1037 691 wttc2

Europe's Largest Hostel Chain Publishes Annual Sustainability Report - TRAVELINDEXBerlin, Germany, July 16, 2026 / TRAVELINDEX / a&o Hostels has released its annual Sustainability Report for 2025, detailing key environmental achievements. With 46 properties and approximately 31,600 beds in 32 cities and ten European countries, a&o is Europe’s largest hostel chain and continues to set sustainability standards with concrete achievements, clear goals, and transparent tracking.

a&o ESG Director, Arben Maliqi, has presented the fourth Sustainability Report for the company which reviews records set in 2025. The report finds that CO2e emissions per overnight stay have fallen by 1.9 percent compared to 2024, now at 3.58 kilograms. Four new locations, acquired in 2025 and repurposed as a&o accommodation, account for the slight increase in total emissions by 3.1 percent to 13,575 metric tons. The 41-page report, covering the key areas of energy, engagement, and corporate ethics, is now available for download at aohostels.com.

Oliver Winter, Founder and CEO of a&o Hostels, said: “The travel industry is constantly evolving, and a&o is actively shaping this transformation by combining growth with our commitment to further reducing energy consumption and using resources responsibly. Travel remains a fundamental human need and an ever-growing industry. Moving forward, we will continue to work with our partners and guests to contribute to travel that is resource-efficient and socially responsible.

In 2025, a&o welcomed nearly three million guests, who accounted for 6.6 million overnight stays.

Focus on property conversion and collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin

Having opened four new locations in 2025, including the a&o London Docklands Riverside in a historic 17th-century warehouse complex on the Thames, a&o now operates 46 properties, 43 of which are conversions of existing buildings. The company now turns its sights to a major project titled “a&o Berlin Checkpoint Charlie”, the conversion a former office building on Rudi-Dutschke-Straße which is currently vacant. In cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin, a&o is conducting a life cycle assessment study for this new Berlin location intended to serve as a blueprint for future conversion projects.

Key ESG-Goals Achieved

a&o’s sustainability focus is on direct, verifiable emissions reductions within its own operations and value chain. This includes optimizing energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy, reducing waste, and collaborating closely with suppliers. External offsetting solutions are avoided. ESG-director Arben Maliqi also highlights measures and projects for social engagement. Key initiatives include:

  • 100 percent green electricity: 100 percent of electricity needs at all locations covered by green electricity (where available);
  • Paperless: Waste reduction through 100 percent digital guest registration;
  • Cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin: Creation of a life cycle assessment as a blueprint for further conversions;
  • a&o educare and cultura e storia: Initiation of solidarity-funded school trips and support for the preservation of cultural heritage

The top three destinations with the lowest emissions per overnight stay are:

  • a&o Kopenhagen Sydhavnen (1,88 kg)
  • a&o Kopenhagen Norrebro (1,93 kg)
  • a&o Berlin Mitte (2,24 Kg)

Education, Culture, Community

In addition to measurable energy-related measures, social engagement is another key component of the a&o sustainability strategy. This includes investments in training, education, and health management for the more than 1,300 employees, as well as support for social and cultural projects.

Examples of this include:

  • 378,000 euros were invested in training and continued education, an increase of eight percent compared to 2024;
  • a&o cultura e storia: In collaboration with local educational, cultural, and administrative institutions, a&o is supporting the restoration of Villa Mocenigo, a neoclassical complex dating from 1805 in Alvisopoli, in the Veneto region, to preserve the site as cultural heritage and make it accessible to visitors once again;
  • a&o educare: the everyonecantravel .app is a platform for solidarity-funded school trips; the “Everyone Comes Along” relief fund helps low-income families finance a class trip;
  • Sports Sponsorship: a&o is involved in soccer, handball, and basketball, among other sports, and is also the main sponsor of the Austrian women’s national team at the Homeless World Cup, an initiative in collaboration with Caritas Graz

Awards and Outlook

For initiatives and projects as part of its ESG commitment, a&o has received multiple awards, including in 2025:

  • The “A World for Travel Societal Development Award”;
  • A “Rating 2” from Sustainable Fitch for a strong ESG profile—for the third consecutive year;

We’re not resting on our laurels,” emphasizes Winter in the foreword to the 2025 Sustainability Report. “We know that much more is still possible and necessary, and we are confident that we will make further significant progress together with our partners and guests in the spirit of sustainable tourism”, he adds.

