Meet Fred Finn, World’s Most Traveled Man

901 527 wttc2

Meet Fred Finn, World's Most Traveled Man - TRAVELINDEXLondon, United Kingdom, December 6, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Perhaps you’ve already met Fred Finn. He is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most traveled man — 15 million miles, including 718 flights on the Concorde.

You would remember Fred if he happened to sit next to you on a flight. The current prevailing assumption is that, once you’re seated on a plane, nobody wants to talk to you, and you don’t want to talk to anyone. (Very likely, the person next to you makes this abundantly clear by never removing earbuds or headphones. Or is it just me?)

But if Fred sits next to you, you can discover — or rediscover — the serendipitous joy of conversation with a stranger. He’s a fabulous raconteur.

He was not to the Concorde born; his first flight across the Atlantic from London took 19 hours, with intermediate stops in Iceland and Bangor, Maine, before reaching New York. But the Concorde made him an efficient lawyer on behalf of Hasbro: He could visit three countries in a day without having to check into a hotel.

He also was a regular on Pan Am 747s, where he would spend four hours at a table with random passengers over leisurely dinners. All the men in ties, of course. Flight attendants trained at London’s Savoy Hotel.

To speak with Fred is to sigh for days gone by.

And he met his share of celebrities. Nervous flyer Buddy Rich asked him to hold his hand during takeoff. He became good friends with Johnny Cash and June Carter, dining with them whenever they came to New York. On an almost empty flight, fellow passenger John Denver pulled out his guitar and gave a private concert. Fred became pals with Bruce Springsteen (“You’d sit next to and talk to people you couldn’t get a sniff of if you were on the ground”).

But you didn’t need to be famous for Fred to find you interesting. He’d always be in 9A; whoever was in 9B was fair game.

British Airways (his preferred carrier on Concorde; the food, he asserts, was far superior to the Air France version) recognized him with a Champagne ceremony on the tarmac before his 100th flight and treated him royally … until Willie Walsh became CEO and all his privileges were taken away, despite his documentation promising exceptional treatment from Walsh’s predecessor, Colin Marshall. It’s best not to mention Willie Walsh’s name to Fred. There’s still beef. (His privileges were restored after Walsh left.)

He’s a font of knowledge about travel, aviation in particular. He has lectured on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2, he’s been invited to speak to British Airways employees and he provides anecdotes and travel tips on the speaking circuit.

His autobiography, “Sonic Boom,” (2024, Finn Associates) is a delightful read.

And he keeps up with what’s going on in the air. He dismisses Boom, the emerging supersonic flight company that has secured preorders from American, United and Japan Airlines.

“First of all, it’s not a good name for an airplane,” he told me on a recent Zoom call I had with him. He said that if it flies in 2030, which is when the company says it’ll be ready, “I’ll eat my hat.”

He’s much more bullish on the X-59, under development by Lockheed Martin and NASA and designed to reach speeds of Mach 3, but with no sonic boom when traveling up to Mach 1.4. It will be able to travel quickly over populated areas, which the Concorde was not allowed to do, before really opening up above the ocean.

When it premieres, its configuration will no doubt be up to date on www.seatmaps.com, the website he co-founded.

I flew the Concorde in the season of its last flights, in 2003. At the time, I wrote that a flight attendant said that “passengers — mostly male, mostly wearing suits, mostly reading newspapers — seldom left their seats or acknowledged their fellow passengers with more than a grunt and nod.”

Except, apparently, in seats 9A and 9B.

Because the flight I took was one of the last, the plane was filled with a diverse range of people, all talking to one another. They were excited for the entire three-hour flight.

Today, travelers regard air travel as a chore. Talking with Fred, you get the sense every flight is a reason to celebrate. I confess that I don’t want to wear a tie every time I board a plane, but if the upgrade comes through, I’d be willing.

His is an appealing approach to flying. I suspect there are others who would be willing to fly in a plane full of people expecting to enjoy the experience; perhaps there’s an opportunity for a very small airline to offer not a trip back in time, but an elegant, modern experience. Perhaps even with a dress code.

And after talking to Fred, I’m inspired to take a few more chances talking to earbud-less strangers. If familiarity breeds contempt, perhaps unfamiliarity can create goodwill.

