ecoSPIRITS Launches First Circular Wine Technology

Sydney, Australia, March 23, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / ecoSPIRITS announced today a significant expansion of its technology portfolio, taking on the substantial waste and carbon emissions footprint of the estimated 30 billion single use glass wine bottles that are produced each year. The extension of ecoSPIRITS’ patent-pending closed loop packaging technology to premium wines marks the launch of the world’s first globally-scalable circular glass packaging solution for the category. Developed to meet the standards of leading organic and bio-dynamic wine certifications, the new ecoSPIRITS circular wine technology will be deployed first in Australia in partnership with leading global wine producer Accolade Wines. Closed loop wine service will then be made available in a number of other ecoSPIRITS markets worldwide over the second half of 2022.

Designed with premium and certified winemakers in mind, the new circular wine solution offers full lifecycle wine preservation from winery to point of service. Upgraded versions of ecoSPIRITS’ ecoPLANT™, ecoTOTE™ and SmartPour™ technologies deliver high standards of hygiene, oxidation, temperature and ultraviolet light protection for wines distributed in the closed loop system. Amongst other innovations, ecoSPIRITS’ new circular wine technology will preserve the bottle presentation and consumer brand experience in hospitality venues, a distinct difference from existing keg and tapped wine solutions. The new wine technology will leverage ecoSPIRITS’ global closed loop network, and offer the same dramatic cost and carbon footprint reduction as premium spirits.

The world’s first glass-based, globally-scalable circular solution for wine

Among other technology upgrades, ecoSPIRITS has released a new version of its successful ecoPLANT technology that is tailored to process both premium wines and spirits. The new ecoPLANT 2.0W is a semi-automated, containerised wine and spirits processing facility that generates high purity nitrogen gas for ecoTOTE filling and wine blanketing, complies with leading European Union and Australia-New Zealand standards for food grade processing, and delivers gold standard wine hygiene and preservation.

ecoSPIRITS’ award-winning ecoTOTE portfolio will now be expanded to include a wine variation, the ecoTOTE 3.0W. This newest ecoTOTE is designed specifically for premium wines, marked by a striking grey enclosure and with a stainless steel cap liner to comply with organic wine contact material standards and a tinted internal glass vessel to ensure ultraviolet protection for wines during transport and storage. The ecoTOTE 3.0W includes all of the features of the popular ecoTOTE 3.0S, including global cloud-based tracking, shock- and tamper-resistant features, and a 4.5L volume for efficient handling and transportation.

Initially, Banrock Station’s Pinot Grigio, Rosé and Pinot Noir wines will be offered in ecoTOTE 3.0W format to on-premise customers in Sydney, Australia. As part of the partnership, ecoSPIRITS and Accolade will collaborate on a study of the lifecycle reduction in single waste and carbon footprint associated with closed loop distribution of the Banrock Station wines. The partnership with ecoSPIRITS is one element of Accolade’s global sustainability strategy ‘Making Every Drop Count’, detailing a long-term action plan to create real change across the business, industry and planet.

9 REASONS TO VISIT: Big Apple ripe for the picking again

1080 494 wttc2

It’s probably been a while since that last visit to New York (a couple of COVID-plagued years at least?), but the city is bustling again as both New Yorkers and travellers inexorably push towards normalcy. And with Canadians about to wave goodbye to burdensome pre-arrival testing protocols, city tourism officials believe the time is right for their top international market to return again to discover New York’s new-found energy – and re-discover its enduring appeal.

This includes new and upcoming developments and openings, as well as a return of many New York City classics (like Broadway), and forever favourites, such as the Stature of Liberty and Times Square.

“New York City is known for constant renewal and reinvention,” says Fred Dixon, President and CEO of NYC & Company. “From brand-new hotels and restaurants to upcoming star-studded Broadway shows, exhibitions and events, we invite… our global community to experience the vibrant offerings found only in NYC this year.”

