Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor 1932 Unveils New Khmer Tasting Menus

900 600 wttc2

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor 1932 Unveils New Khmer Tasting MenusThe acclaimed Khmer fine-dining restaurant 1932 at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap has unveiled exclusive new tasting menus as it continues to elevate and redefine haute gastronomy in Cambodia.

The hotel’s Khmer tasting menus were launched last year as a way to introduce diners to the distinctive flavours of the Southeast Asian cuisine. The popularity of the dining experience prompted 1932 to update the menus with several exciting new dishes available this month.

Some highlights from the new menu include Bangkorng Takeo made with Takeo freshwater lobster, Khmer thermidor sauce, morning glory and oyster sauce; Num Krouk, a Khmer rice cake with sweet and sour sauce, and lime; and Sach Ko Lok Lak, a Tajima striploin with Kampot pepper, crudite, turmeric and garlic fried rice.

“The dishes on the new Khmer tasting menu at 1932 feature the freshest, locally grown, seasonal ingredients, ensuring an outstanding representation of Cambodian flavours at their very finest,” said Executive Sous Chef Dorn Doeurt, an expert in authentic Royal Khmer cuisine and modern Khmer gastronomy, who designed the menus.

The tasting menus are categorized by decades/periods, including the 1930s (“The Reign of King Sisowath Norodom” priced at $90++), 1950s (“The Grand Renaissance” priced at $60++), 1960s (“The Golden Age” priced at $70++) and 1990s (“The Raffles Grand Legacy” priced at $100++). All are offered with an optional wine pairing and dishes can also be ordered à la carte.

“The new tasting menus at 1932 showcase the exquisite range and remarkable tastes of Khmer cuisine in a fine-dining experience that’s second to none as an introduction to Cambodia’s top culinary offerings,” said Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor General Manager Joseph Colina.

Earlier this year, World’s 50 Best spotlighted 1932 in its Discovery list, saying the restaurant’s cuisine “delights the palate as the chefs navigate decades of Khmer culinary heritage.”

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor was named one of the world’s “500 Best Hotels” by the industry-leading Travel + Leisure magazine in April for a third straight year. The historic hotel was also honored as one of Cambodia’s finest—with special recognition for its swimming pool and spa—in the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific in June.

The 92-year-old luxury hotel is on the doorstep of ancient Khmer archeological sites in Cambodia and is considered a national treasure. Originally opened in 1932, the hotel was built as a rest stop for archeologists and adventurers seeking to explore the ancient kingdom of Angkor Wat, which is today one of the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Vietnam Golf Coast Clubs Tee Up Stronger Community Ties

900 506 wttc2

Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) clubs are strengthening community bonds in Central Vietnam via public-spirited initiatives.

The VGC, a destination marketing collaboration between three of the area’s signature golf clubs—Laguna Golf Lang Co, Montgomerie Links, and Ba Na Hills Golf Club—has made community engagement a cornerstone of its mission.

The clubs are attracting golf enthusiasts from around the globe to a destination that has emerged as one of Asia’s most enticing hubs for play. At the same time, they are dedicating resources and efforts towards the betterment of the communities in which they operate.

This commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) is embodied through various projects that contribute significantly to the welfare of local communities.

A standout initiative under this banner is Green Hope 2024, a life-saving project that addresses one of the most pressing issues in Vietnam today—child drowning. Drowning ranks among the top ten causes of death for children aged 5-14 in Vietnam, particularly in rural areas where access to swimming education is limited.

Green Hope 2024, supported by VGC linchpin Montgomerie Links, offers free swimming lessons and anti-drowning skills to children in Quang Nam province.

“Our role extends beyond providing world-class golf experiences. By equipping children with essential life skills, we are investing in the future of our community,” said Le Vo Hoang Van, club manager at Montgomerie Links.

Efforts to foster community ties are also in strong evidence at Laguna Golf Lang Co, a club renowned for its sustainability and CSR programs. Its “edible golf course” initiative — where resident water buffalo tend the rice fields on the course — has captured the imagination of a global audience. The paddies yield up to 20 tons of rice used to support the organic farm at Laguna Lang Co and donated to families and seniors in the area.

Other important initiatives include free golf lessons in local schools. This initiative promotes the sport among young people and teaches important values such as discipline, teamwork, and respect for others. These lessons, taught by professional instructors from the clubs, are offered free of charge and are part of a broader effort to make golf more accessible to the youth of Central Vietnam.

