NEWS

The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear an appeal from several airlines, including Air Canada and Porter, as well as IATA, looking to quash rules that boost compensation to passengers for delayed flights or damaged luggage. The carriers, argue that Canada’s four-year-old passenger rights charter violates global standards and should be rendered invalid for international flights.

With a controversial new board model set to take effect, TICO is accepting applications for two new travel industry director positions on its board. Deadline is today (Aug. 21). Record hot ocean temperatures and a tardy El Nino are doubling the chances of a nasty Atlantic hurricane season this summer and fall. With the Atlantic hurricane season already well above normal so far, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration increased how many storms to expect and how busy the season can get. The agency says there’s a 60% chance for an above normal hurricane season, twice the agency’s May forecast which said it was 30%.

BY THE NUMBERS

VISIT FLORIDA announced the strongest international visitation numbers that Florida has seen since 2019. And that includes nearly 846,000 Canadians to date in 2023 – a whopping 81.1% ahead of the same period in 2022. Florida continues to beat records with annual visitation with 70.8 million visitors in 2023 – 4.5% above 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

AIR

The addition of twice-weekly non-stop service between Kelowna and Toronto has been added to WestJet for its 2023/24 winter schedule. The service will begin Nov. 5. Eastbound flights will operate Mondays and Fridays with departures at 10 a.m. (arriving 5:13 p.m.). From Toronto, service will be Sundays and Thursdays departing at 7:30 p.m. (arriving 9.24 p.m.)

Air Transat will offer exclusive direct flights to Lima, Peru, from both Montreal and Toronto this winter. Toronto-Lima flights will be operated twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from Dec. 20 to April 24; in addition, Montreal-Lima flights will be operated once weekly, on Fridays, from Dec. 22 to April 26.

The government of Mexico says it plans to revive the Mexicana name for its new airline, which will be run by the country’s military starting in September. The airline is looking at 20 potential routes between Mexico City and large and mid-size Mexican cities, some of which have limited service at present, as well as tourist resorts like Cancun. Tickets are expected to be 18 to 20% below private competitors. The airline has been named Mexicana after the partly state-owned carrier that went into bankruptcy in 2010 and closed.

Travel agents can start booking their clients’ 2024 getaways at two new Princess Hotels luxury all-inclusive beachfront resorts in Jamaica with Sunwing Vacations.

Opening in April, the family-friendly Princess Grand Jamaica, available exclusively to Sunwing, and the adults-only Princess Senses the Mangrove, will also earn agents STAR Rewards Points on bookings that can be converted to cash.

Club Med has unveiled new renovations and extensions to its flagship Village, Club Med Punta Cana. L’Hispaniola, the main beachfront restaurant, has been completely transformed, showcasing Punta Cana’s colourful culture, while the resort’ s 90 family rooms, 48 Superior rooms and 36 Deluxe rooms have been renovated and specially designed for families. The Village will also now boast a new space dedicated to weddings and a beauty salon in collaboration with renowned L’Occitane products.

TOURS

Air Canada Vacations is implementing a new commission policy designed to offer agents enhanced financial protection and stability. Travel agents are now be entitled to receive standard commission on any cancelled individual bookings made 45 days or more prior to departure (Cancelled with Deposit), with the exception of cruise and group bookings. The tour operator will also protect full commission on any schedule change that provides no option of reprotection and results in a cancelled booking.

Railbookers is registering a spike in demand for travel in the latter half of 2023, with more than half of all bookings in the last six weeks departing before the end of December, reports the rail specialist tour operator. According to data beginning July 1, nearly 54% of Railbookers’ bookings were for trips with departure dates in 2023. Among its Canadian customers, Railbookers is seeing top destinations booked including Portugal, Italy, Ireland, and Spain.

CRUISE

Proclaiming it the line’s “most engaging family activity zone ever,” Princess Cruises’ ‘Sun Princess’ will debut Park19 (photo rendering) when it sets sail next February, in addition to new youth and teen centres. Located on the top decks of Sun Princess, Park19 will feature nine activities for the entire family, ranging from the first “rollglider” on cruise ship to a climbing structure, tilting wall lookout, splash zone, jogging track and more.

Norwegian Cruise Line has welcomed the first guests to sail aboard its new Norwegian Viva, the company’s highly anticipated new ship and second of the Prima Class, as it embarked on its maiden voyage from Venice (Trieste), Italy.

The ship will sail a selection of Greek Isles and Mediterranean voyages through November, before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December for a season in the Caribbean.

