Four Seasons to Bring Legendary Service to the Seas - TRAVELINDEXToronto, Canada, October 2, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / A steadfast, enterprising spirit is launching Four Seasons into a new and exciting business extension – Four Seasons Yachts. Along with Four Seasons, this new venture brings together an unparalleled group of partners: Nadim Ashi and Philip Levine, leading luxury entrepreneurs and bold visionaries of this exceptional yacht experience, as well as Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding groups, which will deliver the first new vessel by the end of 2025. The order, which was announced last July, includes the option for two additional vessels and amounts to approximately EUR 1.2 billion.

The first Four Seasons Yacht will be marked by bespoke craftsmanship, personalized service and a dedication to excellence, appealing to discerning guests looking to reimagine their love of travel by experiencing the splendour of modern sea voyaging.

“Four Seasons Yachts represents the next chapter of our long history of industry leading innovation, and a milestone moment for our company as we continue to capitalize on new opportunities to extend the world of Four Seasons,” says Christian Clerc, President, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. “True vision rests in the ability to imagine the possibilities while always remaining loyal to one’s values. Our vision for this new venture does exactly that. Together with our partners at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD, we are creating something extraordinary that combines their expertise with what Four Seasons does best – delivering unmatched quality and excellence, surrounded by beautiful acts of service and love for our guests.”

With its inaugural journey anticipated for late 2025, the first Four Seasons vessel will be 207 metres (679 feet) long and 27 metres (88.6 feet) wide with 14 decks. At a cost to build of USD 4.2 million per suite, no expense is being spared in terms of the remarkable custom design. The first Four Seasons Yacht will offer nearly 50 percent more living space per guest than currently available, offering ultimate privacy, flexibility and spaciousness in an all-suite nautical residential setting.

Veteran luxury travel industry expert Larry Pimentel is responsible for leading the new enterprise. “In partnership with Four Seasons, we are creating a new category of luxury lifestyle travel that appeals to discerning guests. We are bringing together the very best across industries to create the pinnacle yachting offering through world-class design, curated experiences, and truly exceptional service,” says Pimentel. “When we launch in 2025, there will be nothing else like it on the open seas. Our shipbuilding partnership with Fincantieri rounds out a triumvirate of industry leaders in this unprecedented luxury lifestyle project.”

The Four Seasons Yacht Experience

The vessel’s 95 spacious accommodations will feature an extensive network of joining suite combinations creating adaptable, villa-like residences. Each suite will offer floor-to-ceiling windows providing unobstructed natural light and access to expansive terrace decks. The combination of generous indoor and outdoor private guest space and ceiling heights of more than 2.4 metres (7.9 feet) will achieve a new level of guest comfort.

Suite accommodations will start at an average of 54 square metres (581 square feet) of indoor/outdoor living space, designed seamlessly to be part of each room. Sixty percent of the vessel’s inventory is in excess of 76 square metres (818 square feet) of indoor/outdoor space. The most expansive residence, the “Funnel Suite” will be an astonishing four levels, offering more than 892 square metres (9,601 square feet) of combined indoor/outdoor living space, including a private wading pool and dedicated private spa area, creating a sea view home away from home.

Globally renowned design partners have been engaged including Tillberg Design of Sweden as lead architect responsible for the design of exterior and guest suites, and London-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studio for the design of many of the yacht’s spectacular guest areas. These design partners will be paired with the creative direction of Prosper Assouline.

An Unparalleled Guest Experience at Sea

The vessel’s restaurants, lounges and bar concepts will celebrate the excellence and creativity that has been the hallmark of Four Seasons history of culinary innovation and attention to guest preferences. A perfect cappuccino in the lobby, a Mediterranean-inspired lunch, a dinner tasting at the sushi bar or a glass of champagne on the breathtaking terrace – guests will never be far from a perfect bite always paired with remarkable sea views, renowned intuitive service, and much more.

The Four Seasons Yacht will also offer guests a full-service spa, salon, and wellness programming – from fitness to health, and nutrition. The classic canoe-shaped aft will be home to an expansive pool deck, allowing for moments of leisure and relaxation. This area will also transform into an outdoor movie theatre or space for an array of private events. The elegant and industry-first transverse marina is also an ideal spot for guests to enjoy the inviting water, sunbathe or explore the specially-designed aqua leisure toys and accessories. Many more of the vessel’s unique features and programming will be revealed in the coming months and up to the vessel’s delivery in late 2025.

