Major Golf Destinations Lauded in 2023 IAGTO Awards

700 382 wttc2

Major Golf Destinations lauded in 2023 IAGTO Awards - TOP25GOLFCOURSES.com - VISITTHAILAND.net - TRAVELINDEXLondon, March 6, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / In the 22nd annual IAGTO Awards, five very different golf destinations – Cyprus, Dubai, Los Cabos, South Carolina and Thailand – have each been proclaimed as Golf Destination of the Year for 2023.

Established in 2000 and recognised as the most prestigious awards in the global golf tourism industry, the 2023 edition of the IAGTO Awards celebrates not only these five golf destinations, but also the outstanding service provided by 60 golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, receptive operators and tourist boards in 22 countries. This year, members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) across five continents were invited to vote for destinations and businesses that delivered a great experience for golf travellers in 2022.

IAGTO Chief Executive Peter Walton said “IAGTO golf tour operators handle 90% of international golf vacation sales worldwide, so they are in a great position to assess the performance of golf destinations and the service provided by industry partners, through the experience of their customers. We currently have 669 golf tour operators in 61 countries which explains the geographical diversity of this year’s Awards recipients.

“It’s great to see relatively small golf destinations such as Cyprus, Dubai and Los Cabos in the mix with the established giants of South Carolina and Thailand. Recipients of our Outstanding Service Award include the renowned golf resorts of Adare Manor, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Casa de Campo, Fancourt and SO/ Sotogrande Resort, alongside the relative newcomers of Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia, Hoiana Shores Golf Club in Vietnam and the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in Portugal.

“There are also names likely unfamiliar to golfers themselves, as the Awards also recognise specialist golf receptive operators, such as PAGS in Portugal and Desert Gate Tourism in the United Arab Emirates which organise the ground arrangements for international golf tour operators. Lesser-known winners include El Gouna Golf Club on Egypt’s Red Sea coast and Heritage Hotels in Kenya.

“Finally, hats off to the tourist boards who did such a great job supporting the golf tourism industry last year, including Cadiz Tourism in Spain’s Andalucía region, Florida’s First Coast of Golf in north east Florida and England’s Golf Coast, in the country’s north west, among others.”

The annual IAGTO Awards are voted for by IAGTO’s specialist golf tour operator members. For the 2023 Awards, each was asked to vote for what they considered to be the destinations and businesses that delivered a great experience for golf travellers in 2022, with the top five destinations named Golf Destination of the Year winners and 60 golf tourism industry service providers honoured with Outstanding Service awards.

About IAGTO
Established in 1997, IAGTO is the global trade organisation of the golf tourism industry, and has 2400 members in over 90 countries including almost 700 golf tour operator members in 61 countries, which control more than 90% of golf holiday packages sold worldwide and which collectively have annual sales of over €2.5 billion. IAGTO runs annual Asia, Europe and North America Golf Tourism Conventions, along with regular Destination Conventions. IAGTO established the International Golf Travel Writers Association in 2000, the year in which the first prestigious annual IAGTO Awards also took place.

WHAT’S COOKING IN BIRMINGHAM

600 275 wttc2

Birmingham today is hardly recognizable to those who may have visited in the past. Britain’s second city has re-invented itself over the past couple of decades, and not least in recent years leading up to and including last summer’s Commonwealth Games – an event city officials consider a global coming out party for the West Midlands city.

But beyond infrastructure improvements and an increasingly enticing urban environment (such as the delightful historic canal district), the city has also cooked up a mouth-watering gastronomic scene, packed with award-winning restaurants and an abundance of food and drink highlights.

The city is packed with every kind of eatery from street food to fine-dining restaurants, super-stylish bars, and excellent curry houses in its Balti Triangle. In fact, Birmingham and the surrounding area boasts 11 Michelin-starred restaurants and hundreds of restaurants from all over the globe.