ATTRACTIONS & THEME PARKS

A new restaurant in Disneyland Park, Tiana’s Palace will open on Sept. 7. Inspired by the restaurant Tiana created in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Princess and the Frog,” the reimagined quick-service style location will include subtle references to Tiana’s story and her rich past in New Orleans with a menu that features new items honouring the flavours and flair of the city, with an effort to source some ingredients directly from the state of Louisiana when possible.

EVENTS

Air Canada Vacations’ has announced dates for its annual Dream Makers product launches this fall, with events set to take place in five Canadian cities, starting Sept. 6 at the Cedar Event Centre in Halifax. The shows will highlight the tour company’s just-released ACV’s 2023/24 “Dream of Sun” digital brochure. Travel agents are invited to attend the trade show galas, which will also take place in Vancouver on Sept. 12 (Marriott); Edmonton, Sept. 14 (Marriott); Montreal, Sept. 19 (Congress Montreal), and Toronto, Sept. 21 (Universal Events). All events will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and feature an evening of cocktails, prizes, and live entertainment, as well as a presentation from ACV about the just-released 2023/24 collection.

Globus family of brands had announced a new leadership position for company’s Canadian team, with industry veteran Denise Harper joining the brands as senior director of sales. Most recently director of partner relations for Virtuoso Travel, Harper joins the Canadian leadership team of Carla Brake; Ainsley Ericksen and Swagat Pandya with a mandate to reinforce sales and trade relationships across the country.

TravelBrands renewed its commitment to the SickKids Foundation and its mission by bringing back its annual SickKids Day. Building on the successful partnership established in 2016, TravelBrands pledged to donate 1% of all sales made on Aug 16, to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto.

WTTC Predicts Germany Tourism Sector to Rebound Fast - TRAVELINDEX - GLOBALTOURISMFORUM.comBerlin, Germany, August 17, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2023 Economic Impact Research (EIR) today reveals Germany’s Travel & Tourism sector is recovering at pace to recover to within 95% of pre-pandemic levels.

The sector is set to contribute €355BN to the national economy this year, getting to within 95% of the 2019 highpoint, and representing 9.3% of the economy. WTTC is also forecasting that the sector will create more than 168,000 jobs this year, recovering most of the jobs lost due to the COVID 19 pandemic to reach 5.6MN.

A look back on last year

Last year, the Travel & Tourism sector’s GDP contribution grew by 43.4% to reach more than €338BN, representing 8.8% of the economy, edging closer to the 2019 high of €374BN.

Last year the sector also created 550,000 more jobs from the previous year to reach 5.4MN jobs nationally – one in eight jobs across Germany.
The sector has now recovered over 50% of the 1MN jobs lost during the pandemic.

Last year also saw the return of international travellers heading to Germany with spending from overseas visitors growing 61% to reach almost €31BN.

Domestic visitor spend is within touching distance of the pre-pandemic level of €307.8BN and is currently €304.4BN, a year-on-year increase of 49%.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “The Travel & Tourism sector in Germany is making a strong recovery. It will contribute €355BN to the German economy this year and employ one in eight jobs across the country.

“Germany is forecast to remain the fifth most popular tourism destination in Europe over the next decade, demonstrating its enduring appeal.”

What does the next decade look like?

The global tourism body is forecasting that the sector will grow its GDP contribution to more than €440BN by 2033, 10.3% of the overall economy and will employ almost 6.1MN people across the country, with one in seven Germans working in the sector.

Europe

In 2022, the European Travel & Tourism sector contributed €1.9TN to the regional economy, just 7% below the 2019 peak. WTTC forecasts the region’s GDP contribution from the sector will reach more than €2TN in 2023 – within touching distance of the 2019 highpoint.

The sector employed almost 35MN people across the region in 2022, an increase of 2.9MN from the previous year but still 3.2MN behind pre-pandemic levels. WTTC forecasts the sector will fully recover the jobs lost during the pandemic by the end of 2024.

Mauritius Standard Bureau is now GSTC-Accredited - TRAVELINDEXPort-Louis, Mauritius, August 15, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is pleased to announce that Mauritius Standard Bureau (MSB) has gained the GSTC-Accredited Certification Body status.

The Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB), a non-profit Mauritius Standards Bureau parastatal body in the island of Mauritius, has embarked on a project to provide third-party certification to tourism businesses with the aim of boosting the local tourism industry towards sustainability.

After having developed its own Mauritian Standard (MS 165:2019) for Sustainable Tourism, which has gained recognition from the GSTC in 2019, MSB has successfully completed all the steps towards accreditation.

