BOTTICELLI’S VENUS IS AN ‘INFLUENCER,’ AND ITALY IS NOT AMUSED

600 275 wttc2

The Italian tourism ministry thought it had a sure-fire way to bring travellers into the country: turning a 15th century art icon into a 21st century “virtual influencer.” But the ad campaign has faced significant backlash – with critics calling it a “new Barbie” that trashes Italy’s cultural heritage.

The digital rendition of Venus, goddess of love, based on Sandro Botticelli’s Renaissance masterpiece “Birth of Venus,” can be seen noshing on pizza and snapping selfies for her Instagram page. Unlike the original, this Venus is fully clothed. The influencer claims to be 30, or “maybe just a wee bit (older) than that.”

The year-long campaign, produced by national tourism agency ENIT and advertising group Armando Testa, is estimated to have cost €9 million (about $13.3 million), according to ENIT CEO Ivana Jelinic.

Jelinic said that the campaign was designed for overseas markets to attract younger tourists.

“We liked the idea that it would be a work of art that is timeless,” Jelinic stated, adding that Botticelli’s Venus “seemed to us like an immortal icon who could represent Italy well.”

But art historian and activist Livia Garomersini says the tourist campaign “trivializes our heritage in the most vulgar way, transforming Botticelli’s Venus into yet another stereotyped female beauty.

Already the new Venus has been memed mercilessly online, appearing among trash bins, alongside Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, and in other less-than godly places.

The criticism extends beyond the use of a masterpiece to the manner in which the campaign was orchestrated, including its use of stock images and other gaffes like a promotional video featuring a winery in Slovenia, used as a stand-in for Italy.

An even greater sin for many is the campaign’s slogan, “Open to Meraviglia” (‘Open to Wonder’), because it mixes English into an Italian tourist campaign even as the country’s government seeks to protect the Italian language as a pillar of its culture.

There are other language faux pas.

On the campaign’s website, an automatic translator turned Brindisi, a southern Italian port town, into its literal English definition: “Toast,” according to Matteo Flora, a professor at the University of Pavia. That part of the website has now been obscured.

“Let’s not talk about the creativity point of view,” said Flora, “You may like (the campaign) or not, but on a technical point of view, it has been… a sort of avalanche of problems.”

That includes a failure to secure domains, allowing anyone to snatch the material and mock the project with it.Flora said the campaign also wasted money. The campaign’s creative team chose to use the “intelligence of human creativity,” rather than artificial intelligence, to build the virtual Venus – but Flora showed how he could quickly come up with a similar campaign using AI at a cost of €20. His social media posts have been shared by thousands of people.

The use of a likeness of Botticelli’s masterpiece has been lambasted by art historians as well, who say it vastly diminishes the beauty and mystery of the 15th century original.

“Perhaps Botticelli would not be happy about this,” said Massimo Moretti, a professor of art history at the University of Rome, Sapienza.

Any use of an iconic image like the “Birth of Venus” risks striking a cultural nerve, marketing experts say.

“The more you try to alter something that’s historic, probably the greater the outcry,” said Larry Chiagouris, professor of marketing at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business. “People are going to say, ‘You’re changing the culture. You’re changing who we are, because it’s part of our history.’”.

The Uffizi Galleries, which houses Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” in Florence, declined to comment on the campaign.

For the creators of the campaign, however, any press is good press.

“It has become so viral,” said Jelinic of ENIT, adding that “web users have made her come alive” even when placing the new Venus in unglamorous places.

“I find (it) interesting in terms of social communication,” Jelinic said. “Our campaign is more appealing than (critics) want to admit.”

Tourism officials plan to expand the campaign through the use of billboards as well as video screens in airports and railways.

Created for business travelers around industrial and logistic hubs, the August opening of HIIVE Binh Duong marks the brand’s Southeast Asia debut.

The 172-room hotel – HIIVE Binh Duong – is well located in the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park 1 (VSIP 1) in Thuan An, Binh Duong. The hotel is near Aeon Mall, Song Be Golf Resort, and just an hour away from Ho Chi Minh City’s international airport.

With interiors and facilities to support both work and leisure travel, the HIIVE hotel features spacious rooms for longer stays, flexible meeting rooms, co-working spaces, an all-day dining restaurant, a sports bar, a golf simulator, a 24-hour fitness center, and guest laundry facilities on every floor.

“There has been a steady increase of foreign investment and business travel into Vietnam, with Binh Duong quickly emerging as a main manufacturing hub located just outside Ho Chi Minh City,” said Christopher Hur, President of Lodgis Hospitality Holdings Pte. Ltd.(“Lodgis”), the parent company of Fusion.

“The strong growth in business travel and demand for international standards of service and accommodation makes HIIVE an ideal offering. We look to establish HIIVE as the preferred hotel for today’s regional business traveler.”

