UNWTO Calls on Start-Ups to Join Awake Tourism Challenge - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, April 23, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / UNWTO has launched the second edition of its global flagship competition under the name of “Awake Tourism Challenge”. The competition will identify innovators who are advancing solutions to 6 different challenges, as well contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Read all the latest UNWTO News and Updates here.

For the 2022 challenge, UNWTO will focus on specific areas that can help the recovery of the tourism sector in a disruptive way, and which deserve extra attention right now, namely:

  • Community involvement: 80% of people living in ‘extreme poverty’ live in rural communities while domestic, rural and eco-tourism have emerged as the most popular travel choices.
  • Green and blue economies: Tourism can be a source of economic opportunities and at the same time protect natural ecosystems.
  • Ecological and Sustainable Capital Creation: Sustainable capital has the potential to optimize resource usage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a competitive advantage for businesses.
  • Tourism Tech for Good: Advancements in technology have revolutionized the sector, especially since the start of the pandemic. Artificial Intelligence, crypto, block chain, metaverse, NFTs are welcome in this category.
  • Tourism Education: Despite representing 10% of the world’s jobs, there is a need for updated data, and new tools for education and skills development.
  • Women Empowerment: Women tend to be concentrated in the lowest paid and lowest status jobs in tourism. Startups with a gender focus can be an important contributor to equality.

The return of tourism is a chance to awaken its potential to transform lives

Organized in collaboration with Wakalua, the first global innovation hub for tourism, powered by Ávoris, the competition also counts on the support of a number of major partners, including; SPARK, the Innovation Hub of Les Roches from the Sommet Education group, and Ankh Impact Ventures (AIV), an impact-driven venture capital investment platform with a gender and racial equity lens. It also counts on strong public and private sector backing, with Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism, Singapore Tourism Board, KPMG, MasterCard, Amadeus, IE University, Telefonica, Wayra, ClarkeModet, The FarCo, BBVA, MentorDay, Finnova, Google for Startups, The Valley Digital Business School, the Future Food Institute and the Inter-American Development Bank all on board.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashviki said: “The return of tourism is a chance to awaken its potential to transform lives. UNWTO is calling on startups everywhere to put forward their ideas for meeting the biggest challenges our sector is facing and for making tourism a champion of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Startups are invited to participate provided that they:

  • Apply to 1 of the 6 challenges
  • Include 1 or more SDGs
  • Are innovative in nature and provide value-added solutions
  • Are sustainability-driven
  • Are scalable, with potential for international growth and potential to be applied in corporations and destinations (countries, regions)
  • Are an Early Stage or Series A startups
  • Have a tested pilot and business plan
  • Have been accelerated before
  • Have a full-time team already in place

The 12 most disruptive startups (2 for each of the Challenges) will be given support to scale-up. UNWTO will present the best ideas to its Member States, Affiliate Members and investors, providing them with a unique networking opportunity. Additional benefits include the chance to pitch at a special UNWTO Demo Day and access to technological support and to the UNWTO Innovation network, as well as a curated mentorship programme with both one-on-one and group training sessions on key topics such as Intellectual Property, sustainability in business and leadership, possible seed funding for female Startup founders from Ankh Impact Ventures, and incubation for 3 months at the SPARK Innovation Lab.

Applications are now open and will close 31 June 2022. The winning startups will be announced in October. To find out more and to apply, visit the webpage of the UNWTO Awake Tourism Challenge.

Among last weeks noteworthy news: ACTA said pursuing more financial subsidies for agents is unlikely; a US judge junked mask mandates; Jamaica jammed pre-arrival testing; Rocky Mountaineer is rolling again; and Margaritaville at Sea says it has special rates for agents.

NEWS

While ACTA is reporting that it has received a number of comments from members expressing disappointment over the end of federal financial subsidies, association president Wendy Paradis says, “At this point, it is clear that further pursuing financial subsidies after a definite ‘no’ (in the recent federal budget) is not in our members’ interest, when there is no reasonable prospect of success. We also do not want to give travel agencies and independent travel agents false hope.”

