RELAIS & CHÂTEAUX ADDS NEW CANADIAN MEMBERS

1080 494 wttc2

Relais & Châteaux has added 27 new members to its list of unique hotels and restaurants for 2023 and two of them are Canadian: pioneering Fogo Island Inn (Newfoundland), and Restaurant La Tanière3 (Rue Saint-Pierre, Old Quebec).

Established in 1954, the R&C consists of 580 establishments in 65 countries that are owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs (most often families) “who are passionate about their craft and deeply committed to forging warm, lasting relationships with their guests.”

Moreover R&C espouses a mandate “to protect and promote the wealth and diversity of the world’s culinary and hospitality traditions, to ensure they continue to thrive. They are equally dedicated to preserving local heritage and the environment.

It adds, “We believe the most meaningful sense of hospitality invites guests to discover the world in profoundly beautiful ways. As such, the standards we set for the association are subtle, sophisticated, and based on emotion. This approach enables guests to truly savor their stay and to treasure its memory.”

Here’s R&C’s (lightly edited) assessment of its newest Canadian members, which bring the number of members in this country to 21 (10 hotels, 11 restaurants):

Relais & Châteaux Fogo Island Inn

• 29 rooms (including 6 suites)
• Full Board rates starting at CDN$2,989 per night
• Gourmet restaurant seats: 30

Fogo Island is the type of place you can’t believe but always hoped existed. The island sits off the northeast coast of Newfoundland and welcomes travellers seeking to reconnect with wild nature and themselves. During full board stays of a minimum of three nights guests can discover the riches of a unique and unspoiled environment through unforgettable adventure activities and cultural experiences. The Inn is a global example of a true regenerative model. Built on the principles of sustainability, it also returns 100% of its operating surpluses to Shorefast, a Canadian charity whose work focuses on community economic development on Fogo Island.

Everything at the Inn has been carefully considered, from the architecture of the building, designed by Newfoundland-born, Norway-based Todd Saunders, to the furniture and colourful furnishings which combine to create a refined oasis of comfort and contemporary style. Overlooking the powerful Atlantic Ocean, the rooms’ floor to ceiling windows allow you to enjoy the magical scenery offered by each of the seven seasons that punctuate the year on the island.

All guests can discover more about the island’s history and culture, as well as visit art and artisan spaces through an orientation with a local Community Host. Chef Timothy Charles’ menu is an expression of the local seasonal foodways, with 80 percent of the ingredients locally sourced. Guests can savour refined dishes in the elegant dining room, as whales breach the surface of the waves, or icebergs drift past. Fogo Island Inn is a destination at the end of the world that you’ll find difficult to leave.”

La Tanière3

La Tanière3

• Seats 50
• Tasting menu (CDN$235) + wine pairings (from 115)

In the centre of Old Quebec City, between the Saint Lawrence River and Place Royale, a destination steeped in history awaits. Built in 1686, the vaulted cellars of the Leber and Charest buildings, among the oldest in the city, now house a gastronomic restaurant which has put la Belle Province on the map for journeying gourmets. Welcome to Relais & Châteaux La Tanière3, the experimental and sensory retreat of chef François-Emmanuel Nicol. Dedicated to promoting local terroir, he works exclusively with local, seasonal ingredients. No imported products, except wine, are on the menu–only the finest Quebecois and Canadian produce are served.

The chef enjoys highlighting little-known products from the region, such as caviar from Lake Saint-Pierre, small cherry tree bark, native plants from Quebec and even Paw Paw, a little-known fruit native to North America with a taste reminiscent of mango. Fans of classic cooking should prepare themselves: surprises are the order of the day.

Two dining experiences are on offer: the first in the elegant dining room with its captivating decor, the second at the Comptoir-Chef (Chef’s Counter), where diners get a front-row seat to watch the kitchen at full swing. In both cases, a tasting menu accompanied by wine – all designed around a rich and aromatic palette–transports guests to the heart of Quebec. With such cuisine dedicated to the preservation of local culinary heritage, it may feel difficult to leave this special ‘lair’ (the translation of ‘tanière).

Laurent Gardinier, President of Relais & Châteaux, stated, “The new members that have joined us in 2023 demonstrate the dynamism of our network as well as our ongoing effort to consolidate the quality and diversity of the guest experience within our properties,” says. “We all share the same vision: to make the world a better place through food and hospitality.”

A new Infinity Pool with multiple lounging decks and a bar has been constructed on the hillside overlooking Sea Grapes Beach. Guests can expect all fixtures, fittings, and furniture to be in perfect condition while the solid doors and windows on beachfront and sea-view rooms have been replaced with glass panels, so the beaches and ocean are always in sight.

Global Leaders Advance Responsible AI Development at Governance Summit

700 401 wttc2

Global Leaders Advance Responsible AI Development at Governance Summit - TOP25RESTAURANTS The World's First AI-Powered Restaurant GuideSan Francisco, California, United States, November 23, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Summit brought together more than 200 influential leaders from the Forum’s AI Governance Alliance (AIGA) and the broader artificial intelligence community to exchange insights and collaborate on the establishment of action plans to promote the responsible development and deployment of generative AI on a global scale.

