In last week’s news, Transat posted a record third quarter, Air Canada paid back some government debt, Britain looked ahead to record visitation numbers from Canada, Sunwing unveiled its annual ‘Best of the Best List,’ and ACTA revealed a long-discussed name change.

NEWS

Transat reported its highest net income ever for a third quarter and turned a profit for the first time since 2019, prompting a brighter financial forecast for the year. Healthy demand for leisure travel boosted revenue per passenger by 29% compared with four years earlier, an indication of fare hikes on tickets to Europe. To meet the sustained demand, Transat plans to expand capacity by nearly a quarter next year, increasing its fleet to about 40 planes.

TICO says it will launch a broad and comprehensive consultation process with registrants and stakeholders in the coming weeks about its funding framework and fee model proposals, including the Compensation Fund. Members can expect to receive a package during the first week of October that outlines the proposals that came out of the review. The Council further plans to host both virtual and in-person sessions to hear directly from members and will provide an opportunity to share feedback via an online survey.

The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) has expanded its name – now to be known as the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies & Travel Advisors. As befits the new moniker (no word if ACTATA will be the new acronym), the association will also officially call retail travel sellers “travel advisors” in all matters rather than “travel agents.”

BY THE NUMBERS

Canadian arrivals into Britain are poised to set an all-time record this year. And with an expected 944,000 visitors from this country forecast to find their way to the UK – significantly more than not only 2019 (874k), but also the previous high-water mark in 2017 (911k) – VisitBritain officials are eyeing the magic million mark in 2024. Canadian visitors are also expected to break the billion-pound spending mark this year, itself a 27% increase over the already record £934 million mark in 2022.

Air Canada says it has repaid about $589 million in debt that it used to buy aircraft. The company says it repaid a $462-million loan from Canada’s Export Development Corp. that it used to pay for the purchase of 14 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The airline also repaid $127 million in a partial repayment of financings supported by the Export-Import Bank of the United States that was used to buy four Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Caribbean low-cost carrier Arajet – a new entrant in the Canadian market – will introduce connections to Argentina from Toronto and Montreal via its hub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The flights add to a roster of recently announced service from Canada to Sao Paulo, Brazil; Santiago de Chile; Cartagena and Medellin, Colombia; as well as several Caribbean islands, such as Jamaica, Aruba or Curaçao. Vietnam Golf Coast Clubs in World’s Top 100 Golf Resorts Rankings

900 630 wttc2

Presenting Global Retail Tourism Trends and Insights - TOP25GOLFCOURSES.comLaguna Golf Lang Co and Ba Na Hills Golf Club affirm destination’s credentials by making prestigious list

DANANG, Vietnam (September. 15, 2023) — Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) linchpins Laguna Golf Lang Co and Ba Na Hills Golf Club scored a double boost for Central Vietnam’s status as a golfing hub this week after being named among the top 11 best best golf resorts in Asia.

The two clubs were among the superstars at the top of the leaderboard in a list compiled by Golf .com, one of the world’s leading golf titles, that also encompassed top golf destinations in Korea, China, Thailand and Indonesia. Not only were the two clubs ranked among the cream of the region’s golf resorts, but their inclusion in the Asia list also guaranteed them spots in the overall Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World standings.

The Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) — a freshly rebooted destination marketing organization that links Central Vietnam’s best signature golf layouts — has enjoyed a red-letter year as golf travel to the region rebounds with interest following the pandemic. And the latest honour offers yet more wider recognition of how the destination is marrying world-class golf with vibrant cities, incredible beaches, and accommodations as well as an enviable infrastructure.

“Having two Top 100 Resorts in one golf destination is a true testament to the caliber of golf in Central Vietnam,” said Adam Calver, Director of Golf and Marketing at Laguna Lang Co, where a Sir Nick Faldo Signature Design golf course is complemented by award-winning accommodations Banyan Tree Lang Co and Angsana Lang Co. “And with numerous other great courses in this region as well as Laguna Golf Lang Co and Ba Na Hills, it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the quality of golf offerings in the Vietnam Golf Coast.”

The buzz about Central Vietnam’s amazing layouts has been steadily growing over the past few years. Layouts such as Laguna Golf Lang Co, a Sir Nick Faldo Signature Design, and Ba Na Hills Golf Club, laid out by Team Europe Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald over rolling foothills, are ranked among Asia’s best courses. Other highlights, meanwhile, include courses designed by luminaries including Greg Norman, Colin Montgomerie, Robert Trent Jones Jr., and Jack Nicklaus.

According to golf .com writers Ba Na Hills Golf Club “feels like a place apart, with a tranquil atmosphere that stands in quiet contrast to the bustle of Danang.” Writers praised the variety of landscapes incorporated by Sir Nick Faldo into his Signature Design at Laguna Lang Co. The course is sandwiched between the ocean and jungle-clad mountains, offering golfers a range of challenges. “You’ll walk away from Laguna Golf Lang Co and realize it’s unlike any course you’ve ever played — perhaps the best compliment a golf course can receive,” reported golf .com.