Here are nine highlights, the mere thoughts of which get our motor running:

1. Restaurant Week

NYC & Company will celebrate the dining industry with the 30th anniversary of NYC Restaurant Week, kicking off in July. The biannual event began in 1992 and has grown beyond a one-week event to a four-week program taking place at a variety of restaurants from neighbourhood eateries to high-end dining across all five boroughs.

2. NYC from above

Observatories have always been a part of the City’s DNA with classics like the Empire State Building and the Top of the Rock. A few years after the opening of the remarkable One World Observatory, the city’s skyline welcomed Edge at Hudson Yards in 2020, which also recently unveiled a new, breathtaking way to take in the skyline with City Climb, the ultimate skyscraper adventure for thrill seekers looking to take in a view of the City from 366 m. above the ground. Last fall, Summit One Vanderbilt opened as the city’s fifth observatory (banner photo), offering spectacular views. This year, a new virtual attraction debuted offering a unique bird’s-eye view of the skyline: RiseNY is an immersive, interactive experience, giving visitors a chance to view New York City virtually while suspended 30 feet in the air.

3. Vibrant neighbourhoods

There’s more to New York than Manhattan. Globally, New York City is known as one of the most culturally rich and diverse cities and is the home for many international citizens. Throughout the five boroughs, visitors can explore and taste the different cultures that exist within the city – from Little Caribbean located in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and Little Sri Lanka in Tompkinsville, Staten Island, to Manhattan’s Chinatown and Washington Heights, visitors can get a worldly experience in the unique, vibrant neighbourhoods throughout the boroughs.

4. Beloved Broadway:

This this year, Broadway is going to become home for some of the biggest and brightest stars in entertainment. Hugh Jackman recently returned to Broadway for the revival of ‘The Music Man’; Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick star in the Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s ‘Plaza Suit’; Darren Criss and Laurence Fishburne joined the stage for the revival of ‘American Buffalo’; and Daniel Craig will make his anticipated return to the stage on March 29 for ‘Macbeth’.

There are also limited revivals of shows coming to Broadway such as ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow Is Enuf’, beginning April 1; ‘Hangmen’, with previews beginning April 8; and the best-selling novel ‘The Kite Runner’ is coming to Broadway for the first time this summer.

5. As seen on TV

Some of the most memorable and television series set in New York City have recently returned to the small screen. With the return of ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘And Just Like That’, fans can explore the city that is home to Serena van der Woodsen (and the new Gossip Girl cast) and Carrie Bradshaw and friends. Gossip Girl fans can take one of the On Location Tours of the many sites where the popular series was filmed, including The Met steps and Grand Central Terminal; and ‘Sex and the City’ fans can take an official tour, including dining at Buddakan or indulging in cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery.

6. New and evolved museums

Museum of Broadway rendering

• The Museum of Broadway, the first permanent museum dedicated to Broadway, will open in Times Square this summer and celebrate Broadway’s history while also giving a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Broadway productions.

• The Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, Queens, is undergoing a physical and programmatic expansion for a new cultural centre, expected to debut later this year, which includes an interactive exhibit, archival collections, a 68-seat jazz club and store.

• And, the Bronx Children’s Museum, which celebrates the natural curiosity, creativity, and compassion inherent in all children, is also opening this year after moving to a new home in Mill Pond Park.

7. Festivals and festivities

NYC plays host to some of the largest events in the world across a multitude of industries:

• NYCxDESIGN’s 10th Anniversary Festival will happen from May 10-20, offering a global stage for NYC’s designers, manufacturers, artists, and makers to show their latest and greatest creations.

• Celebrations of art continue with the Tribeca Festival from June 8 to 19; the “Conscious Carnival,” Letsgetfr.ee, in August; and New York Fashion Week will return in September, setting the stage for designers worldwide to showcase their latest designs.

