IAGTO Awards Recognition for Ba Na Hills Boosts Vietnam Golf Coast

IAGTO Awards Recognition for Ba Na Hills Boosts Vietnam Golf Coast - TRAVELNEWSHUB.comCentral Vietnam’s status as an elite golf hub was reaffirmed last month as Bana Hills Golf Club was named “Golf Course of the Year in Vietnam” at the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Awards.

With championship layouts designed by legends such as Luke Donald (Ba Na Hills Golf Club), Sir Nick Faldo (Laguna Golf Lang Co), and Colin Montgomerie (Montgomerie Links), Central Vietnam has emerged as one of Asia’s top destinations for play.

The region’s glowing reputation was burnished once again at the 2024 IAGTO Awards held in Abu Dhabi as Ba Na Hills Golf Club added to its string of honours.

“We are truly proud to be named ‘Golf Course of the Year in Vietnam’,” said Gary Dixon, General Manager of Ba Na Hills Golf Club. “This award not only highlights the club’s achievements but also puts a positive spotlight on the entire Vietnam Golf Coast, reinforcing Central Vietnam’s status as one of Asia’s premier golf tourism destinations.”

With its vibrant cities, incredible beaches and hotels complemented by an enviable infrastructure, the region is regarded by many observers as the continent’s most complete golf destination: a fact reflected in a multitude of accolades for its clubs.

Laguna Golf Lang Co and Ba Na Hills Golf Club, linchpins alongside Montgomerie Links of the Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) — a destination marketing organization that links Central Vietnam’s best signature golf layouts — were named among the top 11 golf resorts in Asia last year.

The two clubs were among the superstars at the top of the leaderboard in a list compiled by Golf.com, one of the world’s leading golf titles, encompassing top golf destinations in Korea, China, Thailand and Indonesia. Not only were the two clubs ranked among the cream of the region’s golf resorts, but their inclusion in the Asia list also guaranteed them spots in the overall Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World standings.

“Vietnam’s reputation as a golf destination has never been brighter and we are confident that the cluster of courses in the centre of the country represents the jewel in its crown,” said Stephen Banks, Director of Golf at Laguna Lang Co. “The courses offer a wide variety of experiences to golfers. You can play seaside coastal golf one day and enjoy terrific mountain vistas the next day.”

Central Vietnam’s burgeoning reputation on the global stage was reflected during 2023, a year that saw the total number of rounds played on its courses reach an all-time high.

The key players in the VGC are gunning for further accolades to boost the area with Montgomerie Links, Ba Na Hills Golf Club, and Laguna Golf Lang Co all nominated for the title of “Vietnam’s Best Course” at the 2024 World Golf Awards.

“Success breeds success, so it is fantastic for all of us that the clubs in Central Vietnam are earning wider recognition,” said Le Vo Hoang Van, club manager at Montgomerie Links where Colin Montgomerie has fashioned old-world design elements into a challenging layout. “With all these internationally accoladed golf courses in one place, it’s a great chance for golfers from all over the world to come and decide which is their favourite.”

Tapori, A New Culinary Landmark Opens in Bangkok

752 420 wttc2

Bangkok, April 11, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / From Mumbai’s streets to the Himalayas, Tapori on Sukhumvit 47 offers a menu that goes beyond clichéd Indian cuisine, showcasing the rich tapestry of the country’s gastronomic heritage. Tapori promises to take diners on an exciting roller coaster ride around India with a menu that showcases flavours from across its length and breadth.

Tapori, Hindi slang for ‘wanderer’ or loveable, street-smart rascal, reflects the journeys of the chef patron, who compiles authentic dishes from across India that are largely undiscovered by Indian and global palates.

India’s vast landscape is matched only by its incredible diversity; 28 states and eight union territories, each region with its own unique culture, language and culinary traditions. Food in India is incredibly diverse and regionally specific and is shaped by a history of invasions, trade connections, and the varied religious and cultural practices of its inhabitants. For far too long, Indian restaurants globally have relied heavily on the Mughal-Punjabi-Frontier recipe book, resulting in a clichéd representation of the multi-hued gastronomic heritage of the country. Tapori plans to change that. So expect the unexpected.

THE FOOD
Tapori’s menu, a mosaic of India’s diverse culinary landscape, is the culmination of extensive travels and research inviting diners to explore the lesser-known treasures of India. Handpicked from every region or community, these traditional recipes tell a story on your plate, each a vibrant expression of the country’s complex flavours and spices. The menu, thoughtfully divided into small and large plates, is designed for communal eating. Diners can order in any combination, creating their own unique experience, much like a family dinner table. There’s no room for typical fare like dal makhani, butter chicken or idli-sambar here; Tapori is designed for adventurers looking to discover an unseen India.