– More than 200 leaders came together at the World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Summit to promote the responsible development and deployment of generative artificial intelligence.
– Participants called for the establishment of a robust international AI governance framework.
– Topics of discussion included the importance of closing the digital divide and trade-offs in open-source technology.

The event marked a crucial milestone in the ongoing journey of responsible AI development, following the inaugural Responsible AI Leadership conference held in April 2023. The proceedings of that conference led to the publication of the Presidio Recommendations on Responsible Generative AI and the establishment of the AI Governance Alliance, laying the foundation for continued progress in the AI space.

Participants from government, business, academia and civil society emphasized the immense opportunities of integrating AI across diverse sectors, including applications in agriculture and healthcare. They also underscored the pressing need for responsible development and deployment in line with global ethical standards to mitigate potential risks including safety. Key topics of discussion included adaptive and interoperable regulatory frameworks and harmonized standards.

“As we drive innovation in the realm of generative AI, it is important to concurrently navigate existing and novel risks while unlocking unprecedented transformational opportunities, ensuring that progress is responsibly managed for the benefit of global society,” said Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director, World Economic Forum.

Crucially, the conversations extended beyond technologically advanced nations. Participants actively explored strategies to ensure that the benefits of AI development are inclusive, reaching not only developed nations but also those developing countries and regions currently lacking the capacity for independent AI model implementation and training. To bridge the digital divide, they called for increased access to critical infrastructure such as data, cloud and computing, along with necessary foundations for better training and education.

Key takeaways from the meeting include:

– Recognizing open source and innovation debate centres to address heightened scrutiny of foundation model releases, involving concerns about risks, transparency and governance, and requiring clear definitions and thoughtful consideration of benefits and downsides for frontier model safety and innovation.
– Promoting global access to vital digital and AI resources, which requires strong public-private collaboration.
– Acknowledging the importance of data, cloud services, computational power and training infrastructure as crucial to bridging the digital divide.
– Advancing global AI governance, which involves developing adaptive regulations, harmonizing standards and fostering ongoing discussions for effective international mechanisms.

About the AI Governance Alliance
The AI Governance Alliance is a World Economic Forum initiative focused on responsible generative artificial intelligence (AI). It brings together influential regional voices and global stakeholders to harness the benefits of generative AI systems and technologies while ensuring equitable and sustainable global impacts.

Bangkok’s First INNSiDE Hotel Partners with Art Story on Immersive Exhibit

876 545 wttc2

Bangkok’s First INNSiDE Hotel Partners with Art Story on Immersive Exhibit - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, November 23, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX /  INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit, the newest hotel to grace Bangkok’s skyline, is cementing its position as a cultural hub through a collaboration with Art Story by autistic Thai. The local social enterprise that highlights the work of autistic artists and the new hotel, with a mission to spark curiosity, launched “The Colors & Texture of INNSiDE: Through My Eyes” this week. The limited-time exhibition is the result of a hands-on grand opening celebration “Meet Bangkok from the INNSiDE” that involved guests completing the artwork.

The art exhibition is open to hotel guests and the general public in the 32nd floor lobby until December 31st 2023.

The vibrant paintings are inspired by local Thai culture, traditions and each artists’ reflection and interpretation of questions posed to them while practicing their craft with Art Story.

“Just as our hotel has integrated with the fabric of this thriving city, the art on display will be integrated into our hotel’s atmosphere,” said the hotel’s general manager Aarron Nelson. “We want our guests to feel the harmony between being the observer and the architectural identity of the hotel.”

Of the ten pieces on display, three were completed at the grand opening event where guests were invited to lend a hand (and a brush) to create the final version. The seven pieces, completed by individual artists, are each distinct with paintings ranging from Buddha statues to elements of nature, such as flowers displayed on an altar and lion imagery in traditional Thai-style.

Under the umbrella of the Autistic Foundation, Art Story uses art as a therapeutic and inspirational tool to promote self-development of each individual artist and promote uniqueness as a strength. The foundation also strives for more inclusivity in society for exceptional individuals. INNSiDE by Melia Bangkok Sukhumvit will help raise funds for the foundation through the use of QR codes next to each piece of art. Visitors who wish to own the paintings or items inspired by the paintings can purchase directly through the codes with the money going straight to the foundation.

Reaching 34 floors, the INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit is Thailand’s first ‘INNSiDE by Meliá’ hotel and the fourth Meliá Hotels International property to debut in the kingdom. In addition to the vast 32nd floor co-working space and five playful meeting rooms, the lifestyle hotel has three diverse food and beverage outlets and an awe-inspiring infinity pool on the top floor with an expansive rooftop terrace that evokes an Ibiza mood. The Giant Swing Pool Bar features a compelling contemporary interpretation of Bangkok’s Brahman structure The Giant Swing making for a dramatic photo backdrop. The hotel offers a 24-hour Infit Gym and concierge service. Its range of sustainability efforts include a ban on single-use plastic, recycled glass bottles for drinking water and biodegradable takeaway boxes, in-room paper and plastic free collaterals and complimentary organic amenities.

