Marriott International Explores the Outdoors - TRAVELINDEXBethesda, Maryland, United States, December 13, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Marriott International, Inc. today announces the expansion of its outdoor-focused lodging offerings through two founding deals with key players in the outdoor lodging segment. The deals include the acquisition of the Postcard Cabins brand, formerly known as Getaway Outposts, and the execution of a long-term agreement with Trailborn.

With these outdoor-focused deals, Marriott aims to offer guests and Marriott Bonvoy members more choice in traditional and alternative accommodations in nature-forward destinations, where consumers have shown growing interest in being immersed in nature without sacrificing comfort. Underscoring Marriott’s focus on the outdoor lodging segment, the company plans to launch an outdoor-focused collection in 2025, anchored by these founding deals.

“Marriott has long been committed to offering incredible travel experiences for every trip purpose. As guests are increasingly interested in nature-immersive travel, we are excited to build on the incredible breadth of our portfolio and welcome the Postcard Cabins and Trailborn portfolios to Marriott Bonvoy as we deliver more accommodations and experiences in awe-inspiring destinations,” said Leeny Oberg, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Development, Marriott International. “Whether you’re looking for bespoke lodging near natural wonders, an elevated camping experience, or off the beaten path excursions in nature, our planned outdoor-focused collection is expected to offer a broad array of options for seasoned adventurers and first-time explorers.”

Immersive Lodging for Outdoor Adventures
The Postcard Cabins and Trailborn portfolios are set to enhance Marriott Bonvoy’s already robust portfolio of exciting destinations across the globe with the addition of alternative accommodations such as tiny homes and cabins in natural destinations and unique lodging near outdoor wonders like national parks, deserts, ski areas and shorelines.

Postcard Cabins
Marriott has acquired the Postcard Cabins brand, which was formerly known as Getaway Outposts. The Postcard Cabins portfolio provides individual travelers and small groups the opportunity to unplug and enjoy nature. Each property, which consists of groupings of tiny cabins, is located within two hours’ drive of major metropolitan areas. Set on expansive woodlands, the cabins are dog-friendly and feature modern design, private bathrooms, full kitchens, and ample space between cabins for privacy and relaxation. The current Postcard Cabins portfolio, comprised of 29 properties with over 1,200 cabins across the U.S., will operate under long-term agreements with Marriott. The Postcard Cabins portfolio is also expected to be part of Marriott’s planned outdoor-focused collection with expected integration into Marriott’s system and platforms, including Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app, in 2025.

“In joining Marriott, we’re excited to bring the Postcard Cabins experience to a global audience seeking exactly what we offer—a place to slow down, disconnect from the everyday and invest in the relationships that matter most. What started a decade ago with a small group of believers in the power of spending free time in nature, has grown into a national movement, which we expect will only gather steam with Marriott’s expansive reach,” said Jon Staff, Founder and CEO of Postcard Cabins.

Trailborn
Marriott has also entered into a long-term agreement to add Trailborn’s portfolio to Marriott’s system. As an innovative outdoor hospitality brand, Trailborn is focused on bringing bespoke hotels built for adventure to the great American outdoors. Trailborn’s current and pipeline portfolio consists of 559 rooms across five iconic outdoor destinations, with several projects in development. They have locations near Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon and in Highlands, NC, with properties to come in Wrightsville Beach, NC, and Mendocino, CA. Trailborn offers design-forward accommodations inspired by each property’s unique locale, experience-driven programming, curated food and beverage offerings, and insightful property teams to help guests chart their exploration. Trailborn’s current portfolio will be part of Marriott’s planned outdoor-focused collection, with expected integration into Marriott’s system and platforms, including Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app, in 2025.
“We are thrilled to announce Trailborn’s agreement with Marriott, enhancing and underscoring our mission to provide travelers with exceptional access to the country’s most extraordinary outdoor destinations, deliver experiences guests love, and maintain the unique character of Trailborn’s independent spirit,” said Mike Weiss and Ben Weinberg, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of Trailborn. “Trailborn is excited to work alongside Marriott to provide guests with the perfect blend of comfort and adventure in stunning outdoor settings.”

Exciting Development Opportunities for Franchisees and Owners

With a focus on upscale and upper-upscale accommodations in nature-forward destinations, Marriott’s anticipated outdoor-focused collection is expected to be conversion friendly, providing exciting opportunities for franchisees, owners and developers looking to affiliate their outdoor-focused properties with Marriott’s powerful portfolio and Marriott Bonvoy, with over 219 million members.

The terms of the transactions are not being disclosed.

Meliá Chiang Mai with Handicrafts from Northern Thailand Hill Tribes

900 601 wttc2

Meliá Chiang Mai with Handicrafts from Northern Thailand Hill Tribes - TRAVELINDEXChiang Mai, Thailand, December 12, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Meliá Chiang Mai is showcasing a broad spectrum of charming decorations, made from natural and recycled materials, this festive season to support the livelihoods and cultural traditions of Northern Thailand’s vibrant hill tribes.