The onboard yacht experience will be led and staffed by a dedicated Four Seasons Yacht team to bring each voyage’s itinerary and destinations to life. The vessel will have an industry-leading staff-to-guest ratio to deliver an unmatched standard of highly personalized service.

The Making of the Four Seasons Yacht

Planned as the first of a fleet of Four Seasons Yachts over the next five years, the first vessel is currently being designed in Trieste, Italy by leading shipbuilders Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups.

“We are excited to embrace this new opportunity with Four Seasons that will allow us to strengthen our global leadership position,” says Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri CEO and Managing Director. “With a reputation built on innovation and reliability, Fincantieri combines groundbreaking engineering and technology to create the finest vessels in the world, ensuring sustainability practices are integrated throughout the design and guest experience.”

With a distinct focus on guest-centric luxury finishings, Fincantieri has received global acclaim and achieved industry awards. “This project is in a class of its own, combining the best of passenger ship construction and yacht design to create a new benchmark for ultra-luxury vessels” adds Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager Merchant Ships Division of Fincantieri.

Four Seasons Yachts is the latest addition to the brand’s world-class offerings, from the ongoing global expansion of new hotel, resort and residential properties to the Four Seasons Private Jet Experience, the Four Seasons At Home Collection and more. This introduction of a new lifestyle travel experience is taking place at the world-renowned Monaco Yacht Show on September 28, 2022.

Silversea’s Controtempo World Cruise 2025 Introduces Beautifully Off-Tempo Rhythms

1080 502 wttc2

How do you create a world cruise for travelers who have pretty much been everywhere? For Controtempo, Silversea Cruises’ 136-day World Cruise 2025, Silversea has created an innovative itinerary that will visit offbeat places – in offbeat seasons.

The inspiration behind Controtempo, says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s president and chief executive officer, “is to take guests closer to the authentic heartbeat of iconic and off-the-beaten-path destinations. We will be traveling to an unusual rhythm, from East to West, with more time ashore in unconventional seasons.”

In the cruise industry, world cruises typically begin in winter and end in spring and focus primarily on destinations where warmer weather prevails. That’s what’s different about Controtempo.

“We’re going at the time of year when you’re not going to find millions of tourists at both marquee and less-discovered destinations,” says Andrea Tonet, Silversea’s vice president of product strategy. “We’re traveling deeper because we’re offering a different perspective, a different view, of the places you may think you know.”

Controtempo World Cruise 2025 departs from Tokyo on Jan. 13, 2025, and arrives in New York, its final port of call, on May 29, 2025. The 136-day voyage visits 30 countries and 59 ports on four continents. There are 33 overnight calls, seven exclusive-to-full-world-cruise-guests bespoke events, three optional overland tours and 23 world cruise maiden calls.

The 596-passenger Silver Dawn, which made its debut in 2022, will host Controtempo, and Martinoli notes that for Silversea this world cruise will have the highest space ratio onboard, including the largest selection of restaurants, bars and lounges. The world cruise will also feature S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste), Silversea’s culinary immersion program, and OTIVM, its indulgent wellness initiative.

Sea trials of the Silver Dawn.

“This,” Martinoli says, “is an invitation to gain a different perspective on the world in true Silversea style.”

Let’s travel the world in search of stories
If you were to ask Fernando Barroso de Oliveira, who, as the President’s Ambassador to the Venetian Society has hosted 20 world cruises in his 27 years with the company, about the most intriguing aspect of Controtempo, he’ll tell you it’s that the world cruise will be full of stories.

“We’re visiting iconic places in a different way, experiencing them through our network of locals,” he says. “Our guests will have access to stories that are not normally told, via experiences that offer knowledge and, just as importantly, a strong emotional connection.”

And he’s looking forward to more immersive events and experiences, he says (access Controtempo’s complete itinerary here). Such as?

● Silversea’s Exclusive Experiences, available to full world cruise guests only, are a hallmark of its world cruises,” he says. “On Controtempo, events in the works include a trip to the famous onsen town of Kannawa, in Japan, where an expert therapist will accompany guests to a famous hot spring. While visiting Vietnam’s Da Nang travelers will learn about the influence the Champa civilization has had on Southeast Asia – and enjoy live performances and a gourmet Vietnamese dinner, all set with a backdrop of illuminated temples. Anyone who’s traveled often to Singapore will find a new experience in a curated event that blends new and old atop the 57-story Marina Bay Sands hotel. In Cairo on a two-night overland tour – available to all guests – imagine a private tour of the 500-room Abdeen Presidential Palace, and a VIP after-hours visit to the new Grand Egyptian Museum. From the port of France’s Rouen, guests visit Versailles for a Marie Antoinette-inspired evening of indulgence, complete with dancing, court jesters and Champagne.