S Hotels Embarks on Major Renovation for SAii Resorts in Southern Thailand - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25HOTELS.comPhuket, Thailand, November 3, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / S Hotels and Resorts PCL, the global hospitality company from Singha Estate PCL, has announced a major USD 27 million renovation of its resorts in Thailand and Fiji, including an investment of more than THB 500m (approx. USD 14.2m) to reimagine the design, facilities and guest experiences at its three SAii Resorts in Thailand – SAii Phi Phi Island Village, SAii Laguna Phuket, and SAii Koh Samui Choengmon – and FJD 28.5m (approx. USD 12.5m) to upgrade Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.

First introduced in 2019, SAii Resorts is S Hotels & Resorts’ homegrown upper-upscale resort brand which specialises in sustainable and free-spirited lifestyle hospitality. The name “SAii” derives from the Thai word for “sand,” and the trio of SAii Resorts in Thailand offer some of the kingdom’s finest beachfront stays. SAii Phi Phi Island Village and SAii Laguna Phuket have already achieved Green Globe™ Certification for their commitment to conservation, and SAii Koh Samui Choengmon promotes sustainability through a wide range of initiatives, including recycling, water conservation, energy reduction and plastic-free products.

Commencing this year and running until 2025, this new programme of extensive upgrades will encompass almost every touchpoint, including the guestrooms and suites, lobby areas, restaurants, spas, swimming pools and more. Every aspect of these upgrades will embrace SAii Resorts’ natural and responsible philosophy, and Southern Thai arts & crafts, including local pottery, will be incorporated in the design concept.

The renovation of the guest rooms will be undertaken during the low season, so it will not impact upon the resort experience. The newly renovated premium rooms at SAii Laguna Phuket and villas at SAii Phi Phi Island Village will be bookable now for stays from December 2023 onwards, enabling new and returning guests to enjoy the fresh, authentic SAii experience this coming high season.

At SAii Phi Phi Island Village, the Thai-inspired retreat nestled in 70 hectares of coconut groves on Koh Phi Phi Don, the interior décor will reflect the resort’s commitment to marine conservation with playful artworks that represent the underwater world. Intended to let every visitor “Recharge in Your Own Shell,” the refurbishment will enhance the contrast between the original rustic architecture and contemporary interiors, with natural earthy tones to calm the soul and local materials that evoke the spirit of Koh Phi Phi’s roots. The resort’s spacious Thai bungalows will be upgraded with a nautical design concept inspired by island life, with sustainable materials such as bamboo and grass used to craft the outdoor chairs and lamps, and headboard artwork created from the ropes used to tie up boats.

Also being refurbished are the arrival and departure areas, and outdoor infinity pools, with the aim of positioning Koh Phi Phi as a destination-of-choice for eco-conscious, experience-seeking travellers.

At SAii Laguna Phuket, which is nestled between the Andaman Sea and the lagoons on Phuket’s sunset coast, the design will be based on the concept of a traditional lagoon house, updated for the modern era. This will become more than just a place to stay; it will be a resort where experiences, activities and a sense of tranquility can coexist peacefully. Travellers will be transported on a multi-sensory journey through taste, texture and sight, interwoven with elements that tap into Phuket’s heritage. One key aspect of the project will be the launch of SAii Spa, the brand-new holistic lifestyle concept which artfully blends wellness, local Thai culture, anti-aging solutions and smart nutrition, to promote balanced living and celebrate the joy of exploration. A SAii Wellness Concierge will help guests to tailor their own path to happiness and wellbeing through personalized programs, creating a truly transformative experience.

SAii Resorts will redefine the culinary journey with three groundbreaking new food & beverage programs. The “SAiiSational Breakfast” will treat guests to honest, healthy and homemade dishes, with “eat like a local” favorites and nutrient-packed egg dishes from around the globe that support local farmers and communities, while also catering to special dietary requirements. The “Global Authentic Gastronomy” concept showcases original recipes from around the world, offering a blend of simplicity and exceptional taste to ensure that each dish conjures cherished memories and brings lots of smiles. Finally, “Savor Real Thai” will delight diners with the genuine taste of authentic Thai cuisine. Together, these innovative F&B programs will position SAii Resorts as the ultimate destination for foodies.

Following the completion of this extensive renovation project in 2025, S Hotels & Resorts expects to achieve a 15-20% increase in the average daily rate (ADR) at its SAii Resorts in Thailand.

The Beachfront Bures at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort are nestled amid palm trees, directly on the sandy shore Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, the five-star destination nestled on Fiji’s Coral Coast, is set to complete a comprehensive renovation of its public areas and guest rooms this November. Upon reopening, guests will be immersed in the ambience of a traditional Fijian village, with world-class facilities including a lagoon pool, tennis courts, golf training facility, wedding chapel, an award-winning spa and more. S Hotels & Resorts expects to achieve a 20% ADR increase following these upgrades.