Citing increasing consumer interest in learning about the consumer protection available to them, TICO has launched an interactive quiz answering several questions about travel preferences. At the end consumers are reminded about the importance of booking with a TICO-registered travel agency or website. The TICO Traveller Quiz also reveals an individual’s travel style, whether they are a Sun Soaker, an Awesome Adventurer, a Corporate Commuter, or an Enlightened Explorer. TICO invites agents to share the quiz on social media; check it out for yourself at https://www.tico.ca/quiz

A federal judge in Florida has voided the national mask mandate covering airplanes and other public transportation as exceeding the authority of US health officials in the coronavirus pandemic. The ruling is being challenged.

The number of signatories to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism has passed the 500-mark, just four months after the landmark initiative was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference. On Friday, coinciding with International Mother Earth Day, the UNWTO announced that Expedia Group, Booking Holdings and Condé Nast became the latest signatories, joining 538 stakeholders of all sizes and from every part of the tourism sector.

BORDERS

Canadians, along with other international visitors, to Jamaica are no longer required to present a negative result from a COVID-19 antigen or PCR test conducted within 72 hours prior to their travel to enter the island. Additionally, Jamaica’s mandate to wear a mask in enclosed public spaces has also been rescinded.

Travelling to Cyprus is now easier as the need for visitors to undergo any COVID-19 tests prior to boarding a flight or on arrival has been rescinded. According to the new regulations, only unvaccinated people who haven’t contracted and recovered from the coronavirus must undergo a PCR test 72 hours prior to boarding or a rapid test 24 hours before departure.

Cambodia has reduced the required quarantine period from two weeks to one for arriving travellers who are not fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Travellers arriving by air who have not been fully vaccinated must take a rapid antigen test on the last day of their quarantine.

CONFLICT

Canadians can now give cash or Aeroplan points to help bring Ukrainians fleeing the war with Russia to safety in Canada. The goal is to pay for flights to bring at least 10,000 Ukrainians and their families approved for travel to Canada (on top of targeted chartered flights announced earlier this year). The program is being managed by Miles4Migrants, a US-based charity that uses donated frequent flyer miles to help people impacted by war who have legal approval to travel but cannot afford airfare. The refund will be done according to the payment method on file. For Eco Flex and Club Flex fares, cancellation is possible at no additional cost. In addition, the flexibility to change flight itineraries, which has been in effect since Dec. 1, continues. Passengers can now change their date and/or destination free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. Only the fare difference applies.

WestJet has partnered with the FlightHub Group to assist in the transportation of GlobalMedic’s field team members to and from areas impacted by the conflict in Ukraine. WTTC Launches Hotel Sustainability Initiative Global In Manila

500 292 wttc2

WTTC Launches Hotel Sustainability Initiative Global In Manila - TRAVELINDEX - SUSTAINABLEFIRST.comManila, Philippines, April 22, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched its ‘Hotel Sustainability Basics’, a globally recognised and coordinated set of criteria that all hotels should implement as a minimum to drive responsible Travel & Tourism.

The initiative was launched today at its prestigious Global Summit being held in Manila this week, and will help every hotel address and improve their environmental impact.

Developed by the industry for the industry, it highlights 12 actions which are fundamental to hotel sustainability and will help raise the base level of sustainability across the entire hospitality industry by providing every hotel a starting point on their sustainability journey.

The initiative has already gained support from major global groups such as Jin Jiang International (Holdings) Co., Ltd. including their affiliates Jin Jiang Hotels, Louvre Hotels Group and Radisson Hotel Group, Accor, Barceló Hotel Group, Meliá Hotels International, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), as well as key hotel associations around the world like the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), the Hotel Association of India (HAI) and many more. Collectively this represents more than 50,000 hotels around the world.

WTTC’s ‘Hotel Sustainability Basics’ provides the global hospitality sector with a baseline of positive actions to be taken to ensure they meet at least the minimum sustainability requirements.

However, this is just the beginning of their journey, and WTTC urges the sector to seek constant improvements beyond the 12 basic criteria so that every hotel, whether an individual business or part of a larger group, moves on to more advanced frameworks and greater sustainability.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “We are launching the Hotel Sustainability Basics to ensure no hotel, however small, is left behind in the drive to introduce a basis sustainability measures within a minimum level the next three years.

“Sustainability is non-negotiable but not every small hotel has access to the science on how to make a difference. This gives everyone access to a global standard and provides consumers to travel with conference.

“WTTC wants the hospitality industry to lead by example so that sustainability becomes the basic requirement used to drive change forward for this generation and the next.”

