InterContinental Bangkok’s 2023 mooncakes perfectly blend Thai tradition and distinctive flavours, with an exquisite gift box inspired by the beauty of a traditional Phuang Malai, a symbol of good luck, respect and honour, whereas the round shape of the garland box symbolises completeness and reunion, embellished in royal blue and elegant glittering gold patterns that pay homage to Bangkok’s skyline.

Celebrate the Joy of Chinese Cuisine at Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town

1080 451 wttc2

Celebrate the Joy of Chinese Cuisine at Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town - TRAVELINDEXPhuket, Thailand, July 31, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town has revealed details of Yue Restaurant & Bar, its brand-new Chinese dining destination which is set to open its doors in the third quarter of 2023, with a unique design concept inspired by the classical grace of Chinese culture and Phuket’s industrial heritage.

Phuket has been shaped by the Chinese settlers who traveled to Southern Thailand from the 16th Century to work in the tin mining trade. This  “Peranakan” community thrived and the urban landscape of Phuket Town now reflects this historical influence through its architecture, temples and cuisine.

Yue, which means “happiness” in Chinese, will honor this rich heritage by bringing the joy of highly authentic Chinese dining to the heart of Phuket’s old town. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s culinary experience will celebrate the timeless culinary traditions of the Middle Kingdom. Talented chefs will focus on the flavors of Cantonese cuisine, including a selection of fresh, handcrafted dim sum and premium teas.

The dragon is an important and auspicious symbol in Chinese folklore and Yue’s interiors feature eye-catching elements that focus on the dragon dance, which is performed at many of Phuket festivals. The dance’s flowing movement is represented by Yue’s red seating, which appears to weave through the center of the restaurant, as well as in its artistic ceiling. Many of the design features are also influenced by the island’s industrial history, including statement pieces made from rock and tin.

Diners can choose from a range of seating options, from intimate tables to social booth-style seating, with a mixture of arrangements that complement the atmosphere and aesthetic. Three private dining rooms also provide exclusive options for special occasions, with elegant decorative elements that reflect the island’s unique backstory and contemporary Cantonese sophistication.

Yue will become the fourth dining venue at Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town, each of which embraces aspects of Phuket’s diverse culture. Krua Talad Yai is a vibrant culinary marketplace that showcases authentic Southern Thai and international cuisine, Talung Lounge is a popular coffee shop by day and bar by night, and Kolae Pool Bar is an alfresco space where guests can grab light bites and cool refreshments, including tropical juices and local craft beers, overlooking the pool and Phuket Town.

Nestled on the 2nd floor of Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town, Yue Restaurant & Bar is set to become a popular place to dine and unwind for hotel guests and local residents alike.

Avana Retreat Opens Nature Sanctuary for Animals in the Mountains

900 600 wttc2

Avana Retreat Opens Nature Sanctuary for Animals in the Mountains - TRAVELINDEXHanoi, Vietnam, July 25, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Avana Retreat is broadening its sustainability efforts past flora to fauna with the introduction of the Bamboo Forest, a nature sanctuary for animals amid their verdant landscape.

The Bamboo Forest features a stone-lined stream, towering bamboo, lush grass, and, most importantly, a broad mix of animals living harmoniously within the space.

“The Bamboo Forest is one of the most promising projects to contribute to our vision of sustainability,” said Mr. Vu Huy, founder of Avana Retreat. “Making use of our abundant land, we are encouraging biodiversity, a healthy ecosystem, and positive conservation practices.

Avana Retreat worked with a specialist to integrate the current animals, which include deer, goats, rabbits, pigs, chickens, ducks and peacocks. In-house guests are invited to have hands-on experiences so they can learn about animal welfare, and be more aware of the environment, especially wildlife.

“We have our own animal ‘whisperer’ on-site,” said Huy. “He’s here first, leaves last, and has already built a strong connection with them – feeding them, communicating with them, learning their names, and showing them how to be around humans.”

While the animals are all free to roam and interact with each other during the day they also have their own shelters they can return to in the evening.

The Bamboo Forest is one of many long-term eco-projects at the property. The resort has a formidable ongoing tree planting project (10,000 trees and counting), cultural initiatives to maintain ethnic minority traditions, organic farming, neighborhood trash collecting partnerships with youth groups, and a no-plastic policy with water being purified and bottled on site.

