NEW KEMPINSKI OFFERS HAVANA IN STYLE

600 275 wttc2

The doors are once again open at the Gran Hotel Bristol in Havana after a longer hibernation period than expected caused by the pandemic. Having re-opened in February 2020, the all-new Kempinski property lasted only four weeks before having to shut down again due to the health-related shutdown of Havana.

Located in the heart of the city, a short distance from the National Capitol Building (El Capitolio), the unique boutique hotel is nestled between Old Havana (La Habana Vieja) and Centro Habana and is billed as “the ideal urban escape for a modern traveller” with its “nonchalant” style and superb location.

The property is the luxury hotel chain’s second in Havana.

Inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1930s, 162 comfortable guestrooms’ interiors are stylishly appointed with bright accents, clean lines, and contemporary furnishings. Each room features a flat-screen TV, an individual control panel and complimentary WiFi.

Four unique dining experiences feature a rich kaleidoscope of cuisines and entertainment. Crowning Gran Hotel Bristol are two unique restaurants, El Capitolio and El Diamante – the latter, also a bar, boasting panoramic views of Old Havana.

A destination of its own, the rooftop pool also provides panoramic views over the city and the hotel gym is fully equipped with the latest fitness equipment.

“Havana’s rich and vibrant cultural landscape was the biggest inspiration for Gran Hotel Bristol,” says Xavier Destribats, COO The Americas of Kempinski Hotels. “Transformation of this stylish new hotel was truly a labour of love and dedication. Our guests and residents will be immersed in an exclusive lifestyle experience, where relaxed urban vibes and culinary mastery breathe new life into this historical building.”

Thailand Maintains Fully-Reopen Entry Rules

500 286 wttc2

Thailand Maintains Fully-Reopen Entry Rules - VISITTHAILAND.net - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, January 10, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to clarify that Thailand continues to welcome all international tourists under the fully-reopen-to-tourism policy that was introduced on 1 October, 2022. Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, said “International travellers arriving in Thailand are not required to show proof of vaccination.”

Only visitors coming from or going to countries which require a RT-PCR test need to have health insurance covering treatment of COVID-19 in Thailand.

In addition, foreign tourists are not required to show ATK or RT-PCR test results.

As part of the full reopening to tourism, Thailand is also offering a longer period of stay for visitors. Effective through to 31 March, 2023, the period of stay is extended to 45 days (from 30 days) for tourists from countries/territories entitled for visa exemption, and to 30 days (from 15 days) for those eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VOA).

However, while Thailand is welcoming all visitors, a visitor source market may require incoming visitors including their own nationals returning home to have a negative PCR result.

Thus, Thailand is aiming to correspond with rules of these countries – among them are China and India. Therefore, passengers from a country that has requirements for RT-PCR test must have health insurance covering treatment of COVID-19 in Thailand.

With the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters‘ campaign, tourists the world over are invited to experience the kingdom’s myriad of wonderful existing and new tourism experiences, products and services.

ROUND-UP: Jan. 02-06, 2023

2023 kicked off with violence affecting tourists in Mexico, continuing news and views about travelling to and from China, the fallout from weather woes for airlines and passengers, a MSC Cruises milestone, and news of a big Comp Fund payout from TICO. Read on for the rest of last week’s wrap…

NEWS

The federal government advised Canadians in Mexico to limit their movements and shelter in place due to violence in the northwestern part of the country, including the popular tourist town of Mazatlan, after a security operation in which alleged drug trafficker, who is a son of former cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was captured. Dozens of military personnel and suspected cartel members were killed in a battle, civilian airliners shot at, and the airport closed.

New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh says the holiday travel woes that left thousands of passengers stranded at airports or struggling to find flights home show why there should be more competition in Canada’s airspace. He says the lack of choice for passengers is also making flying less affordable, and he’s calling on the Liberal government to find ways to make the airline industry more competitive.

On Dec. 20, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario’s (TICO) Board of Directors approved 43 claims against the Ontario Travel Compensation Fund totalling $201,928 to assist 86 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. The largest amount, $177,227, covers 28 claims to assist 50 consumers for Crystal Cruises; others – Jacco Tours, 12 claims to assist 26 consumers, totalling $11,515; Jet Airways, two claims to assist eight consumers, totalling $12,386; and Sunmed Holidays, one claim to assist two consumers, totalling $800.

TICO has also advised that Active Journeys in Toronto has had had its registration under the Ontario Travel Industry Act, 2002 revoked. The company operated as both a travel retailer and travel wholesaler and specialized in organizing biking, hiking, kayaking, rafting and multi-sport holidays in Asia, Africa, United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. TICO notes, “This travel agency and tour operator is no longer in business.”

BORDERS

Hong Kong started to reopen its border with mainland China on Sunday, allowing tens of thousands of people to cross from each side every day without quarantine. The city’s land and sea border checkpoints with the mainland have been largely closed for almost three years under China’s “zero-COVID” strategy.”

As of Jan. 5, passengers leaving China, Hong Kong and Macau were required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test when they enter Canada.

AIR

Canada Jetlines is introducing a rewards program that will enable enrolled travellers to purchase flights at a preferred rate on all current and future routes via Canada Jetlines’ international network. The program is offered through a partnership with the BOOM group.

