The stylish yet understated interiors celebrate the character of Melbourne’s urban fabric, from the city’s Hoddle Grid business district and use of tessellated tiles as seen in the custom-designed rugs in the rooms and public spaces respectively to the Victorian era-inspired brickwork in the public spaces. The design also pays homage to Melbourne’s history in wool production and during the Gold Rush through a curated collection of soft furnishings and light fixtures by local designers, setting the stage for guests to continue their personal discovery of the multi-faceted city.

Hyatt Centric Melbourne collaborates with emerging and established local artists, food producers and designers to encapsulate Melbourne’s unique spirit. Key WTTC recommendations will remove current patchwork of policies and processes. Following comprehensive analysis and research, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched a new groundbreaking report which provides clear recommendations to governments and identifies four key digital solutions to restore international mobility.

The inaugural report provides guidance and calls on governments to adopt a more internationally coordinated response to COVID-19 for the Travel & Tourism sector and implement digital solutions that will facilitate the resumption of safe and stress-free international travel.

Following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, WTTC has identified four of the most widely used digital COVID vaccination certificates (EU Digital COVID Certificate, ICAO Visible Digital Seal, DIVOC, and SMART Health Cards), and urges governments to accept these major international standards as proof of COVID-19 status, whilst working towards a single global solution.

The report, ‘Digital Solutions for Reviving International Travel’, shows how international travellers, whether fully vaccinated or testing negative, would then have a globally recognised digital COVID certificate that would enable them to travel freely and safely anywhere in the world.

This critical report addresses the current global challenge posed by the existing patchwork of policies and processes, which are not only complex and unsustainable, but also further hinder the recovery of an already struggling sector.

To address this governments should create their own ‘Digital Travel Portal’, allowing travellers to electronically share their digital COVID vaccination or test certificates with their destination before they begin their journey.

After booking their trip, travellers would simply go to the online portal managed by the destination, where their digital COVID certificate would be uploaded, verifying the status online and in seconds, avoiding confusing processes and long queues.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “WTTC has been calling on governments to implement a globally coordinated response since the beginning of the pandemic. Today’s report offers the key to harmonise and safely reopen international travel.

“It is governments’ responsibility to ensure there is a safe, secure, simple and digital system in place to restore international mobility. WTTC is recommending a single global portal that recognises the main digital passes currently in use worldwide and acts as a one stop shop for travellers and governments.

“We can use the pandemic to leapfrog technologies and allow contactless travel with embedded data on vaccination and testing status”.

Along with WHO, this innovative report and recommendations also draws on guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD) and commitments made by Governments at the G7 and G20 for solutions to revive safe international travel.

According to WTTC’s research, in 2020, when the pandemic brought international travel to an almost standstill, more than 62 million jobs were lost, and the sector’s contribution to the global GDP fell by a staggering US$ 4.5 trillion.

Designed by Meyer Davis, the hotel juxtaposes the city’s traditional architecture and cultural heritage with a unique interpretation of Roman design in a way that is captivating, glamorous, and quintessentially W. An eclectic mix of colourful leather furniture meets stone walls representative of the building’s past, whilst reflective surfaces add a modern, contemporary touch. Boundaries are blurred between public and private spaces as surprises reveal themselves throughout the guest experience – including a hidden door in the bathroom leading to the intimate Parlapiano, a secret garden inspired by one of Borromini’s churches featuring traditional Italian stone complete with kissing benches, lush foliage, topiary and water fountains.

Guests are welcomed into the hotel via the W Lounge which features a stunning skylight and patterned glass window allowing light to flood through the bright and airy open space. Eclectic seating areas are surrounded by elegant sculptures and pieces of art, while black and grey marble flooring run throughout. A head-turning hand-painted mural wraps the walls that look onto chic reflective stainless steel Welcome Desk pods. Painted by Italian artist Costanza Alvarez de Castro, the mural is inspired by Roman gardens and invites discovery by telling the story of the destination’s stunning geography.

At General Assembly UNWTO Points Tourism towards a Greener Future - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, December 6, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Innovation, youth empowerment and tourism and rural development took centre stage as Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez Pérez-Castejón joined UNWTO for the third day of its General Assembly in Madrid.

With the opening days of the most important meeting in global tourism focused on UNWTO’s response to the impacts of the pandemic and uniting Members behind its leadership and Programme of Work, the third day looked ahead to a more sustainable and inclusive future for the sector. Addressing a special Thematic Session, “Building for the Future: Innovation, Education and Rural Development”, Prime Minister Sánchez recognized the importance of the sector for providing opportunities outside of cities, both in Spain and worldwide, while also reaffirming his Government’s support for UNWTO’s mission.

Also addressing delegates, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “If we are serious about ‘leaving nobody behind’, then we must get serious about innovation, about education and about advancing tourism as a tool for rural development. That means empowering youth, supporting tourism talent, and also giving the best solutions the political and financial support they need to scale up and transform our sector.”

