange experiences and discuss forward-looking topics surrounding one of the fastest-growing markets of the travel industry. From 7 to 9 March at ITB Berlin 2023, the TTA segment will again gather the relevant players of the tourism industry.

Inside the display area in Hall 4.1, the TTA segment is the main platform for three of the tourism industry’s most important markets, which all have one goal: to promote and sell in-destination services. The TTA marketplace at ITB is an important meeting place for tour managers, operators, technology specialists, travel destinations and agencies. This is where trade visitors will find startups as well as established companies exhibiting their products.

eTravel Track – TTA Forum focuses on trends, discussions and innovations

At the ITB Berlin Convention at the TTA Forum of the eTravel track, informative sessions on Tours & Activities featuring the latest survey findings, trends, numerous insights and discussions await trade visitors. Industry experts will provide first-hand information on specialist topics. Ahead of Wednesday’s TTA Forum, on Tuesday, 7 March 2023 on the Orange Stage in Hall 7.1, Johannes Reck, CEO of GetYourGuide, and Douglas Quinby, co-founder and CEO of Arival, will kick off themed events.

Charlotte Lamp Davies of A Bright Approach, the moderator at the TTA Forum, said: “I am really delighted to be able to moderate a live TTA Forum again. In 2019, when the event was launched, we witnessed one of the busiest days at ITB Berlin. The industry is desperately awaiting its return. We have prepared a wide-ranging programme and look forward to live participation from the audience. The afternoon session will provide insights and specific tips for travel and tour operators.”

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 8 March 2023, industry experts will take a look at the future and discuss changing consumer behaviour, sustainability, corporate partnerships and the use of new technologies. The ITB Berlin Convention slogan ’Mastering transformation’ is particularly relevant to the Tours & Activities industry. Recent events and profound challenges have changed consumer behaviour, the focus and booking patterns in this sector.

At several interactive sessions on the ITB eTravel Stage in Hall 6.1, TTA specialists will have information on the latest trends, look to the future and offer practical tips. Douglas Quinby, co-founder and CEO of Arival and moderator of a C-Suite panel hosted by TourRadar, Tiqets and Viator, will highlight how adjusting to new technologies has changed consumer behaviour. Travel Curious, Hyatt, G Adventures and Planeterra will present case studies illustrating successful partnerships. Layered Reality will demonstrate the potential AR has for the industry and explain how this technology can augment traditional tour products.

ITB Berlin in partnership with Arival and Bookingkit

ITB Berlin, Arival and Bookingkit have established a closed partnership that extends beyond activities at ITB Berlin 2023. Over the coming weeks the two companies will host some fascinating events for the TTA community: at a conference, Arival 360 | Berlin will provide the setting for travel and adventure tour operators to network and engage with other companies, distributors and prospective partners. Exclusive research findings will also be available, highlighting the most important industry trends. Experiences Connect 2023, a free event hosted by Bookingkit, will take place on 2 February online from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional information is available at online event: Experiences Connect 2023. ITB Berlin is also a partner of this event.

The joint plans will see the two organizations work together to develop a set of comprehensive tourism investment guidelines. The guidelines will be focused on five countries, namely Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama and El Salvador in the Latin American region, as well as and Barbados in the Caribbean region.

With this new partnership agreement, UNWTO and CAF will work together to boost investment into the sector and to target it towards projects and initiatives that will make the biggest difference

From a warm welcome that cascades into conversation, to freshly baked treats that have guests sneaking seconds into their pockets, no two hotels or stays will be the same.

A Host with Passion

Handwritten Collection offers a variety of hotels that are so distinct, it’s as if each local hotelier were inviting guests into their charming and stylish homes. The guest experience at Handwritten Collection brings to life the spirit of the host: their tastes, their passions and the little quirks of their personality. Each local hotelier provides a charming presence that weaves their character and personality into the fabric of their hotel, engaging guests with local wisdom and delightful conversation, bringing a personalized energy to the guest experience.

“The manner in which each host interacts with their guests is thoughtfully considered and brings to life their own personal passions,” added Caroline Bénard, Global SVP Economy & Midscale Brands, Accor. “Whether in a social setting or the privacy of a guest’s room, there will be moments of storytelling and engagement that create a genuine connection. This rapport between host and guest contributes to a more meaningful and memorable stay experience.’

Designed for Independent Hoteliers

The Handwritten Collection is also designed with the needs of independent hotel owners in mind. With a current conversion rate of 80%, the bulk of properties joining Handwritten Collection will be conversion projects rather than new builds, requiring a simpler transition and ramp up process and a more sustainable growth and development model. The brand’s standards are designed to be flexible, light, and easy to attain. Moreover, Handwritten Collection provides direct ROI and the opportunity for owners to maximize revenue with immediate access to the power and reach of Accor’s sales, distribution and loyalty platforms, while also benefiting from the Group’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) capabilities.

“In 2022, Accor signed on average globally more than one hotel per day and opened nearly one hotel per day. We aim to continue this growth by anticipating the needs of our guests and aligning with the investment criteria of our partners and owners. Independent hotels are increasingly seeking the strength of Accor’s powerful sales, distribution and loyalty platform to increase their revenue and assist them in optimizing their costs, whilst retaining their own distinctive personality and offering a highly qualitative product, service and experience. Handwritten Collection offers them an ideal solution, providing the option for a franchise contract and a flexible and cost-effective level of investment. We look forward to working collaboratively with owners and partners and welcoming additional hotels from around the world into this outstanding collection. With over 110 properties and 11,500 rooms in negotiation to become part of Handwritten Collection, including 12 hotels committed already, we aim to have over 250 properties by 2030.” said Camil Yazbeck, Global Chief Development Officer, Premium, Midscale, Economy, Accor.