This 11-floor property offers natural lighting and a design with contemporary colors. The hotel’s common areas are designed with a stylish industrial vibe, while rooms use softer and more neutral tones.

“In an era when the boundaries between work and play have become blurred, we wanted to create spaces that satisfy these two needs,” stated Peter Meyer, CEO of Lodgis and Fusion Hotel Group.

The hotel’s three meeting rooms feature whiteboard walls, flexible room layouts, and modern audio-visual technology. Meeting spaces vary in size with the ability to host small groups with up to 100 people in the largest room. Co-working spaces range from intimate areas for quiet focus to communal spaces that encourage guest mingling.

Guests can opt to explore regional Vietnamese dishes at Zest Restaurant or the Dzo Dzo Sports Bar featuring large flat-screen TVs, a billiards table, dart board, and a selection of craft beers, cocktails, and bar snacks.

The hotel also offers a state-of-the-art golf simulator with the option to play 72 acclaimed golf courses. Moreover, there is a modern 24-hour gym with cardio machines, weights, and yoga equipment.

Five room categories are on offer at the hotel. The entry category, Superior, is 26m2 and features a plush king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom, and a dedicated working space. The Deluxe category at 38m2, makes up the majority of the rooms available and includes a living area. The Premium Deluxe version features a bathtub and private balcony. The Suites are 50m2, making it ideal for long-stay guests, featuring a fully equipped kitchenette and a living room space.

Rooms have energy management solutions that monitor, analyze, and automate the room environment, as well as reflective window coverings and heat-proofing to keep internal temperatures constant. Other standard HIIVE practices are LED lighting, water-efficient sanitary ware, and interior finishes of renewable materials.

“As Fusion continues to grow, sustainability remains paramount in all our new properties,” added Meyer. “Moreover, we’re standardizing practices at all HIIVE hotels to manage and limit our local and long-term impact on the communities in which we operate.

“The installation of a centralized water filtration system with refill stations helps to eliminate plastic bottle waste and reduce operational costs, as well as enhance employee and guest health.”

The second hotel, HIIVE Binh Duong New City (VSIP 2), is planned to open in Q1 2024.

Room rates start at US$85/night.

Thailand’s First INNSiDE by Meliá Hotel Celebrates Grand Opening

899 518 wttc2

Towering over Bangkok’s trendy On Nut neighbourhood, INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit has cut the ribbon on a host of remarkable facilities ranging from integrated co-working spaces to a sky-high transparent infinity pool and rooftop tapas bar.

Reaching 34 floors, the 208-room hotel celebrates its grand opening this month. It is Thailand’s first ‘INNSiDE by Meliá’ hotel and the fourth Meliá Hotels International property to debut in the kingdom after nautical-themed Meliá Koh Samui, wellness-inspired Meliá Phuket Mai Khao and urban hotel Meliá Chiang Mai opened in 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively.

INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit is the newest member of an eclectic collection of urban and beach INNSiDE hotels — in 14 different countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas — designed for those with curious minds who have a fluid lifestyle when it comes to work and leisure.

Situated at 1472 Sukhumvit Road, the new On Nut hotel is a 30-minute ride from Suvarnabhumi Airport and close to an array of services and attractions suited to business and leisure travellers including the On Nut BTS Skytrain station and Bangkok’s largest convention centre, BITEC.

The lifestyle hotel’s vast 32nd floor co-working space with soaring floor-to-ceiling windows offers a front seat to Bangkok’s sweeping skyline. Five playful meeting rooms and multifunctional areas designed to encourage creativity and productivity, such as the Big Ideas Space, underpin the INNSiDE brand and lend themselves to being mixed and matched for all sorts of bespoke social and corporate events.

Three diverse food and beverage outlets make for the hotel’s dynamic dining landscape. Together with the hotel’s jewel in the crown, an awe-inspiring infinity pool, The Giant Swing Pool Bar commands the 34th floor. Nestled between bar and pool, a compelling contemporary interpretation of Bangkok’s Brahman structure The Giant Swing is a dramatic photo backdrop.

Adjacent to the infinity pool is an expansive rooftop terrace, dotted with outdoor lounges and sunbeds, that evokes an Ibiza mood accompanied with panoramic vistas. Open from 10am until midnight, the open-air pool bar serves Mediterranean, Thai and international snacks and dishes such as INNSiDE’s Burger and cool beverages including imaginative cocktails.

By night, the pool bar becomes an upper-floor extension of the hotel’s 33rd floor LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar. Offering authentic tapas, Spanish wines, beer on tap, cocktails and signature sangrias, the tapas bar invites diners to embark on a culinary pilgrimage across Spain. Chef de Cuisine Laia Ferrer brings her Barcelona roots to the fore with a dynamic variety of local Thai ingredients embellished with Spanish flavours.