“As we introduce golf to local students, we’re not just teaching them a sport—we’re providing them with skills and values that will benefit them in all aspects of life,” said Stephen Banks, director of golf at Laguna Golf Lang Co

Vietnam Golf Coast clubs regularly organise fundraising golf events. These events serve as vital platforms for raising funds for local charities and community projects. Funds are channelled towards various causes, including education, healthcare, and environmental conservation, reinforcing the clubs’ commitment to being a force for good in the community.

The Vietnam Golf Coast clubs also contribute to the local economy through employment. The clubs employ a significant number of local staff — as caddies, greenkeepers, admin, and hospitality roles — offering stable jobs with competitive wages and opportunities for professional development.

“Our clubs are deeply intertwined with the local community, and we see our employees as an integral part of our success,” said Gary Dixon, General Manager of Ba Na Hills Golf Club. “By offering meaningful employment, we are helping to sustain local families and contributing to the broader economic health of the region.”

Metropole Hanoi’s Angelina Awarded Habanos Lounge Elite Cigar Bar Status

900 599 wttc2

Angelina, the bespoke cocktail bar, whisky lounge and restaurant at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, has been officially recognized as a “Habanos Lounge,” a designation reserved for the world’s most elite cigar bars.

angelina’s humidor features a carefully curated selection of premium Habanos Global brands, including legendary cigar labels such as Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Partagas and H. Upmann. The “Habanos Lounge” status underscores angelina’s commitment to providing an unparalleled experience for cigar lovers. angelina is the first Habanos Lounge in Vietnam’s capital.

“Our stylish bar, lounge and restaurant is the perfect spot to savor the rich flavors and aromas of an expertly hand-rolled Cuban cigar – perhaps as a way to cap off a rustic New World meal at angelina or alongside a pour from our world-class whisky collection,” said Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi General Manager George Koumendakos.

Habanos Lounges, a designation first established in the early 2000s, are required to have at least 60% Cuban cigars on their menu. The cigars must be constantly stored in a humidity- and temperature-controlled area (either a walk-in humidor or electric humidor cabin). The lounges also must meet other criteria on staff training, dedicated smoking areas and others.

The latest recognition follows other recent honors and developments at Metropole Hanoi. The hotel was awarded a Five-Star rating, the top level of distinction, from Forbes Travel Guide in February for a fifth consecutive year. And the 123-year-old luxury property was named one of the “World’s 500 Best Hotels” by the influential U.S.-based Travel + Leisure magazine in May.

The hotel’s Metropole Heritage Wing, with 103 guest rooms and suites, was meticulously restored and renovated under a 21-month construction project before reopening to guests in December. The new interiors maintain their traditional aesthetic and feel, and incorporate select original fixtures, while also introducing a considerable measure of bespoke comfort, advanced technology and vibrant color.

The comprehensive reconstruction work was centered on the original wing of the hotel, which was established in 1901 and has played host over the decades to numerous heads of state and royalty, along with world-renowned actors, writers, musicians and others.

PATA to Kick off PATA Travel Mart 2024 with Media Event at the FCC of Thailand

779 473 wttc2
pata-to-kick-off-pata-travel-mart-2024-with-media-event-at-the-fcc-of-thailand.jpg

Bangkok, Thailand, August 22, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / For the first time, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) will hold a media conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) to share its travel outlook for the region and establish new channels of communication with the world’s leading publications and broadcasting outlets. The event will kick off PATA Travel Mart 2024 (PTM 2024) to be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok between August 27-29.

Now in its 47th edition, PATA Travel Mart is one of Asia Pacific’s longest-standing international travel trade exhibitions. This year marks the 25th anniversary of PATA’s establishment in Thailand, adding to the event’s significance.

In addition to the Travel Mart, the event also includes:

– The PATA Youth Symposium & Career Fair to be held at Dusit Thani College on August 27
– The PATA Knowledge Forum at QSNCC on August 27
– The PATA Gold Awards Lunch and Awards Presentation hosted by Macao Government Tourism Office on August 28

Based in Bangkok, the FCCT is Southeast Asia’s premier club of foreign journalists comprising senior editors and reporters for BBC, CNN, the New York Times, The Economist, Nikkei Asian Review, the Singapore Straits Times, Bernama, Xinhua and many more.