8. Pride

As the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, New York City is proudly the centre of Pride celebrations each June, and throughout the year. HAGS, the first LGBTQ+ fine dining restaurant, will open its doors this year in the East Village. NYC also plays host to the annual NYC Pride March taking place on June 26. One of the largest Pride marches in the world, the annual event attracts tens of thousands of participants and millions of sidewalk spectators each year. The celebrations will continue in the boroughs beyond Manhattan, including the new Queens Pride Parade on June 5, the Brooklyn Pride celebration on June 11, and additional celebrations that have yet to be announced.

9. Food, glorious food

• Singapore Hawker Center, an enormous Singaporean-inspired food hall, will soon open in Midtown bringing authentic, traditional cuisine from 18 street-food vendors

• This fall, the James Beard Foundation will also open an 18-stall, 4,900-sq.-m. hall at Pier 57 featuring local businesses and offerings from food entrepreneurs.

• Additionally, visitors arriving at the Moynihan Train Hall can now select from a dozen curated vendors at the Moynihan Food Hall and will soon be able to enjoy the full market, expanded food hall and three signature restaurants.

10. Enticing exhibits

• Through Aug. 14, the American Museum of Natural History is displaying ‘Sharks’, featuring life-size models, fossils, interactive exhibits and more.

• Just underway at The National Museum of the American Indian is ‘Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe’, a retrospective exhibition tracing the artistic development of one of the 20th century’s most innovative Native American painters, Oscar Howe.

• In April, ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure’ will debut at the Starrett-Lehigh Building. The exhibition will include over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, and artifacts to share the story of the Brooklyn-born artist.

• Beginning April 6, the Whitney Museum will be celebrating its 80th Whitney Biennial, ‘Quiet as It’s Kept’, featuring an array of intergenerational artists displaying a constellation of art and ideas that are present today.

• Fashion history enthusiasts can receive a lesson in American fashion this May at The Met Fifth Avenue, with the second half of the Costume Institute’s ‘In America exhibition, An Anthology of Fashion’ launching, featuring women’s and men’s dress from the 18th century to today.

• Also in May, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will present ‘Henri Matisse: The Red Studio’, an exhibition focusing on Matisse’s ‘The Red Studio’ (1911) – a painting that has remained among MoMA’s most important works since it was acquired in 1949 – and featuring never-before-seen archival work and related paintings and drawings.

• This June, the High Line will debut artist Meriem Bennani’s first public sculpture, ‘Windy (2022)’. The sculpture was inspired by the experience of walking on the High Line.

• On July 1, the Brooklyn Museum will host its first survey exhibition dedicated to late artist and designer Virgil Abloh. The exhibition, ‘Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech’, will showcase a mix of fashion, videos, sketches and more, spanning nearly two decades of the multi-creative’s career.

WHERE TO STAY

More than 9,000 new hotel rooms will be coming online in the City this year, including the highly anticipated Aman New York, Fifth Avenue, the new urban sanctuary located on Fifth Avenue; the Ritz-Carlton, NoMad, a new experience inspired by the essence of the new Madison Square Park; and the Hard Rock Hotel New York, a new property offering a backstage pass to the best of Midtown Manhattan, all expected to open this spring.

Additionally, the Renaissance Hotels brand will open properties in Harlem and Flushing in the coming months; the Virgin Hotel New York City and Hotel Barrière Le Fouquet’s New York are expected to open this summer; Moxy Hotels will open properties on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Williamsburg, Brooklyn later this year; and The Fifth Avenue Hotel is expected to open this fall. Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s extraordinary portfolio of 30 hotel brands, award-winning loyalty program, and endless experiences, is welcoming spring with its sights set on city stays. These buzzy locales around the world are waiting to be rediscovered as travelers embrace the desire to get back out and experience new things and redefine leisure travel, making their way to bustling cities everywhere. According to Skift’s 2022 Megatrends Report, at least 36 million Americans can potentially become digital nomads due to the increased flexibility of remote work, further blurring the line between leisure and business travel. The report also found, if only six percent of the 36 million choose to travel, they would represent a $1 billion market flooding the leisure space.

