Design and Awards

The elaborately designed entrance door panels honour the traditions of New Zealand’s Māori culture, welcoming people from all corners of the Earth. The magnificent outdoor falcon sculpture alludes to the name of the Villa and the majestic falcons that reside on the property. In 2021 shortly after completion, the NZ Institute of Architects named Falcon Brae Villa the Nelson/Marlborough regional award winner for hospitality and the Registered Master Landscapers bestowed a Landscapes of Distinction Gold Medal. The intricate masonry work features local stone. Furniture fabrics and materials showcase New Zealand artisans with most of the joinery, cabinetry, furniture, carpets and other furnishings sourced and made in NZ. Most of the exquisite art and sculpture throughout the Villa was purchased from local artists and galleries.

Another of the world’s biggest online travel sites, Agoda.com, gave Pimalai a superb “2022 Customer Review Award” score of 9.4 out of 10.

Condé Nast Traveller, one of the world’s leading luxury lifestyle publications, revealed its “Readers’ Choice Awards” for 2022, placing Pimalai in its “Top 15 Resorts in Thailand” list. In addition, the Boutique Hotel Awards 2022 honoured Pimalai with two illustrious titles: “Best Hotel with a View Asia 2022” and “World’s Best Hotel with a View 2022,” which reflect the breath-taking vistas Pimalai’s guests can enjoy from its stunning hillside setting, across Kantiang Bay and the Andaman Sea beyond.

A haven of sustainability, Pimalai is dedicated to operating in complete harmony with the environment and community. This focus on conservation was also recognised in 2022 as the resort achieved its “Green Globe Certificate,” which followed the latest independent audit of its business practices. Finally, Pimalai was presented with the “UNESCO Sustainable Travel Badge,” which underscores the property’s enduring pledge to the pillars and principles of responsible travel.

“We are delighted and deeply humbled to receive such a large number of honours and accolades this year. Small-scale excursions allow explorers to uncover idyllic offshore islands and world-class diving and snorkelling sites, including Koh Haa and Koh Rok, or take a jungle trek to Klong Chak Waterfall, with the chance to visit a giant wild banyan tree. The award-winning Pimalai Spa offers deeply soothing therapies in the midst of the lush jungle, and two outstanding seafront restaurants – Rak Talay and Seven Seas – embrace local and seasonal produce, including organic herbs and southern Thai seafood.

Sustainability is a core element of the Pimalai concept and travellers are invited to take part in many eco-sensitive activities, such as beach cleaning, turtle release programmes, mangrove tours and more. Tanah Gajah Named One of the Best Hotels in Asia

900 719 wttc2

Bali, Indonesia, January 6, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana, moored in the rice paddies of Ubud, has been named one of the “Best Hotels in Asia” in the prestigious LLM (Luxury Lifestyle Magazine) Readers’ Travel Awards 2022. The property was the only hotel in Indonesia to land a coveted spot on the list.

Just over 31,000 people from across the globe voted in this year’s awards. Thirty hotels from Asia were selected and Tanah Gajah claimed spot number 21. The awards cover the most astonishing travel destinations, show-stopping hotels, cruise lines, tour operators and the like across a variety of travel related categories.

The 20-key property is spread out over six lush hectares of land in the uplands of Bali. With roots that go back to the legendary designer and art collector, Hendra Hadiprana, the property has long attracted art and design lovers. It was originally built in the 1980s as a holiday home for Hadiprana and his family and was transformed into a resort in 2004. Though the Hadiprana family relinquished its occupancy of the site as a private family compound, the patriarch’s art collection remained, and numerous sculptures, antiques, and artwork from his travels can be found throughout the property to this day.

The resort offers two dining destinations, The Tempayan and Panen Padi Lounge. The new Tempayan was unveiled in 2020 with a design inspired by wantilan, a Balinese style pavilion. The tapas outlet, Panen Padi Lounge, also debuted during the pandemic. Both locations command prime locations with views over rice paddies and the resort’s hot air balloon experience.

The resort’s spa also takes in the property’s quintessential Balinese landscape, while the main pool is guarded by Ganesh statues and partially flanked by ponds with resident swans. Private pool villas are available for guests who would like to enjoy a dip in privacy.

This latest accolade comes hot on the heels of the property earning recognition in the Condé Nast Traveler annual Readers’ Choice Awards, announced in October. Tanah Gajah was recognized as the 4th Best Resort in Indonesia and 31st Best Resort in the world.