The Bamboo Forest is open from 9 AM – 11 AM and 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM daily.

ROUND-UP: July 24-28, 2023

600 275 wttc2

Canada got a new transport minister last week, while those planning a trip to Europe to next year learned they’d have to apply (and pay for) a new permit; in other round-up news of the week, ACTA and CATO continued their squabble with TICO, top airline arrival numbers lagged, Air Canada was on the move in Dubai, and WestJet released its expanded winter 2023 flight schedule.

NEWS

Pablo Rodriguez has been sworn in as Canada’s new transport minister, taking on a long list of turbulent issues as the aviation sector emerges from a period of crisis. Leaving his spot atop the Heritage Department, Rodriguez takes over from Omar Alghabra, who assumed the cabinet post in January 2021.

Starting in 2024, Canadians – amongst others – seeking a short-term visit to 30 European countries including France, Switzerland, Spain, and Greece, will have apply to the European Travel Information and Authorization System. The European permit costs €7, or about $10.25, and can be obtained on the ETIAS website or mobile app. It allows travellers to visit for up to 90 days within any 180-day period and is valid for three years, or until the “passport” used in the application expires. Travellers younger than 18 and older than 70 years are exempt from payment, as are family members of EU citizens or of non-EU nationals who can move freely in the European Union.

ACTA and CATO took the unprecedented step of withdrawing their appointees from the TICO Board until they are given the opportunity to meet with the Ontario Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery, Kaleed Rasheed. The two associations are also asking for a copy of TICO’s recommendations to the Ontario government on future fees and Compensation Fund funding. TICO replied that it “remains steadfast in its commitment to consumer protection and will continue to actively engage with all stakeholders.”

TICO

Holy Destinations Travel Inc., a travel agency located in Nepean, Ont., had its provincial registration revoked under the Travel Industry Act, 2002 effective July 26, 2023. Holy Destinations Travel Inc. specialized in Islamic holy pilgrimages – including Hajj and Umrah – to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. TICO says it had received consumer complaints, alleging that the travel agency collected consumer payments without providing the travel services consumers had purchased.

AIR

WestJet announced its winter schedule, operating 230 direct routes from Canada to the southern US, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America this winter, while also extending key domestic and international routes from summer to year-round service. Featuring four new and four returning routes, WestJet’s winter sked will see more than 85 daily departures on average to sun destinations from Canada gateways. Among the new is non-stop seasonal service between Toronto and Bonaire, beginning Dec. 12.

Porter Airlines is expanding its Western Canada network with the addition of a non-stop route between Ottawa and Edmonton. The new route begins Oct. 4, with one daily roundtrip flight operated on the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Air Canada‘s Dubai operations have moved to Dubai International’s (DXB) flagship Terminal 3. The co-location of operations, along with Emirates, will significantly improve the experience for customers transiting in Dubai between the Americas on Air Canada and the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Africa on Emirates, who will benefit from the convenience of remaining in the same terminal.

BY THE NUMBERS

Canada’s two biggest airlines saw a far higher proportion of their flights delayed this summer than many of their American peers, according to figures from an aviation data firm. Overall, only half of Air Canada’s 31,168 flights were on time between June 19 and July 16, statistics provided by Cirium reveal. By comparison, 64% of WestJet’s 14,998 flights arrived on time. Flights are considered on time if they reach the airport within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time. The numbers contrast with on-time performances that range between 68% and 83% for the five biggest airlines in the US.

TOURS

Contiki has announced its first ever trip to South Korea. The nine-day “South Korea Soul” itinerary begins and ends in Seoul and includes a high-speed rail journey to Busan, plus a stopover at Jeonju – the UNESCO World Heritage town known for its traditional ambience and local hospitality. “Over the past few years, South Korea has become a powerhouse for popular culture,” says Taryn Welsh, Operations Director, Asia at Contiki. “It’s now one of the most sought-after travel destinations among 18-35s globally, thanks in no small part to movies and TV shows…”

In 2024, Intrepid will also offer four new trips to Morocco, including a rare venture through Morocco’s “best kept secret,” the Happy Valley, or Ait Bougmez region of the High Atlas Mountains. Other new trips include the eight-day “Classic Morocco” and “One Week in Morocco: Sahara & Atlas Mountains” and five-day “Mt Toubkal Long Weekend,” the latter enabling guest to clime the highest summit in North Africa.