“Around the world, cities have always held the ability to transport travelers back in time or propel them into the future; create vibrancy in new experiences and sweeten the air of opportunity; set the stage for warm homecomings and everlasting anticipated reunions, but ultimately, transform visitors with the power of travel,” said Brian Povinelli, Senior Vice President, Brand, Loyalty & Portfolio Marketing, Marriott International. “Throughout the pandemic, we saw an increase in leisure travel, specifically with the desire to visit less populated, second-tier cities. While that trend has not fully gone away, leisure travel is changing as people are being drawn back to the excitement that the sights, sounds, and bustle of city life evokes. Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of brands provides travelers with truly unique, meaningful stays, that allow them to embrace these destinations once more.”

The project will have 501 villas ranging from two- to seven-bedroom units, with prices starting from Dh1.2m.

The launch of the new project comes as the UAE’s property market continues to recover from the coronavirus-induced slowdown. The market has received a boost from new government initiatives such as residency for remote workers and retirees, as well as the expansion of the 10-year golden visa programme.

The UAE’s measures to stem the spread of the pandemic, such as widespread testing and an effective vaccination programme, have also helped the property market to recover.

Al Hamra is seeking to take advantage of the post-Covid lifestyle trend where people are looking to lead a less stressful life in a relaxed atmosphere, Mr Kurien said.

“A lot of employers are offering flexible working hours, so people don’t have to go to offices as much as they needed to go pre-Covid, and the infrastructure connecting the emirates is very good,” he said.

“So, we are looking for small families who want to move from the hustle and bustle of city life to a more leisurely and relaxed atmosphere in Ras Al Khaimah, and young families who want to buy a home at an affordable price yet have an exclusive island living [experience].”

Along with a focus on buyers from the UAE, the company is also seeking investors from India, Commonwealth of Independent States, Africa and the GCC.

“We already did a pre-launch [sale of the Falcon Island project] exclusively to our broker partners and managed to sell everything we launched,” Mr Kurien said. The new project is part of the company’s five-year strategy unveiled earlier this month, which will result in Dh1bn being invested between 2023 and 2027 to boost its market presence.

“Some of this will be deployed in building new assets, some of it will be deployed in refurbishing and upgrading existing assets and some of it will be deployed in optimising some of the services we offer,” Mr Kurien said.

Al Hamra will also be announcing a new apartment project in the coming weeks, he said. Last month, the developer sold its Al Hamra Mall in Ras Al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi’s Aldar Properties in a deal worth Dh410m.

“Aldar has great plans for the mall, for its development, refurbishment and for its growth, and it fits in well for the overall narrative of Ras Al Khaimah … we are proud that we were able to attract investment from a developer like Aldar.”

The company is also planning to work with other developers or investment companies to jointly develop “both greenfield and brownfield developments in future”, he said, without revealing further details.

On the outlook for the UAE’s property sector, Mr Kurien remains confident that the country will continue to attract investment due to the government’s new initiatives.

“The UAE has always been an attractive destination for investors because of safety [and] security. Now, with the changing laws on residency, especially with golden visas … those are all game changers for the UAE and I am very bullish about inward real estate investment into the UAE — at least for the next five to 10 years.

“Ras Al Khaimah will also benefit from this and the increase in population will have a ripple effect on shopping malls and hotels,” he said.

Kempinski Hotels to Manage Apurva Lombok Resort

Kempinski Hotels to Manage Apurva Lombok Resort - TRAVELINDEXLombok, Indonesia, March 22, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Often referred to as Bali’s younger sibling, Lombok is an unspoiled paradise: a laid-back island escape surrounded by some of the most picturesque palm-fringed beaches in Indonesia. Kempinski Hotels has been selected to become one of the first international hotel groups to operate a luxury resort on the island after signing a management agreement with Indonesian developer PT. Teluk Agung Alami to operate The Apurva Kempinski Lombok. The signing follows more than three years’ successful collaboration with the company at The Apurva Kempinski Bali, which opened in February 2019.

