ENJOY THE PURA VIDA LIFESTYLE IN COSTA RICA

600 275 wttc2

The national phrase of Costa Rica is pura vida. It means “pure life.” It’s a greeting, a slogan, and the national philosophy. Costa Rica is the happiest nation in the world and pura vida guides every action of its citizens. These are people who love their land, their animals, and each other, and they’re thrilled to share the beauty and comfort of their nation with visitors.

Costa Rica’s cultural appeal doesn’t end with the national vibe. It rewards travellers who are looking for great food, new friends, and some leisure and relaxation. Goway’s Destination Specialists can customize a cultural trip through Costa Rica. Every trip to Costa Rica is 100% tailor-made, so travellers can know they’re enjoying a trip made just for them. Learn more on Goway’s website.

Fast Friends & Fresh Food

It’s a bit of a cliche to say that people in Costa Rica are nice, but they are. There’s a friendliness, and furthermore, a respect that permeates this culture and makes it paramount to treat guests to the nation with utmost courtesy. You’ll make fast friends here, whether it’s a villager you meet while trekking through the mainland or a fellow beachgoer a few metres down the sand. You’ll also have a lot to do alongside other people, not least of which is dance, since Costa Ricans love to dance. The food is also great and incredibly fresh. The nation has a bounty of fresh seafood from the coasts and locally farmed produce and meat from the mainland. Whether you’re eating deconstructed tamales in a trendy restaurant in San Jose or feasting on humble gallo pinto in a soda (family restaurant) in a small town near one of the parks, expect satisfying food made with fresh ingredients.

Beach Life

If you don’t cap off a vacation to Costa Rica with a few days at the beach, you’re not doing it right. There’s certainly no shortage of beaches. With two coasts and dozens of national parks, Costa Rica offers you a lot of options for relaxation. If you’re sticking close to San Jose, head to Jaco Beach to enjoy the Miami-lite vibe and well-developed infrastructure just off the wide beach. Spend a few days at a laidback spot on the Pacific like Playa Carrillo or Samara Beach, both near the Nicoya Peninsula, and enjoy the calm waters. Join the trendsetters at Dominical Beach or really get out there and stay at Montezuma Beach, where you’ll likely have the place to yourself. No matter where you go, you’ll find warm sands, blue waters, and plenty of life to discover beneath the waves.

History in San Jose

San Jose will mostly serve as your gateway to the national parks and beaches of the nation, but don’t sleep on its appeal, especially if you have a taste for history. Costa Rica might not boast Aztec or Maya temples like some of its neighbours, but there’s a fascinating history worth discovering in the capital. The main museums like the National Museum of Costa Rica, the Museum of Costa Rican Art, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, and the Jade Museum trace the nation’s history through historical artifacts and prized works of arts, such as jade sculptures from over 2,000 years ago. The Teatro Nacional is arguably the most celebrated building in the country. Built at the turn of the 20th century, this theatre marvels on the outside with its neoclassical design, but it’s the inside that’s the showstopper: not only the marble lobby, but the golden symphony hall where you’ll find world-class performances of orchestral classics.

Meliá Hotels Unveils Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote in Spain

899 622 wttc2

Meliá Hotels Unveils Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote in Spain - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25HOTELS.comLanzarote, Spain, August 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The new Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote features 282 rooms and villas, an 1,800 m2 swimming pool, beautiful tropical gardens designed by César Manrique and seven dining options.

Designed by Fernando Higueras and César Manrique, the building combines rationalist architecture by Higueras with murals, pool and garden design by the Canarian artist and painter.

Over 40 years ago, Higueras took over the principal building with the idea that the concrete, formwork, and geometry of the folds and their monumental emphasis blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature and environment. In turn, Manrique took charge of the hotel’s swimming pool, the spectacular tropical gardens, home to more than 300 species; and of the frescos and sculptures that bring colour and warmth to the building and its interiors.

In 1979, the hotel was awarded the International Prize for Architecture. Today, following a complete renovation and redecoration of the spaces, Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote is a luxury 5* adults-only hotel, with direct beach access, spa, gym, meeting rooms, outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, rooms with private pools, villas, and extensive dining options.

The hotel is one of the assets that form part of the alternative investment vehicle Victoria Hotels & Resorts, a collaboration between Meliá Hotels International, Bankinter Investment and GMA.

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote is nestled in a dreamy enclave, surrounded by the beautiful beaches of Costa Teguise and charming villages. The island of Lanzarote, a Biosphere Reserve, features unique lunar landscapes, volcanoes, unspoiled beaches, picturesque villages and an exceptional climate.

The hotel, the second in Europe from the luxury resort brand Paradisus by Meliá, aims to reinvent the traditional “all inclusive” concept, innovating and transforming it through new experiences linked to the destination’s nature and exploring everything it has to offer.