The criteria, developed by WTTC in close collaboration with leading global brands and industry associations, focus on actions which are fundamental to hotel sustainability and address tourism’s impact on the planet across a spectrum of critical issues.

These criteria include actions to measure and reduce energy use, measure and reduce water use, identify and reduce waste, and measure and reduce carbon emissions.

It also includes a linen reuse program, use of green cleaning products, the elimination of plastic straws, stirrers, and single-use plastic water bottles, the implementation of bulk amenity dispensers, as well as measures to benefit local communities.

WTTC is now calling upon hotel operators, owners, associations, and investors around the world to officially support the initiative and work across their networks to implement the criteria over the coming three years.

Wolfgang M. Neumann, Sustainable Hospitality Alliance Chair, said: “Every industry must do its part to ensure the future of our planet and its people.

While many companies are taking great strides and leading the way, others are only now taking their first steps.

“By offering an understanding of the simplest steps hotels can take to become more sustainable, the Hotel Sustainability Basics will help to raise the base level of sustainability across the entire hospitality industry.

“This initiative acts as a steppingstone to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality which will enable every hotel to take a strategic and progressive approach to achieving a positive environmental impact, whatever their starting point.”

Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, said: “These Hotel Sustainability Basics are an excellent way for hotels to take the first step on their journey to sustainability.

“The GSTC Industry Criteria for Hotels serve as the global standard for sustainable hospitality and the Basics map to eight of those that have been frequently mentioned by our global partners as essential first steps. As such, GSTC supports the application of this program and we encourage users that do not comply to them currently take steps to move quickly to do so.”

On stage at its Global Summit in Manila, Julia Simpson told delegates that hotel groups, brands, and operators, in addition to owners which represent a number of hotels, can become WTTC recognised supporters by endorsing the initiative and completing the Green Lodging Trends Survey (GLTS) to benchmark their performance and keep track of progress.

Initially eight of the 12 criteria are mandatory, whilst others can be committed to and covered within the first three years.

This provides a clear starting point for all stakeholders and will ensure the minimum level of sustainability is achieved across the global hotel industry.

The criteria have been developed under the leadership of WTTC and through a working group of 11 hotel companies, with the support of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. They have been reviewed, debated, and reworked following several rounds of industry consultation so that they truly represent the common denominator and most transversal sustainability actions across the industry. The working group members include Accor, Barcelo Hotel Group, Huazhu Group Limited including their affiliate Deutsche Hospitality, Indian Hotels Company Limited, Jin Jiang Hotels, Louvre Hotels Group, Meliá Hotels International, Minor International, NH Hotel Group, and Radisson Hotel Group.

Worlds First Aerial Beach at Panama’s Bocas Bali Luxury Resort

Worlds First Aerial Beach at Panama's Bocas Bali Luxury Resort - TOP25ISLANDS.com - TRAVELINDEXFrangipani Island, Bocas Del Toro, Panama, April 21, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Within sight of spirited Bocas Town in Bocas Del Toro, Panama, lies an extraordinary Balinese inspired over-the-water getaway, Bocas Bali, which rivals the most breathtaking resorts in the world. Our resort’s charismatic host Scott Dinsmore ensures a warm, unforgettable experience for our guests, who enjoy our rare blend of informal spontaneity in an elegant Caribbean setting.

Bocas Bali elevates your beach experience, and they mean that literally. At the luxury resort there was just one thing missing, a beach. Now, the resort, which opened its doors in September 2021, announced the completion of its overwater beach. Bocas Bali, an adults-only resort has just revealed what its owner refers to as the “world’s first aerial beach.” Named Kupu-Kupu, borrowed from the Indonesian word for butterfly, the beach is approximately 90 feet long and 20 feet wide. Built on pilings over the water, it features white sand, palm trees, lounge chairs and a bar. A 10-foot-wide wooden boardwalk connects it to the island.

Set on Panama’s Frangipani Island, its 16 stilted overwater villas were crafted in Bali then shipped to Panama. Some come with private pools, others have a glass floor inlay, allowing guests to view the sea life below. A series of bamboo treehouses are now under development and due to open this year.

Guests enjoy 1,100 square feet of spectacular alfresco living, resting on stilts over the Caribbean Sea. In addition to a private pool and terrace, each villa features a king bed with sumptuous linens and an elegant hand-carved soapstone mural. In traditional Balinese style, artists dedicated over 1,000 hours to carving each villa’s teak wood furnishings.

