ON LOCATION: The scoop on Swoop’s new VRA service, and other Cuba tidbits

With an onboard toast of ceremonial (and symbolic) Gatorade, plus pre-flight goodies for passengers, Swoop launched inaugural no-frills service to Cuba with a full complement of passengers (including Travel Industry Today) headed for sunny Varadero, departing chilly Toronto on W0652.

The flight – welcomed with a fire truck salute upon arrival – represented the “ultra not-expensive” (in Swoop vernacular) carrier’s initial foray to both Varadero and Cuba and also marked the first ultra low-cost flight (ULCC) service from Canada to the island in general.

“We have a beautiful country that’s waiting for you. We’re really excited about today (Jan. 11),” Cuba Tourist Board Canadian director Lessner Gomez declared to passengers during pre-flight remarks.

He added, “Canadians love Cuba and Cuba loves Canadians.”

Gomez said he was already looking forward two more potential Swoop service to his country, noting that discussions for the current Mon.-Wed.-Fri. flights began in 2020, but launch was delayed by the pandemic.

Swoop’s low-cost service will appeal to travellers – including Cuban citizens and expats – who don’t need an all-inclusive package or prefer other accommodation options, such as private homes and Airbnbs, Gomez added.

Flying to Varadero airport also provides easy access to Havana, creating great opportunities for short getaways to the colourful, historic capital after only a three-hour flight.

Air-only prices with Swoop start at $159 one way (bag fees and discretionary buy-on-board options extra).

Julie Pondant of Swoop similarly touted the attractiveness of the airline’s “unbundled” fares for a certain segment of the market, but noted that packages can still be booked.

Departing the same day as Punta Cana flights from Hamilton, Swoop’s entry into Cuba is another step in a whirlwind journey that began when WestJet launched the ULCC in 2018 with only two planes and two destinations. Now, it boasts 16 aircraft and 26 destinations (including 13 from YYZ).

“It’s been really busy, an amazing four-and-a-half years (since launch),” said Swoop marketing exec Kelly Steward, adding, “and there are no signs of slowing down.”

Indeed, on Jan. 1, Swoop registered its single largest travel day, operating 64 flights and carrying 10,268 travellers.

And as for Cuba, Steward declared, “We are confident it will be a success.”

Pondant says adding Cuba to Swoop’s destination roster is an important part of the airline’s growth curve, explaining, “We know it’s an important destination for Canadians and we know the demand is there.”

Flying to Varadero – Cuba’s most popular destination for Canadians – is a natural first step, but also gives access to nearby Havana, she adds.

Further, Swoop’s unbundled model will appeal to those looking for non-traditional Cuba travellers, such as students, backpackers, and multi-destination visitors.

With Swoop, passengers pay a base fare, plus discretionary add-ons – luggage, carry-on (one small personal item like a purse is free), food and drinks, and Internet. (Onboard amenities can be purchased by credit card inflight). Note: Paying for bags in advance is up to 40% less than at check-in).

Packages, as noted, are still available, through WestJet Vacations (with Swoop airfares).

Being part of WestJet is also offers another “huge” advantage for Swoop, which can transfer passengers onto the mainline carrier if necessary in case of delays or cancellations, says Pondant. In Cuba/Varadero, mainline WestJet offer three-times-weekly service on alternate days to Swoop.

With ultimate flexibility and unbundled fares, “what we’re selling,” concludes Pondant, “is that you really have an option to do it another way.”

Lessner, meanwhile, is confident that the entry of Swoop into the Cuban market will help the tourist board’s aim of welcoming one million Canadian visitors in 2023 – a number approaching pre pandemic levels in 2019.

And these visitors will discover, he assures, a new-look Cuba that was not idle during the travel pause, with the opening of both new destinations on the island to visit and new hotels in Havana.

Canadians can also now buy gift cards at banks (up to the equivalent of $5,000 in Cuban pesos) to pay for products and services such as restaurants and shops – “even cigars.”

Old town Havana

For those in (or in proximity to) Varadero, a visit to Havana is a must. The lively city can be toured on a day trip (2-1/2 hours by bus). Other options include Jeep tours (including swimming in a cave); drive-your-own jet boat (river) excursions; catamaran outings; and a crocodile farm/Taino village (by boat) attraction on the Zapata peninsula (lunch in the restaurant is exceptional), amongst many more, most of which can be arranged through one’s hotel.