IATA added its voice to the list of opponents to travel testing for travellers from China with the association’s director general calling the measures “knee jerk,” ineffective, and based on politics, not science.

Delta Air Lines will provide free Wi-Fi service on most of its US flights starting in February. The airline says that by the end of the year it will outfit more than 700 planes with high-speed, satellite-based broadband service from T-Mobile and plans to expand free Wi-Fi to international and Delta Connection flights by the end of 2024.

BY THE NUMBERS

On Jan. 1, Swoop reported its single largest travel day, operating 64 flights with 10,268 passengers. The milestone day saw the airline flying 37 flights across Canada, 14 to the US and 13 to destinations across Mexico and the Caribbean.

DEALS

In celebration of Atlantis Paradise Island’s 25th anniversary, the Bahamas resort is offering guests at The Coral, The Royal, and The Reef up to 25% off a 5+ night stay. The booking window ends Jan. 25 for travel through Dec. 15.

Alain St Ange to Publish his Amazing Autobiography - VISITSEYCHELLES.org - TRAVELINDEXVictoria, Mahé, Seychelles, January 7, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / Alain St Ange, the former Seychelles Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, has announced the upcoming launch of his new autobiography, “Alain St. Ange, My Journey”. Travelindex caught up with Alain to understand a little more about his new venture.

What inspired you to write an autobiography now?
My autobiography chronicles my life from the La Digue Island boy, who was brought up to become a loving father and grandfather, and who rose through the ranks with hard work, tenacity, and an un-wavering passion for Seychelles.

This is a personal story, not only about a life that I’ve been proud to live, but about my family that helped shaped me into the man I became.

My love for history is why I’ve attempted to place on record not only my life, but also the family tree from which I descended as well as that of my wife Ginette St.Ange née Michel. This work is inspired by the desire to continue to document and preserve the rich history of our families for future generations. It’s said that most of us will be forgotten within 4 generations; hopefully this book can help our descendants understand where we came from and to not forget those that came before us.

I am writing my autobiography now as time waits for no one, and I’m at the best stage of my life to reflect and dedicate the time required. I’m proud of my story and felt it may well inspire others. This knowledge kept me working and kept me digging through family historical records. Today, I realise more than ever before, the pains and tribulations of past generations. From as far back as those who were slaves, where even the family name was adapted to the one who freed them, to today only six generations later, to participate in the Nation’s Presidential Elections.

Can you share more detail about your autobiography?
My autobiography documents my life from birth, to education, through to my employment years including my time at the Ministry of Tourism. It includes details on my self-exile following termination of employment by Albert Rene in the early 1980’s, and subsequent re-employment into the Seychelles Tourism Board following a call by the Islands’ Tourism Private Sector Trade, through to my appointment as Minister of Tourism by James Michel.

The book covers my bid for the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) position and the subsequent saga that ended with a court case against the Seychelles Government. The book ends with a section dedicated to Politics in Seychelles, from the family’s participation in the colonial era, right up to my own bid at the last Presidential elections.

Alain St. Ange, My Journey documents the construction of the ‘Cabanes Des Anges’ Hotel at La Digue in 1972, including never-seen-before photos forwarded by previous guests from the 1970’s, until it was acquired under duress by the Government of Albert Rene. This section includes extracts documenting what transpired in the recent sessions of the TRNUC (Truth & Reconciliation Committee).

A lot of the book has been dedicated to documenting and preserving the family historical lines from the different branches of my extended St Ange (Saint Ange) Family of Seychelles, including the Mellon, De Charmoy Lablache, and Savy families. I’ve also taken the opportunity to document and preserve the rich heritage of the Michel and Hunt families (through my wife, Ginette St.Ange née Michel).

This section includes as many birth and death certificates that we could find, their final resting places where available, as well as photos and some of their individual life stories. It was important that they weren’t forgotten, and my book gave us the repository to properly preserve their legacies.

Interspersed throughout the book are all the major events that I lived through and documented as seen through my eyes. These events include the construction of the US Tracking Station, the reclamation of Victoria, the first and only visit by Her Majesty QE Elizabeth II, the construction and opening of the Seychelles International Airport, the subsequent first aircraft landing in Seychelles, the first Seychelles festival in 1972, the launching of tourism in Seychelles, independence of the Islands from Great Britain in 1976, the Military Coup in 1977, and the return of multi-party democracy in 1993.

The book is written in an easy-to-read format where each photo speaks a thousand words and supported by little anecdotes providing a real sense of the time.

Have you enjoyed the process of writing your autobiography?
The research undertaken for my autobiography enabled me to discover myself, as well as my family’s achievements, ensuring that the St.Ange family generations to come will better understand their proud legacy.

“YOU MAY SAY I’M A DREAMER, BUT I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE. I HOPE SOME DAY YOU’LL JOIN US, AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE.

I re-echoed these famous words of John Lennon at the opening of the first edition of the ‘Carnival International de Victoria’ in 2011, and even today, these words continue to guide me. I’ve lived a full life with no what-ifs and have remained true to myself throughout. What more can one ask from life?

Where can we get a copy of your new book?
We are in final discussions with publishing houses, and I am still finalizing details at this stage.

More information will be shared as soon as we go to print.
