Gran Meliá Set to Conquer Milan with Palazzo Cordusio Opening

900 600 wttc2

Gran Meliá Set to Conquer Milan with Palazzo Cordusio Opening - TOP25HOTELS.comGran Meliá ushers in a new era with the opening of Palazzo Cordusio, a flagship property residing within an icon of nineteenth century Italian design, this month. Providing a gateway to Milan’s rich culture and iconic landmarks, the hotel is set to become the city’s new gourmet hotspot and social hub thanks to the partnership with the leading international company Sunset Hospitality Group, boasting globally inspired fine dining concepts and an unmatched central location.

Palazzo Cordusio, A Gran Meliá hotel, is primely positioned in Piazza Cordusio, one of the city’s most iconic squares. The luxury hotel is housed within the historic Palazzo Venezia – jewel of the Assicurazioni Generali heritage and for over a century the company’s Milanese headquarters – and marks Gran Meliá’s Milanese debut, joining its Italian sister property in Rome, Villa Agrippina.

As the second Gran Meliá hotel, and fourth luxury property in Italy, the opening of Palazzo Cordusio further strengthens Meliá Hotels International’s presence in the destination as a key player in the luxury hospitality segment.

Timeless Design

Originally constructed between 1897 and 1901 by Generali, Palazzo Venezia’s eclectic design sought inspiration from the architect Luca Beltrami, and played a pivotal role in the restoration of the area between the late 19th and early 20th century. The reopening under the aegis of Meliá Hotels International (MHI) will be the driving force behind today’s redevelopment of Piazza Cordusio, which promises to hand back one of the city’s key cultural hubs to the Milanese people, symbolically connecting the Duomo with the Sforzesco Castle, whilst inviting international travellers to discover its storied past.

The recent renovation project was managed by Generali Real Estate and MHI with the support of Studio Marco Piva, who handled the design and the artistic direction of the external facades and of all portions subject to monumental restrictions, the interior architecture and courtyard. In an effort to consciously conserve as much of the building as possible, the grand staircase became the protagonist, and its marble walls and floors maintained and restored to their former splendour, as were the original portal with the Generali Assicurazioni heading and the mosaic lunette with the Providence allegory. These are precious evidence of the previous function of the building, whose aesthetics have been reported on all the portals of the historical scale and in those created from scratch to maintain stylistic coherence throughout the hotel. The renovated building is now part of Generali’s European real estate portfolio.

Following the transformation of the building’s internal spaces 84 rooms and suites have been created, each of which preserves protected elements, whilst elevating the areas for their new intended use. The luxury accommodations are characterised by imposing windows and in some cases private balconies which provide abundant natural lighting and unique views of Piazza Cordusio, via Orefici, via dei Mercanti and the Duomo.

Studio Asah by Alvaro and Adriana Sans, MHI’s long-standing partner, was entrusted with the interior design of the rooms and communal areas, favouring a sophisticated and contemporary style to provide the perfect base for a truly memorable stay in the heart of Milan. All rooms and suites, as well as some corridors, are embellished with Rubelli fabrics to pay homage to Generali’s Venetian roots, while soft furnishings include iconic pieces from some of Italy’s most emblematic brands such as Molteni, Cassina, Fornasetti, Flos, Oluce and Foscarini.

Delectable Fine Dining

Renowned for creating unique experiences worldwide, Sunset Hospitality Group has grown to become a leading lifestyle hospitality group, currently operating across sixteen countries. They will oversee the hotel’s culinary offerings to bring guests together through food.