For its part, Varadero – always known for long stretch of amazing sugar-white sand beach and turquoise water – has come a long way in recent years with a plethora of bars and restaurants, nightclubs, shops, and craft market, many located in the new central “Boulevard” and recently constructed marina district, the latter built for an expected influx of Americans who “never came” (an improving relationship with Cuba during the Obama regime soured again under Trump and the US embargo is still in place).

Internet service is improving and was largely trouble free during our stay at the Melia Internacional, a sparkling new version of the popular property that was rebuilt in 2019 (but was largely unused during the pandemic).

Travel tips

• Canadians can visit Cuba visa-free, subject to filling out a tourist card distributed on the plane. There are no current COVID-10 restrictions.

• Money in Cuba is complicated: Canadian credit cards are accepted (but exchange rates may not be favourable); small bills in Canadian or US are welcome (no coins), especially for tips, and some shops/services accept Cdn. currency. It is recommended to exchange only small amounts into Cuban pesos as they can’t be changed back. (Black market exchanges with more favourable rates are not uncommon but conducted at one’s own discretion).

• Visiting Havana from Varadero is possible and common via inter-city bus (not affiliated with a tour company); hiring a local driver – not least with a vintage car – is another popular option, not just for Havana.

• Russians tourists were still in evidence, but not surprisingly in much reduced numbers, not least because most army-eligible men can’t leave the country. Interestingly, most signage is in English, Spanish, and Russian. Canadians, however, are still the kings of Cuba, and catered to accordingly by locals. (Even carved wooden CFL team beer mugs of all things can be purchased at the Varadero craft market, perhaps making a personal Saskatchewan Roughriders mug the oddest Cuban souvenir you’re ever likely to buy!)

Aimed at National Tourism Administrations, tourism businesses, tourism students and civil society organizations, it focuses on the importance of gender equality, why women’s empowerment matters and what steps can be taken to advance diversity and inclusion efforts across the sector.

Banyan Tree Extends Branch of Hope to Koh Samui Students

Koh Samui, Thailand,  January 17, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Philanthropy lies close to the roots at Banyan Tree. Over the years, the luxury hotel group has sponsored hundreds of causes and projects worldwide through its Banyan Tree Global Foundation.

So when the the general manager of Banyan Tree Samui, Remko Kroesen, heard that a tropical storm had devastated a local community centre on the island, he immediately got in touch with the local administrators and offered assistance.

In addition to funding the cost of reconstruction, the Australian general manager and several volunteers from the hotel rolled up their sleeves and helped out with landscaping and other labour-intensive tasks.

Over a year later, construction work on the canteen at the Wat Santi Wanaram Child Development Centre has been completed, and the 103 children and their teachers can now look forward to a fresh and safe environment for lunch, activities and play.

“We are so grateful to Banyan Tree Samui for recognizing the importance of children’s education here in Koh Samui,” wrote Ms Suthima Chanrak, the acting head of the centre. “We rejoice that we will have a new canteen, not only for the children’s meals, but also a building that will act as a focal point for community activities and town hall meetings.”

Other initiatives implemented successfully by Banyan Tree Samui in recent years include a blood drive campaign, and the ongoing “Seedlings Mentorship” project aimed at nurturing young Samui students between the ages of 12 and 18, providing them with vocational and life skills and education, as well as offering scholarships and financial support to enable select students to continue into higher education.

“As a 5-star resort with beautiful villas and sea views, a spa, and exquisite dining, it would be easy to forget that many of the families on Koh Samui work nearby in coconut plantations or on fishing boats, and are often unable to meet the rising costs of medical care and housing,” said Kroesen. “That’s why we maintain an annual fund to assist those in need, and never forget how lucky we are to share their wonderful island with them.”

Hyatt Hotels says it is expanding its commitment to luxury travel with the launch of Secrets Impression Resorts & Spas – a “first-of-its-kind product” designed to deliver the highest level of luxury all-inclusive service and amenities in its portfolio.

The first resort to feature in the new line, Secrets Impression Moxché Playa del Carmen, opened Dec. 1; the second property, Secrets Impression Isla Mujeres, is set to open in March 15. The properties operate under Hyatt’s AMR Collection.

Canadians can claim the world’s 8th-most valuable passport for the third year running, according to the respected Henley Passport Index, which ranks the world’s 199 passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa (185 for Canadians in 2023). Japan took top spot for the fifth consecutive year (193). Canada has ranked 8th since 2021. Historically, the document has never ranked lower than 9th and hit its high point – 2nd – in 2014.