Under the slogan, “Embrace Your Nature”, Meliá Hotels International offers an authentic cultural immersion into each of the places where its hotels are located.

DESTINATION INCLUSIVE® EXPERIENCES: A NEW WAY TO TRAVEL

Paradisus by Meliá goes beyond traditional sun and beach tourism to bring new adventures. Like at all the hotels that form part of this brand, all Destination Inclusive® experiences are included in the guest’s stay at Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote.

Combining luxury with local culture and nature is key to providing guests with a truly unique experience. An innovative hotel concept where the guest’s entire stay is immersed in the local culture and traditions, from cooking workshops to excursions to the most hidden or iconic places of the Fortunate Isles or Islas Afortunadas.

Under the slogan, “Embrace New Adventures”, Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote has created unique Destination Inclusive® experiences that range from guided tours to popular tourist sites, like the Jameos del Agua or the Cactus Garden, to artistic excursions brimming with creativity, like the emblematic El Grifo winery with its vines intertwined in the volcanic ash that is so characteristic of the island.

At Paradisus by Meliá, the destination lies at the heart of a genuine adventure, where one can “discover the boundless pleasures of a holiday with a capital ‘H.’ Guests can escape to the most secluded corners, savour authentic cuisine, meet local artists, and discover the culture of the villages and their people,” explains Susanna Mander, Global Director of Brand Marketing at Paradisus by Meliá.

AN ABUNDANCE OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL DINING OPPORTUNITIES

Haute cuisine is another of the attractive features of this hotel where international, Mediterranean and, of course, the signature Canarian cuisine is combined to reinterpret classics like papas arrugás con mojo, torrija de costillar from local cows, ropa vieja and a long list of recommendations, which naturally always include the exquisite cheese and wine varieties from the region.

Restaurants include: Malva Food Bazaar, Capella Italian Restaurant, La Graciosa (local cuisine), Samira (Middle East cuisine), Ginger Bar & Cocktail (open 24 hours), The Shack Pool Bar and The Reserve Pool Bar.

To understand some of the elements cooked on the traditional stoves of La Graciosa restaurant, we need to travel to the renowned restaurant La Acuarela in Mogan, which has been under Germán Ortega’s leadership for many years. Awarded a Michelin star and two ‘soles’ from the Repsol Guide, its cuisine is one of the most renowned and revered on the island. Ortega trained at the Vassa Eggen restaurant in Stockholm, at The Letonnie in England, awarded two Michelin stars, and at Hacienda Benazuza. With these influences and with a diverse career trajectory behind him, Ortega has designed La Graciosa’s menu, including a tasting menu of three dishes that will be changed seasonally.

Ambassador Signature Sets Sail on Untouched Lan Ha Bay

900 544 wttc2

Ambassador Signature Sets Sail on Untouched Lan Ha BayHanoi, Vietnam, August 9, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Leading boutique cruise operator, Ambassador Cruise, is charting new channels of refinement on unsung Lan Ha Bay with the launch of its Ambassador Signature overnight sailing.

The limestone karst-studded seascapes in the northern reaches of the Gulf of Tonkin have long been known for providing uplift through their beauty. And now visitors can embrace fresh visual splendour on the relatively uncharted waters of Lan Ha Bay, just south of Halong Bay, onboard Ambassador Signature, a new 39-berth vessel that made its maiden voyage in July.

The new one-night voyage features myriad alluring calling cards. There’s the destination for a kick-off. Lan Ha Bay’s 300-or-so karst islands and limestone outcrops are every bit as beautiful as Halong Bay. Although it retains all the majesty of its superstar neighbour, Lan Ha Bay sees a fraction of the traffic. The two seascapes are virtually interchangeable, but the lack of tourist boats gives Lan Ha Bay a more isolated appeal.

The vessel is distinguished by an interior design that fuses high luxury with contemporary elements. And this marriage is to the fore in designer cabins in four different categories. These are Ambassador Balcony, Executive Ambassador Balcony, Ambassador Balcony Suite, and the Captain’s View Ambassador Suite. All cabins come with a private balcony and spacious bathroom. And the latter two categories, the highest on the vessel, have private terraces where guests can kick back and savour the incredible scenery in total seclusion. Cabins range from 28-35 sqm.

Elsewhere there’s a spa, a plush piano lounge, and an expansive sundeck; the largest of any cruise vessel on Lan Ha Bay. A strong focus on gastronomy is showcased via sumptuous evening menus curated by Michelin-starred chef David Gallienne. Divine dining is complemented by the melodies of a resident band who enhance the evening ambience.