Overlooking the serene lawns and lakes of Lumpini Park, this destination offers a refreshing retreat amidst the bustling energy of the city, transforming guest experiences through intuitive service and unforgettable moments. Here, Thai tradition blends seamlessly with global influence, reflecting Bangkok’s dynamic future.

“The opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok is a pivotal milestone for our brand, as we introduce the finest personalized service and unforgettable experiences to one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant and culturally rich destinations,” said Jenni Benzaquen, Senior Vice President of The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts. “By seamlessly blending Thailand’s deep cultural heritage with The Ritz-Carlton’s timeless elegance and forward-thinking design, we are not only enhancing the city’s luxury landscape but also offering guests an experience that is both authentic and transformative.”

Inside, Thailand’s premier interior design studio, PIA, has captured the past, present, and future legacy of The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok through spaces that evoke a sense of timeless elegance and modern sophistication.

Inspired by the concept of a “Meeting of Two Civilizations”, The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok is a cultural beacon, embracing the vibrant capital built upon a rich and storied heritage. In the 1800s, Thailand envisioned a global future, seamlessly blending its cherished traditions with international influences. Wireless Road, once the enclave of Thai nobility, became a gateway to this new era of travel and exploration. Today, Bangkok radiates worldly charm and The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok reflects this dynamic culture through a refined lens, welcoming guests to a restorative, contemporary oasis. Upon arrival, a grand archway leads to the elegant foyer and The Front Hall, a drawing room adorned with original artwork and black-and-white photographs, evoking the warmth and intimacy of a private residence.

A seamless blend of classic Thai artistry and contemporary design, The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok’s rooms and suites embody a spirit of cultural exchange. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame breathtaking views, while many guestrooms offer private loggias and terraces overlooking the lush expanse of Lumpini Park. Guests are invited to choose from the spacious 50-square-meter Deluxe Rooms, the exquisitely appointed 102-square-meter Gardenia Suites, or the enchanting 127-square-meter Marigold and Amaranth Suites. Atop the hotel, The Ritz-Carlton Suite crowns the property as a 389-square-meter penthouse, offering an unrivaled setting for the most luxurious of escapes.

Perched on the 23rd floor, The Club Lounge is an exclusive and inviting retreat adorned with locally sourced treasures, offering an atmosphere of privacy and sophistication. Featuring five daily culinary presentations in a serene setting, the lounge is a key element of The Ritz-Carlton Club experience, which includes seamless check-in with a dedicated Club Concierge and bespoke in-room amenities for an unparalleled level of personalized service.

Three exceptional dining experiences transport guests through distinct culinary worlds, each offering its unique take on flavor and atmosphere.

Duet by David Toutain, led by the eponymous Michelin-starred chef and culinary prodigy Valentin Fouache serves modern French cuisine in a stunning glasshouse. This innovative concept explores the harmonious duality of food and nature, showcasing meticulously sourced ingredients and artisanal produce in a sensorial dining experience. Lily’s, a vibrant and lively restaurant, reimagines classic dishes with a contemporary twist, offering customizable sharing plates that cater to groups of all sizes. Interactive elements engage diners, creating dynamic and unique culinary memories. By day or night, Caleō – derived from the Latin for ‘being in love’ – captures the essence of romance and indulgence. Set against sweeping vistas, this luxurious lounge invites guests to savor elegant afternoon teas or late-night cocktails, where dramatic, theatrical libations provide a multi-sensory delight.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa is a haven of tranquility, where guests can rejuvenate their mind, body, and soul. The sophisticated sanctuary fosters well-being with five exquisite treatment rooms, a couple’s spa suite, and a relaxing pod, complemented by a state-of-the-art fitness center designed for invigorating workouts. Nestled amidst the lush greenery, two sparkling swimming pools – including a dedicated kids’ pool – offer refreshing retreats from the tropical climate. Meanwhile, young explorers are engaged and entertained at the Ritz Kids Club, where spirited activities await.