Michelin-starred fine dining

Birmingham alone is home to five different Michelin-star restaurants, the most of any British city outside of London. They are:

• Carters of Moseley offers a blend of modern and classic dishes and champions a sustainable approach, with lots of produce coming from its own garden and a selection of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines on offer

• Chef Adam Stokes serves up an array of modern cuisine amid the art deco surroundings of Adam’s

• Purnell’s is renowned for its contemporary fine dining, with chef Glynn Purnell creating British classics influenced by Europe and the Far East

• Simpson’s Restaurant offers flavoursome modern dishes in a sleek suburban Georgian mansion

• Opheem is a boldly decorated Indian restaurant, where patrons can enjoy dishes packed with distinct flavours and a delectable tasting menu

The Michelin Guide also reveals further fine dining options in the city.

Balti Triangle

Known as the original home of the Balti curry, a trip to Birmingham wouldn’t be complete without sampling the spiced dish, which is inspired by traditional Kashmiri recipes and fast-cooked in a thin-pressed steel wok to burn off excess oil and is also as individual as the chef cooking it.

Foodies looking to sample the local delicacy can choose from a variety of family-run restaurants, including Shababs, and legendary Adil’s, which is said to have introduced the method of cooking to Britain in 1977. Located about five kilometres from the city centre, the Triangle spans Stratford, Alcester, and Wake Green roads, and includes popular Ladypool Road and Stoney Lane. The area received its name due to the high density of restaurants (over 100) using the Balti technique.

Street food

From small food wagons to collections of street vendors, travellers don’t need fine dining to enjoy the best of what Birmingham has to offer. Digbeth Dining Club operates at a number of venues and events across the region, welcoming a diverse mix of vendors and cuisines. Two permanent sites at Digbeth Dining Club and Hockley Social Club can be found a short distance from the centre of Birmingham, as well as another permanent site, Herbert’s Yard.

Fish & ChipsA staple on any visit to the UK requires fish and chips, and one of the worthiest venues is the Hobbs & Sons Restaurant located in the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley (about a 30-minute drive north of Birmingham). The museum is a recreated village that recalls life, both physical and social, in the West Midlands during the Industrial Revolution through historical interpreters (mine manager, chemist, chain maker) in a replica town cobbled together from real buildings transferred from elsewhere in the region. And that includes Hobbs, a working bakery and chippy, which is renowned for its fish and chips fried in traditional, but now rare, beef drippings.

Vegan

A varied array of vegan and plant-based options can be found, including at Birmingham’s Indico Mailbox, which serves up a selection of Punjab-style street food from a dedicated vegan menu, while Mowgli in Grand Central offers moreish Indian street food packed with flavour. For something a bit different, trot down to The Birmingham Stable to tuck into delectable plant-based and veggie sourdough pizzas.

Craft beer & cocktails

Craft beer has surged in popularity in Britain, and there are plenty of breweries, microbreweries and tap rooms where visitors can sample their creations. Birmingham Brewing Company is a short walk from Bournville Station and serves a delicious selection of vegan and gluten-free beers, as well as natural wines, local cider and an array of spirits and soft drinks.

Alternatively, stop off at Brewhouse & Kitchen in Sutton Coldfield (20 minutes from city centre) for freshly brewed craft beers, as well as experiences including beer and gin tasting masterclasses and even the chance to be a brewer for the day.

Meanwhile, a crawl along Brindley Place, is just the ticket for pub-goers. The large mixed-used development near the city centre is distinguished by its picturesque, industrial era canal (Birmingham is said have more miles of canals than Venice) and its attendant restaurants, cafés, and pubs. Options include:

The Malt House: Closest to the city centre end of Brindley Place, making for an ideal place for a pre- or post night-out drink before a concert or the theatre. Famous patrons are said to have included Lady Gaga and Bill Clinton. But despite the pedigree, the pub is thoroughly traditional, split across two levels, and offering a welcome outdoor patio to help drink in the sparkling canal-side atmosphere.