For generations hill tribes including the Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lawa, Lisu, and Mien practiced slash-and-burn agriculture as part of a semi-nomadic lifestyle. However, ecological concerns and government restrictions on land clearing and tree felling have rendered their way of life unsustainable. With limited agricultural opportunities, these communities have turned to handicrafts as a means of supporting their families – and preserving cultural traditions.

From handwoven textiles to intricately carved ornaments, a diverse selection of handicrafts crafted from eco-friendly materials are available to purchase at the hotel, making for thoughtful gifts and directly supporting the artisans who have crafted them.

“This collaboration is more than just a celebration of Christmas—it is dedication to our community, sustainability, and cultural preservation as we celebrate the spirit of giving this festive season,” said the hotel’s general manager Marc Selinger.  “Each ornament tells a story of craftsmanship and perseverance, providing guests with an opportunity to connect with the vibrant traditions of Northern Thailand and contribute to a greater cause.”

The hotel has partnered with local fair-trade organisations to help ensure artisans receive equitable compensation for their work, supporting their families financially and fostering a sense of pride and purpose within the community.

Holiday décor throughout the hotel this Christmas is made by the hill tribes.

On a permanent basis, Meliá Chiang Mai is home to a social enterprise that promotes talented Thai designers, artists and craftsmen to ultimately help communities in need and preserve Thai culture.

Underpinned by the concept of “Giving Art, Art of Giving”, The GALLERY, situated in the hotel’s lobby, sells an exquisite array of accessories such as handbags, wallets, silks, children’s toys, and home décor items including ceramic bowls and cups made by Thai designers and artists.

All profits from the sale of the handmade items contribute to further artistic endeavors in disadvantaged communities and help preserve and promote local culture, particularly the skills indigenous to over 40 communities across Thailand. The communities surround properties owned by Thailand’s leading integrated lifestyle real estate group Asset World Corp Public Company Limited (AWC), which established The GALLERY.

Meliá Hanoi Launches Cham Exquisite Cantonese Cuisine

900 600 wttc2

Meliá Hanoi Launches Cham Exquisite Cantonese Cuisine - TRAVELINDEXHanoi, Vietnam, December 4, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / A new dining destination in Vietnam’s capital, Cham Cantonese Kitchen, celebrates its official launch on December 6th, with a chef takeover that will see two top female chefs teaming up in the Cham kitchen for the evening.

For the launch event, created in partnership between Meliá Hanoi and Vietcetera, Summer Le, the head chef of Vietnam’s first MICHELIN Green Star award winner, Nén Danang, will showcase her skills alongside Cham’s Le Thi Thai, the seasoned head dim sum chef who has nearly three decades of experience in the industry.

Over the last 18 months Meliá Hanoi’s gastronomy offerings have undergone a complete reimagining. Cham now offers a dining experience that harkens back to 1960s Hong Kong with masterly chefs crafting authentic Cantonese cuisine with a modern touch.

Last year Meliá Hanoi’s Garbo Bar opened, drawing inspiration from the golden era of ‘50’s Hollywood with its new sleek gold and emerald green bar counter, along with Mosaico, the hotel’s all-day restaurant which reflects the hotel’s European heritage with its Mediterranean fare. The revitalized restaurants are helping position the property as a sought-after dining destination.

From the elegant interior design to the new menu vision, Cham Cantonese Kitchen is an entirely new upscale eatery that incorporates the best of the region offering a dining experience that is both authentic and innovative.

“In Vietnamese and Cantonese cooking, the dipping sauce nuoc cham is at the heart of the meal. It’s the taste that brings everything together,” explained Dominik Tschurr, Director of Food & Beverage at Meliá Hanoi. “Our new name Cham captures the multifaceted power of this ingredient and the importance of unity and connecting together with friends, family and colleagues.”

Under the direction of Le Thi Thai, Cham Cantonese Kitchen will highlight what she does best: dim sum. Thai started her career in 1996 when the first international hotel in Hanoi opened. For close to two decades, she developed her skills in a Cantonese kitchen before switching to the contemporary John Anthony restaurant where she spent nine years. Over the course of her career, she has worked alongside Chinese Master chefs including Chan Wing Kwong – former head chef at Michelin-starred Crystal Jade Golden Palace in Singapore.

“I have had the chance to work with many Chinese and Singaporean dim sum masters over the course of my career,” said Le Thi Thai. “Through these rich experiences and tutelage I believe I’ve been able to perfect my craft.”

Highlights from the dim sum menu include crab claw steam buns, spicy xiao long bao (soup dumplings), and pork and abalone siu mai. The menu draws inspiration from the diverse culinary landscape throughout China with dishes such as hot & sour Sichuan seafood soup, lobster cooked Beijing-style, and braised abalone with mushroom, to name a few. Each dish is expertly crafted by talented chefs who have years of experience in crafting Cantonese delicacies.