The small plates offer dishes such as Kala Chana Ghugni or flattened rice and black chickpeas from Bihar, Siddu (stuffed dumplings) from Himachal Pradesh, Andhra-style squid, scallop ceviche from Goa, Tabak Maas (lamb chops) from Kashmir, Kheema Ghotala (ground beef in spices) from Mumbai, and Tripura’s pork salad – Wahan Mosdeng. For the larger plates, the menu presents a taste of regional favourites like Natukozhi Pulusu, a rustic chicken dish from Telangana, the tangy Masur Tenga (fish curry) of Assam, the famous Kerala Beef Chilli Fry, Lobster Assad from Pondicherry and Jadoh, a pork-rice dish that’s breakfast to the Khasi tribe in country’s Northeast.

Tapori doesn’t do ‘lazy’ vegetarian either, with protein swapped out for vegetarian alternatives. Instead, it features traditional vegetarian dishes like the Gujarati mixed root vegetable dish, Undhiyu served with fenugreek and millet flatbread, potato and banana blossom Mochar Chop from West Bengal, Gobhi Musallam (grilled cauliflower) from Uttar Pradesh, and the hearty Rajasthani lentil and millet porridge, Bajra Khichda. And this is just the beginning of the food coma tours diners can design for themselves.

Desserts become an alchemist’s playground for Tapori’s pastry chef, such as the Bun-Maska ice cream, a homage to Mumbai’s Irani cafes. These cafes are known for their simple yet iconic bun maska, a buttered bun enjoyed with tea. This ice cream reimagines that experience, offering a delightful mix of creamy sweetness and buttery richness in every bite.

Yet another example is Lonavala Chocolate Fudge, a trip down memory lane to the hill station of Lonavala, famous for its chikki (peanut brittle) and chocolate fudge. At Tapori, it takes the shape of a delightful tart filled with old-fashioned chocolate almond fudge and a side of house-made vanilla ice cream.

THE TEAM
Heading this intriguing narrative is culinary storyteller and chef-owner Rohit Sharma. With a background in hospitality, he has set up over 100 food and beverage projects through his consultancy R4 Hospitality. These include the popular Maroon Room and Freemasons Brew Works in Guwahati (Assam), and his own Joint Café in Gurgaon (Delhi NCR). Rohit conceptualises restaurants end-to-end, overseeing not just the initial concept but also the design and curation of the decor, and of course, the creation of the menus. His projects reflect the vast diversity of Indian cultures and cuisines.

His latest restaurant project, Tapori, is his food dream come to life, a meticulously crafted concept reflecting his deep passion and knowledge of Indian cuisine, embodying a love for tradition and innovation. To develop this concept, research involved traversing India for traditional recipes to create a menu that captures the travels of ‘tapori’ across the country. This fact-finding mission led to a rich database of 300 dishes, with 29 making it to the first iteration of the menu.

“Culinary art is not just about cooking; it’s about telling a story that resonates with the soul,” says Sharma. “At Tapori, we journey across India, reaching out to grandmothers and mothers, the guardians of our kitchen traditions. We explore the tapestry of flavours that define our heritage for a menu that is a tribute to the authentic recipes passed down through generations. Each dish represents one of India’s states or communities and is a chapter in the story of the food culture of India. With every bite, we invite you to discover an India that’s unseen, unexplored, and unforgettable.”

Helping Rohit finalise his dream is Chef Anirban Chowdhury, his Delhi-based R&D chef from R4 Hospitality, as well as pastry chef Swati Harsha, who created the desserts for the menu.

THE DESIGN
The restaurant’s commitment to showcasing India’s diversity and vibrancy extends beyond its food and into its space. The interiors reflect the owner’s vision, seamlessly blending modern elements with traditional Indian accents for an elegant and warm ambiance that feels both intimate and sophisticated.

The interiors, envisioned by the owner, blend modern elements with traditional Indian accents, for an elegant and warm setting that is both intimate and sophisticated. Past the 200-year-old wooden door brought in from Rajasthan that leads to the sprawling bungalow, the decor pays homage to India’s rich artistic heritage, featuring a collection of artwork that draws from the country’s vast cultural traditions. The bold, black and white floor sets a striking foundation, harmonising with the warm tones of woven leather chairs and marble-esque tables that glow invitingly from within. Standing tall are cinnabar columns evoking Indian spices, while a parade of colourful Indian elephants punctuates the aesthetic.