Ministers Advance Shared Vision for Sector

The session included a Ministerial Debate on ‘Politics to Foster Tourism for Rural Development’, with insights and inputs from the Ministers of Tourism for Colombia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Paraguay, Slovenia, Tanzania, Spain and Turkey. This was followed by a roundtable on entrepreneurship and innovation in innovation. Representing Members States were Ministers of Tourism from Chile, Greece, Japan, Jordan, Nigeria, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates, while the private sector was represented by winners of the UNWTO Global Rural Tourism Startup Competition. Concluding, a discussion on empowering the tourism leaders of the future, with reference to the UNWTO Students’ League, featured contributions from the Ministers of Tourism for Bulgaria, Lebanon, Maldives and Oman, as well as students themselves.

As well as looking to the future, the General Assembly also celebrated destinations that are already leading the way in making tourism a pillar of rural development and opportunity. From hundreds of entries, 44 villages from 32 countries were named as Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO.

Uzbekistan to host 25th General Assembly

In addition to the Thematic Session, the third day of the 24th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly once again saw Members meet to discuss and approve the Programme of Work for the next two years. On the agenda was the UNWTO leadership’s determination to move the Secretariat closer to Member States, as exemplified by the first Regional Office for the Middle East, opened in June this year and ratified by Member States at the General Assembly. Several Members expressed a wish to host future Regional Offices and so serve as hubs for UNWTO’s work in their regions.

Members voted for Uzbekistan to host the 25th UNWTO General Assembly, scheduled to be held in 2023 and agreed to examining plans to create a new taskforce to ‘Redesign Tourism for the Future’. Additionally, Bali in Indonesia was confirmed as host for World Tourism Day 2022, to be held around the timely theme of ‘Rethinking Tourism’, while the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were similarly confirmed as the host country for World Tourism Day 2023, to be held around the year of ‘Tourism for Green Investments’.

The General Assembly also fulfilled its obligation with regards to elections, with Member States supporting nominations for new members to serve on the World Committee on Tourism Ethics. Furthermore, 17 countries were confirmed to sit on the UNWTO Executive Council from 2021 to 2025, with Puerto Rico to serve as the representative of Affiliate Members.

Last week was all about Omicron, but the travel world continued to turn in other ways, including VIA introducing its new train, Carnival extending commission tier rates, ACV boosting agent self-serve tools, plenty of news from CATO’s recent AGM, and Bermuda loosening entry protocols.

NEWS

All air travellers entering or returning to Canada, except for those coming from the United States, will now need to be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival at the airport and isolate until they get their results, even if they are fully vaccinated against the virus. The new measures come as public health officials around the world warn of the potentially dangerous new Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Effective this week, all travellers to the US, regardless of nationality or vaccination status, will need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test (rapid antigen acceptable) within one day of boarding flights. That compares with three days now for those who have been vaccinated. The White House has shelved tougher options such as requiring post-arrival testing or requiring quarantines upon arrival in the US.

Unvaccinated travellers over the age of 12 officially are now officially barred from boarding a plane or passenger train in Canada, and a negative COVID-19 test no longer serves as a substitute for most people. The strict requirement took effect yesterday after a transition period to the policy announced on Oct. 30 expired.

CATO

In its effort to strive toward being more inclusive, accessible, and representative – and to attract new members – the Canadian Association of Tour Operators (CATO) is reducing membership fees: to $800 for tour operators under $10 million in gross Canada sales; and $2,000 over $10 million. And to further accommodate existing and prospective members during the pandemic, 2022 fees are being deferred until July 1, 2022. CATO also says a new website will be unveiled in February. (See “People” category below for more).

At its recent AGM, CATO also announced the appointment of Stéphanie Bishop as Vice Chair and Joanne Dhue as CATO’s appointed TICO Director. Rounding out the CATO executive team is Brett Walker, Chair; Richard Edwards, Treasurer; and Nicole Bursey, CATO-appointed TICO Director.

RE-OPENING/RE-START

Fiji welcomed back its first tourists in more than 600 days on Dec. 1 after pushing ahead with reopening plans despite the threat posed by the newly detected omicron variant of the coronavirus. More than 75,000 travellers are expected in the next couple of months.

Crowds will once again fill New York’s Times Square this New Year’s Eve, albeit with proof of COVID-19 vaccination required for revellers who want to watch the famous ball drop in person. New York mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed this week that the celebration is still currently scheduled to take place despite the discovery of the Omicron variant.

DELAYED/ CANCELLED

A ban by Japan on new incoming international flight bookings to defend against the new variant of the coronavirus was rescinded only a day after the policy was announced, following criticisms that it was an overreaction.

BY THE NUMBERS

According to the UNWTO Travel Restrictions Report, 46 destinations (21% of all destinations worldwide) currently have their borders completely closed to tourists. Of these, 26 destinations have had their borders completely closed since at least the end of April 2020. A further 55 (25% of all global destinations) continue to have their borders partially closed to international tourism, and 112 destinations (52% of all destinations) require international tourists to present a PCR or antigen test upon arrival. Just four destinations have so far lifted all COVID-19-related restrictions completely (Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Mexico).