Set on 14.3 hectares of spectacular beachfront in a secluded bay on the southwestern coast of the island, The Apurva Kempinski Lombok will be home to 200 suites and villas starting from a generous 65 sq m, placing them among the largest entry-level rooms in Indonesia. A world-class integrated spa and wellness facility will tap into Indonesia’s deep connections with health and healing, while five dining venues will celebrate the archipelago’s rich culinary traditions. An outdoor party lawn and extensive meetings facilities will also make the resort a popular destination for island weddings and events.

“The southern coast of Lombok is an unspoiled paradise, a land before time where lush hillsides and awe-inspiring bays are surrounded by some of the clearest tropical waters in Southeast Asia. We are thrilled to be partnering again with PT. Teluk Agung Alami to open The Apurva Kempinski Lombok, which promises to be one of the most outstanding resorts in Indonesia,” says Bernold Schroeder, Chief Executive Officer of Kempinski Group and Chairman of the Management Board of Kempinski AG. “The resort will complement the already successful The Apurva Kempinski Bali, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable island-hopping adventure across two spectacular destinations. This new signing reinforces our position as a steadily expanding hotel management group with outstanding properties and reflects our grand ambitions for the region.”

And William Katuari, owner PT Teluk Agung Alami, commented: “We are very excited about our new project in Lombok, and together with Kempinski, we will put this island on the map for luxury travellers around the globe.”

The Apurva Kempinski Lombok will be part of a wider development that will ultimately be home to up to 10 hotels and resorts on Mekaki Beach, as well as an organic farm, a ranch and an equestrian centre: a mixed-use development that will create an integrated luxury resort destination similar in scope to Nusa Dua in Bali. The development is part of the Indonesian government’s bid to drive tourism growth in four designated areas across Indonesia. Lombok is one of the areas where the government’s efforts will be focused, with plans afoot to extend the runway at Lombok International Airport, upgrade Port Lembar on the west of the island to accommodate luxury yachts and cruise liners and build a new international hospital. March sees the launch of the inaugural MotoGP Indonesia at the recently completed Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, one of several international events that local authorities hope to attract to the island in the coming years.

The project will span 157 hectares encompassing the entire bay, which stretches across 3.6 kilometres of Mekaki Beach. Behind it, Mekaki Hill is a challenging climb for which hikers will be rewarded with spectacular views of the bay. The Apurva Kempinski Lombok will occupy one of the largest plots at the heart of the development.

Free from crowds and traffic, Lombok is dotted with traditional villages, local markets and emerald rice paddies. The white sand beaches and turquoise waters that surround the island are a haven for surfing, stand-up-paddle boarding, snorkelling and diving, while the verdant interior is crisscrossed with cycling routes and hiking trails. Intrepid visitors might attempt the trek up Mount Rinjani, the highest mountain on Lombok, which passes picturesque waterfalls, restorative hot springs and quiet villages. The island also serves as the jumping off point for the Gili Islands, home to some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world, and for trips to Komodo National Park, the island habitat of endangered Komodo Dragons.

Lombok is easily accessible from Bali via a 30-minute flight or 1.5-hour ferry crossing, while the flight from Jakarta takes just two hours. The Apurva Kempinski Lombok is set to open in 2027.

A GREEN GETAWAY IN GLASGOW: City takes sustainability seriously

1080 494 wttc2

As host of the world’s biggest climate change conference last year Glasgow takes sustainability seriously. From its expansive parks and gardens, environmental exhibitions, a dining scene with a conscience, environmentally friendly ways to explore the city’s vibrant culture, sustainable shopping, and green awarded hotels, those keen to enjoy a responsible short break should look no further than Glasgow.

Moreover, the city has been recognized as one of the world’s top five cities for its commitment to sustainable business tourism.

In Glasgow, visitors are spoilt for choice, as Scotland’s stunning scenery seeps into the city in rolling hills, expansive country parks and woodland walks. With over 90 parks and gardens, it is no wonder that Glasgow is affectionately known as the “Dear Green Place.”

• The city’s oldest park, Glasgow Green is just east of the city centre, where one will find the spectacular Doulton Fountain, the largest terracotta fountain in the world and the beautiful McLennan Arch.