Enticing optional excursions, meanwhile, include a visit to Viet Hai, a traditional floating fishing village, and a tour through Light and Dark Cave by bamboo boat or kayak. The cave features impressive stalactites and leads to a peaceful lake surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

“The launch of Ambassador Signature has been momentous for several reasons,” said Nguyen Cao Son, founder of Asia Premier Cruises Corporation, which owns Ambassador Cruise.

“Lan Ha Bay is undiscovered in comparison with Halong Bay, which imbues sailing with a sense of discovery for passengers. In addition to that, we’ve placed an emphasis on life’s refinements via a world-class spa, truly spectacular cabins, and — of course — cuisine masterminded by a Michelin-starred chef.”

Galienne’s multi-course extravaganzas are one among many tantalising aspects of voyages on the new Ambassador Signature vessel.

Featuring a splendid blend of Asian-Vietnamese design with French colonial accents, the ship launched on 21 July.

There are numerous attention-grabbing elements of the experience on Ambassador Signature.

The surrounding natural beauty, best appreciated via the 360-degree views of the bay from the sundeck, is never anything less than stunning.

An onboard spa encompasses a broad range of massage and other treatments. The piano lounge is the place to wind down after dinner, with live musical entertainment, fine wines and creative cocktails putting added swing into the sailing.

Ambassador Signature’s emphasis on fine cuisine, meanwhile, is sure to capture the imagination of gourmands.

Ambassador Cruise was recently named a World TOP Heritage Gourmet Award winner by the International Business Federation in recognition of the cuisine on its Ambassador II vessel. And the culinary offerings on Ambassador Signature are destined to garner wider attention.

Normandy-born chef Gallienne, who trained at the Michelin-starred Manoir du Lys, earned his star at his Giverny restaurant Le Jardin des Plumes. He earned further recognition by winning season 11 of the TV show Top Chef. For dinners on Ambassador Signature, Gallienne has supervised menus that utilise premium ingredients and fuse Asian and French flavours and cooking techniques.

Since launching its first vessel in 2021, Ambassador Cruise has made a name for itself as the leading luxury cruise operator on Halong Bay. With the launch of Ambassador Signature it now operates three vessels, the others being Ambassador I and Ambassador II. Guests can choose from a variety of journeys including overnight cruises, day cruises, and dinner cruises.

‘NOT THERE ANYMORE’: Historic Lahaina reduced to rubble and ash

600 275 wttc2

The wildfire that has brought sheer devastation to Maui is especially heartbreaking for Hawaii because it struck one of its most historic towns and the onetime capital of the former kingdom.

Lahaina holds deep cultural significance for Hawaiians. The town was once the royal residence of King Kamehameha, who unified Hawaii under a single kingdom by defeating the other islands’ chiefs. His successors made it the capital from 1820 to 1845, according to the National Park Service.

Kings and queens are buried in the graveyard of the 200-year-old stone Wainee Church. Later named Waiola, the church that once sat up to 200 people was photographed engulfed in flames.

Across the town, landmarks were charred beyond recognition and entire neighbourhoods that had been a vibrant vision of colour and island life have been reduced to gray ash.

Block after block is nothing but rubble and blackened foundations, including along famous Front Street, where tourists shopped and dined just days ago.

“Lahaina, with a few rare exceptions, has been burned down,” said Hawaii Gov. Josh Green. “Without a doubt, it feels like a bomb was dropped on Lahaina… We are heartsick.”

More than 1,000 structures were destroyed and boats in the harbour were scorched.

Many businesses, including one of the town’s oldest shops, were destroyed. As owner Tiffany Kidder Winn assessed the damage at the Whaler’s Locker gift store, she said, “I couldn’t even tell where I was, because all the landmarks were gone.”

The fire consumed much of Lahaina’s historic Front Street, home to restaurants, bars, stores and what is believed to be the United States’ largest banyan, a fig tree with aerial roots that grow out of branches and eventually reach the soil and become new trunks. Reports say that while the famed Banyan tree is still standing, it is scarred and unknown whether it will survive.

“All the places that are tourist areas, that are Hawaiian history, are gone, and that can’t be replaced,” said Richard Olsten, a helicopter pilot with Air Maui who surveyed the scene. “You can’t refurbish a building that’s just ashes now. It can’t be rebuilt – it’s gone forever.”

Francine Hollinger, a 66-year-old Native Hawaiian, said witnessing the destruction of Front Street was “like losing a family member … because they’ll never be able to rebuild it, like we wouldn’t be able to bring back our mother or father.”

The Lahaina Historic District is home to more than 60 historic sites, according to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

For Native Hawaiians, the town is a connection to their ancestors. Lahainaluna High School was where royalty and chiefs were educated, and also where Kamehameha and his Council of Chiefs drafted the first Declaration of Rights of the People and the Constitution for the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Lahaina also has a rich history of whaling, with more than 400 ships a year visiting for weeks at a time in the 1850s. Crew members sometimes clashed with missionaries on the island.