Do you have clients heading to Sandals Emerald Bay soon?   Do they want to explore this incredible part of the world?  Keep reading for some “Exuma Must Do’s” and be sure to recommend these unforgettable experiences, guaranteed to make their vacation that much more memorable!

Spend the day at Stocking Island

Do your clients want to spend the day on an island that is only accessible by boat? Stocking Island is a small, long, narrow island located just one mile from the port of George Town, Great Exuma.  Easily reachable by boat from Elizabeth Harbour, Stocking Island is home to some of the finest, private white sand beaches in The Bahamas, perfect for snorkelers and divers to explore the island’s blue holes, coral gardens and undersea caves. The island is also home to Stromatolites, said to be the oldest known macro-fossils on the planet, found on the Atlantic-side beaches.  With lots of space to explore and roam, Stocking Island is perfect for a day of adventure, especially with the breathtaking cliffside ocean views.   There’s just one high hill, known locally as the Beacon, which is capped with an old, unused gas beacon with its missing glass top portion but the concrete pillar that is visible for miles.  The central part of Stocking Island features an inlet, known as Hurricane Hole, where sailboats seek protection during storms and features a blue hole.  Opposite to Hurricane Hole is a sandbar beach called the Spit, home to a popular local bar and restaurant called “Chat and Chill” – that’s accessible only by boat.  Sounds like the perfect place to spend an afternoon!

Relax at Tropic of Cancer Beach

Also known as Pelican Beach, Tropic of Cancer Beach is a serene crescent of white-powder sand bordering the translucent water along the coast of Little Exuma. The longest beach on the island, it is also the prettiest in the Exuma chain and more than likely, your clients will probably have it all to themselves! Located at 23 26N 75 35W, the beach is named after the meridian line that defines the northern extent of the tropics and crosses right through it.   With no infrastructure or amenities on this pristine piece of paradise, it’s a good idea for your clients to pack their own food and drinks during this heavenly experience. After all, visitors come from all over the world to bathe and sun here, one of Exuma’s well kept secrets…

Meet the iguanas at Bitter Guana Cay

A whole island full of Bahamian Rock Iguanas?   Dozens of native iguanas can be found on Bitter Guana Cay in the Exumas.  An endangered and protected species, these colourful creatures can live up to 40 years!    The reptiles are probably as close to dinosaurs as can be found in the present day. In fact, parts of the movie “Jurassic Park III: The Lost World” was filmed right here on Bitter Guana Cay.  The iguanas are harmless and on most days, can been seen simply soaking up the sunshine….or the attention of visitors to their little island.

Swim with nurse sharks at Compass Cay

Swimming with sharks isn’t for everyone…..but…..it’s one of those exhilarating experiences that won’t be soon forgotten for those brave enough to do it.  Compass Cay in the Exumas is the go-to-spot for those willing to swim with nurse sharks, which are slow-moving bottom feeders and are mostly harmless to humans.  Even so, it’s always important to exercise caution when swimming with them……and listen to the expert instructions from the local guides.

Meet Exuma’s World-Famous Swimming Pigs

If there’s one Exuma Must-Do for your clients…..this is it.    The world-famous swimming pigs are often at the top of the list for any visit to the Exuma Cays.  This is one experience that your clients simply can’t miss while they are here. Yes, there are other islands in the Bahamas where guests can see swimming pigs….but only Exuma is where you can find the “original swimming pigs” on Big Major Cay (Pig Island).   Wondering about how the pig got to Pig Beach in the first place?  It’s not really known.  Big Major Cay is uninhabited and the pigs are not native to the island.  Some say they were left by a bunch of sailors who planned to come back and cook them for dinner.  Or that the pigs swam over from a nearby shipwreck.   In either case, there are now about 20 pigs and piglets living the “easy life” with daily visits (and food) from local Bahamians and tourists alike.     How famous are the pigs?  They even have their own Instagram account and official hashtag!

Outrigger Fiji and Castaway Island First South Pacific Resorts with Green Seal Certification

Outrigger Fiji and Castaway Island First South Pacific Resorts with Green Seal Certification - TRAVELINDEXFiji, South Pacific, January 25, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Recognised for their resilience in promoting sustainable and responsible practices, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Castaway Island, Fiji are the first resorts in the South Pacific to be awarded Green Seal certification. Issued by global non-profit organisation Green Seal, the certification ensures that a product or service meets a set of rigorous performance, health, and environmental criteria.

Awarded in December, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is the first resort in the South Pacific to gain the certification. With its long-term commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, the resort has implemented green purchasing policies; addressed energy and water efficiency and the safe storage of hazardous chemicals; and incorporated practices that reduce waste, harmful chemicals, and pollution.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort has also hired an Environmental Officer. This new role will ensure the resort adheres to environmental legislation and reduces environmental pollution.

Castaway Island, Fiji was the second resort to successfully showcase its commitment to sustainability. The resort has adopted the goals and objectives of Outrigger’s OZONE initiatives, and raises awareness of the island’s fragile environment — especially the reef and marine ecosystem — through the education of our guests, staff, and local communities.

The resort constantly improves its performance indicators and best practice techniques, giving priority to employing locals and to sourcing local products and services. In addition, the resort ensures all employees receive the education and training necessary for them to carry out their work in an environmentally responsible manner.

Ben Johnson, Area Director of Sales and Marketing, Fiji Islands says: “We are thrilled to have certified both properties to Green Seal’s hotel and lodging standard, as it is so aligned with Outrigger’s larger ESG strategy. Our ESG focuses on Outrigger’s ZONE initiative (OZONE) which focuses on protecting our oceans and coral reefs. The OZONE platform is renowned for enriching guest experiences, but also has back-of-house goals such as reducing energy, water, and waste while working alongside like-minded local non-profit organisations.”