The Ritz-Carlton Grand Ballroom, the largest of its kind in the city, can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The dedicated events floor presents nine flexible function spaces. These incredible, opulent rooms celebrate special occasions such as weddings, corporate events, and gala dinners. With pre-function areas and an outdoor terrace, the main ballroom boasts three LED screens to bring every event to life.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok uniquely connects both luxurious stays to local touchpoints through special daily offerings to esteemed guests. Among these, is the Defining Moment, where guests are invited to the Terrace to experience a new interpretation of a daily “Klong Yao” (Long Drum) ceremony. Devised by The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, the moving sounds signal the start of evening celebrations. A series of activities serve as Supporting Scenes to create memorable experiences throughout the day. Morning sessions of ‘Terrace Chi’ tai chi, set against the serene backdrop of the park, invite guests to start their day with tranquility. The ‘New Generation’ creative tours of the One Bangkok Art Loop offer a fresh perspective on the local art scene, while the ‘Lasting Impression’ flower-pressing activity engages young explorers in a hands-on experience. As the day unfolds, guests can savor ‘Golden Hour’ cocktails inspired by captivating stories from Bangkok’s rich heritage.”

“As the first Ritz-Carlton property in Bangkok, we bring local traditions and culture alive through imaginative, immersive experiences, including performances, activities, and artistic journeys,” says Tina Liu, the hotel’s General Manager. “Our stays are designed to create memorable moments that resonate with our guests, paying homage to Thailand’s ‘cultural bloom’ – the evolution from its graceful past to its exciting future.”

The festival brought together the world’s most passionate travelers, industry experts, and innovators, solidifying its reputation as a premier celebration of global exploration.

At this year’s festival was the unveiling of the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index (MTI), a revolutionary initiative set to redefine how travel achievements are measured and celebrated.  The event spotlighted the world’s top travelers, announcing the five most accomplished explorers based on the inaugural ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index rankings. These trailblazers are:

  • Michael Runkel (Germany)
  • João Paulo Peixoto (Portugal)
  • Thomas Buechler (Switzerland)
  • Harry Mitsidis (UK/Greece)
  • Pawel Krzyk (Poland)

About the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index

The ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index, named in honor of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, is designed to track and quantify the accomplishments of modern-day travelers. Magellan’s legacy as the first leader of a circumnavigation of the globe (1519–1522) resonates deeply with the ethos of today’s explorers, who continue to push the boundaries of discovery and adventure.

Key Objectives of the Index:

  • Celebrate Achievement: The MTI recognizes extraordinary travel accomplishments, fostering a sense of community and inspiration among global explorers.
  • Promote Exploration: By honoring figures like Magellan and modern adventurers, the index bridges the past and present, encouraging a spirit of curiosity and bravery.
  • Set a Global Benchmark: Created by ABS in partnership with ETF, the MTI aims to establish a universal standard for evaluating travel achievements.

A Combination of Quantitative and Qualitative Factors

The ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index is based on two main factors, each given equal weight: Quality of Travel (QL) and Quantity of Travel (QT).

Quantity of Travel (QT) is determined by how many regions a traveler has explored, based on membership in the three most important travel clubs:

  • Most Traveled People (MTP)
  • NomadMania
  • Travel Century Club (TCC)

Quality of Travel (QL) is evaluated using four key criterions:

  • UNESCO Sites: number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) visited.
  • Tentative List: number of sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List visited.
  • Capitals: number of capitals of countries and territories visited.
  • Borders: number of land or sea borders crossed.

Recognizing Modern-Day Explorers

The launch of the MTI at the ETF is a tribute to the evolving nature of travel. From reaching remote corners of the globe to engaging with diverse cultures, today’s explorers carry forward the torch of historical figures like Magellan. The five honorees embody this adventurous spirit.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index,” said Ric Gazarian. “It not only celebrates the legacies of historical explorers but also shines a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of today’s global travelers. This index is a tool to inspire and challenge adventurers around the world.”

A New Era in Travel Recognition

One of Saffron’s most recent features is a Chef’s Table evening when guests can be treated to a gueridon-style table service by one of the kitchen’s chefs who specialise in Thai and Southern Thai cuisines. The chef guides the diners through the preparation of Thai cuisine in an educational and entertaining setting, and outlines local techniques and recipes including the famed Tom Yum Koong, a traditional spicy prawn soup with condensed milk, lemongrass, mushroom and coriander.

The Chef’s Table dinners are complemented by Thailand’s own Monsoon Valley wines, which have surprised many a connoisseur in recent years with their full-bodied flavours.

“The Michelin Guide rating shows great recognition of our Saffron culinary team and their daily dedication to and love of producing excellent food,” said Director of Food & Beverage and Cuisine Rainer Roersch. “We have already seen an increase in outside customers who have become aware of Saffron through the Michelin Guide. Our aim is to satisfy each and every guest with outstanding food and exemplary service.”