PUBS, PATIOS & BARS: The best Birmingham pub crawl

1080 494 wttc2

Birmingham, England, is set for prime time this summer with the influx of thousands of visitors for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. If you or someone you know is one of the lucky ones to be attending (or competing), or perhaps you’re just inspired to revisit the impressively rejuvenated city at another time, a worthy pub or two will undoubtedly be required.

And while there may be many such establishments in England’s second largest city, there’s little question that a crawl along Brindley Place, is just the ticket. The large mixed-used development near the city centre is distinguished by its picturesque, industrial era canal (Birmingham is said have more miles of canals than Venice) and its attendant restaurants, cafés, pubs, shops, and a quaint bridge or two (look for the Black Sabbath bridge honouring the local rock legends if you’re so inclined).

For comparison, think Toronto’s Distillery District on a much grander scale, and with boats – of the canal barge kind, many of which can be chartered, or that may simply sell crafts and wares, such as chocolates, to passersby. At the least, they add another layer of colour to a simply delightful area.

As such, a wander along the canal is a must on any visit to Birmingham, and indeed the area swells with visitors nightly, not least local “Brummies” after-work.

Covering off both sides of the canal, here are three notable venues suitable for pub crawl (and a further non-pub venue for a bit of a variety):

The Malt House

The Malt House: Closest to the city centre end of Brindley Place, the Malt House is also around the corner from the Convention Centre, Birmingham (Utliia) Arena, Symphony Hall, and other nightspots, making for an ideal place for a pre- or post night-out drink. Famous patrons are said to have included Lady Gaga and Bill Clinton. But despite the pedigree, the pub is thoroughly traditional, split across two levels, and offering a welcome outdoor patio to help drink in the sparkling canal-side atmosphere (no pun intended).

The Canal House: Located mid-way along the waterway, Canal House (banner image) is the hottest pub in town, recently named 2022 Pub of the Year by West Midlands Tourism. Overlooking the Gas Street Basin, with dozens of moored boats, the two-storey venue has an intimate upper balcony and a spacious ground level outdoor patio with picnic tables. Inside, it’s barnboard chic, and bright and open, not stuffy. In or out, the venue touts “live music, flowing drinks and delicious food” and is open from noon to 11 p.m. during the week and 1 a.m. on weekends.

Canalside Café

Canalside Café: Across the Basin from Canal House, the compact Canalside Café overflows with flowers, and with its whitewash façade, suggests a Greek island setting rather than the UK’s former industrial heartland. But its real ale bona fides, along with honeyed cider and mulled wine, prove otherwise. The venue, uniquely long and narrow inside, is said to be “the smallest pub in Birmingham,” virtually guaranteeing that patrons will soon be happily chatting up their neighbours, whether they want to or not. And if such things are important to you (as they are to me), the likes of The Who and Kansas were among the soundtrack bands when I stopped by.

And last, but not least:

Jukeboxers: Not a pub, this duelling piano bar is a blast. Located across the canal from the Malt House beneath the arena, rotating musicians play classic pop where everybody knows the words (and feel inclined to sing them). The tunes are non-stop (as the drinks tend to be). There’s no cover, but minimum drinks are required.

On another note

David Green (blue shirt) and friends meet “Ted Lasso” star Jason Sudeikis (hat and ‘stash) on a recent visit to the pub where the hit Apple TV+ show is filmed

What a great and unexpected follow-up to my March 31 column, in which I wrote about The Prince’s Head in Richmond, just outside London – the real-life pub that serves as the film set for The Crown and Anchor venue on the popular “Ted Lasso” TV show. I observed that many Lasso devotees visit the establishment, noting an industry colleague who was soon planning to do so. G Adventures’ David Green immediately “outed” himself in the comment section, and afterwards, sent me a photo of the occasion in which he, and some friends, actually bumped into star Jason Sudeikis, who was taking a break from filming when the group stopped in for a pint.

“Honestly, I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time,” Green told me. “He was so lovely, very sincere and could not have been any nicer. We got up off the bench to ask for a selfie, and he was like, “No boys, sit down let me come and join you. He’s just as nice as Ted Lasso himself… So unexpected, but very, very happy!”
