WTTC Welcomes Reopening of U.S. Borders

Washington DC, United States, October 19, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO said: “It is great news that the U.S. will reopen its borders to fully-vaccinated travellers from the UK and EU from Nov 8. It has been a long time coming, but the Travel & Tourism businesses on both sides of the Atlantic will be breathing a sigh of relief.

“Visitors from the EU and the UK contributed more than $46 billion to the U.S economy in 2019, showing just how critical this move will be to the U.S recovery.

“WTTC believe governments should axe red lists completely, and instead base the risk on individuals rather than entire countries.”

Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) announced today that Executive Vice President and Global Chief Human Resources Officer David Rodriguez, Ph.D. will step down from his role at the end of October and retire at the end of 2021 after a distinguished 23-year career with the company. The company also announced that long-time Marriott Human Resources executive, Ty Breland, Ph.D., has been named to succeed Rodriguez.

“David’s impact on Marriott – our business, our associates and our culture – has been significant,” said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “He has partnered with our company’s leaders to take Marriott to new heights, always with a focus on the heart of our business – our people. Among David’s many accomplishments, I think the one that has touched the most lives is his work to build our TakeCare culture. David believes that the surest path to sustainable success is to promote the wellbeing of our people. His intuitive sense of what our associates need, coupled with his work analyzing best human resources practices, is the foundation of Marriott’s award-winning approach to associate wellbeing. David will be sorely missed, but his work will live on in Marriott’s people first policies and practices, and the genuine care that exists among our associates across the world.”

David Rodriguez
David Rodriguez

Rodriguez began his career at Marriott in 1998 as a Senior Vice President, Human Resources, where he played a key role in creating the talent and organizational capabilities to fuel Marriott’s international expansion. In 2003, he was appointed Executive Vice President with responsibility for corporate HR as well as for the human resources function for North America Lodging. Rodriguez was named a corporate officer in 2000, and in 2006, he was named to his current role leading Marriott’s global talent strategy. Rodriguez was instrumental in co-founding Marriott’s Board of Directors’ Inclusion and Social Impact Committee (formerly known as the Committee for Excellence), which oversees efforts undertaken by the company to promote associate wellbeing and inclusion and to address environmental, social and governance issues. Rodriguez also serves as Marriott’s Chief Diversity Officer.

Under Rodriguez’s leadership, Marriott is the only hotel company to be named to Fortune’s 100 Best Places to Work For list every year since its inception in 1998, the first hotel company to be ranked #1 by DiversityInc, and the only hotel company to be named to the organization’s Hall of Fame. During Rodriguez’s tenure, Marriott has been recognized by America’s Best Employers for Women (Forbes), 50 Best Companies for Latinas to Work for in the U.S. (LATINA Style), Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality (Human Rights Campaign Foundation) and Best Places for Disability Inclusion (Disability: IN), among many other accolades.

Rodriguez routinely blogs on a range of human resources issues. The proud son of immigrants, he has drawn on his own experiences to drive home the importance of advancing associate wellbeing and inclusive opportunity. In recognition of his career achievements, in 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the highest honor in the field. In 2019, Rodriguez was named HR Executive of Year by Human Resource Executive magazine.

Prior to joining Marriott International, Rodriguez held various human resources leadership positions at Citicorp (now Citigroup). He graduated from New York University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1987 earned a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology. Ty and I both see human resources as critical in creating business value and I know that he will bring an innovative approach to Marriott’s HR practice around the world. I’ve known Ty and worked closely with him for a number of years, and I’m delighted to welcome him to my leadership team.”

ROUND-UP:Oct. 11-15, 2021

1080 494 wttc2

Canadians finally get the green light for cross-border travel; Air Canada is increasing service to India, as is SIA to Singapore from Vancouver; the DR did better than ever in September; and a changing of the (airline) guard in Italy all make this week’s round-up.

NEWS

The US will at last reopen its land borders to non-essential travel starting Nov. 8 ending a 19-month freeze due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new rules will allow fully vaccinated foreign nationals – including those with mixed doses – to enter the US regardless of the reason for travel and includes travellers entering the US by vehicle, rail, and ferry. No testing will be required to enter by land or sea, provided the travellers meet the vaccination requirement, which includes vaccines approved for emergency use by the WHO, which notably includes AstraZeneca vaccine.

Italy’s bankrupt national airline, Alitalia, made its final flights on Thursday (Oct. 14) before formally folding, marking the end of business for the 74-year-old carrier and an end of an era for Italy. The carrier, which had operated in the red for more than a decade, was officially replaced by a new national carrier, ITA, or Italy Air Transport, which launched Friday. The last scheduled flight was AZ1586 from Cagliari to Rome.

RE-OPENING/RE-START

The Indonesian resort island of Bali has reopened for international travellers from 19 countries, although Canada is not one of them. Lucky travellers, mainly from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, will have to be fully vaxxed, test upon arrival, and quarantine for five days at designated hotels at their own expense.