• Also east of the city is a green space with a difference – the Glasgow Necropolis. This Victorian garden cemetery is brimming with history, varying architectural styles and from the top of the Necropolis, views of picture-perfect views of Glasgow and beyond.

• The west of the city is home to the beautiful Glasgow Botanic Gardens, known internationally for its impressive glasshouses and extensive tropical plant collections, whilst the scenic Kelvingrove Park sits close by.

• Head a few miles south of the city and visit Pollok Country Park. With cycle tracks, heritage trails, a stunning country manor house and its own fold of beautiful Highland Cows – the park has something for everyone to see and do.

Explore Glasgow

One of the most environmentally friendly ways to explore Glasgow is by foot. A walking tour is a great way to find your feet and learn more about the city at the same time. Luckily, Glasgow has a great choice of walking tours from which to choose:

• Why not take in some fresh air while hearing fascinating tales from around the city, admire its architecture, notable sights, and hidden gems. Choose from tours around the city centre or west end or one that takes in many of the city’s colourful murals, all ran by Walking Tours in Glasgow. There are also tours focusing on Glasgow’s fascinating music scene from Glasgow City Music Tours and a Mackintosh tour exploring the life, work and influence of Glasgow’s most renowned artist, architect and designer. This tour is a collaboration between Walking Tours in Glasgow and Mackintosh at the Willow.

• Prefer touring on two wheels? Why not join a Glasgow Bike Tour to take in some the city’s historic sights? Or explore Glasgow yourself with one of the city’s Next Bikes, part of Glasgow’s public bike hire scheme. With 800 bikes for hire in 79 locations, including e-bikes and electric stations available 24/7, it couldn’t be easier to get around the city and beyond. Also why not take a ride on the world’s third oldest metro system, Glasgow Subway. The owners of the Subway are committed to reducing its carbon footprint and adopting sustainable policies and practices.

• Glasgow Science Centre is definitely worth a visit and a great addition to any ‘green’ itinerary with their current Powering the Future exhibition, looking at our energy consumption and exploring green energy options. Although covering a serious topic, this exhibition provides a fun hands on experience with an energy dance floor and Biowall, a living wall containing a range of different plant species.

• Head just 20 minutes south from Glasgow to explore over 130 km of trails and admire over 200 wind turbines at the UK’s largest onshore windfarm, Whitelee. The windfarm also has an onsite visitor centre and lots of activities are available too, including mountain biking, cycle hire and bus tours.

• It is also worth remembering that many of Glasgow’s must-see tourist destinations, such as Glasgow Cathedral, Gallery of Modern Art and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum have received prestigious green tourism awards.

Eco Eats

Glasgow’s eating and drinking scene is vibrant and exciting with food and drink to suit all tastes, including many options for ‘eco-friendly’ eats in the city.

• Choose from a great selection of vegan and veggie restaurants offering plant-based menus, such as Mono, a vegan café bar in the heart of the Merchant City. Renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and quality food, Mono also has an in-house record store and regular live entertainment and gigs, helping Glasgow maintain its place as one of the UK’s most vegan-friendly cities.

• The renowned Ubiquitous Chip sources local produce creating stunning Scottish dishes, with minimal waste. For award-winning seafood head to Gamba, which only serves sustainably caught fish and has been given three stars from the Sustainable Restaurant Association – the highest possible rating.

• Eat with a conscious at Locavore Café, located in their Govanhill shop just south of the city. A social enterprise where all profits are reinvested into building a better local food system, Locavore is unique for being the only fully organic place to eat within Glasgow, even having their own organic market garden.

Sustainable shopping

Glasgow has a considerable second hand and preloved shopping scene, with numerous shops to choose from across the city. Glad Rags Thrift based south of the city saves pre-loved clothes going to landfill, while also providing volunteering and employment opportunities within the community. Starry Starry Night is a magical treasure trove of vintage clothing well worth a visit, or go to Emily Rose Vintage for beautifully, upcycled furniture, homeware, books, and gifts.