Since measurements began in 2015, a&o has been able to reduce CO2e emissions by 76 percent to approximately 3.58 kilograms per overnight stay. For more figures, data, and background information, see the latest 2025 Sustainability Report.

Following the success of previous wellness activities, the hotel’s July edition introduces Sunset Sound Bath, an immersive meditation experience led by Khun Taechit Choeuyphuang, Founder of Stillwave. Drawing on the therapeutic qualities of sound and mindful presence, the session invites both hotel guests and the local community to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves in a peaceful riverside setting.

Taking place during the golden hour, the experience embraces the calming transition from day to evening. Set against the timeless beauty of the Chao Phraya River, guests can unwind as the warm hues of sunset create a tranquil atmosphere before immersing themselves in a guided sound bath designed to encourage stillness, presence, and deep relaxation.

Unlike traditional meditation, a sound bath requires no previous experience. Participants simply rest comfortably while listening to the soothing resonance of crystal singing bowls and other therapeutic instruments. The harmonious vibrations help create a meditative environment that encourages deep relaxation, mindfulness, and a moment of pause from the pace of everyday life.

Many people choose sound bath experiences to:

  • Create a restorative space to unwind
  • Foster an overall sense of well-being

“Wellness is no longer simply about exercise—it’s about creating moments to slow down, reconnect, and recharge,” said Lilly Pattarachokchuy, Director of Marketing Communications, Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside Hotel Bangkok. “Through Wellness Wednesdays, we hope to transform our beautiful riverside spaces into meaningful experiences where both hotel guests and the local community can nurture body and mind. Partnering with Stillwave allows us to introduce a unique practice that perfectly complements the peaceful atmosphere of the Chao Phraya River at sunset.”

“Sound has a unique ability to help us become fully present,” said Khun Taechit Choeuyphuang, Founder of Stillwave. “A sound bath creates a space where participants can simply pause, let go of daily distractions, and experience deep relaxation through the gentle vibrations of therapeutic instruments. Combined with the serenity of the riverside at sunset, the experience becomes an invitation to reconnect with both yourself and the present moment.”

Perched on Level 26 overlooking the Chao Phraya River, the venue offers a serene setting above the city’s bustle. Palace Hotel Tokyo Unveils the Art of Japanese Fashion

900 600 wttc2

Palace Hotel Tokyo Unveils the Art of Japanese Fashion - TRAVELINDEXTokyo, Japan, July 14, 2026 / TRAVELINDEX / For the latest in its ‘Best of Japan’ series, Palace Hotel Tokyo is launching ‘Couture Tokyo: The Art of Japanese Fashion’, a stay package created to elevate travelers’ understanding of Japanese culture and aesthetics through the lens of fashion and textile artistry.

Designed to highlight the substance and creativity behind Japanese fashion design and sensibilities, the experience is anchored by an insider’s introduction to some of Japan’s most exemplary brands with a selection of tours curated by Kaori Nakano, a scholar of fashion and luxury culture.

The ‘Couture Tokyo: The Art of Japanese Fashion’ stay package includes:

  • Two nights of accommodation
  • Daily breakfast – choice of In-Room Dining or at Grand Kitchen
  • A special kaiseki course dinner at Wadakura inspired by fashion icon Kenzo Takada
  • An original Palace Hotel Tokyo tote bag by suzusan, a contemporary Japanese textile brand
  • A privately guided fashion tour (approximately 3-4 hours, inclusive of private car service)
  • A special gift from the brand featured in guests’ choice of tours

Perfect for fashion aficionados and enthusiasts, the tours present guests with the opportunity to explore their choice of one of three of the city’s most celebrated fashion destinations. Each tour unveils the rich narrative of Japan’s fashion evolution through the history of the neighborhood, and is driven by bespoke experiences meticulously crafted exclusively for Palace Hotel Tokyo guests by three iconic brands:

Glitzy Ginza

Arguably one of Tokyo’s most famous shopping districts, Ginza is home to Wako, a venerable institution housed in the landmark Seiko House where timeless Japanese elegance and design innovation converge. Here, the finest traditions of Japanese craftsmanship are showcased alongside contemporary fashions and coveted timepieces. On its second-floor Jewelry Square, the selection of sophisticated, high-end pieces includes those by Wako’s own jewelry brands and designed and crafted by its in-house designers and artisans.