Mondrian Singapore Duxton Unleashes a People-Powered Movement

500 332 wttc2

Mondrian Singapore Duxton Unleashes a People-Powered Movement - TOP25HOTELS.com - TRAVELINDEXSingapore, Singapore, January 4, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / It’s hospitality, but not as you know it at Mondrian Duxton Singapore, where General Manager, maverick and all-round mischief-maker Robert C. Hauck is assembling a team unlike any other to launch something special from Q1, 2023.

Hauck has taken a unique approach to hiring under Mondrian’s ‘unexpected talents’ mantra, scouring the streets and hunting in all the right places for the cream of creative types and inspired individuals from both within and outside the industry to deliver a guest experience with a difference.

Call him a conductor, a disruptor, or one who marches to a different drummer; just don’t call him conventional. Hauck has built a career on breaking new ground and thinking outside the box. Now, this philosophy is given free rein at Singapore’s most eagerly awaited hotel.

“Any hotel is only as good as the people who bring it to life,” says Hauck. “Mondrian has given me the freedom to do something truly innovative and really cast the net wide in taking a new approach to assembling a team. It’s all about creating a place for individuals and personalities with a lot to offer but who may not fit in to a conventional hotel. They might be misfits in a sense, but they’ll fit in here.”

“Here” is Duxton Hill, Singapore’s happening precinct non-pareil, home to the latest addition to the Mondrian family of hotels, joining the brand’s properties in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, London, Cannes, Doha and Seoul. Since its launch in LA in 1996 by Ian Schrager, Mondrian Hotels have been brought to life by the quality of their people and a commitment to creativity, art and the unexpected.

Hauck has begun the hiring process by staring at a blank canvas and painting in bold and unexpected strokes. He has already assembled a core team of over 70 people, ensuring there’s a solid backbone of experienced industry operators to which he has added rebels, dreamers and outsiders, creating a fresh perspective for the hotel, a new energy and a collective entrepreneurial spirit.

Avatar of Hauck’s approach is full body-tattooed Ah Seng, who has turned his life around since leaving prison and has always dreamt of having his own restaurant. He has now been hired to be the manager of Bistro 126, Mondrian’s staff restaurant at their hip Shophouse office space. Or take Raymond Leong, 64, senior sales manager of an events and cruise company, laid off during the pandemic, who reinvented himself as a Grab driver, now hired as a quality and training manager, a job he always aspired to doing.

Unexpected talents with diverse backgrounds can be found everywhere. An elderly cleaner who has three diplomas in marketing repurposed as public area supervisor and director of inspiration. An executive assistant who had been enjoying a retirement baking sourdough bread but got bored, after a career in strategic brand planning for brands that are household names. Social media and visual marketing tyros, fresh graduates, a former Olympian athlete, a luxury fashion expert and award-winning bartenders. These are among the passionate and talented characters given another chance to find their calling.

But how to find them? Hauck’s team can be seen handing out ‘We like your style’ cards to begin a conversation. “My motto is chase talent, don’t wait,” he says. “From tattoo conventions to alternative gigs, from art happenings to theatre and sport, it’s about casting the net wide and knowing true talent when you see it. This will be the essence of what we are bringing to the market at Mondrian Singapore Duxton.”

About Mondrian
The debut of Mondrian Singapore Duxton in Southeast Asia follows that of Mondrian Seoul Itaewon in 2020, which signaled the brand’s entry to Asia Pacific. The brand’s portfolio of seven hotels will more than double its footprint by 2023, with upcoming openings in Bordeaux, Cannes and Australia’s Gold Coast to name a few. Mondrian is more than a hotel: it’s a way of travel. Known for its groundbreaking design and progressive programming it is a “must” destination for locals or travelers. Mondrian is always at the heart of the most exciting cultural scenes in the world, serving up innovation and creativity for everyone. Mondrian provides a playful framework so that guests and locals alike can immerse themselves in the culture of each city it inhabits. Design is at the center of the Mondrian experience with hotels designed by some of the world’s most famous architects and designers, including Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. Mondrian is part of Ennismore, a creative hospitality company rooted in culture and community, with a global collective of entrepreneurial and founder-built brands with purpose at their heart. Formed in 2021, Ennismore is a joint venture with Accor, which holds a majority shareholding.