For eco beauty and bath products visit Lovesome Emporium in De Courcy’s Arcade in the West of the city. Plus, if you are staying in self- catering accommodation, be sure to check our Roots, Shoots and Flowers, or the Zerowaste Market for environmentally conscious food.

Where to stay

Glasgow has numerous accommodation options, including big brands such as Radisson Blu, Glasgow Marriott, and Jurys Inn, to more unique properties such as the Fraser Suites, offering deluxe apartments. For a more historic stay visitors can’t go wrong with voco Glasgow Central Hotel built in 1883, and all having earned the prestigious Green Tourism Award from Visit Scotland.

INTO THE DRAGON’S DEN: Cardiff in 48 hours

1080 494 wttc2

Europe’s youngest capital city, Cardiff is also one of the easiest to enjoy. The old docks are now a striking waterfront, and the compact city centre is packed with museums and concert halls, energetic nightlife, great food, some of the best shopping in western Britain, and a vibrant cultural scene.

The centre of the Land of Dragons, a city of castles, and of arcades, Cardiff is also home to the expansive Millennium Centre for the arts, and a world-class sports stadium, home to Cardiff City FC and Wales’ national rugby team.

Ideal for a weekend visit or a couple of days while touring Britain, here’s a suggested guide for 48 hours in Cardiff:

CHECK IN

With the rapid expansion of tourism in recent years, Cardiff offers plenty of choice for places to crash, but few are as impressive as The Exchange. Housed in one of Cardiff’s most significant historical buildings, this 200-room luxury hotel was once the headquarters of the global coaling industry and where the first £1 million business deal was made in 1904.

Another luxury option is the glass-fronted voco St. David’s Hotel, located on Cardiff Bay. However, if boutique is more your style, The Pontcanna Inn offer just 10 wholly Instagrammable rooms, whilst Hotel Indigo has expanded into the city with the addition of an impressive roof terrace that offers spectacular views of Cardiff Castle and the surrounds.

DAY ONE

10:30 – Arguably the best way to plunge straight into the vibrant life of Cardiff – and get talking to its people – is to take a culinary tour of the capital’s thriving food scene with a local guide from Loving Welsh Food. Cardiff Tasting Tour will take you all over the city centre, calling in at specialist food producers, retailers and the famous indoor market. Six delicious food and drink tastings include continental meats, cheeses, cockles, laverbread and Welsh beers and ciders, plus along the way you’ll pass beautiful parks, majestic buildings and landmarks including Cardiff Castle and the Principality Stadium.

14:00 – Whilst Cardiff City FC may be the prominent sports team, if you want to really understand the soul of the Welsh people, backtrack to the Principality Stadium and take a tour of perhaps one of the world’s most enjoyable sporting arenas, home to the fierce Welsh Rugby Team – and host stadium for the UEFA Champions League Final 2017. Experience the build-up before the match in the Dragon’s Lair, Wales’ team dressing room and hear the spine-tingling roar of 74,500 fans as you walk down the players’ tunnel towards the hallowed turf.

OR

14:00 – Wales has no shortage of rapids on its rivers, but the Olympic-standard ones at Cardiff International White Water roar and tumble through this man-made white water course right in the heart Cardiff Bay. Two-hour coached sessions of exhilarating white-water rafting are suitable for complete beginners and seasoned experts, and if rafting’s not your bag, you can opt for canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, “hotdogging” in inflatable kayaks or bodyboarding. If you still want more once you’ve finished on the waves, you can strap on a harness and cross the high ropes timber structure towering above the white-water course – before tackling the Burma Bridge, Monkey Swing, Barrel Crawl and Zip Wire.

16:00 – It’s 160 years since the first of seven Cardiff arcades – The Royal Arcade – opened, and there has been a recent push to celebrate the collective glory of the city’s “crown jewels.” With over 100 local eateries and independent retailers, the arcades allow for a shopping experience peppered with character, eclecticism, stories, and history; all brought together under a roof of classic Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Don’t miss Gin and Juice, the only cocktail-come-salad bar in the city; tattoo and barber shop Sleep When your Dead; and the world’s oldest record store, Spiller Records.