● Three optional overland events — and one optional pre-cruise trek — will take guests off Silver Dawn and into less-visited places, starting with a five-day, pre-cruise exploration of some of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. Visit the famous Japanese snow monkeys of the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, ride Japan’s bullet train in first class, meet a Bonsai Master and relax in natural heated mineral baths. On the Singapore to Mumbai leg, an optional three-day tour on the iconic Eastern & Oriental Express explores rural Malaysia, and Kanchanaburi, Thailand, for a River Kwai Bridge cruise. In Egypt, travel overland from Ain Sukhna in the footsteps of the pharaohs. And from St. John’s, Newfoundland take a three-day trip to Prince Edward Island.

● Overnight calls, which allow multi day in-port experiences, will occur in destinations such as Osaka, Japan; Xiamen, China; Hong Kong; and Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh City. Other overnight calls feature Singapore; Phuket, Thailand; Chennai and Mumbai, India; and Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee. On Controtempo’s Mumbai-to-Istanbul segment, calls include Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah and Egypt’s Luxor. As Silver Dawn reaches European shores, overnights take place in Istanbul, Sicily’s Siracusa and Naples; and Málaga. Moving north, overnights include Rouen, three days in the magnificent Bordeaux; Hamburg, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; Helsinki; Tallinn, Estonia; and Stockholm. More of Northern Europe awaits as Oslo, Norway; Reykjavik, Iceland; Greenland’s capital of Nuuk, and Newfoundland’s St. John’s, as well as Boston.

● There are 19 entirely new-to-Silversea-world-cruise ports on Controtempo including Japan’s Kagashima, Naha, and Beppu. Greece’s Thessaloniki and Volos, the gateway to Sesklo, its oldest acropolis, dating to the Neolithic era, are maiden calls as well. You may have traveled to Italy’s Naples, another new port for a Silversea world cruise itinerary but did you know that, besides its famed pizza, the southern city is home to some of Christianity’s oldest frescoes? Also on tap: Spain’s Cadiz, Guernsey’s darling St. Peter Port; Greenland’s Qaqortoq; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Boston.

As Fernando reminds us, “World cruise travelers are among the most well-traveled people in the world,” the biggest challenge to creating this unique 136-day itinerary is this: “How can we surprise them? For Controtempo, we believe there is value in going to the most beautiful places around the planet in a different time, outside of the peak season. By going to these places in a different moment, you can access experiences, sites, and specific moments that are quite unique and not visible at any time of the year.”

Antarctica Bridge Opens Up the White Continent

1080 608 wttc2

Antarctica has been described by many as an unforgettable, life-changing experience of stark, otherworldly surroundings and beguiling wildlife — which is why the experience should be accessible to more luxury travelers.

Which has been — until now — a challenge. Voyages to Antarctica, which depart from Argentina’s Ushuaia, must sail for two days across the notoriously choppy Drake Passage to get to the White Continent. Returning, there’s another two days on the Drake.

What if you could eliminate those four days at sea on a 10-day sailing — and still have six days to explore Antarctica? Now you can, on Silversea Cruises’ newly acquired Silver Endeavour, which offers Antarctica Bridge itineraries from November 2022.

With the creation of Silversea’s Antarctica Bridge fly-cruise program, those with limited time — or those who have previously sailed the full itinerary — can step foot in the continent just over 90 minutes after takeoff from Punta Arenas, Chile. The chartered, business class flights are piloted by skilled Chilean navy pilots with 10,000 hours of flight time.

Gateway to the Last Continent

The fly-cruise program begins and ends on King George Island in the South Shetlands, known as the Gateway to the Last Continent. The journey brings Silversea guests on unscheduled experiences kayaking, boating, or simply walking along the icy shoreline to admire and explore Antarctica’s natural wonders. Guests might see penguins, seals, or towering rock-and-ice formations — all with just days spent on the Seventh Continent.

