AIR FRANCE ARRIVES IN OTTAWA

600 275 wttc2

Air France has inaugurated its new non-stop flight between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Ottawa, making the carrier the only company to operate direct flights between the Canadian capital and Europe.

With the arrival of arrival of flight AF 328 on Tuesday, Ottawa became Air France’s fifth Canadian destination after Montreal (since 1950), Toronto (1976), Vancouver (2015) and Quebec City (2022).

The new service will help support Ottawa’s economic and diplomatic activity, as well as tourism in the region, including that of Gatineau in Quebec, and conversely, connect Ottawa residents to Paris and France’s global network spanning almost 200 destinations across all continents.

Air France will operate five flights a week between Ottawa (YOW) and Paris (CDG), Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Flight times:

• AF327 Ottawa to Paris-Charles de Gaulle. Departure 17h05 Arrival 06h15 next day

• AF328 Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Ottawa. Departure 13h10 Arrival 15h05 same day

The flights will be on 224-seat Airbus A330-200s outfitted with recently refurbished passenger cabins and flight-long wi-fi. Business class passengers and Flying Blue Elite members will enjoy access to the Ottawa International Airport’s Aspire Lounge.

Rounding out the new non-stop service will be Air France’s shuttle bus service between Montreal’s Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau Airport and Ottawa.

Noting that Canada is now the second leading long-haul market for Air France, airline GM for North America Eric Caron commented, “I am delighted to be inaugurating our fifth non-stop route from Canada, and the second from the province of Ontario. This will serve to further strengthen the historical ties between France and Canada, and also help foster new bonds culturally, economically and on the tourism front.”

“This route will connect the world to our globally desirable destination,” added Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “The new route links not only French nationals through the hub of Paris, but also a vast scope of travellers from across Europe, Asia, and Africa, who will fall in love with the Ottawa’s beauty, safety, and cleanliness. This is a great day for Ottawa, as Air France will play a significant role in the rebuilding and growth of our region’s international travel markets.”

Destination Canada President and CEO Marsha Walden said the positive impact of the new route will be felt “in Ottawa and across our nation.”

Active in Canada since 1950, this summer, Air France will offer 38% more seats than in summer 2019, including:

• Up to 28 flights between Montreal and Paris-Charles de Gaulle,
• Up to 14 weekly flights between Toronto and Paris-Charles de Gaulle,
• Up to 7 weekly flights between Vancouver and Paris-Charles de Gaulle,
• 3 weekly flights between Quebec City and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.
• 5 weekly flights between Ottawa and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

Additionally, airline partner KLM flies out of five Canadian cities to Amsterdam-Schiphol: Toronto (up to 13 weekly flights), Calgary (7 weekly flights), Vancouver (7 weekly flights), Montreal (6 weekly flights) and Edmonton (4 weekly flights).

FORT WORTH – TEXAS TILL THE COWS COME HOME

600 275 wttc2

A place where “cowboy boots and hats come together,” Fort Worth exudes a real Texas vibe, yet with a “modern west” ambiance befitting America’s 12th largest city.

As such, Fort Worth tourism exec Terran Fleenor says there’s lots going on in the city, not least when combined with nearby Dallas and Arlington, which comprise the state’s predominant metropolitan hub.

In Toronto to talk up the town, which counts Canada as its top international market after neighbouring Mexico, Fleenor says Fort Worth is a destination full of history and characters, particularly in the Stockyards National Historic District (banner photo), where real cowboys conduct a twice daily cattle drive and visitors can see rodeos year-round (Fridays and Saturdays), shop for western wear, and savour traditional Texas fare and country music.

The National Cowgirl Hall of Fame adds to the ambiance, as does Billy Bob’s Texas entertainment, food, and concert complex, which calls itself “the world’s largest honky tonk.”

Arguably the city’s top attraction for visitors, The Stockyard has completed the first phase of a $500-million redevelopment (with part two coming soon), including the recent opening of the 200-room Hotel Drover, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

But Forth Worth also has the 35-block Sundance Square entertainment and retail district (named after “the Sundance Kid”), with hotels (some new and renovated ones in the pipeline), restaurants, bars, music, festivals, galleries, and shopping, plus an arts district with five world-class museums (including the renowned Kimball Art Museum), Dickies Arena (for concerts and other major events), and theatre amongst its many amenities.