Air Transat has resumed flights to Puerto Plata after several months of forced suspension due to COVID-19. The company operated its first flight from Montreal to Puerto Plata on Oct. 14 and will progressively enhance service from seven Canadian gateways to other DR destinations including La Romana, Punta Cana, and Samana.

AIR

Starting Oct. 31, Air Canada will offer three flights from Montreal to Delhi. Additionally, the airline is increasing frequency to Delhi from Toronto to 10 flights per week beginning Oct. 15. All flights will be operated with modern 298-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The carrier also offers 10 flights a week from Vancouver.

Air France will be expanding its Caribbean Regional Network with two new destinations departing from Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadaloupe, including two weekly flights from Montreal starting on Nov. 23.

Singapore Airlines will begin four-times weekly seasonal service to Singapore from Vancouver starting on Dec. 3. Continuing until Feb. 15, the service is timed over the year-end holiday season and also reflects the inclusion of Canada under Singapore’s Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) arrangements. SIA will operate twice-weekly Seattle-Vancouver-Singapore designated VTL flights (Tues., Fri.), as well as two flights catering to customers who are ineligible to enter Singapore under the VTL arrangement.

DEALS

A cosmopolitan city, gorgeous coffee farms, abundant biodiversity, and pristine beaches are among options that can be discovered for no additional airfare with the relaunch of Copa Airlines’ popular “Stopover in Panama” program. The initiative encourages passengers who travel to any of the airline’s destinations through its Hub of the Americas in Panama to schedule time (up to seven days) for a stop in the country without additional cost in airfare. The “two destinations for the price of one” deal must be reserved at the time of ticket purchase. Canadians can take advantage of the program via Copa Airlines routes out of Toronto and Montreal and applies to all destinations served by the airline across 28 countries across the Caribbean, and Central and South America. HOTELWORLDS - Accor’s Collection of Branded Residences Showcased on New Website - TRAVELINDEXParis, France, October 16, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Accor Group operates 70+ branded residences around the world under 16 brands – from the upper echelon of the luxury market to premium and midscale brands, with an increasing number of highly compelling lifestyle offerings. A new website showcases the group’s impressive collection of branded residence offerings at accor-residences.com

“Accor’s activity in the hotel-branded residences sector is a perfect example of the Group’s entrepreneurialism, innovation and powerful drive to lead the industry in any venture in which it gets involved,” said Jeff Tisdall, SVP of Development, Residential and Extended Stay, Accor. “Accor brands like Raffles and Fairmont have been pivotal in the evolution of branded residences for nearly two decades. Thanks to these trailblazing frontrunners, we’ve been able to apply the expertise we’ve acquired by introducing private residences to a number of our brands in recent years. Accor now offers the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of branded residences, introducing inspiring new visions for homeownership across a wide spectrum of consumer segments.”

Accor’s diverse portfolio of branded residences features privately owned apartments, villas and chalets which are developed, designed, and serviced to the standards of one of its globally recognized brands. Most of Accor’s branded residences are co-located with an Accor-managed hotel, although standalone residential projects are on the rise as well. Branded residences combine exclusivity and the comfort of luxury living, with a comprehensive array of on-demand hotel services. In resort locations, purchasers of branded residences may have the option to participate in a managed rental program, enabling them to generate rental income when not enjoying their home personally.

According to 2021 data from Savills International Development Consultancy, the branded residences sector looks set to maintain its resilience and continue its extraordinary run of growth. The last decade has seen the number of branded residences increase by 230%, adding more than 50,000 units across 356 schemes. Meanwhile, Knight Frank’s Global Buyer Survey 2021 revealed that 39 per cent of residential real estate buyers would be willing to pay a premium for a hotel branded property, citing services and amenities as the top motivation.

“It’s an exciting time as we are seeing an increasing preference among developers and hotel owners for projects that combine a hotel with a private residence component. Consumers are eager to invest in real estate that will be managed by a trusted hotel brand with the knowledge they’ll also have access to an atmosphere and experiences that are near to their heart,” said Agnès Roquefort, Chief Development Officer, Accor. “A key focus of Accor’s development strategy is to accelerate the expansion of our branded residential portfolio, with the right projects in the right markets.”

One of Accor’s most anticipated flagship properties is Raffles London at The OWO and The OWO Residences by Raffles, which will open as a new icon of global hospitality and luxury living. With no two homes alike, eighty-five exclusive residences are being developed within the historic Grade II* listed former Old War Office building in London – a magnificent landmark located between the palaces of British royalty and the halls of British government. Closed to the public for over a century, The OWO has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last five years in order to create the capital’s first Raffles hotel with 120-rooms and suites, a collection of 11 outstanding restaurants and bars, and an immersive spa.