Having stood the test of time since 1947, Wako not only represents an incomparable retail experience but also a stalwart advocate for the preservation of the essence of Japanese artistic culture. Its gallery-esque basement level is dedicated to celebrating the rich tapestry of Japanese art and aesthetics, with exhibitions showcasing works by living national treasures and up-and-coming young artists alike.

Following a privately guided tour of Wako, guests can opt to swing by Dover Street Market for a striking contrast. Leaning more towards the edgy and eclectic, the artistry in fashion is evident across the outlet’s seven retail floors where urban chic meets trendy streetwear.

Stylish Daikanyama

Kicking off the tour in stylish Daikanyama is a visit to the flagship boutique of Jun Ashida. As the renowned pioneer of Japanese prêt-à-porter, Ashida’s interpretation of ‘elegant and practical’ endures more than half a century after he first arrived on Japan’s fashion scene and ultimately garnered international acclaim. For his contributions to fashion, Ashida was awarded Japan’s distinguished Order of the Rising Sun and purple ribbon Medal of Honor, France’s Order of Arts & Letters, and also the Order of Merit from Italy and Luxembourg. Today, his legacy lives on through his daughter, Tae Ashida, who now spearheads the fashion house and whose own contemporary designs reflect a synthesis of innovation and her father’s take on refined elegance.

The nearby MIZEN TOKYO Atelier + Showroom follows a philosophy of ‘Slow Fashion, Slow Luxury’, encouraging mindful contemplation of the true value and craftsmanship behind its creations by seamlessly blending workshop and boutique.

Upscale Omotesando & Eclectic Ura-Harajuku

Tantamount to Tokyo’s Champs-Élysées, Omotesando is a haven for those with a love not only for luxury retail but also the architecture and interiors in which they are showcased. Here, world-class brands and works by starchitects coexist alongside the avant-garde boutiques situated in the warren of backstreets that branch out from Omotesando’s tree-lined boulevard and intersect with Ura-Harajuku – the roots of Japanese subculture and the hub for free-spirited fashion.

Anchoring this tour is a visit to the boutiques of Kimono Yamato as well as that of KIMONO ARCH and Y. & SONS, two distinct brands that fall under its creative umbrella. At Kimono Yamato, guests will be introduced to how the company has carried forward the legacy of Japan’s deeply layered kimono culture by melding heritage and innovation into the design of garments that can be incorporated into daily life. From the casual to the ceremonial, each piece is underpinned by over a century of expertise. At the ‘men’s kimono tailor’ Y. & SONS, pieces are designed to be paired with western attire while at KIMONO ARCH, its more playful creations cater to both men and women.

Other Japanese brands in the area beckoning discovery include CFCL (Clothing For Contemporary Life) – which reimagines knitwear through advanced 3D, computer-aided, knitting technology to create garments that balance functionality, comfort, easy care and contemporary elegance while minimizing material waste.

PORTER is renowned around the world for its meticulously handcrafted bags, each one carefully made by skilled Japanese artisans. At its flagship store, an on-site workshop is seamlessly integrated into the elegant, two-story space. Here, visitors can watch artisans at work up close, experiencing firsthand the craftsmanship behind the company’s philosophy of, ‘Isshin-Nyūkon’ (‘Heart and Soul into Every Stitch’).

In addition to choosing their preferred shopping destination to explore (from the three detailed above), guests will be able to choose between being accompanied by a guide trained on the tours curated by Kaori Nakano or opting for the rare opportunity to be hosted by Nakano herself alongside an interpreter (additional charges apply).

For guests who wish to venture beyond one of the three fashion destinations, there is a separate option (at additional charge) to book a half-day (approximately 6 hours) tour with Kaori Nakano that would be entirely tailored to their interests (in lieu of the tour included in the stay package).

At Wadakura, the hotel’s signature Japanese restaurant, the prix-fixe kaiseki dinner included in the stay package will feature a special shabu-shabu presentation that was a favorite of the late fashion designer Kenzo Takada whenever he was in-residence at Palace Hotel Tokyo (currently only available upon request, advanced notice required).

The trail-blazing artist was most celebrated for having revolutionized 1970s fashion by being the first Japanese designer to achieve widespread acclaim in the Parisian fashion scene.

The ‘Couture Tokyo: The Art of Japanese Fashion’ package is bookable for stays from July 22, 2026 onwards (subject to availability), with prices starting at JPY 372,000 (based on double occupancy).*

*Rates are inclusive of 10% consumption tax

*A 15% service charge and a Tokyo accommodation tax of JPY 200 per person will be applied separately