“It is very important for PATA and the Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry to reach out to global media, as the industry in the region has still not fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. The operating environment, while generally positive, is still marked by pockets of turbulence. PATA is well placed to be a part of the solution, which makes it very critical at this juncture to take our message to a wider audience,” said PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid.

Mr Hamid said the establishment of this important channel of communication has been long overdue.

“I believe global media can play a very positive role in helping us reach decision-makers at the highest levels in both the public and private sectors. Sharing PATA’s rich knowledge-base on regional issues and trends, plus toolkits of policy prescriptions on topics such as sustainability and technological change, will help many of the influential consumer, business and economic media better understand the challenges facing the travel and tourism sector and upgrade the quality of their coverage,” he added.

He noted that in addition to the media conference, PATA has invited the FCCT members to register for PTM 2024 and attend both the opening ceremony and the PATA Gold Awards Lunch and Awards Presentation. They have also been allowed access to the trade show floor to network with the PTM buyers and sellers on condition they do not interrupt the business sessions.

Mr Hamid thanked the PATA Executive Board and Board for supporting this important strategic communications move, especially PATA Chair Peter Semone. A special thanks is also due to the Sanya Tourism Board for agreeing to host the media briefing at the FCCT.

He said the link with the FCCT will also help raise PATA’s profile in the region and give value-added benefits to PATA membership.

“Both the FCCT and PATA are based right here in Bangkok. Therefore it makes sense for us to forge a win-win partnership, using PTM 2024 as a launchpad. We hope to hold many more events at the FCCT in future. PATA members visiting Bangkok are also welcome to hold media events at the FCCT, which PATA will be happy to coordinate.”

He expressed hope that the event will add to the overall success of the PTM 2024.

Hyatt to Acquire Standard International and its Iconic Hotel Brands

Hyatt to Acquire Standard International and its Iconic Hotel Brands - TRAVELINDEXHyatt to Acquire Standard International and its Iconic Hotel Brands, The Standard and Bunkhouse Hotels, Expanding Its Leading Position in Lifestyle Hospitality

Formation of new lifestyle group to combine best-in-class lifestyle brand leadership and talent with Hyatt’s global distribution network and award-winning World of Hyatt loyalty program

Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the planned acquisition of the brands and most of the affiliates of pioneering lifestyle company Standard International, parent company of The Standard and Bunkhouse Hotels brands. This move enhances Hyatt’s position as the leader in the industry’s premier lifestyle space, building on both its organic growth and a series of acquisitions that quintupled the number of lifestyle rooms in Hyatt’s global portfolio between 2017 and 2023. The transaction is anticipated to close later this year, subject to customary closing conditions.

With this transaction, Hyatt will form a new dedicated lifestyle group that will be headquartered in New York City. Led by Standard International’s Executive Chairman Amar Lalvani, the lifestyle group will leverage Hyatt’s best-in-class operational and loyalty infrastructure while assuming distinct leadership across key functions including experience creation, design, marketing, programming, public relations, restaurants, nightlife and entertainment. The new lifestyle group will be made up of the talented Standard International team as well as Hyatt colleagues – more details about the lifestyle group will be shared following the closing of the transaction.

The planned acquisition will continue Hyatt’s evolution to a brand- and experience-driven company. The acquired portfolio will be 100 percent asset-light and includes management, franchise and license contracts for 21 open hotels with approximately 2,000 rooms, including The Standard, London, The Standard, High Line in New York City, The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon and boutique treasures like Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin, Texas and Hotel San Cristóbal in Baja California, Mexico. Following the closing of the transaction, Hyatt plans to integrate these hotels into World of Hyatt, bringing this portfolio of celebrated lifestyle properties to the program’s 48 million loyalty members.

Upon closing, the sale will cap a successful investment for Sansiri PLC, which acquired a majority position in Standard International in 2017 and facilitated the company’s international expansion. Sansiri will continue to own several properties that will be managed or franchised under the acquired brands.

“The team behind Standard International has created a unique and award-winning portfolio of brands and properties that turn the status quo on its head and have attracted a loyal following among the most discerning lifestyle guests for the past 25 years,” said Mark Hoplamazian, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hyatt. “These properties truly drive the zeitgeist, creating destinations unto themselves with celebrated and talked-about programming and events, such as the Met Gala afterparty. We are thrilled to welcome Standard International’s properties and team to the Hyatt family with the newly created lifestyle group and draw on their brilliance, creativity, culture and innovation.”