For outdoors enthusiasts, there’s Trinity River Trails, for hiking, cycling, horseback riding and water activities, located right in the city – which is highly walkable, giving a small town feel to a big-time city. The Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, and Zoo, also provide popular outdoor activities.

Panther City BBQ

On the culinary front, Fleenor admits “barbecue and steaks are really our bread and butter” and gives a shout out to top-rated Goldee’s, as well as Panther City BBQ; but she adds visitors can “eat their way around the world” with notable North Mexican cuisine and even vegan offerings – the latter “kinda fun given we’re known for our barbecue!”

The city has also become a hub for spirits, including tequila and whiskey, and there’s an ale trail with close to 20 craft breweries on it.

Dallas

Meanwhile, located less than hour from Forth Worth by train or car, Dallas offers a “different vibe” than Fort Worth and is often paired with its neighbour by Canadian visitors. A prime example of a Texas destination that belies the image of cattle and cowboys, the city is home to the largest arts district in the US, plus notable JFK (assassination) tours. And for those still muddling who shot JR, the “Dallas” TV show’s Southfork ranch can be visited 45 minutes away.

Arlington

Located between Dallas and Fort Worth (each about 30 minutes away), Arlington is known as the “Home of the Cowboys,” as in football team. And home of the Texas Rangers baseball franchise too. The former offers popular tours of state-of-the art AT&T Stadium (photo), while Globe Life Field is a great place to catch a ball game. The original Six Flags amusement park also calls Arlington home.

Grapevine

Another town in the Dallas-Forth Worth neighbourhood – with its own unique personality – is Grapevine, which, not surprisingly, is “all about wine” and boasts an urban wine trail. Other attributes include a historic main street, claims of being the “Christmas Capital of Texas,” a great live music scene, artisan shopping, restaurants and cafés, and a vintage excursion train to the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Canadians have plenty of direct flight service, including Air Canada, to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Coinciding with the one-year anniversary since its acquisition by Navigatr Group, Ensemble held its first Summit event for owners and managers at the Stein Erikson Lodge in Park City, Utah, earlier this month.

Under the theme ‘Champion Mindset,’ owners and managers gather at the lodge from June 4 to 78 to focus on the next stage of the consortium’s evolution,

David Harris, Executive Chairman of Ensemble, opened the conference and reflected on the theme of the Summit – championing success.

“We’ve come out from one of the most devastating crises for our industry and have taken a 180-degree turn and gone into overdrive,” he said. “Travel has surged and our members’ businesses are busier than ever as consumers are excited to be spending on travel that inspires, invigorates, and fulfills their desires to meaningfully expand their lives. We are not seeing signs that the pace will diminish any time soon as long as we continue to fuel consumer interest and drive value through our very strong relationships and an expanding, impressive lineup of diverse product offerings.”

In his remarks, Michael Johnson, President of Ensemble, provided a recap of the transformation Ensemble has undergone in the past year and what’s next as part of its evolution.

“This past year has been about rebuilding and reimagining what Ensemble could be and how it could transform our business, our members’ businesses and the consortium model,” he said. “Having successfully created that foundation, we are now focused on growth…”

The rebuilding of the brand included expanding the team, a comprehensive brand refresh that included a new logo; new print and digital publications including new consumer magazines, new FAM and marketing programs; new hotel and DMC programs; enhanced training and development; and a partnership to enhance data collection and monetization.

Group photo at the Bobsledding venue

The three-day Summit agenda also included opportunities for networking with partners as well as for fun activities – some of which were Olympic themed in keeping with the location – such as bobsledding, cycling, exploring Park City and a dine-around to the some of the area’s top restaurants.

Summit is one of the newly branded annual events Ensemble announced in January and follows on the heels of the success of Uncharted, an advisor-focused virtual event that took place in April. Next up is Horizons, the annual event for the entire consortium that will take place at Paris Las Vegas from Nov. 2-6.