“This is a fantastic honour for Ba Na Hills Golf Club and for Central Vietnam as a destination,” said Gary Dixon, general manager at Ba Na Hills Golf Club. “With world-class courses complemented by incredible accommodations, it has evolved into a truly complete golf destination. What’s more, with numerous new courses set to come online over the next few years we expect a few more VGC resorts on that list by the end of the decade.”

Ambassador Club Ignites Nha Trang’s Entertainment Scene

900 600 wttc2

Brand new venue entices revelers with world-class cuisine and performances

NHA TRANG, Vietnam (September 13, 2023) — Vietnam’s most vibrant coastal city, Nha Trang, has a fresh hub for nightlife in the shape of the recently opened Ambassador Club Ana Marina Nha Trang.

The showpiece nightspot has been lighting up the evenings in Nha Trang with revelers packing the venue on a nightly basis to savour a delectable seafood buffet, starring the world-renowned Nha Trang lobster, one of Vietnam’s most famous marine delicacies. There’s also an eclectic entertainment roster that takes in everything from Cuban dance to energized DJ beats.

Ambassador Club is the centrepiece of the new Ana Marina lifestyle complex, overseen by leading boutique cruise operator Ambassador Cruise. When completed, the ambitious project will encompass not only Vietnam’s first dedicated marina, but also a yacht club, fine-dining restaurants, and numerous watersports activities including paragliding, jet-ski and diving.

The complex is designed to appeal to various demographics including foreign tourists, domestic visitors, families, couples and individual travellers.

“We’ve been delighted — but not surprised — by the excellent public response to Ambassador Club since it opened,” said Nguyen Cao Son, founder of Asia Premier Cruises Corporation, which owns Ambassador Cruise as well as Vietdeli, a restaurant company behind some of Vietnam’s most popular dining establishments.

“Nha Trang is famous for being one of the best places in Vietnam to let your hair down. And there’s no better place in the city than the Ambassador Club to do just that. Our experience in establishing the Vietdeli brand has also enabled us to offer truly world-class cuisine as well as entertainment at the club.”

Located at the northern end of Nha Trang’s famous bay, Ana Marina benefits from spectacular views out towards the jungle-clad islands scattered around the azure waters of the East Sea.

These uplifting outlooks are front and centre at Ambassador Club, where revelers can dance, dine, and party long, sultry afternoons and evenings away underneath a mellow setting sun and then a blanket of stars.

Boasting a capacity of up to 1500 pax, the venue is one of the most expansive clubs in Vietnam. Indeed, its generous size makes it an ideal choice for all sorts of MICE events such as wedding receptions, company gatherings and private hires.

Its list of entertainment and culinary attributes is equally comprehensive. An international buffet puts an emphasis on the freshest of local produce and seafood. Diners can choose from over 50 dishes, many of them served up fresh from the BBQ. Standout items include lobsters caught in the famously abundant waters around nearby Binh Ba Island. The restaurant is also open for breakfast and lunch and offers a la carte as well as the set buffet option.

On the entertainment front, there’s a daily line-up of in-house live bands, top local and international DJs, a Cuban dance troupe, and acclaimed cabaret shows. The high-quality entertainment is enhanced, meanwhile, by pulsating lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system.

The venue also benefits from its contemporary design and wide array of different set-ups and spaces. Guests can take time out from the party by the pool to chill on comfortable furniture on a 2nd floor balcony. Restaurants with private rooms, meanwhile, offer the option of seclusion for groups.

“We’d like to think that we’ve covered a lot of bases with Ambassador Club, and covered them well,” continued Nguyen Cao Son. “We are very proud to provide the very highest service standards to give guests a flawless experience and to have added such a fantastic nightlife option to the range of attractions in Nha Trang.”

AROUND THE WORLD IN BLACK AND WHITE: The unsavory truth about racial profiling at airports worldwide

600 279 wttc2

My husband and I are self-proclaimed adventurers, a spirited Canadian couple with an insatiable desire to live life to the fullest. As such, we embarked on an epic yearlong travel quest around the world with our newborn son and ten-year-old daughter. I thought we were prepared for whatever might come our way. We were not.

We armed ourselves with passports, visas, emergency contacts, heavily researched itineraries, and pre-booked flights and accommodations. We knew there would be amazing, frustrating, funny, and thrilling moments as we took parental leave on the road and in the air. We accepted and embraced all that came with spending A LOT of time together away from the comforts of home while parenting.

Despite the known challenges (or opportunities for growth) of travel and parenting, we mostly expected to be living out a charming family love story. It would be filled with thrilling adventures, breathtaking sceneries, unforgettable monuments, and culinary bliss. And… it was. We feasted our five senses on the beauty of the world from the temples of Southeast Asia to the pyramids of Egypt, the rolling hills of Tuscany, and the African plains. However, we also experienced prejudice and racism on a scale I never would have expected.