A spectacle unlike any other in Bangkok, tapas bar guests peer into the bottom of the infinity pool. The tapas bar’s design, including its striking angled lines and cabling, pay tribute to another iconic Bangkok landmark, Rama VIII Bridge. Open from 4pm until midnight, LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar’s signature dishes include Suquet de Peix Amb Romesco, Fideus a la Cassola, and Tiradito Basque.

In addition to drawing on Meliá’s Spanish origins and celebrating Spain’s gastronomy, the hotel’s dining landscape taps local roots with fresh, colourful Thai cuisine. The chefs at all-day dining venue “The Kites Eatery”, open from 6.30am-11pm, serve up central, northern, north-eastern and southern Thai cuisine a la minute using quality ingredients sourced from local farms.

Adorned with graphic glass walls depicting state park Sanam Luang, the Kites Eatery’s chic setting is also dominated by soaring windows giving way to stunning views of Bangkok. The hotel’s chefs serve a healthy buffet breakfast and a la carte menu from noon, as well as customised lunches and banquets for meetings and events. The Kites Eatery’s not-to-be missed dishes include Kites Pad Thai and Kites Satay.

A hip café and lobby bar seamlessly integrated into the 32nd floor’s coworking space, The Open Living Lounge is manned by a barista by day and bartender by night. Open from 7am-11pm, the lounge offers an easy grab-and-go menu and specialises in Thai and Western comfort food.

With drink trolleys in circulation, The Open Living Lounge’s offerings include, but are not limited to, grab-and-go barista coffee, morning pastries, cold-pressed juices, kombucha, and a Spanish afternoon tea. The lounge’s design takes cues from another Bangkok landmark, Wat Phra Kaew, with, for example, a golden counter inspired by Wat Phra Kaew’s traditional Thai decorations gilded in gold leaf.

Sleek, bright and predominantly white with understated rose gold accents, the hotel’s accommodations feel fresh with purpose and pizazz and offer ideal bases to retire to after a day of rummaging through Bangkok’s lively streets.  Anchored by work desks and DreamMaker mattresses, in-room perks range from complimentary minibar items, organic bathroom amenities and natural cork yoga mats to 50-inch TVs, Wi-Fi and USB chargers. Rooms on the upper floors afford great views of the Thai capital.

Ranging from a convenient 20 sqm to an ample 64 sqm, the hotel’s eight accommodation categories fall under two umbrellas – ‘INNSiDE Room’ and ‘The Townhouse’.  The ‘INNSiDE Room King’ and ‘INNSiDE Room Twin’ are each 20 sqm and feature a king-size bed and twin beds respectively, with the ‘INNSiDE Connecting Room’ at 40 sqm when one room with a king bed connects to another with two single beds. As their names suggest, the ‘INNSiDE Room King City View’ and ‘INNSiDE Room Twin City View’, each at 20 sqm, located on the hotel’s upper floors, offer full length windows on the capital city’s constant movement.

Boasting stunning city views, separate living area, bathtubs and showers, Chromecast, coffee maker and free premium minibar with local beer, ‘The Townhouse’ and ‘The Townhouse City View’ are each 40 sqm. ‘The Townhouse Two-Bedroom’ is 64 sqm.

Room service is available 24/7. The hotel offers a 24-hour Infit Gym and a concierge service. Its range of sustainability efforts include a ban on single-use plastic, recycled glass bottles for drinking water and biodegradable takeaway boxes, in-room paper and plastic free collaterals and complimentary organic amenities.

“Our hotel may well be the new kid on the block in Bangkok yet we offer a completely new hotel experience in one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities,” said Ignacio Martin, Meliá Hotels International Managing Director for Asia Pacific. “True to its destination, this sensational hotel gives guests the freedom to connect or disconnect among an independent community.”

“With our cool coworking spaces, creative meeting rooms, amazing infinity swimming pool and rooftop bar, authentic Spanish tapas bar and then some, all in the heart of On Nut, our hotel offers far more than just a trip,” said the hotel’s general manager Aarron Nelson. “We’re ready to welcome curious and adventurous travellers who seek something different and dynamic; the opportunity to explore and share experiences, the flexibility to seamlessly move between work, leisure and wellbeing, and time to relax too.”

A 15% off introductory offer on room rates applies from July until October 2023 to celebrate the hotel’s opening.

HEAT KILLS, BUT ALSO THRILLS: The world’s hottest tourist destination

600 275 wttc2

Despite its forbidding name, and extreme temperatures, tourists are flocking to Death Valley National Park, the infamous desert landscape on the California-Nevada border.