AIR
A new Toronto-Bogota route from Avianca took flight Dec. 3, the latest in the carrier’s expansion, which will see 50 new routes by 2013 (having already added 16 this year). The thrice-weekly service takes place Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, departing at 22:50 outbound (YYZ) and returning at 15:20.

Porter Airlines has partnered with Allianz Global Assistance as its new travel insurance provider, offering a variety of insurance products and options for customers. The new travel insurance plans can be included at the time of booking flights or Porter Escape vacation packages. Available plans may also be purchased after booking, through the Porter website or the Allianz call centre.

WestJet has announced route details for its new non-stop service to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), from Calgary. Flights will operate four-times weekly, beginning March 26, 2022, outbound on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, returning a day later in each case.

RAIL

VIA Rail introduced the first trainset of its state-of-the-art new fleet that will serve the Québec City-Windsor corridor beginning late next year. Unveiled in Ottawa, the train is the first of 32 in VIA’s new corridor fleet, which is part of a federally funded billion-dollar modernization program for the national rail company. Key features of the new barrier-free, environmentally friendly train include wider aisles, automatic touchless interior doors, ergonomic seats, and high-speed reliable data connection.

Air Canada Vacations has increased its self-service tools to allow travel agents to manage their client’s bookings through its website. To help agents save time, the tour operator has enhanced its self-serve tools through TripBook for bookings made online. Enhancements include the ability to view and print bookings, access location maps, travel guides and e-documents, add payments and seat selections, cancel bookings, and edit passenger information. Additionally, online submission forms are available for some requests previously only available through the call centre, including requests for cancellations under CareFlexPlus or with a reduced deposit of $50, and requests for a refund under its Price Drop Guarantee.

Nashville, Tenn., is the latest location for the Underground Donut Tour, joining Philadelphia, New York City, Portland, Seattle, Boston and original home, Chicago. New on-site rapid COVID-19 testing has been introduced at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport. In partnership with accredited Bon Voyage Medical, various testing services can be booked, including PCR tests and BC’s first 20-minute PCR test for asymptomatic travellers. Hotel guests also have the option to book an in-room test appointment through Bon Voyage Medical.

Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts  has announced it will be adding a fourth hotel to its collection of rustic mountain lodges in the Canadian Rockies with the acquisition of the Relais & Chateaux Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise. CRMR also owns Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff, Deer Lodge in Lake Louise, and Emerald Lake Lodge on Emerald Lake as well as Urban Butcher and The Lake House in Calgary.

RESORTS

With the re-opening the Riu Sri Lanka following the standstill caused by the pandemic, RIU Hotels & Resorts reports that it is “back up and running” in all 20 countries in which it operates.

Club Med, which opened its first resort in Canada last week in Quebec, announced that it will expand its mountain concept resorts roster with a new property at Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville, Utah. The resort, located about 50 km from Salt Lake City, is slated to open in December 2024, and will be the first US opening in more than 20 years.

CRUISE

Carnival Jubilee (rendering)

Carnival Cruise Line reports its third Excel-class ship – to be named Carnival Jubilee – will be delivered in 2023 and based in Galveston, Texas. The cruise line has also confirmed that all 22 of its US-based ships will be back in guest operations by March 2022.

Meanwhile, Carnival Corp. says its North American brands will maintain travel advisors’ current commission tiers earned through 2023. The five brands – Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn – had previously announced that commission tiers would be maintained through 2022.

FAMS & INCENTIVES

Continuing until Dec. 17, the Jamaica Tourist Board is giving away dozens of daily prizes during holiday contest for Canadian travel advisors. WestJet has announced the appointment of Karl Schuster, as the airline’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Loyalty Officer (CLO). Schuster has over 19 years of loyalty experience, including six years as CEO of Velocity Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia’s award-winning loyalty program. DESTINATIONS

It is not necessary to present vaccination cards, or negative tests for COVID-19 to enter the Dominican Republic. Such requirements are also not necessary at hotels, or to take excursions. Random tests are being carried out at the airports upon entry to the country. To enter establishments outside of hotels, such as bars, restaurants, shops and other closed establishments, the presentation of a vaccination card is required.

Canadians can travel again to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) starting today (Dec. 6) with the resumption of non-stop Air Canada flight service. Weekly flights will depart on Mondays on board Air Canada’s mainline 737Max. Fully vaccinated travellers must arrive with proof of vaccination and a negative PCR test completed no more than 72 hours or three days before arrival. No retests or quarantine are required. The islands’ tourist board has also relaunched a revamped web site at DiscoverSVG.com.

Fully vaccinated visitors to Bermuda now only to need pass an antigen test upon arrival with no follow-up test required on-island, reports the Bermuda Tourism Authority. It is the first significant loosening of COVID-19 border protocols since the island reopened in July 2020.