Upon closing, Lalvani will take on the role of President & Creative Director of the lifestyle group, overseeing the integration of the brands to be housed within the group while ensuring and enhancing the integrity, innovation, creativity and growth of each individual lifestyle brand.

Lalvani led the global development of W Hotels and then in 2010 partnered with André Balazs on The Standard brand. In 2013, Lalvani formed Standard International and acquired The Standard brand from Balazs and followed that with an acquisition of a majority stake in The Bunkhouse Group from its founder Liz Lambert and her partners. Thereafter, Lalvani spearheaded the transitions of both companies from founder-led start-ups to globally recognized brands through the development of landmark properties.

“We waited a long time to find the right company with whom to join forces,” said Lalvani. “In choosing Hyatt, we tap into a powerful global infrastructure and loyal guest base. I am very proud that our team has delivered on the potential we saw with The Standard and Bunkhouse Hotels and am honored that Hyatt appreciates how special our brands, properties, and – most importantly – our people are. We have a shared vision for the enormous potential that still lies ahead. I would be remiss not to express my gratitude to Hyatt for taking this bold step forward and to Sansiri who has been instrumental in supporting our efforts.”

In addition to The Standard and Bunkhouse Hotels brands, Standard International’s brand portfolio includes Peri Hotels and its two newest additions, The StandardX, which launched this month in Melbourne, Australia, and The Manner, which launches next month in Soho, New York in time for New York Fashion Week. Beyond its hotel brands, the portfolio includes world-class restaurant and nightlife concepts including The Boom Boom Room, The Standard Grill, The Standard Biergarten, Café Standard, Lido Bayside Grill, Jo’s Coffee as well as iconic rooftop venues including Le Bain, Decimo, Sweeties, UP, Ojo and Sky Beach.

The acquisition includes more than 30 projects with a signed agreement or letter of intent, including new properties expected to open over the next 12 months: The Standard, Pattaya Na Jomtien, The StandardX, Bangkok Phra Arthit, as well as Bunkhouse Hotels Saint Augustine and Hotel Daphne. Standard International has also developed a robust residential business with Standard Residences under development in Miami, Lisbon, Phuket, Hua Hin and Mexico City as well as completed Bunkhouse Residences at the Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin.

Upon closing, Hyatt will pay a base purchase price of $150 million, with up to an additional $185 million over time as additional properties enter the portfolio. Stabilized fees associated with the base purchase price are anticipated to be approximately $17 million and, to the extent the contingent purchase price is paid, additional stabilized fees are anticipated to be up to approximately $30 million.

In connection with the transaction, Moelis & Company LLC served as financial advisor to Hyatt and Venable LLP acted as its legal advisor.

The term “Hyatt” is used in this release for convenience to refer to Hyatt Hotels Corporation and/or one or more of its affiliates.

Bangkok, Thailand, August 20, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Ministry of Culture, Department of Cultural Promotion and B. Grimm Group Ltd., will present a concert titled “Sergei Babayan plays Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24th, at the Thailand Cultural Centre. This concert will be on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother’s Birthday on August 12th, 2024.

The Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan was born into a musical family in Armenia, Babayan began his studies there with Georgy Saradjev and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Following his first trip outside of the USSR in 1989, he won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions, including the Cleveland International Piano Competition, the Hamamatsu Piano Competition, and the Scottish International Piano Competition. Babayan regularly performs at many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus and Munich’s Prinzregententheater, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Maison de la Radio in Paris, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Alte Oper Frankfurt, and the Zurich Tonhalle. Mr. Babayan performs with the world’s foremost orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

This concert will be conducted by maestro Tomàs Grau, the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Franz Schubert Filharmonia, the RBSO will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

Rachmaninoff was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Thus, when he composed his concertos, he wrote them for himself. The third concerto was written for his first visit to America, and its second performance was conducted by no less a legend than Gustav Mahler himself, with the composer at the piano. Today, the voluptuous melodies, the massive chord sonorities and the luscious Romantic dimensions seem old-fashioned for a 20th-century composer. But more and more people recognise that they have an irresistible dramatic force, no matter their generation.

Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, first performed in November 1937, was simple and had direct musical language, extended well-shaped melodies, and, above all, a positive fanfare at the end. At the same time, it has a seriousness and complexity that lifts it. The first movement displays great ingenuity in controlling tempo from slow to fast and back. In contrast, the finale gives the brass and percussion a chance to flex their muscles and hammer home the message of triumph in the major key.