HOTELS

Accor‘s presence in Japan is set to double. Conversion of the hotels will occur throughout 2024, after which the properties will operate under the aforementioned Accor brands.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar is the first hotel in Puerto Rico to partner with El Yunque National Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System. This partnership will allow guests to donate directly to the national park’s conservation efforts when they book their stay, and the resort will also feature an exhibition in the lobby to educate guests on the unique history of the rainforest and encourage them to experience the wonders of the park. Future opportunities are in the works to expand the partnership.

RESORTS

Velas Resorts says its new property, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, will open in late 2023. The all-inclusive boutique hotel will be Velas Resorts’ third property in Mexican resort destination. For adults only, the resort will feature 79 spacious rooms, with a private terrace, living area with sofa, walk-in shower and jacuzzi, two queen or one king size bed, daily stocked premium minibar, and 24-hour personal concierge. Guests will also have access to sister property Grand Velas Los Cabos’ five gourmet dinner restaurants led by top chefs and four bars with no additional charge.

Located on the Northern Coast of the Dominican Republic, Aman’s oasis is a wellness-forward resort inspired by the shamanic healing traditions of the Taínos. New this season, guests have the opportunity to reap the empowerment of nature with two new immersive, multi-day journeys known as Atabey Connection and Anichi Healing – wellness journeys that draw on Taíno wisdom to transform each individual’s state of consciousness, awaken their inner purpose and reignite their passion for life.

Joyned Crowned Most Successful Scale-Up at Hustle Awards - TRAVELINDEXIsraeli travel tech start-up Joyned has been recognised for the company’s outstanding growth at this year’s Hustle Awards, where they were crowned as winners of the Most Successful Scale-Up category.

The prestigious award ceremony took place on Thursday 20th July at the iconic Steel Yard in London. Competition was high and the judges noted the exceptional calibre of entries this year across multiple categories.

The Most Successful Scale-Up category included nine shortlisted companies, with Joyned receiving the highest scores from the judges. The award was collected by Oz Erez, solutions specialist at Joyned and was presented by James Day, Sales Leader at Cisco SMB UK and comedian, Maisie Adam.

Joyned has rapidly expanded over the past year, having increased their Gross Booking Value by more than ten times over between Q2 2022 and Q1 2023, and with a client base including travel industry giants such as Amadeus, RIU Hotels and OYO Vacation Homes.

The team has also grown significantly in recent months, welcoming several senior level hires including Doron Luder as VP of Sales and Lior Zysman, former CEO of Playtech Israel, who joined as VP of Customers. Oren Elbaz, former founder of TinyTap (acq. by Animoca Brands) was also welcomed as Joyned’s new Head of Design, and will lead the UI/UX development of Joyned Booking during the next phase of growth.

Commenting on Joyned’s successes to date, the Hustle Awards judges said ‘we were very impressed with Joyned, as they gave clear evidence of impressive growth, with so much potential to continuing developing in future.”

Joyned’s CEO, Jonathan Abraham, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Joyned has been named as the Most Successful Scale-Up at this year’s Hustle Awards. I’m very proud of the consistent growth Joyned has demonstrated over the past year which is testament to the calibre of our incredibly talented team. It really shows that what we’re doing in the travel sector space is resonating with some of the industry’s biggest companies and influencers.”

Joyned Booking enables groups of friends and family who want to go on holiday together to discuss and make purchases directly on a travel site in a secure, private, online space. Through its cross-website, live experience, travel sites are able to own their customers’ natural social engagements directly on-site, typically increasing travel sites’ conversion rates by four times their baseline and increasing average order value by 25%.

“Joyned is currently the only company providing an off-the-shelf solution to the travel sector that offers a seamless, collaborative booking experience. Our offering is unique and highly valued by customers and OTAs alike. Our growth to date has been exceptional and we can’t wait to see where the company goes next,” adds Jonathan.