The Group will introduce four exceptional home-grown concepts to the hotel’s dining scene with the debut of Gioia Pasticceria, Giardino Cordusio, Isola Restaurant, and SACHI:

  • Gioia: located on the ground floor with views overlooking the Square, Gioia Pasticceria is created in collaboration with master baker Fabio Bertoni to offer the experience of an authentic Pasticceria.
  • Giardino Cordusio: the Italian cocktail bar located in the internal courtyard of the hotel is a joint project with Giancarlo Mancino, award-winning consulting barman and official partner of The World’s 50 Best Bars. The concept will offer exceptional cocktail creations featuring two stand-out elements created by Giancarlo: an impressively designed Martini “Altare” where a wide range of the signature Martini cocktails will be prepared, as well as the Negroni Alfresco, that will be stored for at least 30 days in a 30 litre amphora.
  • Isola: led by Brand Chef Francesco Bagnato, Isola will bring a unique dining experience to Milan offering Italian favourites inspired by the Southern islands of Italy, along with an extensive selection of wines. The restaurant boasts a spacious terrace overlooking Palazzo della Ragione and Piazza Mercanti. The brand was recently recognized in the Michelin Guide and has established a global presence in key destinations including Dubai, Bodrum, Marbella, and Morocco.
  • SACHI: already well established in London, SACHI is set to take centre stage on the Milanese dining scene under the guidance of acclaimed Chef Moon Kyung Soo, whose impressive career includes leading award-winning concepts such as SUSHISAMBA Dubai and Attiko. The Japanese restaurant will offer an Omakase counter, a large dining area, and an expansive garden space overlooking the Duomo. SACHI promises to take guests on a captivating journey through Japan’s diverse and exquisite flavours, emphasising local and seasonal ingredients all year round.

Guests can also access an intimate wellness area with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and relaxation lounge; alongside a state-of-the-art gym complete with Technogym equipment and a full-width view of the Palazzo della Ragione and Piazza Mercanti.

The arrival of the first Gran Meliá branded hotel in Milan, and second in Italy after the success of Villa Agrippina in Rome, represents an important milestone for MHI. The opening further solidifies the country’s importance in the group’s luxury development pipeline, which includes the addition of a fifth hotel in Milan by 2024, as part of The Meliá Collection.

Melia Hotels Announces Ambitious Expansion for Luxury Portfolio

900 543 wttc2

Melia Hotels Announces Ambitious Expansion for Luxury Portfolio - World's Best Luxury Hotels only at TOP25HOTELS.comMeliá Hotels International, Spain’s leading hotel group and the third largest in Europe, has announced the ambitious global expansion of its luxury brands, with one in three of its pipeline openings within its luxury hotel and resort portfolio. From Europe and Africa to Central America, Meliá brings its signature Spanish hospitality to some of the world’s most captivating locations, with each development offering luxury experiences responsibly.

In 2023, Meliá added to its portfolio of hotels in Tanzania with the opening of Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection – a design-led lodge in one of the most biodiverse places on the planet – and celebrated the Paradisus by Meliá brand landing in Europe with openings in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Continuing the commitment to global expansion and growth of its luxury portfolio, Meliá is preparing to open the doors to some of its most ambitious and luxurious hotels yet: Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá in Milan, ME by Meliá properties in Lisbon and Malta, and ZEL, a new lifestyle brand and joint venture with tennis legend, Rafael Nadal.

GRAN MELIÁ GROWS INTERNATIONALLY

The global growth of Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts is key in reinforcing Meliá’s positioning in the luxury sector. Dedicated to creating cultural enrichment, Gran Meliá will continue its expansion into Europe and Southeast Asia with hotels in Albania, Spain, Italy, and Vietnam.

The highly anticipated Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá will open its doors in December 2023, in the historic heart of Milan. A landmark opening for the brand as its first Milanese hotel, Palazzo Cordusio will occupy the lovingly restored 19th-Century Palazzo Venezia, one of the city’s most iconic Renaissance buildings and formerly the headquarters of Assicurazioni Generali, close to the Piazza del Duomo and Castello Sforzesco. A haven for gourmands, the hotel will house a chic patisserie, bistro, cocktail bar, and a stylish rooftop bar and terrace with spectacular Duomo views. Blending Italian flair with Meliá’s signature Spanish hospitality, Palazzo Cordusio offers a gateway to Milan’s great cultural heritage, telling the city’s illustrious story and ensuring guests experience the vibrant destination beyond what meets the eye through a selection of curated experiences: shop in the famous Vittorio Emanuele galleries; enjoy opera at La Scala, or see da Vinci’s The Last Supper first-hand.