The Canal House: Located mid-way along the waterway, Canal House was recently named 2022 Pub of the Year by West Midlands Tourism. Overlooking the Gas Street Basin, with dozens of moored boats, the two-storey venue has an intimate upper balcony and a spacious ground level outdoor patio with picnic tables. Inside, it’s barnboard chic, and bright and open, not stuffy. In or out, the venue touts “live music, flowing drinks and delicious food.”

Canalside Café: Across the Basin from Canal House, the compact Canalside Café overflows with flowers in summer, and with its whitewash façade, suggests a Greek island setting rather than the UK’s former industrial heartland. But its real ale bona fides, along with honeyed cider and mulled wine, prove otherwise. The venue, uniquely long and narrow inside, is said to be “the smallest pub in Birmingham,” virtually guaranteeing that patrons will soon be happily chatting up their neighbours, whether they want to or not.

Meanwhile, Central Birmingham is home to several cocktail bars renowned for serving up a collection of bold and colourful signature creations. With canal-side views of The Mailbox to accompany its menu of carefully crafted cocktails, Gas Street Social also has a range of brunch and other dining options. Alternatively, head into the heart of the historic Great Western Arcade to sample the handcrafted cocktails on offer amid the funky surroundings of The Pineapple Club.

World of chocolate

Cadbury World

Chocolate fans will want to visit Cadbury World, an immersive self-guided journey through the magic of chocolate making “from bean to bar,” and including the origins of Cadbury in Birmingham in 1824. Tour highlights include tasting zones, a 4D cinema experience, and the largest collection of Cadbury memorabilia in the world (note: there is no factory tour). The massive attraction, which makes 1.2 million Cadbury Cream Eggs per day, amongst other treats, also boasts the world’s largest Cadbury shop. It can be reached via train from New Street Station to Bourneville in about 15 minutes (plus another 15-minute walk). Opening days and times vary. Pre-booking tickets is recommended.

Festival

Held in the medieval ruins of Ludlow Castle, Shropshire (about 90 minutes from Birmingham, the Ludlow Food Festival (Sept. 8-10, 2023) celebrates the delectable array of produce found in the Welsh Marches, which run along the border of England and Wales. Alongside the Ludlow Spring Festival and Ludlow Magnalonga, it’s also one of a trio of events making the town a must-see spot. And with more than 180 local food and drink producers offering tastings, sampling and more, it’s an unmissable feast for foodies.

ROUND-UP: Feb. 27-March 3, 2023

Airports in Montreal and Toronto made big news last week, along with the unveiling of a number of appealing agent incentives. And, as usual, there’s the latest airline cruise, hotel, and tour operator tidbits, plus much more.

NEWS

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority says it will impose a “hard limit” on how many commercial planes arrive at and depart from Pearson International at any given hour during March break and the summer season, thereby spreading demand out over the course of each day. It will also put a ceiling on the number of passengers that can arrive from abroad or depart to the US within a given 60-minute period.

Porter Aviation is partnering with Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) to develop a new terminal capable of serving over 4 million passengers annually. Construction is scheduled for completion by late 2024, providing a second airport for Porter to serve the Montreal market. More than 10 potential YHU routes have been initially identified by Porter, from Vancouver to St. John’s, Nfld. The airline also intends to connect YHU with both Toronto’s island airport and Pearson.

Toronto travel agency World Travel Inc. has had its registration under the Travel Industry Act, 2002 revoked. TICO says a Licence Appeal Tribunal found that company’s operator would accept consumer funds to book airline tickets, but that  the requested airline tickets were not booked and the consumers were presented with falsified booking documents. The agency is said to have failed to properly handle consumer funds held in trust, failed to comply with record-keeping obligations, and did not cooperate with TICO inspectors.

A new entry process that allows for the electronic processing of air travel to Saint Lucia is designed to reduce the processing time of arriving passengers. The electronic Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) can replace the written form (which may still be presented) and filed in advance. Go to www.stlucia.org/entry for details.