Banyan Hua Hin Unveils Conscious Living Inspired Villa Suasana Project

500 284 wttc2

Banyan Hua Hin Unveils Conscious Living Inspired Villa Suasana Project - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25VILLAS.comHua Hin, Thailand, January 3, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Villa Suasana integrates a multitude of sustainable solutions into the project in the Banyan Residences community. The world is changing. Urbanisation is giving way to escapism as a rising number of city dwellers seek a healthy, active lifestyle, away from the traffic and tension of their metropolitan lives. In line with this rising trend, Banyan Hua Hin is fast-becoming one of the country’s most desirable places to live, work and relax.

Nestled between the mountains and the sea in Hua Hin, on Thailand’s gulf coast, the exclusive community of luxury residences, pool villas, world-class golf and medical facilities has a proven track record of helping Bangkok’s residents to realise their dreams of a new life. Now, the company is building on its successful formula.

The launch of Villa Suasana, an all-new residential concept dedicated to natural and sustainable living, will further enhance Banyan Hua Hin’s status as an appealing destination for a generation of “conscious” urbanites, executives and entrepreneurs.

Villa Suasana is specifically designed for individuals, couples and families who want to experience a sense of freedom and have a more sustainable impact on the planet. Named after the Balinese word for “atmosphere,” these luxurious two- and three-bedroom pool residences offer 180 to 303 square metres of naturally-lit space, with bright and spacious interiors, contemporary furnishings, shady terraces and a refreshing private pool.

The new concept also puts sustainability at its core, with integrated eco solutions including solar panels, salt-water pools and pure water filters. And under a limited-time offer, every new owner will receive two complimentary Segway Ninebot KickScooter F25s – the ultimate clean, green way to get around the Banyan Hua Hin community.

As a further endorsement of its quality, Banyan Residences has been named as the “Best Housing Development – Hua Hin” at the PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards 2022. Judged by a group of industry specialists, the award was based upon the contemporary design of the villas, their liveability and surrounding facilities, which include the highly-acclaimed 18-hole Banyan Golf Club and onsite Be Well Medical Center. Banyan Hua Hin’s senior management team collected the accolade at a black-tie gala ceremony at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok.

“In the post-pandemic era, society has evolved and people are prioritising their personal health, wellness and sustainability above all else. As flexible, remote working becomes the norm, an increasing number of executives are choosing to avoid the hecticness and time-loss caused by a daily commute in heavy traffic. Bangkok families are spending more of their free time closer to nature and enjoying the beach life. With Banyan Hua Hin and Villa Suasana, business and leisure come together amid uplifting scenery and pure air. It’s a healthy, active and truly inspirational environment,” said Tjeert Kwant, Group CEO of Banyan Thailand.

The award marks the latest vote of confidence for Banyan Hua Hin, from buyers and the industry alike. The community experienced a surge in sales throughout the pandemic as urban residents sought a healthy active lifestyle outside of Bangkok and international long-stay visitors returned in healthy numbers.

Villa Suasana prices start from THB 9.5 million.

AC Hotels by Marriott®, the design-led lifestyle brand part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of 30 extraordinary brands, today announced its brand debut in Greater China with the opening of AC Hotel by Marriott Suzhou. Featuring 135 guestrooms, the new hotel has been expertly refined and crafted to deliver The Perfectly Precise Hotel™ experience right in the heart of the picturesque, ancient water town of Suzhou.

“We are excited to bring AC Hotels by Marriott to Greater China, making it the seventh brand in our Select Brands portfolio in the region, offering diverse experiences for travelers and locals alike,” said Matthew Boettcher, Vice President and Global Brand Leader, Distinctive Select Brand Portfolio. “Suzhou is renowned for its postcard-perfect water channels and canals, home to some exquisitely designed Classical Chinese Gardens that strike a balance of function and beauty, making it the ideal destination to debut the design-driven AC Hotels brand in the country. AC Hotel by Marriott Suzhou will create a seamless guest experience that attracts discerning travelers, providing everything they need and nothing they don’t.”

Known as “Venice of the East,” Suzhou is an ancient water town filled with elegant waterways, quaint alleyways, and peaceful pavilions. AC Hotel by Marriott Suzhou is situated in the heart of the city’s historic Gusu District, home to a rich cultural legacy best exemplified by its Classical Chinese Gardens inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Art and cultural seekers can also visit the many other heritage sites, such as the Lion Grove Garden, the Humble Administrator’s Garden, and the iconic Suzhou Museum. The hotel will also provide easy access to public transportation, with Beisi Pagoda Metro Station within walking distance and Suzhou Railway Station just 2.5 kilometers away. Meanwhile, the 30-minute high-speed train from Shanghai and Suzhou makes it convenient for guests to travel between the two cities.