Sugar plantations and fishing boosted the economy over the decades, but tourism is the main driver now. Nearly three million visitors came to Maui last year, and many of them come to the historic town.

The fire is “just going to change everything,” said Lee Imada, who worked at the Maui News for 39 years before retiring. “It’s just hard to register, even right now, what the full impact of this is going to be.”

He recalled walking down Front Street among the tourists as they shopped or ate, looking at the banyan tree, and enjoying the beautiful ocean views from the harbour.

“It’s just sort of hard to believe that it’s not there,” Imada said. “Everything that I remember the place to be is not there anymore.”

This first private customer flight had been delayed for years; its success means Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic can now start offering monthly rides, joining Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the space tourism business.

BRUCE ALMIGHTY: Goway’s founder at 80, celebrates a not-boring life

600 275 wttc2

Bruce Hodge is surely one of the most interesting men in the world, so it was only fitting that lightning flashed and thunder clapped during his remarks as the inimitable founder of Goway Travel celebrated his 80th birthday at his North Toronto home late last week.

Dramatic effects aside, most in attendance – several dozen family, friends, neighbours, and select industry colleagues (in some cases one and the same) – knew much of the Hodge/Goway origin story, in which a determined young Aussie (a former research economist with a bank in Australia and a tour guide/travel sales manager in Europe) emigrated to Canada in 1970 where he founded Goway Travel.

The company quickly found its niche as a leading South Pacific tour specialist, eventually evolving into an international powerhouse that in 2023 sends travellers to destinations around the world and boasts offices in four countries (Canada, US, Australia, Philippines).

Though guests might not have known that the humble Hodge and wife Claire (also integral in the growth of the company) were “too poor to have children” in their early days – a problem clearly remedied, as daughter Bronwyn and son Adam looked on – most had heard some or all of Hodge’s travel exploits, such as climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, visiting the gorillas in Rwanda, fleeing tiger sharks while diving the Great Barrier Reef, trekking in Peru and Nepal, riding the Trans-Siberian railway, a 32-day crossing of Africa from “Cairo to Cape Town,” and too many more to mention.

The humble Hodge – and other speakers – recounted a life and business fueled by good humour, remarkable tales, and a healthy helping of vino and suds – one of Hodge’s passions being a hearty pub wherever he roams.

But make no mistake, declared Ian, his friend of 44 years and BGM – “bloody good mate” – Hodge is a man of remarkable qualities: “Determined, focussed, purposeful, enduring, constant, consistent… And those qualities are laced with integrity and honesty.”

Then he laughed and bestowed upon his friend an “Australian OBE” award – “over bloody eighty!”

Claire, Adam, Bronwyn, and Bruce Hodge

And 80 years has proved to be plenty of time for Hodge to fulfil what he said were his two great quests in life: “to explore our wonderful world, and to create and build a business from scratch.”

The latter, he says, started with a mere “350 bucks” in his pocket, rendering his second quest “an impossible dream.”

Looking back, he laughed, “it was stupid” and required “breaking all the rules of business” to succeed. Indeed, he revealed, “Things were not good… and for the first eight years of running a business with no money, I wandered in the wilderness.

“And if you know anything about the Bible,” he joked, “Moses only wandered in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights.”

Even as the business grew, he admitted, “I had to face many, many, many, unbeatable foes. There were seven recessions, which includes Sept. 11, the travel-industry killing pandemic (and) we even had a computer hack…” – all obstacles that wouldn’t have been overcome without the “unwavering support of my wife Claire, the dedicated staff of Goway who bought into my quest, and some wonderful friends. So, those of you who helped me along the way, I want to formally thank you.”

As for his “other” quest – experiencing the wonderful world (with his family and friends), Hodge said, “I’ve been lucky to get really out there and see a lot of places.”

And it’s a quest that continues. Only last year, Hodge said he visited “the unbelievably treacherous, rotten place called the Skeleton Coast (in Namibia),” adding with grin, “It was awesome!”

But his biggest blessing, he reckoned, was the great luck to fall in love three times in his life: “First with my wife Claire, then with my daughter, and then with my granddaughter.” And there’s another grandchild on the way, he revealed.

Ultimately, he mused, “I am a very fortunate person… Life, you can gather in my case, has not been boring.

“And it’s going to continue that way,” he assured, explaining that he and Adam have been invited to take part next year in an 1,800-km. safari across Western Australia – a quest he says there was no chance of turning down.

“The point,” he said, “is I’m going! Just because you turn 80 doesn’t mean you can’t do those kinds of things.

“I tell you, I try to live my life by the philosophy of Clint Eastwood. And his philosophy is: ‘Don’t let the old man in!’”