“Flying to Antarctica is an incredible experience,” says Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s SVP of Expedition, Destinations, and Itinerary Management. Even if guests have been to the destination before, he mentions that flying in is a completely unique experience to the two-day ocean voyage. There is an announcement to put on your rubber boots and parkas about 15 minutes prior to landing, which is unlike a Drake Passage crossing or a typical flight.

Combrink says the fly-cruise program has been a dream of his since Silversea Expeditions launched in 2008. “Today, with Antarctica Bridge, the White Continent has never been closer.” And Combrink would know; he has been to Antarctica more than 76 times and maintains that no matter how many times you go, “It’s always a dream destination.”

Southeast Asia’s Hospitality Leaders Fight For Sustainability at PHIST 5

Southeast Asia's Hospitality Leaders Fight For Sustainability at PHIST 5 - TRAVELINDEX - VISITPHUKETPhuket, Thailand, September 30, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / PHIST (Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism) is back as a live, in-person gathering, this important annual forum embraced the combative, cultural spirit of Muay Thai to spark candid conversation and instigate positive change in the travel and tourism industry. The theme of PHIST 5 was Muay Thai, the high-energy, culturally-rich sport of Thai boxing, which has gained global popularity and represents the battle to preserve authentic art and heritage

PHIST, Southeast Asia’s biggest and best responsible travel and hospitality forum, returned on Monday 26th September to deliver a knockout blow to unsustainable tourism in Southeast Asia! Back as a live, in-person gathering, this fast-paced event tackled the key topics impacting the region and supported the green recovery of hotels and tourism operators following the global pandemic.

Hosted at ACES, Angsana Laguna Phuket, the theme of this year’s PHIST was Muay Thai, the high-energy, culturally-rich sport of Thai boxing, which has gained fame and popularity around the world and represents the battle to preserve authentic art, heritage and tradition. Muay Thai fighters from Australia, Brazil, Thailand and the USA faced off in the main hall of ACES on Monday in a series of “super fights” for the Nai Khanom Tom belt, which is partly woven by the Me Fah Luang Foundation in the hills of northern Thailand.

Following these physical battles, keynote speakers delivered verbal blows as they provided unique insights on the critical issues facing the industry, including community tourism, green operations, ocean health, destination management, post-COVID trends and more. This included the “Rumble in the Jungle” – seven verbal bouts between two speakers, culminating in a battle of the heavyweights.

A series of expert-led workshops focused on practical subjects such as “Green Finance for Hotels,” “Zero Waste” and “Materials for Sustainable Tourism,” and a Green Expo presented a comprehensive selection of innovative, eco-friendly products from approximately 30 exhibitors. Finally, delegates were able to discuss the day’s events with evening networking drinks.

Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks and the co-founder & co-organiser of PHIST, said: “We are so pleased that PHIST returned this week as a live, face-to-face event. The global pandemic disrupted every aspect of our lives, but perhaps if it had one positive outcome it is that it forced the world to live, work and think more sustainably. At PHIST 5, we dug deep into the most important trends effecting the industry and delivered practical, workable solutions that hoteliers and business owners can use to boost their operations at this challenging time – and future-proof them for years to come.”

Bjorn Courage, President of the Phuket Hotels Association, commented: “Last year, even when many businesses were struggling to stay above water, we saw the travel trade come together at our virtual forum to advance the cause of sustainability. This week, as 500 delegates from across Southeast Asia met face-to-face at PHIST 5, we were able to share more ideas and put our pledges into action. Collaboration is the key – when people come together, great things can happen. What we decided at PHIST can drive positive benefits for your business and the entire region. It was great to see everyone jumping in the ring and getting involved!”

Hope Uy, Managing Director of South Palms Resort in Panglao, stated: “Islands such as Panglao and Phuket feel environmental and social issues even more acutely than other destinations. Fresh water, waste disposal, coral bleaching; these are not only concepts – they impact our lives and operations on a day-to-day basis. The only sustainable solution is to work hand-in-hand with communities and to create a circular economy. I was delighted to come together with like-minded people at PHIST 5 to share our experiences and offer workable solutions.”

Kevin Deisser, CEO & Founder of Invest Islands, added: “In a diverse archipelago such as Indonesia, preserving the integrity of island life is at the heart of everything with do. Every development we undertake must have a positive impact on local people, and, if undertaken in the right way, this will drive long-term benefits to all parties. In Indonesia and across Southeast Asia, indigenous people have already established highly sustainable ways of life. As outsiders, tourism providers and developers need to work with the islanders and learn from them.”