But as temperatures climbed past 53.33 C (128 F) Sunday during a heatwave across the southwest US, the record-setting heat only seems to attract even more visitors willing to brave the elements.

Signs at hiking trails advise against venturing out after 10 a.m., though nighttime temperatures are still expected to be over 90 F (32.2 C). The hottest temperature recorded at Death Valley was 56.6 C (134 F) in July 1913, according to the National Park Service.

Signs at hiking trails advise against venturing out after 10 a.m., though nighttime temperatures are still expected to be over 90 F (32.2 C). The hottest temperature recorded at Death Valley was 134 F (56.6 C) in July 1913, according to the National Park Service.

Other parks have long-standing warnings for hikers. At Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, officials are cautioning people to stay off the trails for most of the day in the inner canyon, where temperatures can be 20 degrees hotter than the rim.

In west Texas, Big Bend National Park near the Rio Grande is expected to be at least 110 F (43.3 C). The National Weather Service has said it’s best to just stay off the trails in the afternoon.

The precautions vary across parks and landscapes, said Cynthia Hernandez, a US park service spokesperson. Certain trails might be closed if conditions are too dangerous. Alerts and restrictions are posted on websites for individual parks, Hernandez said.

Preliminary information form the park service shows at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes across the 424 national park sites. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead in his vehicle at Death Valley earlier this month.

Death Valley National Park emphasizes self-reliance over expectations of rescue. While rangers patrol park roads and can assist motorists in distress, there’s no guarantee lost tourists will get aid in time.

More than 1.1 million people annually visit the desert park, which sits over a portion of the California-Nevada border west of Las Vegas. At 13,848 sq. m., it’s the largest national park in the Lower 48. About one-fifth of the visitors come in June, July, and August. Many are tempted to explore, even after the suggested cutoff times. Physical activity can make the heat even more unbearable and leave people feeling exhausted. Sunbaked rocks, sand and soil still radiate after sunset.

“It does feel like the sun has gone through your skin and is getting into your bones,” said park Ranger Nichole Andler.

Others mentioned feeling their eyes drying out from the hot wind sweeping through the valley.

“It’s very hot. I mean, especially when there’s a breeze, you would think that maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face,” said Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Death Valley is a narrow, 86-m. basin that is below sea level but situated among high, steep mountain ranges, according to the park service’s website. The bone-dry air and meager plant coverage allows sunlight to heat up the desert surface. The rocks and the soil emit all that heat in turn, which then becomes trapped in the depths of the valley.

The park’s brownish hills feature signage saying, “heat kills” and other messaging, such as a Stovepipe Wells sign warning travellers of the “Savage Summer Sun.”

Still, there are several awe-inspiring sites that draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The eye-opening 183-m. Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a prime sunrise viewing spot.

Eugen Chen from Taiwan called the park “beautiful” and an “iconic … very special place.”

Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that sentiment.

“It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.

SMELLS LIKE TEAM SPIRIT: ACTA golf tourney brings industry together

600 275 wttc2

Though it is universally agreed that business is booming, the Canadian travel industry certainly still has its share of woes at the moment – though for one shining day in Milton, Ont., the rain clouds parted and the sun beamed down for close to 200 enthusiastic participants in ACTA’s 34th annual summer golf tournament.

Such was the prelude to the morning that registration was set up indoors in case the night’s wrathful rain lingered, but by the time golfers hit the (soggy) course at Royal Ontario on July 13, the sky was blue and all seemed right in the world.

Later, during her evening address, ACTA president Wendy Paradis would recount the association’s current activities and efforts: addressing an industry-wide labour shortage, including attracting new talent (especially young people); advocating for debt relief from the government for travel agencies; and channeling anger and “stopping some of the changes” that ACTA believes are coming in TICO’s ongoing and “not transparent” institutional review in Ontario.

But, “We are better when we work together,” she rallied (to applause) in her passionate address, and added, “We’ve got your back!”

However, this day was mostly about golf and its critical byproducts: renewing friendships; networking with dozens of industry sponsors; and the undying respect and support of suppliers for the travel agents in attendance – and those who weren’t.

And, of course, prizes – lots and lots of prizes – not least tickets for some lucky winners courtesy of lead sponsor Air Canada.

Barbados offered (rum) drinks and Myrtle Beach (back) massages amongst on-course activations, others skill testing games, and Antigua-Barbuda laid the soundtrack to the event with island rhythms and two colourful carnival dancers, while the tourism authority’s sales and marketing manager for Canada Tameka Wharton also dropped her own draw-dropping vocals on the proceedings for the second year running.

Ultimately and simply, Wharton explained her presence on the day: “We just wanted to be part of something good.”

And it was.

Here are a few images from the event:

Terrific trio: Joanne Scalamogna, Liz Akey, Kimberly Hartley
And, the winners…