From the geometric patterns of Warli art and the tribal motifs of Bastar to the detailed narratives of Madhubani and the vibrancy of Pichwai art, each storied art form celebrates India’s unique visual language. A towering hand-cut mirror mosaic of a preening peacock and a 32-foot long oil on canvas of the backwaters of Kerala animate the space, bridging the gap between contemporary design and traditional artistry.

Outside, the terrace offers a tranquil dining escape, seamlessly integrating with nature to the backdrop of murals that capture the essence of Indian storytelling through vibrant colours and patterns.

Tapori is more than just a dining destination; it is a journey across India, offering an experiential plunge into the richness of Indian culture and heritage through its flavours and designs.

Luxurious Resort Opens Exquisite Old-World Bar By The Beach

900 600 wttc2

Luxurious Resort Opens Exquisite Old-World Bar By The Beach - HOTELWORLDS.comThe Anam Mui Ne, an Indochine-era inspired resort in Vietnam’s popular beach town Mui Ne, has opened a quaint new bar that pays homage to the intimate Saigon bars of yesteryear.

The 1.2 hectare resort, which is the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) portfolio’s only Vietnamese property, this month unveiled the new watering hole, aptly dubbed Saigon Bar, on some of the resort’s most inspiring ground overlooking Mui Ne beach.

Adjacent to the resort’s 266sqm saltwater infinity swimming pool and immaculate lawn, Saigon Bar is situated at the other end of the beach to Lang Viet Restaurant & Bar, bookending the resort’s best view over the waterfront.

Softly lit with caged lanterns and candles, the bar is fashioned from hardwood sourced from sustainably cultivated forests in Vietnam’s Nam Dinh province and bedecked with customized encaustic tiles, evoking an atmosphere of old-world elegance.

Fronted by a grey cobble-stone terrace with a handful of outdoor wooden bar tables flanked by rattan stools, Saigon Bar’s interior is home to cozy rattan chairs clustered in semi-circles and a bar featuring woodwork that took craftspeople months to complete. Greenery cascades down the bar’s exterior from wooden plant boxes fastened to a balcony above.

The bar’s shelves are lined with all sorts of boutique spirits from Vietnam and around the world, such as Ho Chi Minh City-based Lady Trieu’s craft gins including ‘Dalat Flowerbomb’, ‘Mekong Delta Dry’, ‘Hoi An Spice Road’ and ‘Sapa Citrus Tea’.

Saigon Bar’s extensive drinks menu includes an array of spirits, beers, wines, signature cocktails, large cocktails shared between four people and “choose your own” mojitos, daiquiris, and margaritas. Surprises including ‘The Anam Penicillin’, comprising Whisky Glenmorangie 10, whisky Famous Grouse, whisky Laphroaig 10, chamomile infused Quinta do Noval 10 Tawny Port, clarified lemon juice, honey and ginger syrup, and ‘Smokey Frangipani Blossom’ made up of Frangipani infused Haku vodka, Ricard, apple juice, celery juice, clarified lemon juice and maple syrup.

Vietnamese coffee, milk shakes, loose green and black leaf teas, freshly squeezed juices, home-made iced teas, and kombucha with all sorts of health benefits concocted on the resort’s grounds are also on offer.

In addition to ‘smoothie bowls’ packed with different fruits, the bar also serves tapas including the likes of a cheese and charcuterie platter, a grilled prawn salad, beef satay skewers, and salted and spicy crispy pork skin. The selection of desserts ranges from ice-cream and sorbet to chocolate raspberry cheesecake and bubble tea panna cotta.

“Our Saigon Bar may be new but when you set foot inside, you feel like you’re stepping back in time, to a charming bar in bygone Saigon’s labyrinthine alleyways, where the atmosphere is almost as palpable and the unique beverages and tapas we’ve concocted,” said the resort’s manager Ye Chang Sheng (Peter).

About The Anam Group
After the auspicious debut of The Anam Cam Ranh in 2017, the independently owned and operated The Anam Group celebrated the grand opening of its second property, The Anam Mui Ne, in January 2023.

With “Indochine Charm” and “Modern Luxury” as its watchwords, the group blends colonial-era aesthetics and attentive Vietnamese service with modern comforts and convenience. “The Anam” today is a reference to another name, “An Nam”, which was the name of Central Vietnam during the French Indochina era.