Saffron’s host hotel, the 5-star Banyan Tree Samui, was among the recipients when Michelin recently announced an inaugural ranking system of “keys” to acclaim the most outstanding hotels in the world. The 2024 Michelin Guide hotel selection in Thailand included a total of eight Three-Key hotels (its highest decoration), 19 Two-Key hotels, and 31 One Key hotels. Each hotel had been anonymously visited and assessed by Michelin inspectors. Banyan Tree Samui was recognised with two “keys”.

In addition to recognition in the prestigious Michelin, Saffron has received a Best Restaurant Award four times by Tatler Magazine.

The 88-key Banyan Tree Samui is a luxury all-pool villa resort, with a pristine beach, blissful spa escapes, exquisite dining offerings, a personal concierge, and unparalleled views of the Gulf of Thailand. The 38-acre property is rich in flora and plant life, and its private beach is flanked by coral reefs.

The resort hosts three restaurants, a spa with Banyan Tree’s signature Rainforest hydrotherapy facility, a fitness centre, a kids’ club, a meetings and events centre, and a library.

Meliá Hanoi Launches Cham Exquisite Cantonese Cuisine

900 600 wttc2

Meliá Hanoi Launches Cham Exquisite Cantonese Cuisine - TRAVELINDEXHanoi, Vietnam, December 4, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / A new dining destination in Vietnam’s capital, Cham Cantonese Kitchen, celebrates its official launch on December 6th, with a chef takeover that will see two top female chefs teaming up in the Cham kitchen for the evening.

For the launch event, created in partnership between Meliá Hanoi and Vietcetera, Summer Le, the head chef of Vietnam’s first MICHELIN Green Star award winner, Nén Danang, will showcase her skills alongside Cham’s Le Thi Thai, the seasoned head dim sum chef who has nearly three decades of experience in the industry.

Over the last 18 months Meliá Hanoi’s gastronomy offerings have undergone a complete reimagining. Cham now offers a dining experience that harkens back to 1960s Hong Kong with masterly chefs crafting authentic Cantonese cuisine with a modern touch.

Last year Meliá Hanoi’s Garbo Bar opened, drawing inspiration from the golden era of ‘50’s Hollywood with its new sleek gold and emerald green bar counter, along with Mosaico, the hotel’s all-day restaurant which reflects the hotel’s European heritage with its Mediterranean fare. The revitalized restaurants are helping position the property as a sought-after dining destination.

From the elegant interior design to the new menu vision, Cham Cantonese Kitchen is an entirely new upscale eatery that incorporates the best of the region offering a dining experience that is both authentic and innovative.

“In Vietnamese and Cantonese cooking, the dipping sauce nuoc cham is at the heart of the meal. It’s the taste that brings everything together,” explained Dominik Tschurr, Director of Food & Beverage at Meliá Hanoi. “Our new name Cham captures the multifaceted power of this ingredient and the importance of unity and connecting together with friends, family and colleagues.”

Under the direction of Le Thi Thai, Cham Cantonese Kitchen will highlight what she does best: dim sum. Thai started her career in 1996 when the first international hotel in Hanoi opened. For close to two decades, she developed her skills in a Cantonese kitchen before switching to the contemporary John Anthony restaurant where she spent nine years. Over the course of her career, she has worked alongside Chinese Master chefs including Chan Wing Kwong – former head chef at Michelin-starred Crystal Jade Golden Palace in Singapore.

“I have had the chance to work with many Chinese and Singaporean dim sum masters over the course of my career,” said Le Thi Thai. “Through these rich experiences and tutelage I believe I’ve been able to perfect my craft.”

Highlights from the dim sum menu include crab claw steam buns, spicy xiao long bao (soup dumplings), and pork and abalone siu mai. The menu draws inspiration from the diverse culinary landscape throughout China with dishes such as hot & sour Sichuan seafood soup, lobster cooked Beijing-style, and braised abalone with mushroom, to name a few. Each dish is expertly crafted by talented chefs who have years of experience in crafting Cantonese delicacies.

In the future innovative tableside offerings will be introduced including smoked duck served tableside and beggar’s chicken, a show-stopping dish that involves a succulent chicken that is baked whole after being coated in clay. Post-oven the unassuming-looking clay-coated dish is cracked open with a hammer to reveal a juicy chicken inside.