Hong Kong lifted its mask mandate on March 1, ending the city’s last major restriction imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city’s chief executive, John Lee, said masks are no longer required for residents or travellers both outdoors and indoors, including on public transit.

Hotels and Resorts Across Asia with their Own Farms

Cam Ranh Resort Grows Its Own Food at New Onsite Farm

In an effort to realize more self-sufficiency and sustainability at Alma Resort, landscape manager Ngo Duc Thinh and his team have transformed parts of the 30-hectare resort into a 1000sqm nursery garden, a 260sqm chicken farm and a 180sqm herb garden. The nursery garden is teeming with bananas, coconuts, papaya, squash, passionfruit, sunflowers, daisies and more. The adjacent chicken farm is home to a growing brood of hens, roosters and chicks. Outside beachfront restaurant Atlantis, the herb garden brims with mustard leaves, morning glory, red and green chili peppers, Vietnamese basil, lettuce, green onions, white radish, bok choy, tomatoes and more. All the farm’s produce is directed to the resort’s restaurants. Bananas, coconuts and eggs are served during breakfast. Lettuce and mustard leaves are included in salads and coconuts are provided as drinks at Atlantis. Italian restaurant La Casa’s traditional caprese salad features tomatoes from the herb garden with locally produced mozzarella cheese.

To Plant, to Raise and to Understand on Phuket

Trisara, an exclusive hideaway in Phuket’s unspoiled northwestern corner, is notable among resorts in Thailand for its sustainability philosophy. And this ethos is to the fore in its Michelin-garlanded F&B that encompasses PRU—the only Michelin-starred restaurant on Phuket—and Jampa, a zero-waste venue leading the charge for sustainable dining on the island. Locavore inclinations reach a delicious crescendo at Pru. The venue’s name – an acronym for Plant. Raise. Understand. – provides a solid clue as to its overriding creed. Jampa, meanwhile, takes Trisara’s “Dine Good, Do Good” motto to a logical conclusion with its zero-waste cuisine. The beating heart of this philosophy is Pru Jampa, Trisara’s 16,000-square-metre farm. The treasure trove of a garden is a culinary playground bursting with aromas and flavours to be utilised by award winning chefs Jimmy Ophorst (Pru) and Rick Dingen (Jampa). Here chickens are raised for their eggs, fish is farmed sustainably, and myriad fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs are cultivated. All together, along with rotating their crops, this creates a sustainable ecosystem to nourish the land and to support the local economy.

Onsite Farm’s Produce Feeds Resort’s Guests and Staff

The Anam Cam Ranh has dedicated 8500sqm of its 12 beachfront hectares to an array of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and chicken and duck eggs for meals for guests and staff. The resort’s chefs incorporate ingredients from the resort’s farm such as morning glory, malabar spinach, corn, mustard green, and wild betel leaves in meals served to guests at Lang Viet Restaurant & Bar as well as at the staff kitchen. The farm’s variety of vegetables also include lettuce, cucumber, green onion, and cassava root. Custard apple, papaya, banana, mango, cac fruit and bitter melon are among the farm’s fruits. Herbs grown include basil, coriander, thyme, mint, imperata cylindrica, and plantago asiatica. In addition to ducks and chickens, the farm also features geese, rabbits, goats, guinea fowls, turkeys and peacocks. Children are welcome to visit the farm as part of a supervised program to learn more about sustainable farming.

Buffalo Manage the Margins at a Mid-Coast Golf Course

Located in a part of Vietnam renowned for its pristine nature, Laguna Lang Co prides itself on having a strong focus on sustainability. And part of this drive is an extensive organic farm which utilizes worm farming as the source of nutrition. The farm provides fresh produce for the F&B outlets at award winning resorts Banyan Tree Lang Co and Angsana Lang Co. It is supported by a range of other agricultural initiatives: not least Laguna Lang Co’s famous bovine greenkeepers. Water buffaloes help to manage the seven-hectares of rice fields located right in the middle of the Sir Nick Faldo Signature course by eating excess weeds and crops in the area that would otherwise require machinery and manpower to maintain. Not only do the animals provide a vital service in tending to the paddies, they supply an additional appealing optic to one of the most eye-catching sections of a golf course that is already strong on visual manna. The rice-fields, though, are not just for show. Harvested twice a year, they yield up to 20 tons of rice that are used to support the organic farm at Laguna Lang Co and donated to families and seniors in the area.