Travel Leaders Network

Travel Leaders Network (TLN) continues to increase its global product offerings with the addition of 19 new travel suppliers to its network in the past year over the past year.

A recruitment process is under way to replace her; until then her functions will be maintained by Dana Glover and Karine Gagnon and the national support team.

G20 Welcomes Roadmap to Make Tourism Key Driver of SDGs - TRAVELINDEX - UNWTOGoa, India, June 24, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / UNWTO has developed with the G20 economies a roadmap for making tourism a central pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As the knowledge partner of India’s G20 Presidency, UNWTO delivered the Goa Roadmap for Tourism as a Vehicle for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at the meeting of the Ministers of Tourism of the world’s leading economies.

A roadmap for people and planet

Halfway between the 2015 launch of the 2030 Agenda and the deadline to accomplish it, UNWTO called on G20 Tourism Ministers to lead the sector’s contribution to accelerating progress towards achieving the 17 SDGs. The Goa Roadmap, developed with the Tourism Working Group, builds upon the five priority areas under India’s G20 Presidency:

The Goa Roadmap for Tourism as a Vehicle for Achieving the SDGs offers the G20 economies a proposed plan of action to lead the way forward towards a better future for all

  • Green Tourism: Recognizing the critical need to work towards climate action and environmental protection and related international cooperation, the Goa Roadmap incorporates recommended actions and good practices from G20 economies and guest countries on issues such as financing, sustainable infrastructure and resource management, integrating circular approaches in the tourism value chain and engaging visitors as key actors in sustainability.
  • Digitalization: The Roadmap makes clear the wide-ranging benefits of supporting businesses and destinations embrace digitalization, including enhanced productivity, improved infrastructure management and delivering a safer and more efficient visitor experience.
  • Skills: Reflecting one of UNWTO’s core priorities for the sector, the Roadmap emphasizes the need to provide tourism workers, particularly youth and women, with the skills employers need, to future-proof tourism jobs and to make the sector a more attractive career path.
  • Tourism MSMEs: With Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) accounting for 80% of all tourism businesses worldwide, the Roadmap emphasizes the importance of public policies and public-private partnerships in addressing key challenges, including financing, marketing and skills gaps and market access to support MSMEs through the digital and sustainable transitions.
  • Destination Management: The Roadmap presents a set of proposed actions to create a holistic approach to destination management that strengthens public-private-community partnerships and enhances a whole of government approach. It further shares examples of innovative programmes among G20 and invited countries.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “As tourism bounces back close to pre-pandemic levels, we must ensure that recovery is sustainable, inclusive and resilient. The Goa Roadmap for Tourism as a Vehicle for Achieving the SDGs offers the G20 economies a proposed plan of action to lead the way forward towards a better future for all.”

Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, added: “Tourism can be instrumental in addressing many of the challenges faced by our societies while transforming itself to address its socio-economic impacts. Working together on a common roadmap for recovery and long-term sustainability will unlock its immense potential to deliver on the SDGs.”

Reducing waste and increasing circularity

On the occasion UNWTO and the UN Environment Programme hosted the side event “Towards a circular economy of plastics in tourism – the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative”, in association with the Ministry of Tourism of India.

  • The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative provides a common vision for a circular economy of plastics in tourism. The side-event provided delegates and participants with practical guidance to address plastic pollution in tourism operations.
  • Participants included country representatives (India, Indonesia), accommodation (ITC Hotels, Leela Palaces Hotels & Resorts, The Indian Hotels Company Limited) and aviation (International Air Transport Association, IATA).
  • The Central Nodal Agency for Sustainable Tourism of India, a technical agency of the Ministry of Tourism, became a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, together with the Government of Punjab and the Responsible Tourism Society of India.

UNWTO, tourism and the G20

  • The G20 economies represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
  • In 2022, the G20 welcomed 74% of international tourists and 73% of tourism exports worldwide. In 2019, pre COVID-19 pandemic the Tourism Direct GDP reached 3.7% of the G20 economies.