Adding a serene and minimalist touch to the hotel, the exterior design takes cues from traditional Suzhou architecture with its use of whitewashed walls, dark gray clay tile roofs, and folds of geometries. As for the interior design, the hotel has focused on a careful blend of contemporary and traditional elements, allowing for an authentic yet modern decor that belongs to Suzhou. Upon stepping into the hotel lobby, an exquisite atmosphere greets guests, whose eyes will be drawn to a number of art pieces that pay homage to the new Suzhou Museum, designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei.

The hotel is home to 135 guest rooms and suites, including five garden rooms featuring a private outdoor garden. Drawing inspiration from Suzhou’s classical gardens, the sleek and modern guest rooms are decorated with silk paintings inspired by the ancient city map, creating an elegant and harmonious ambiance. All rooms are well-equipped with thoughtful amenities, such as a 55-inch, high-definition, LCD television, a walk-in shower, and complimentary, high-speed Wi-Fi.

The hotel features a range of collaborative spaces, including the AC Kitchen, an all-day dining restaurant offering various buffet options, which plays tribute to the Spanish roots of AC and offers an extensive a la carte menu serving local delicacies and Spanish-inspired dishes. The signature AC Lounge, with an outdoor terrace, is an ideal place for guests to enjoy al-fresco dining, relax or work during the day. By night, the comfortable and elegant space transforms into a bustling bar, allowing guests to unwind and socialize over locally sourced beers, wines, and cocktails infused with Jiangnan ingredients, highlighting the signature AC Gin Tonic experience.

The hotel houses a 50-square-meter multi-functional space, providing versatility for banquets and business meetings, catering to different guest needs. In addition, the hotel offers a 24-hour fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing guests to maintain their exercise routine while on the road.

“We are delighted to celebrate the opening of AC Hotels’ first property in Greater China. Blending AC’s signature design and concept with Suzhou-style aesthetics, we are proud to showcase the city’s uniqueness to our guests,” said Vincent Li, General Manager of AC Hotel by Marriott Suzhou. “We look forward to welcoming guests to our purposefully designed spaces and curated experiences the brand is known for.”

Accor Welcomes Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium to its Network - VISITTHAILAND.net - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, December 30, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Accor Hotels has signed a management agreement for a Grand Mercure hotel in the heart of Thailand’s vibrant capital city. This popular hotel, which has been welcoming the world’s travellers for over 26 years, will be refurbished and rebranded as Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium, creating localised guest experiences aligned with the vision of Accor’s premium brand.

Perfectly located on New Phetchaburi Road in downtown Bangkok, just a short distance from Sukhumvit Road, the city’s most dynamic commercial and retail district, and easily accessible via Phetchaburi MRT subway station, the hotel is ideal for business and leisure visitors alike.

The 568 rooms and suites offer panoramic city views and premium amenities, including business desks, locally inspired artworks and bathrooms with rain showers and bathtubs. Eight room categories, ranging in size from 30 to 129 square metres, ensure plenty of choice for corporate guests, couples and families.

The hotel will offer an array of leisure facilities including an outdoor swimming pool and sundeck, a fully-equipped fitness centre and serene spa, and diverse dining options including a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, an all-day dining destination, pool bar and deli. For meeting planners, the hotel has a ballroom and a selection of meeting rooms that can host up to 350 people for corporate and social events.

Grand Mercure’s vision for a new style of international hospitality began in 1997. A group of hoteliers wanted to provide sophisticated locals with premium hotel standards while being respectful of their values. The first Grand Mercure hotel opened in São Paulo and since then the brand has blossomed around the globe, satisfying the growing desire to honour cultural identities.

“Just as no two countries are completely alike, no two Grand Mercure hotels are completely alike,” says Garth Simmons, Chief Executive Officer for Accor, Southeast Asia, Japan & South Korea. “Each property is tailored to offer a uniquely local spirit, where the community can feel at home and visitors can discover the unexpected. I am proud to welcome Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium to our network, becoming our fourth Grand Mercure in Thailand. This signing demonstrates the confidence that owners continue to place in Accor’s renowned brands, local knowhow and experts spanning every function of the hotel business.”

To honour each region’s way of life, Grand Mercure properties bring each country’s culture and customs to life for today’s travellers. By showcasing the destination’s authentic rituals, each hotel inspires local guests to rediscover their culture and travellers from afar to gain a deeper understanding of their destination – all while enjoying outstanding international premium services.