Willow’s Garden Grows from Strength to Strength

What began as a spice garden in response to a shortage of vegetables during an ongoing COVID-19 lockdown has blossomed into a self-sustainable half-acre space dubbed ‘Willow’s Garden’ on Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort’s grounds. The team at the beachfront resort on Vietnam’s southern coastline started the project in 2021, planting a few fast-growing vegetables and spices for use in lunches at the staff canteen in a bid to be more self-sufficient during the pandemic. The 1700sqm that surrounds a 300sqm lake harbors an array of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, such as grapefruit, pomegranate, cucumber, eggplant, ginger, coriander, and sunflowers, all free from chemicals and additives. The resort expects to develop a specialized menu embracing a plant-to-plate philosophy in its restaurants, and a program giving guests the chance to cultivate their own mini-garden at home by learning the fruitful tips and tricks deployed by staff. Guests will also be encouraged to rummage through the garden to pick ingredients such as fresh herbs to use when crafting their own dishes before indulging them as part of Muoi restaurant’s “Cook & Dine” cooking class. The resort will also roll out fun, free gardening activities for guests such as painting pots, flower puzzling, leaf crafts, and making herb-infused essential oils.

‘360° Cuisine’ Program to Shrink Carbon Footprint

Meliá Chiang Mai is embracing sustainability and promoting healthy eating with its ‘360° Cuisine’ concept, under which executive chef Suksant Chutinthratip (Billy) crafts dishes that include produce from the hotel’s organic farm and use every part of each ingredient possible before leftovers are returned to the farm as compost. Meliá Chiang Mai has partnered with ORI9IN The Gourmet Farm, a 350-acre gourmet organic farm located in nearby San Sai District, to grow an array of fruits, vegetables and herbs on a two-acre plot on the broader ORI9IN property for its restaurants, bars and spa.  “Our ‘farm to plate’ efforts, sourcing organic produce that travels only a short distance to our hotel and using every part of each ingredient we can – roots, leaves, stems, stalks and more – come full circle with ‘plate to farm’, whereby we return food waste back to the farm as fertilizer in a truly 360° concept,” Billy said. Through the partnership with ORI9IN, local farmers assist the hotel with import substitution, growing various kinds of tomatoes, salad leaves, and specialized ingredients such as padrón pepper, that would otherwise need to be imported from Spain for the hotel’s authentic Mediterranean cuisine. The hotel’s kitchen works closely with local farmers to help them improve sustainability and encourage ethical production, in a bid to make communities and the overall food system more resilient.

A Huge Hands-on Resort Farm Kids Love Along Vietnam’s coast

Fusion Resort Cam Ranh, on Vietnam’s south central coast, boasts one of the largest resort farms in Vietnam – with more than 250 animals, a mango orchard, and a herb & vegetable garden of more than 3,000 square meters producing over 40 kg of fresh organic vegetables daily. The resort established the Fusion Farm school in 2020 where they teach classes daily, on a complimentary basis, to guests and employees’ children on how to care for animals and grow vegetables. Children also enjoy collecting their own eggs for breakfast.  All of their wet raw food waste is used to feed the animals, resulting in zero removal of waste from the property.

A Bali Resort Farm is Abuzz

Melia Bali, an oceanfront property situated along the pristine coastline of Nusa Dua in Bali, has been abuzz in recent months with the addition of bee hives to its impressive 1,000 sqm organic garden. The beekeeping initiative was introduced to support pollination, biodiversity, and a healthy ecosystem, within the garden, and also on a more broader scale. A range of vegetables, spices, herbs, fruit and a mini paddy field can also be found in the Chef’s Garden of this tropical island.