In the future innovative tableside offerings will be introduced including smoked duck served tableside and beggar’s chicken, a show-stopping dish that involves a succulent chicken that is baked whole after being coated in clay. Post-oven the unassuming-looking clay-coated dish is cracked open with a hammer to reveal a juicy chicken inside.

Chinese liquor and creative cocktails inspired by Chinese flavors, are also on offer alongside an international selection of wine.

Located on Meliá Hanoi’s first floor, the renovated restaurant has a green, leafy outlook from floor-to-ceiling windows. The completely remodeled interior features a warm color palette of dark teal and burnt orange. The decor creates a vintage China atmosphere with a residential vibe inviting guests to feel like they’re dining within an upscale home in China.

Cham Cantonese Kitchen has a seating capacity of 92 and is open daily for lunch and dinner. Book your next experience at Cham.

The Hari Hong Kong Hailed as World Leader in Sustainability

925 510 wttc2

The Hari Hong Kong Hailed as World Leader in Sustainability - TRAVELINDEXHong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, December 4, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The globe’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for sustainable travel and tourism has awarded The Hari Hong Kong ‘EarthCheck Benchmarked Bronze status’ for its raft of sustainability measures.

EarthCheck’s certification programs involve stringent benchmarking to bolster sustainability and help consumers make informed decisions. The certification draws on more than 30 years of EarthCheck working with research centres and universities globally to address sustainability and climate change issues facing tourism destinations, communities and businesses.

To achieve Benchmarked Bronze status, The Hari Hong Kong has excelled across key performance areas including energy efficiency, water use, carbon emissions, chemicals, community and employee impact, paper use, waste and more.

EarthCheck deemed the hotel a “Regional Leader”, meaning an “exemplary standard of performance for the type and location of an operation”, in areas such as waste sent to landfill, energy consumption and potable water consumption. The Hari Hong Kong’s waste sent to landfill, for example, was 3.3L per guest night, a third of the regional average of 9.4L per guest per night. The hotel’s energy consumption per guest per night was 90.5 MJ, half the regional average of 180.3 MJ per guest per night. Its potable water consumption was 223.3L per guest per night, less than two thirds of the regional average of 360.9L per guest per night.

“We know that your team has worked incredibly hard to reach this milestone, which demonstrates your commitment to preserving and enhancing your natural surroundings, cultural heritage, local community and economy,” EarthCheck said. “Thank you for being a world leader in sustainability.”

From the outset, The Hari Hong Kong, which opened in December 2020 in the heart of vibrant Wan Chai, was established through sustainable design and construction which sought to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The hotel then achieved EarthCheck evaluation in 2022, began working on the certification programme at the beginning of this year and will target EarthCheck Silver status for next year.

“To continually improve in environmental and social sustainability, our commitment extends to energy efficiency, water conservation, reduction of waste and single-use plastic, solid waste management, community involvement, training and education, support of local employment, and minimizing our carbon footprint; present in The Hari sustainability action plan, each measured against the annual Benchmarking Assessment of EarthCheck,” said The Hari Hong Kong’s General Manager Edward E. Snoeks.

“We are also dedicated to growing in an organic and sustainable manner through continuous monitoring of our consumption, purchasing responsibly and fostering positive relationships with our local suppliers, stakeholders, and the wider community alike.”

The Hari Hong Kong is also a LEED (Silver), BEAM Plus (Silver) and BEEO certified hotel in recognition for its sustainable design, construction and energy efficiency performance.

A green wall on the facade of the hotel’s second floor terrace stretches three stories high, bringing down the temperature of surrounding areas between two to four degrees Celsius.

In addition to its sustainability measures, the hotel also supports local charities, such as, for example, the Hong Chi Association to help provide education, training and empowerment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The Hari will direct all proceeds from its upcoming Christmas Market in the lobby on Dec. 9 from 5pm to Hong Chi.

Spearheading the likes of The Hari Art Prize in support of emerging artists, The Hari Chronicles to foster ongoing conversations about art, design and culture, and the new “The Hari Neighbourhood Guide Audio Tour” which ventures off the beaten track, The Hari Hong Kong also has a deep connection with art, culture, and its community.

About The Hari Hong Kong
Opened in December 2020, The Hari Hong Kong is the vision of Dr. Aron Harilela, Chairman and CEO of Harilela Hotels Ltd, and the second hotel to open under the ‘The Hari’ brand. The first hotel, The Hari London opened in August 2016. The Harilela Group was established in 1959 and is still wholly owned by the Harilela family. The Harilela Group is the parent company of Harilela Hotels which owns 15 properties across Hong Kong, China, Asia, Europe, and the US.