One of the glaring ways in which this presented itself was in airports. In 2018, we took fifty-six plane rides around the world and I can now say, without a shadow of a doubt, that we are racially profiled and treated differently based solely on the colors of our skin. As a white woman, I, not once, was randomly selected for extra security screening. Roland, my Black husband, was, consistently.

Roland was targeted so often that we tried different scenarios to see if it would change the results. He held the baby or walked with our ten-year-old daughter (who is white, from a previous marriage) to see if being a parent would result in better treatment. He went solo without the kids and bags, or I walked beside him and gave him the stroller while I carried our son, so it was clear we were all together. Sometimes he had collared button-up shirts, other times athletic wear, and others jeans and t-shirt. None of it mattered.

The only times we were able to dodge an extra layer of security screening were when I led the group.  After security let me through, I would indicate to them that we were family. Then, usually, they would wave us all through.

The first time Roland travelled alone that year to meet his sister for a long weekend, he called me agitated and recounted his experience at the small airport in Greece.

“I was at the security line, and they pulled me out of it. The only other group that got pulled over was a South Asian family of four. Security brought me to the counter and two officers came to see me.” He said.

“They were flipping through each page of my passport over and over again. Meanwhile, a constant flow of white people walked through the line with their passports barely being glanced at.”

I could hear the mix of anger, frustration, and sadness in his voice. The officers kept asking him the same questions over and over: When did you arrive in Europe? How long are you staying in Europe? Where have you been so far? Where are you going now? He answered each question politely and consistently.  Roland asked what the officer’s concern was, in hopes to try and help so he wouldn’t miss his flight. They ignored him. After the first two officers left, two different officers came and asked the same series of questions.

They finally let him go with no explanation. He sprinted to the gate, only making it because his flight was delayed.

Often, I get asked which countries were the worst offenders. Although some destinations were more frequent than others, the sad reality is, it happened on a global scale as we travelled across Asia, North America, Africa and Europe. This includes Canada, our own backyard.

It broke my heart. I could no longer be ignorant or brush off the incidents as one-offs. Whenever we walk into a room, the world will view us and treat us differently. The anger and hurt boiled inside me as I realized the way I get to experience the world in my personal, professional, and even in my adventures are laced with a privilege my husband and (some of) my children will not have. They are not made to feel welcomed to travel, explore and adventure the way I am.

It was this broken, angry, sad heart that fuelled the writing of Around the World in Black and White: Traveling with a Biracial Blended Family. It is a tale of self-discovery, racial awakening, resilience, and deeper understanding. This bold and heartfelt memoir will have you rethinking how you travel, how you see the world, and how the world sees you.

Alana Best is the author of “Around the World In Black and White.” She grew up with her parents, two younger sisters, and older brother on the traditional lands of the Treaty 4 Territory, the original lands of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, and the homeland of the Métis, also known as Regina, Saskatchewan. As a travel enthusiast, Alana is passionate about being a global citizen, encouraging wanderlust, and living a full life. She believes travel helps create tolerance, understanding, and empathy. She and her husband, Roland, have the pleasure of working and living on the traditional, unceded territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, with their three incredible children. She and her family love their home in Victoria, British Columbia, and will never stop exploring.

Founded by Bernard Metzger, the visionary behind the TOP25 Restaurants Guide series, Top25Restaurants.com has consistently set the gold standard in the culinary world. Since 2018, our annual list and awards have been powered by the Travelindex-owned and patented “Restaurant Rating Index.” This multi-assets index evaluates various facets of dining establishments, including the quality of food, ambience and comfort, value for money, and social indicators such as online presence, social markers, online footprint, media engagement, and review content analysis by AI. The Restaurant Rating Index is recognized as a benchmark for rating quality restaurants, and chefs aspire to be listed in the TOP25 Restaurants because it not only increases their restaurant’s reputation but also attracting discerning diners seeking unparalleled culinary experiences.

While this year’s event marked the first award ceremony for Phuket, we are proud to note that earlier in June 2023, TOP25Restaurants.com hosted the TOP25 Restaurants Bangkok awards ceremony, adding to the rich tapestry of culinary recognition in the region.

The TOP25 Restaurants Phuket Awards 2023 event took place on September 11, 2023, at the luxurious InterContinental Resort & Spa Phuket. This gathering marked a significant milestone as it was the first in-person event since the inception of the rankings, further highlighting the resilience and vibrancy of the culinary scene in Phuket.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious trophies to each of the top 25 restaurants Phuket award winners. These elegant trophies featured the restaurant’s name and its 2023 rank and were personally presented by Mr. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office. This added a touch of distinction to the evening, underscoring the significance of this recognition.

The Secretariats of State for Tourism of Ciudad de Mexico, Queretaro, Guerrero, Quintana Roo, Nuevo Leon, all signed up to the landmark declaration, designed to guide tourism to Net-Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