The luxury brand has also increased its presence in Spain with Torre Melina, A Gran Meliá Hotel. The exclusive urban resort in the heart of Barcelona leverages the heritage of the iconic Rey Juan Carlos Hotel, taking it to a new level with a full renovation.

The brand also entered Southeast Asia with its first opening in Vietnam: Gran Meliá Nha Trang. Effortlessly blending Mediterranean hospitality and Vietnamese charm, the resort stands out as a new luxury landmark and a hub for haute cuisine amidst the tropical beauty of Fairy Mountain, with spectacular views of Turtle Island.

The new property features 94 expansive private pool villas; Asia’s first outpost of the highly acclaimed Spanish restaurant, Hispania, along with four other gastronomic destinations; and indulgent wellness offerings from onsen to spa.

JOURNEY THROUGH TANZANIA

In July, Meliá Hotels International expanded its portfolio of hotels in Africa with the opening of Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection. The design-led lodge adds a fourth to Meliá’s collection of properties in Tanzania, offering a unique journey through distinct cultural pockets of the beautiful, biodiverse country, from Arusha to Serengeti and Zanzibar. Further positioning Meliá as a responsible hotel group with sustainable values, Ngorongoro Lodge was crafted with the utmost respect for the environment and designed in honour of its location. Perched in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for housing the world’s largest volcanic crater, the 56-room lodge aims to protect and preserve the natural ecosystem and culture of the local Massai tribe. 95% of all products used across the property are acquired in neighbouring villages, and the hotel produces its own water through a bottling plant.

The experiences are what makes this lodge so special: discover Ngorongoro Crater with a full-day Game Drive, rubbing shoulders with the resident wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, visit a traditional Massai house, or boma, and learn about local culture first-hand, or take to the skies with an unforgettable Balloon Safari over the famed Ndutu Region.

ME BY MELIÁ MEETS MEXICO, MALTA, AND LISBON

Dynamic, stylish, and rooted in culture, art, fashion, and gastronomy, ME by Meliá brings destination, design, and service together to deliver personal, enriching experiences. Located in global, cultural epicentres, 2024 will see new ME properties launch in Mexico, Malta, and Lisbon.

Opening in the heart of the historic Portuguese capital in 2024, ME Lisbon will showcase the brand’s signature avant-garde design and high-quality services, as well as top-notch gastronomic concepts, a Radio Rooftop Bar with panoramic views, and over 600m2 of meeting and event space. Also opening in 2024, ME Malta will become the city’s new social and cultural epicentre, in the coastal town of St Julians (east coast). Designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the hotel will feature 14o rooms and suites, innovative culinary offerings, and Radio Rooftop Bar.

ME Sayulita will bring ME’s signature style and innovative cultural programming to the famous Playa de Carricitos, featuring 125 rooms and villas and, true to the brand philosophy, an avant-garde luxury experience, with three restaurants, swimming pool, spa, and a rooftop bar with pool and beach club. This will be the third luxury lifestyle brand hotel in Mexico, joining ME Cabo and the future ME Guadalajara, and bolsters Meliá Hotels International’s wider expansion into Mexico, where it is expected to double its presence in the next two years.

DESTINATION INCLUSIVE LANDS IN EUROPE

The Paradisus by Meliá brand brings its unique Destination Inclusive concept to Europe, with new openings in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Taking the all-inclusive concept to a whole new level, at Paradisus by Meliá, the destination is at the heart of the experience, and each hotel immerses guests in its captivating locale. Paradisus Gran Canaria, which opened its doors in 2023, is located in a lush, natural environment on San Agustín Beach, and combines luxury with local culture and nature, with immersive experiences included as part of the innovative Destination Inclusive concept: explore the Cueva Pintada Archaeological Park, taste Spain’s most famous rums with private tastings, or head out on guided hikes.

The recently opened Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote is a true architectural treasure, designed by the renowned Spanish architect, Fernando Higueras. Surrounded by the breathtaking beaches of Costa Teguise and charming villages steeped in local culture, Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote offers unparalleled exploration of the island, a biosphere reserve, with its lunar landscapes, volcanoes, unspoiled beaches, picturesque villages, and areas of natural beauty, all included as part of the Destination Inclusive offering.