The Anam Cam Ranh overlooks 300 metres of beachfront on Vietnam’s scenic Cam Ranh peninsula, which averages more than 300 sunny days per year. The luxurious five-star resort boasts 77 villas and 136 rooms and suites. The Anam Cam Ranh features a French-inspired fine dining restaurant, all-day dining restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant and bar, a classical bar, a beach club, in-room dining, a 10 treatment-room spa, indoor and outdoor movie theatres, three capacious swimming pools, ballroom, conference rooms, recreation and fitness centre, a tennis court, yoga room and deck, kids club, putting green, gift shop and more.

Like its predecessor The Anam Cam Ranh, The Anam Mui Ne’s design is also an echo out of Vietnam’s Indochine era. Situated in southern Vietnam’s popular beach town Mui Ne, the 1.2 hectare beachfront resort affords spectacular ocean vistas and features 127 elegant rooms and suites, including seven 142sqm suites with private pools and a 122sqm presidential suite with an extra room for the bodyguards. Its dining landscape comprises an all-day dining restaurant and grill, beachside restaurant and bar, and lobby bar. A five-treatment room spa, two vast swimming pools, a ballroom, conference rooms, water sports center, fitness center, yoga room, kid’s club and gift shop are among the resort’s host of world-class facilities.

Conceptualised at the “Ignite Thailand’s Tourism Workshop” held in Bangkok on 15 March 2024 with participation from public and private agencies, the strategies include elevating the tourist experience, promoting must-do activities, raising awareness of hidden-gem destinations, developing intra-regional travel linkage with neighbouring countries, and hosting more world-class events.

Tourism and Sports Minister, Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said the five strategies aligned with the government’s policy to make Thailand a global aviation hub, handling more than 150 million air travellers annually by 2030.

“In 2025, Thailand’s tourism is set to experience growth on an unprecedented scale. The new ‘Up Level, Add Story, Create Value’ concept will enhance every step of the tourist journey across all touchpoints,” Minister Sudawan said.

Outlines for the five strategies include:

1: Elevating tourist experience

Steps will be taken to promote Thailand’s tourism information and promotion to allow tourists to plan an informed trip to the country.

Existing measures will be strictly enforced to ensure tourist safety and convenience, including accessible ‘Tourism for All’, one-stop Tourist Police Hotline 1155, and universal coverage for emergency patients.

Travel facilitation will be further enhanced in the next three months. This includes improving queue management in airports, raising hotel standards, extending visa-free entry to more countries, enhancing tourist safety and security measures, and ensuring good maintenance and hygiene in public restrooms.

In the next six months, the government plans to push for the amendment of related tourism laws, including hotel regulations, alcohol restrictions, import duties on mega-event equipment, and VAT refund requirements.

2: Five must-do activities

Must Beat (Muay Thai) highlights four unique styles of ancient Thai boxing and presents the sport as a form of cardio exercise.

Must Eat (Thai food) promotes Thai kitchen to the world with 77 local dishes and 77 local desserts.

Must Seek (Thai culture) tells the story of a faith-based journey, cultural superstitions, and folklore culture.

Must Buy (Thai fabric) partners with world-renowned designers to turn Thai fabrics into fashion items.

Must See (Thai shows) showcases impressive traditional and contemporary performances.

3: Travel linkage between major and hidden-gem destinations

Promotion of travel linkage between well-established cities and hidden gems in lesser-known destinations is set to better balance the distribution of tourist arrivals and tourism income between urban and rural areas.

Recommended routes include Lanna Culture (Chiang Mai – Lamphun – Lampang), UNESCO Heritage Trail (Sukhothai – Kamphaeng Phet – Nakhon Ratchasima), NAGA Legacy (Nakhon Phanom – Sakon Nakhon – Bueng Kan), Paradise Islands (Trang – Satun), and The Wonder of Deep South (Pattani – Yala – Narathiwat).

4: Hub of ASEAN

Plans include promoting intra-region travel and helping to enhance the development and promotion of ASEAN as a single tourism destination, introducing the ASEAN Pass in partnership with airlines, and raising awareness of cross-border QR payment.

5: Word Class Event Hub

Incentives will be launched to attract major festivals, concerts, and events to Thailand, thus establishing the country as a centre of world-class events.

Upcoming world-class events include Summer Sonic Bangkok 2024, KAWS Arts, Moto GP, and Volleyball World Championship.

Minister Sudawan said, “These five strategies are planned to ignite Thailand to a tourism hub status to attract more tourists to the country and spending more time and budget, further boosting Thailand as the number one tourist destination.”

From 1 January to 1 April 2024, Thailand recorded 9.4 million visitor arrivals, representing a 42 per cent increase over the same period in 2023.