The stated scope of the GSTC Accreditation of Mauritius Standards Bureau is for certifying hotels/accommodations and tour operators in Mauritius according to the Mauritian Standard on Sustainable Tourism: Blue Oasis (MS 165:2019).

Achieving the GSTC-Accredited status means that a Certification Body has been verified to be conducting proper certification of businesses, such as hotels or tour operators, in a competent and neutral manner, following processes and procedures detailed in the GSTC Accreditation Manual.

Mauritius Businesses certified by a GSTC-Accredited Certification Body, meeting all the GSTC Criteria (or a GSTC-Recognized Standard), have the highest level of assurance* and credibility available. With an accredited certification, customers and buyers are assured that the business was certified in a credibly verified procedure in a transparent, impartial, and competent manner.

Attesting to that, those businesses certified by a GSTC-Accredited Certification Body can display a unique GSTC logo with a traceable code. The purpose of the GSTC Accreditation is to provide a higher level of assurance and reward genuine practitioners of sustainable tourism, which builds confidence and credibility with consumers.

The Accreditation process usually takes more than a year to complete, as GSTC looks very hard at the Certification Body’s operation and its process of certification to assure that they issue certifications based on merit and neutrality.

The GSTC Accreditation Manual for Certification of Mauritius Hotel/Accommodation & Tour Operator provides detailed technical requirements for certification of Hotel/Accommodation and Tour Operator. Certification Bodies are required to comply with ISO 17065 Conformity Assessment (Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services) and GSTC specific requirements. Among these requirements are impartial and competent certification procedures, auditor experience and qualifications, certification decision making, rigorous surveillance of certified businesses, and proper promotion of their services.

“GTSC Accreditation is a mark of quality that the GSTC places on Certification Bodies that choose to provide formal evidence of compliance to the GSTC Accreditation Manual for rigorous and impartial certification. New TIA Tours Introduce Wellness Practices in VietnamA holistic resort in Da Nang is taking wellbeing out of its wellness center through a handful of curated experiences for mind, body, and soul at nearby points of spiritual and cultural significance. TIA Wellness Resort, situated along Da Nang’s picturesque coastline, has drawn on its four core wellness pillars: Nourish, Flow, Breathe, Create to reimagine excursions to local sites, bringing in a wellness twist.

Breathe – Meditate with Lady Buddha

At the towering Lady Buddha statue that presides over the Son Tra Peninsula, the breath is the key element added to the mix. Guests leave early for a relaxing exploration of Linh Ung Pagoda, an active place of worship that is the largest in Da Nang, before a guided meditation session in the grounds with a focus on the breath. After the mindful practice the excursion takes in the main Lady Buddha statue, the tallest in the country and a symbol of peace and prosperity, before returning to the resort. The whole experience takes place from 6:00am – 8:30am, before the bustle of the day.

Flow – Marble Mountain Hike and Tai Chi Amid the Caves

Nearby the resort are the Marble Mountains, five karsts named for the five elements. The sacred spot, peppered with pagodas and shrines, ancient statues and deep, lofty caves, is accessed by a time-worn 200-step stone staircase winding up the mountainside. At the top, and before the crowds set in, there is an abundance of tranquil spaces ideal for a deeply peaceful Tai Chi practice led by the TIA guide. The two-hour excursion, designed with movement in mind, is held from 6:30am – 8:30am.

Nourish – An Organic Village Excursion and Healthy Cooking Class

Nourishment permeates TIA’s food philosophy, with its Eat Light, Feel Bright, food concept and a focus on whole food and predominantly plant-based dishes. TIA’s new Nourish experience is a bridge between the healthy focus at the property and the local organic farming community. This 3.5 tour starts with a trip to Tra Que Village to learn about local agriculture and the delicious Vietnamese herbs and spices that make the cuisine so distinct. Guests pick out the ingredients that will later be used to make Wellness Spring Rolls and Wellness Banh Xeo (Vietnamese-style savory pancake) in a hands-on cooking class held at the resort. The tour takes place from 10:30am – 2:00pm, with guests sitting down for a meal of their creations afterwards.

Create – A Traditional Vietnamese Calligraphy Experience

With a traditional Vietnamese calligraphy session TIA is building on the creativity focus that it encourages through its on-site art sessions while introducing a traditional practice that is imbued with mindfulness. The three-hour afternoon session starts at 1:30pm with a visit to a calligraphy museum and chat with a calligraphy master. Guests will get to keep their creation as a reminder of the experience.

Each TIA tour is from VND 1,500,000++ per person and they are offered daily, subject to availability.