Noteworthy openings for Meliá also include those from ZEL, a new lifestyle brand created in collaboration with Rafael Nadal. Inspired by the welcoming homes, outdoor culture, and lifestyle of the Mediterranean, ZEL made its debut in Mallorca in summer 2023 and will continue an ambitious growth plan, starting with ZEL Sayulita in Mexico, projected to open in 2025.

EXPANSION WITH A CONSCIENCE

Sustainability is at the heart of Meliá’s ethos, and corporate responsibility and responsible tourism play a key part in the development of the group’s luxury portfolio, with each new opening committed to caring for its local community. Setting a benchmark for sustainable hospitality, the opening of Villa Le Blanc Gran Meliá in 2022 saw the group unveil its first prototype in terms of efficiency and environmental responsibility. Menorca’s first grand luxe hotel has earned multiple awards since, and contributes to Meliá’s accolade as the most sustainable hotel company in Spain and Europe by S&P.

The company has also begun implementing its new sustainable event initiative: Road to Net Zero Events. This project is the result of technology developed in collaboration with Creast, a company that specialises in measuring, reducing and offsetting the environmental impact of events, which has been tested for the past year in Europe at Meliá Barcelona Sarriá and Meliá Berlin. Road to Net Zero Events, as the name suggests, was developed to find improvement opportunities that would help the company towards the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in events, responding to increasing demand from professionals in the sector.

A POSITIVE OUTLOOK

Meliá Hotels International’s commitment to innovation and brand positioning continued to garner recognition in important industry awards. The group was awarded Best Hotelier of the Year in the Beyond Luxury Awards 2023, with Gran Meliá properties, Palacio de Isora (Tenerife), Hotel de Mar (Mallorca) and Villa Le Blanc (Menorca), honoured in various other categories, with Villa Le Blanc listed among the 10 best luxury hotels in Spain. Villa Le Blanc was also named Best New Hotel of the Year in the Condé Nast Traveller Awards.

André Gerondeau, Chief Operating Officer of Meliá Hotels International said, ‘It’s an exciting time for Meliá as we embark on an ambitious expansion of our prestigious portfolio of luxury hotels, solidifying our global presence. The grand opening of Palazzo Cordusio, our first Gran Meliá property in Milan and restoration of one of the city’s most beautiful and historic buildings, as well as the opening of Ngorongoro Lodge, A Meliá Collection in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, reinforce our preeminent position within the luxury sector. With great anticipation, we set our sights on the year ahead, as we extend our signature Spanish hospitality to discerning travellers around the world.’

Overall, Meliá maintains an incredibly positive outlook for 2024, despite the backdrop of uncertainty and intensified geopolitical tensions. Tourism has only continued to gain momentum post-pandemic and continues to grow steadily, as Meliá reports an incredibly strong third quarter of 2023 with no signs of slowdown as we move into 2024.

About Meliá Hotels International

Hyatt Strengthens Luxury Portfolio with 35+ Planned Hotels and Resorts to Open Through 2025 in Highly Sought-After Destinations Across the Globe.

Driven by care for today’s luxury traveler and their wellbeing priorities, Hyatt elevates its leadership position with an intentional growth strategy across its luxury Timeless, Boundless, Independent, and Inclusive Collection brands

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) shared today Hyatt’s strong development pipeline of more than 35 planned luxury hotels and resorts globally through 2025 across the Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Miraval, Alila, Andaz, Thompson Hotels, and The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brands, as well as Inclusive Collection brands Zoëtry Wellness & Spa Resorts and Dreams Resorts & Spas.

While maintaining its asset-light approach, Hyatt has doubled the number of luxury rooms, tripled the number of resort rooms, and quadrupled the number of lifestyle rooms in only five years. With 70% of its rooms categorized as luxury and upper upscale, the Hyatt portfolio has grown to meet increased demands for luxury and resort accommodations while upholding consistent, top-tier quality, personalized experiences, and bespoke service.