19:30 – Home to a mind-boggling array of independent eateries, the long stretch from Victoria Park to the River Taff is the perfect place to take evening stroll and decide on where to eat. From pizza at The Dough Thrower to nouvelle Indian cuisine at Purple Poppadom, build-your-own burgers at Time and Beef or delicious Lebanese takeaway at Falafel Wales; this is authentic foodie heaven. If you prefer your dinner with a local flavour, make a beeline for Pontcanna bistro Milkwood, where you can chow down on dishes like Sewin (Welsh sea trout) with leeks and brown shrimp.

22:00 – Cardiff is one of the best places in the UK to sample the taste bud-teasing pleasures of craft beer. At Porter’s, which contains Wales’ first pub theatre (and has no sign over the door) they serve a honey beer called Hiver and a seaweed ale that goes by the name of Kelpie. It’s also one of many venues offering jazz night’s – albeit more dancing than placid – across the city which also includes industrial-styled Tiny Rebel, Americana speakeasy Bootlegger and the aptly named Café Jazz. Visit in October for Sŵn festival which transforms the city into a musical adventure playground.

LATE – When the night is done you might be tempted to grab some late-night grub, and where better to visit than Chippy Lane, technically Caroline Street, which is considered to be first place that the eponymous fish and chips were sold in Cardiff in the 19th century.

DAY TWO

10:30 –Anna Loka roughly translates to ‘Earth Food’ in Sanskrit, and at this restaurant you’ll find exactly that: a plant-based menu where you can load up on a full vegan breakfast with peanut butter and coffee pancakes on the side. If you’re hankering for a more traditional brunch menu, try The Early Bird for must-have French toast or proper café Garlands for a “Good Morning Mumbles” breakfast, which includes Welsh Rarebit, laverbread and cockles.

12:00 – Explore the art, science, and culture of brewing over the course of three to four hours at Crafty Devil Brewery before hitting three or four stops – from trendy taprooms to marvellous micropubs – all within about a 15-minute walk around the hip Canton area of the city.

OR

12:00 – Few places define Welsh identity as profoundly as St. Fagans, which opened in 1948 in the grounds of a 16th-century manor house as the very first national open-air museum in the UK. Since then, more than 40 original Welsh buildings from different historic periods have been rebuilt piece by piece in the 40-hectare park including houses, a farm, a school and a splendid workmen’s institute. Get out of town to visit this glorious architectural treasure house which is deservedly the most popular heritage attraction in Wales.

15:00 – Extraordinary cakes and pastries are worth making the journey north to the Maindy area of the city where Cocorico Patisserie can be found. This is Instagram heaven featuring creative creations including the Banana in Pyjama (banana mousse, pineapple cremeux, mango jelly and coconut dacquoise), Praline Spinner (vanilla dipomate, Gianduju crumbs, salted caramel with Dulcey and Gianduju whipped ganache), and a spectacular array of colourful macarons!

16:00 – Besides the grand splendour of Cardiff Castle, one odd quirk to take note of while enjoying a stroll around its exterior is The Animal Wall. Designed by architect William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, the much-loved wall features models of animals including moneys and lions, a seal, pelican and many more, poking out ready to be snapped.

18:00 – Based at Prison Cardiff, The Clink is a fine-dining venue run by prison inmates serving organic Welsh produce has been voted one of the best restaurants in the UK. Taste the very best of Wales while giving a helping hand to those who deserve a second chance in life.

19:30 – Finish your weekend by taking in a show at the incredible Wales Millennium Centre on Cardiff Bay. This architectural marvel is also a globally significant cultural landmark – a performing arts centre with a mission to “inspire our nation and impress the world.” Home of the Welsh National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, it also stages musicals, stand-up comedy, and art exhibitions.