For three years, TICO waived registrants’ annual registration renewal fees and Compensation Fund assessments, but the regulating body is reminding that the arrangement will come to an end on March 31, 2023, with TICO temporarily reverting to the fee structure that was in place prior to the pandemic. All registrants with a year-end or six-month period-end on or after Jan. 1, 2023, will have fees owing starting on April 1: Registration renewal fees – payable 90 days after fiscal year-end; Compensation Fund assessments – payable semi-annually (payment 1-90 days after fiscal year-end; payment 2-90 days after fiscal half year-end).

 Air Transat launched a new promotional campaign: “Come Back Changed.” Inspired by the belief that travel has transformative powers, it aims to demonstrate the importance of travel and its ability to transform not only our way of being by expanding our horizons, but also our state of mind. This campaign, rolled out in Quebec and Ontario, the campaign includes 15- and 30-videos available online on YouTube as well as on various digital platforms plus radio ads.

The multiplatform campaign can also be seen online in consumer and trade media. To support the campaign, attractive flight and packages rates are offered for travellers heading South (including Florida).

With its flights running on a roughly normal schedule again, Southwest Airlines is now turning its attention to repairing its damaged reputation after it cancelled 16,700 flights around Christmas and left holiday travellers stranded. Experts says the debacle may lead to US$600 million in lost revenue for the airline, plus higher expenses such as vouchers and frequent-flyer points.

Sunwing has cancelled its seasonal operations from Sudbury and North Bay. The routes were originally scheduled weekly from Dec. 14 to Apr. 13, from Sudbury to Punta Cana, and from North Bay to Varadero. In a statement the company said, “The difficult decision to cancel winter flights beginning in February was deemed necessary due to operational and business constraints that would prevent us from delivering the standards of service our customers expect when travelling with Sunwing.”  Affected customers can transfer their vacation package to same-day departures from Toronto, as well as a $100 future travel credit. Customers who decide to cancel will receive a full refund.

Canada Jetlines has announced a partnership with TripAdmit, an online booking system that gives travellers the ability to select and book from a full range of tours and activities in the destinations served by the airline. TripAdmit’s white label solution enables distribution partners to provide their customers with the opportunity to choose and book from a portfolio of over 50,000 trip and activity experiences in over 100 countries globally.

 Delta Air Lines will provide free Wi-Fi service on most of its US flights starting in February. The airline says that by the end of the year it will outfit more than 700 planes with high-speed, satellite-based broadband service from T-Mobile and plans to expand free Wi-Fi to international and Delta Connection flights by the end of 2024.

Türkiye’s flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and Mongolia’s flag carrier, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, recently signed a codeshare agreement. The signed agreement between two flag carriers will enable both carriers to provide more flexibility of choice to their passengers on direct flights between Türkiye and Mongolia as well as flights connecting via İstanbul.

Cosmos is waiving the single supplement on 15 tours across Europe and North America in 2023. Among the options are the seven-day “Rome, Florence & Venice”; nine-day “Irish Discovery”; and 13-day “Canadian Rockies.”

The “Bye-Bye Winter Event” from Air Canada Vacations is back with savings of up to 40% on winter escapes booked by Feb. 5 for travel by April 30 to select destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America and select Flight and Hotel packages to Hawaii, Orlando, and California.

American Queen Voyages has updated its all-inclusive fare offerings for 2023. The new pricing structure includes port charges, taxes, services fees, and onboard crew gratuities. Travel agents will also earn commission on previously non-commissionable fees (NCFs) as an opportunity to increase earnings.

PONANT is the first expedition company to offer a voyage to the tropical islands of Southern Japan, with an all-new eight-day itinerary aboard Le Soléal from Taiwan to Okinawa. Departing March 24-31, the weeklong sailing will offer an immersion in the traditional villages and craft of the Okinawa archipelago and the Ryukyu Islands, with snorkeling, diving, and zodiac excursions, and discovering the beautiful beaches of Ishigaki, and Kume. Louisiana’s cuisine is unlike anywhere else, and locals have conjured up a plethora of ways to honor these traditional dishes and the influences that brought them to life.

Beignets, the sugary-sweet fried dough pillows traditionally topped with powdered sugar, can also be found stuffed with savory or sweet ingredients across Louisiana. While Café Du Monde in New Orleans’ French Quarter is the unofficial world capital of beignets, New Orleans also has an annual Beignet Festival that you won’t want to miss.