At large, travel and tourism are expected to increase by approximately 12% of global GDP by 2033 according to a recent World Travel & Tourism Council report. In turn, Hyatt’s luxury portfolio is expanding to meet that demand in new international markets. This includes the debut of Park Hyatt hotels in the UK, Mexico, and Malaysia; the Thompson Hotel brand’s expansion in Europe with the first properties in Austria and Italy; the Andaz brand’s growth in the Americas with its first hotel in the Caribbean; The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand’s first properties in the Nordics and India; as well as Hyatt luxury growth in the trending destination of Portugal, with the planned openings of Andaz Lisbon and Dreams Madeira Resort, Spa & Marina.

“The upcoming addition of these new hotels and resorts across our global luxury portfolio in sought-after destinations where travelers want to go most reinforces our leadership in this space,” said Mark Vondrasek, Chief Commercial Officer, Hyatt. “Our continued, purposeful growth in the year ahead will follow an insight-led approach, focused on listening to our guests, customers and World of Hyatt members and their evolving travel needs such as a growing desire for immersive and distinct experiences that prioritize wellbeing.”

A recent Ipsos report found that across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, common factors driving the travel decision-making process are availability of wellbeing offerings (approximately 30% on average) and the opportunity for new experiences (approximately 31% on average). Additionally, through listening to what matters most to guests and members, Hyatt understands that affluent, worldly travelers are seeking luxury hotels that value the purpose of their stay and proactively plan around their needs. In turn, Hyatt luxury hotels take special care in developing one-of-a-kind experiences and excursions curated personally for each guest, including the awe-inspiring, experiential wellbeing programming that they value the most. Notable holistic wellbeing offerings include:

  • A continued commitment to sleep – from a new program across all Hyatt hotels in New Zealand and Australia to a new, comprehensive Sleep Therapy program, teaching guests the art of slumber, at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets.
  • New adventurous experiences focused on showcasing the potential for transformative travel through the Andaz “Be Like No One’s Watching” campaign, coming to life through culinary and mixology masterclasses, musical immersions, onsite tattoo studios and more.
  • Preference for privatization (as a form of “self-care”) is driving villa stays at hotels like Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, Alila Villas Uluwatu, The Cape, A Thompson Hotel, and Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, which participate in Hyatt’s award-winning exclusive travel advisor program, Hyatt Privé.
  • Specialized and immersive spas coming in 2024 at Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo del Sol and Park Hyatt Marrakech that will act as wellness destinations, driving preference amongst Gen Z and Millennials travelers of which more than half would go out of their way to ensure a hotel has a spa, accordingly to Amex 2023 Global Travel Trends report.
  • More options through the recently launched Wellbeing Collective, a collection of 30+ Hyatt properties around the globe that offer tailored wellbeing experiences to meet the specific needs of meetings and events travelers, with plans to expand in 2024.

World of Hyatt recently unveiled reimagined program benefits for members, including newly expanded World of Hyatt Milestone Rewards designed to offer more awards and more choice at more milestones, allowing members to choose earning points for future free nights, enhancing stays with suite upgrades As part of this evolution, eligible travel advisors will be offered new pathways to earn status and milestones and are invited to extend care even further with the ability to gift new and exciting Milestone Rewards as well as Globalist status to clients or colleagues.

Hyatt also continues to grow thoughtfully through acquisitions, expanding its portfolio for guests and members with the recently announced acquisition of Mr & Mrs Smith. The integration planned for the near future will unlock direct booking access to hundreds more boutique and luxury hotels including in 20+ countries where there are currently no Hyatt hotels.

“Hyatt’s luxury growth strategy is purposefully ambitious and in the coming years, we will continue to grow with intent through a focus on key leisure destinations, and top-tier brands’ ability to personalize experiences for each guest, member and client, through care,” added Heidi Kunkel, Senior Vice President Commercial Services, EAME. “We value our relationship with travel advisors and look to work together on finding new ways to advance care for them and their clients through the transformative growth of our luxury offerings and evolving World of Hyatt benefits.”