Chinese liquor and creative cocktails inspired by Chinese flavors, are also on offer alongside an international selection of wine.

Located on Meliá Hanoi’s first floor, the renovated restaurant has a green, leafy outlook from floor-to-ceiling windows. The completely remodeled interior features a warm color palette of dark teal and burnt orange. The decor creates a vintage China atmosphere with a residential vibe inviting guests to feel like they’re dining within an upscale home in China.

Cham Cantonese Kitchen has a seating capacity of 92 and is open daily for lunch and dinner. Book your next experience at Cham.

The Hari Hong Kong Hailed as World Leader in Sustainability

925 510 wttc2

The Hari Hong Kong Hailed as World Leader in Sustainability - TRAVELINDEXHong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, December 4, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The globe’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for sustainable travel and tourism has awarded The Hari Hong Kong ‘EarthCheck Benchmarked Bronze status’ for its raft of sustainability measures.

EarthCheck’s certification programs involve stringent benchmarking to bolster sustainability and help consumers make informed decisions. The certification draws on more than 30 years of EarthCheck working with research centres and universities globally to address sustainability and climate change issues facing tourism destinations, communities and businesses.

To achieve Benchmarked Bronze status, The Hari Hong Kong has excelled across key performance areas including energy efficiency, water use, carbon emissions, chemicals, community and employee impact, paper use, waste and more.

EarthCheck deemed the hotel a “Regional Leader”, meaning an “exemplary standard of performance for the type and location of an operation”, in areas such as waste sent to landfill, energy consumption and potable water consumption. The Hari Hong Kong’s waste sent to landfill, for example, was 3.3L per guest night, a third of the regional average of 9.4L per guest per night. The hotel’s energy consumption per guest per night was 90.5 MJ, half the regional average of 180.3 MJ per guest per night. Its potable water consumption was 223.3L per guest per night, less than two thirds of the regional average of 360.9L per guest per night.

“We know that your team has worked incredibly hard to reach this milestone, which demonstrates your commitment to preserving and enhancing your natural surroundings, cultural heritage, local community and economy,” EarthCheck said. “Thank you for being a world leader in sustainability.”

From the outset, The Hari Hong Kong, which opened in December 2020 in the heart of vibrant Wan Chai, was established through sustainable design and construction which sought to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The hotel then achieved EarthCheck evaluation in 2022, began working on the certification programme at the beginning of this year and will target EarthCheck Silver status for next year.

“To continually improve in environmental and social sustainability, our commitment extends to energy efficiency, water conservation, reduction of waste and single-use plastic, solid waste management, community involvement, training and education, support of local employment, and minimizing our carbon footprint; present in The Hari sustainability action plan, each measured against the annual Benchmarking Assessment of EarthCheck,” said The Hari Hong Kong’s General Manager Edward E. Snoeks.

“We are also dedicated to growing in an organic and sustainable manner through continuous monitoring of our consumption, purchasing responsibly and fostering positive relationships with our local suppliers, stakeholders, and the wider community alike.”

The Hari Hong Kong is also a LEED (Silver), BEAM Plus (Silver) and BEEO certified hotel in recognition for its sustainable design, construction and energy efficiency performance.

A green wall on the facade of the hotel’s second floor terrace stretches three stories high, bringing down the temperature of surrounding areas between two to four degrees Celsius.

In addition to its sustainability measures, the hotel also supports local charities, such as, for example, the Hong Chi Association to help provide education, training and empowerment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The Hari will direct all proceeds from its upcoming Christmas Market in the lobby on Dec. 9 from 5pm to Hong Chi.

Spearheading the likes of The Hari Art Prize in support of emerging artists, The Hari Chronicles to foster ongoing conversations about art, design and culture, and the new “The Hari Neighbourhood Guide Audio Tour” which ventures off the beaten track, The Hari Hong Kong also has a deep connection with art, culture, and its community.

About The Hari Hong Kong
Opened in December 2020, The Hari Hong Kong is the vision of Dr. Aron Harilela, Chairman and CEO of Harilela Hotels Ltd, and the second hotel to open under the ‘The Hari’ brand. The first hotel, The Hari London opened in August 2016. The Harilela Group was established in 1959 and is still wholly owned by the Harilela family. The Harilela Group is the parent company of Harilela Hotels which owns 15 properties across Hong Kong, China, Asia, Europe, and the US.