Eric Ricaurte, founder & CEO of Greenview, concluded: “Prior to the pandemic, traveller mindsets were already changing. Now, with travel and tourism at a crossroads, people are wanting more authentic experiences that connect them with their chosen destination. Our PHIST workshops were designed to create best practices for hotels that will not only strengthen their sustainability objectives, but also bring them closer to the local community. Tourism plays a pivotal role in the development of islands, so it is critical that we act responsibly.”

An exciting new feature at this year’s PHIST was the inaugural award for “Sustainable Design Innovation”, which was presented to Patrick Keane, founder of Enter Projects. Founded in 2005, Enter Projects has created myriad award-winning projects and continues to gain global acclaim for its eco-master planning, architecture and interior services.

UNWTO at G20: Putting People & Small Enterprises at Centre of Recovery

500 321 wttc2

UNWTO at G20 Putting People & Small Enterprises at Centre of Recovery - TRAVELINDEXBali, Indonesia, September 30, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / UNWTO, the G20 Indonesian Presidency and the G20 Tourism Working Group have collaborated over the past year to deliver the G20 Guidelines on Strengthening MSMEs and Communities as Agents of Transformation in Tourism on the occasion of the G20 Tourism Ministers Meeting in Bali.

The Guidelines provide guidance for key policies that can create resilient and sustainable MSMEs and communities spanning five key pillars:

  1. Human Capital
  2. Innovation, digitalization and the creative economy
  3. Women and youth empowerment
  4. Climate action, biodiversity conservation, and circularity, and
  5. Policy, governance and investment

They also draw up over 40 cases studies from G20 members and guest countries focused on the promotion of MSMEs and communities

MSMEs and communities, the backbone of our sector, need strong support to be agents a people centred transformation

Accelerating positive action

Addressing the G20 Tourism Ministers Meeting, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Our sector has now recovered almost 60% of pre-pandemic levels. However, we are falling behind in our efforts to reach the climate action goals of the Paris Agreement. We are also behind in progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. “

“Tourism can help us get back on track. But we need to speed up. And we need to scale up. MSMEs and communities, the backbone of our sector, need strong support to be agents a people centred transformation” he added.

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno said “I am truly delighted that the G20 Tourism Working Group is able to adopt the G20 Bali Guidelines. The Guidelines embody a number of policy best practices in the five main lines of actions. These lines of actions are essential to put the holistic wellbeing of our people at the heart of tourism recovery. We do not wish for tourism to just simply rebound, we need it to be better in serving the needs of our communities by creating good jobs, empowering the marginalized and safeguarding our planet, which our guidelines aim for.”

“I earnestly applaud UNWTO as the key institutional partner of our G20 presidency for steadfastly working together with us to continuously improve the Guidelines,” the Minister added.

Skills, inclusion, sustainability and governance

The Guidelines focus among others on:

  • developing targeted policies based on social dialogue and multi-stakeholder collaboration to promote vocational education and training, skills development, and lifelong learning of the tourism workforce by engaging industry and technology partners;
  • stimulating entrepreneurship including through tourism business incubation and promoting the creation of decent jobs in tourism;
  • strengthening linkages between the tourism sector and local communities by encouraging partnership with local suppliers;
  • bridging the innovation gap and promoting responsible innovation;
  • developing guidance for MSMEs to enable them to tap into digitalization, improve their products and boost their productivity through the creative economy;
  • ensuring equality and non-discrimination, with particular attention to young people in vulnerable situations, promoting the application of gender-equality and equal opportunity principles for all youth in tourism including equal remuneration for work of equal value, equal participation and equal treatment;
  • implementing, within respective national policy, more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices; and
  • Improving tourism data, including the use of big data, the implementation of international statistical standards and the development of adequate methodology for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism as evidence-based policy-making as well as facilitating data sharing including through public-private partnerships.

Research developed for the guidelines by UNWTO with G20 countries highlights the need to address challenges for MSMEs of lack of access to finance, lack of access to market intelligence, market uncertainty, the volatility of the workforce, changing consumer trends and needs and low levels of innovation.

For communities, the most relevant challenges include the uncertainty of the market and changing consumer trends, leakages (revenue generated by tourism in the community which does not stay in the community), lack of education and skills, lack of adequate infrastructure and governance and excessive dependence on tourism.