“At The OWO Residences by Raffles, homeowners will have the privilege of living within a rare location, benefitting from a world-renowned hotel on their doorstep, while enjoying the serene privacy of being at home,” said Stephen Alden, CEO Raffles & Orient Express. “Our goal is to elevate the residential experience. Whether it’s a private dinner by a favorite chef; a bespoke art consultation; or a sudden whim for martinis at midnight – our Raffles Butlers and dedicated concierge team will provide residents with all the legendary warmth and intuitive service that generations of Raffles guests have come to know, love and count on.”

In addition to its global leadership in branded residences and luxury hospitality, Accor has established a dominant position in the lifestyle hospitality sector through its joint venture with Ennismore. With more than a dozen lifestyle brands now in its collection, Ennismore currently has seven lifestyle branded residential projects open and operating with another 17 under development, including projects under leading brands such as Mondrian and SLS.

“We are particularly excited by the growth opportunities where private residences and our lifestyle brands intersect,” said Gaurav Bhushan, Co-CEO, Ennismore. “By definition, a lifestyle brand offers a holistic style, culture and values that permeate the entire guest experience from sleeping to socializing, which is what makes residences at brands such as SLS, SO/ and Mondrian so compelling as places where guests want to live, work and play.”

Beam Suntory and Suntory America are both subsidiaries of Suntory Holdings, a global leader in alcohol and non-alcohol beverages, based in Japan. Eight Inc. has been asked to create a state-of-the-art center for collective and individual working— a “soul space” more than a workspace.

Beam Suntory selected Eight Inc. following a competitive RFP process. The company expects Eight Inc.’s human-centric design process and seamless integration of digital technology will result in a workplace where employees can thrive while doing their best work. Eight Inc. was founded in San Francisco, and has five offices across Asia, with a further six across North America, Europe and the Middle East.

And we are honored to go through this process with Suntory Holdings, to create a space where Suntory leaders and other group company representatives can come to collaborate and truly realize the vision of One Suntory.”

The new HQ will be located at 11 Madison Avenue, a masterpiece of Art Deco design and home to renowned restaurant, Eleven Madison Park. It will provide around 100,000 square feet of office space and is scheduled for completion in mid-2022.

Eight Inc. has previously designed workspaces for a wide portfolio of public, private and non-profit organizations, including Felissimo, Guazi, Dubai Tourism, Apple and Donors Choose.

UK Tourism Sector May Only Recover by Third in 2021

500 300 wttc2
UK Tourism Sector May Only Recover by Third in 2021 - TRAVELINDEXLondon, United Kingdom, October 16, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / International visitor spend looks set to plunge by almost 50% on 2020 figures, making the UK one of the worst performing countries in the world 2022 performance could be better but still hangs in the balance. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) says the UK’s Travel & Tourism sector’s year on year recovery may only claw back a third, whilst international travel spending continues to plummet.

Latest research from WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism sector, shows the recovery has been severely delayed by the lack of spending from international visitors.

WTTC blames strict travel restrictions, such as the destructive ‘traffic light’ system, for wreaking havoc on the sector.

Now, despite its highly successful vaccine rollout, the UK is set to record further losses in inbound visitor spending than the previous year, a year in which international travel ground to an almost complete standstill.

At the current rate of recovery, WTTC research shows the UK’s Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to the nation’s economy could rise year on year by just under a third (32%) in 2021, broadly in line with the global average of 30.7%.

However, research conducted by the global tourism body shows the increase has been primarily spurred on by the recent boom in domestic travel, with domestic spending growth set to experience a year on year rise of 49% in 2021.

While this surge in domestic travel has provided a much-needed boost, it will not be enough to achieve a full economic recovery and save millions of jobs still under threat.

The research goes on to show that international spending is predicted to plunge by nearly 50% on 2020 figures – one of the worst years on record for the Travel & Tourism sector – making it one of the worst performing countries in the world.

While other countries, such as China and the U.S., are set to see a rise in international travel spending this year, the UK lags and continues to record significant losses.

Severe travel restrictions, ever-changing policies, and barriers to travel to the UK, such as the current requirement for visitors to take an expensive day two PCR test after arriving in the country, have had their toll.

Last year, the UK Travel & Tourism sector saw 307,000 job losses across the country and research shows that jobs in the sector are set to remain flat this year.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO said: “WTTC research shows that while the global Travel & Tourism sector is beginning to recover, the UK continues to suffer big losses due to continuing travel restrictions that are tougher than the rest of Europe.

“Despite government announcements the UK still has a red list, costly PCR tests and a requirement for day two tests which simply put people off travel. Just as the world opens up the UK has more requirements for the double vaccinated than our neighbours.”

Looking ahead to 2022, WTTC research provides grounds for optimism.

With the right measures and a strong focus on international travel, the UK could see Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP rise by 53% in 2022, resulting in an additional £66 billion to its economy.

International visitor spending could also see a significant increase reaching £29 billion – just 20% below 2019 levels.

Meanwhile, employment growth could see a 14% boost year on year, equating to additional 580,000 jobs in 2022, resulting in over 4.7 million jobs, which is 445,000 above 2019 levels.