A Picturesque and Practical Design Helps Feed Locals and Guests in Mai Chau

The mountainside property, Avana Retreat Mai Chau, embraces its local roots – literally. The team recently launched their own natural, pesticide-free garden, where they grow a vast selection of herbs and vegetables that appear on guests’ plates. From chayote to coriander many typical Vietnamese flavors can be found in the new vegetable patch. Also on site is a free-range chicken farm where around 500 chickens enjoy a spacious home, while supplying the kitchen with an abundance of eggs. And while the picturesque terraced rice fields that cascade throughout the property are a stunning design element, they’re also working rice paddies tended to by the local community.

A Vegetable Garden Experience With a Passionate Chef in Bali

While most of the produce at Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana, comes from a thriving vegetable garden, elements on each plate aren’t restricted to what can be found in the produce patch. Chef Dean, the head chef at the property who is behind this vast organic garden, likes to make the most of what can also be found throughout the lush grounds of the property, collecting herbs and spices such as the bark from cinnamon trees on-site. Tarragon, garlic chives, oregano, marjoram, lemon balm, cinnamon basil, Vietnamese coriander, turmeric, and vegetables from okra to eggplants, along with fruits ranging from limes to durian, are just some of what is grown at the property and a tour with the chef of his abundant yield is a must-do for passionate foodies.

Ambassador Cruise to Launch New Day Cruise in Halong Bay - TRAVELINDEXHalong Bay, Vietnam, March 3, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Ambassador Cruise is heralding the dawn of a new day in cruising Halong Bay, with the launch of a day cruise on a new vessel with restaurants and bars, an outdoor jacuzzi and a striking glass bridge.

The five-star line behind the UNESCO World Heritage site’s most sublime cruise experiences began the day-long ‘Ambassador Day Cruise II’ tours on February 10 this year.

Elegantly designed, the ship features spacious sundecks across two floors that total 324sqm and 250sqm, affording 360-degree vistas of Halong Bay and its myriad limestone karsts. Two restaurants, two bars, an entertainment area for live music, and the large open-air jacuzzi are among the 45-cabin vessel’s top-notch facilities. The five-metre glass bridge jutting from the vessel’s bow inspires compelling photographs.

The 500-ton five-floor steel craft with a basement measures 90 meters long, 16 meters wide and 19 meters high, making it the largest and most luxurious ship to ever ply Halong Bay’s waters with a total of 10,000sqm of lettable space. Ambassador Cruise is the only Halong Bay cruise line to include an elevator system for the elderly and people with disabilities.

The itinerary includes exploration of Sung Sot Cave, a delectable buffet lunch while the vessel’s route plys a passage by Ho Dong Tien Cave, Trong Cave, Me Cung Cave and Cua Van Floating Village. The cruise anchors off Titov Island whose scalable heights offer panoramic views of the bay. Afternoon tea is served on the vessel’s sundeck. Guests return to Halong International Cruise Port at 4:30pm.

A round-trip shuttle bus links Hanoi with Halong Bay via an expressway that opened in 2018, cutting the drive time between the destinations in half to two hours.

Nguyen Cao Son, founder of Asia Premier Cruises Corporation, which owns Ambassador Cruise, said February was the right time to launch the day cruise, following the world’s reopening and 2018’s launch of both the expressway and Van Don International Airport, located 50km from Halong Bay.

“The day cruise opens up Halong Bay in an exciting new way for many travelers, particularly those who can’t squeeze an overnight cruise into their schedule and yet now have the opportunity to experience this breathtakingly beautiful destination in style in a day,” he said.

Since launching its first vessel in 2021, Ambassador Cruise has made a name for itself as the leading luxury cruise operator on Halong Bay and also offers overnight cruises.