“Our hotel has been one of Bangkok’s most popular places to stay ever since it first opened in 1996. Now, by harnessing the global strength and premium, local style of the Grand Mercure brand, we are embarking on an exciting new era of hospitality. I am confident that this new partnership with Accor will delight our returning clientele and help us attract many new guests in future,” said Khushroo Wadia, Executive Director of Maxwin Builders Ltd., the owning Company of the Hotel.

Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium is easily accessible via road and rail, including Bangkok’s elevated expressways and MRT subway network. Makkasan Station, the downtown terminal of the Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is just a short distance away.

The Grand Mercure network consists of more than 55 hotels in 12 countries worldwide. Its efficient size allows the brand to focus on each individual property. The brand boasts a pipeline of 30 new hotels and 7,200 rooms due to open in the coming years.

These hotels join the growing number of properties around the world displaying the brand’s design transformation, totaling more than 30 properties by the end of the year.

“Following the transformation of four incredible hotels across Greater China, we’re excited to welcome these four additional hotels in the region entering a new chapter showcasing the brand’s new vision,” said Amanda Nichols, Global Brand Leader, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. “As Sheraton continues to inspire new journeys into the new year, we look forward to welcoming guests to enjoy all the familiar comforts of the brand, but with fresh, contemporary updates along with new, exciting guest-programming experiences.”

The new approach draws on the brand’s roots as a community hub with places to connect and be productive. The design balances timelessness with a fresh and modern feel, creating an environment where guests feel comfortable and at ease whether working, meeting, or relaxing. Built with its global, productivity-focused guest in mind, Sheraton’s new elevated food and beverage philosophy and seamless technology integration are additional focal points of the brand’s transformation.

Sheraton Xi’an Chanba
With proximity to many places of interest in Xi’an, Sheraton Xi’an Chanba offers 228 residential-style guest rooms and suites with serene, bright spaces and captivating views over the city.

The soon-to-open new hotel takes its design cues from the city’s history and culture, especially that of the Tang Dynasty. The lobby art installation made of metal, ceramics, and resin glass were inspired by lamps lit in celebration of the local Lantern Festival. A host of public spaces and amenities have been created, including the brand’s signature Community Table. The hotel offers elevated food and beverage experiences with a bar and three restaurants. Part bar, part coffee bar, part market, &More by Sheraton transitions guests seamlessly from day to night with food & beverage options that are locally sourced, easy to enjoy while working, and customizable to accommodate all tastes and time schedules. Sitting on a 575-mile coastline in Xiangshan, Sheraton Ningbo Xiangshan Resort lays claim to some of the area’s most beautiful settings. The property is the first resort in the Asia Pacific region to bring Sheraton’s design transformation to life. The ingenious interior design incorporates elements that denote the distinctive rock formations in the area and the local fishing heritage. In the lobby, the design pays homage to Xiangshan’s culture by utilizing black and white colors to form a dramatic visual contrast, showcasing the aesthetics of fishing nets and wood carvings that are unique to the area. The resort offers 270 spacious and modern guest rooms and suites, most of which boast views of the sea or mountains through large floor-to-ceiling windows, with selected guest rooms featuring a large outdoor balcony.

Sheraton Nanjing Kingsley Hotel & Towers commands a prime location in Nanjing’s financial and commercial center – the Xinjiekou business zone. The renovation was well-thought to combine the hotel’s over 20 years of history into a design that matches the lifestyle of today’s travelers, with elements that reinterpret local cultures and arts, such as the staircase handrails and screens that create a modern rendition of the local Jinling Folding Fans. Equipped with the brand’s signature Community Table and tech-enabled Studios, the expansive lobby has been repositioned as an open, shared space, aiming to promote social interaction and collaboration. It is also a reflection of Sheraton’s commitment to creating places where guests from around the world can come together. It welcomes guests to 70 newly renovated guest rooms and suites as part of the first phase of guest rooms refresh. Additional facilities include the all-day dining restaurant Daily Social, YUE Chinese restaurant, Danny’s Irish Restaurant & Pub, the Sheraton Towers Lounge, and &More by Sheraton, where guests can enjoy a cup of Julius Meinl, Austria’s national treasure coffee originated from 1862.

These four properties join Sheraton Guangzhou Hotel, Sheraton Mianyang, Sheraton Zhaoqing Dinghu, and Sheraton Chengdu Pidu as transformed Sheraton-branded properties in Greater China.
