Nguyen Gia Thien, the executive chef of Viet Deli, the company behind some of Vietnam’s most popular dining establishments, and chef Nguyen Thanh Tung, the executive chef overseeing HOME Hanoi, HOME Hoi An and HOME Saigon, have crafted the a la carte menus, each of which bring together street food, home-cooked favourites and refined dining dishes.

Highlights from HOME Hanoi’s new menu range from the likes of street food favourites ‘Bun Cha’ (grilled pork and noodles) and ‘Pho’ (noodle soup) to home-style classics such as ‘Than Bo Xao Ngong Toi’ (stir-fried beef with garlic bud’) and refined dishes including ‘Ca Chinh Nuong Rieng Me’ (char-grilled Eel fish with local spices).

Located at 75 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in a grand, four-story French villa, down a quaint lane that gives way to a private courtyard strung with lanterns, HOME Hanoi’s meticulously maintained villa’s interior is defined by brickwork, timber beams and Vietnamese art.

HOME Hoi An’s new menu brims with local specialties like ‘Cao Lau’ (traditional Hoi An noodles with char-siu pork), ‘Mi Quang’ (traditional Hoi An noodles with prawn and char-siu chicken) and ‘Thit Nong Heo Chien Mam’ (caramelized pork jowl with mam sauce) and refined options such as ‘Cua Sot Ot Hoi An’ (stir-fried crab with Faifoo chili sauce).

At 14 La Hoi Street in Hoi An’s Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Vietnam’s central coast, HOME Hoi An is near many of the town’s famed attractions including its street markets and Thu Bon River. In a villa bathed in a distinctive golden-hue, like most of the Ancient Town, the restaurant’s 19th century-themed interior is adorned with lanterns, vintage photography of Hoi An and more.

‘Hau Nuong Trung Muoi’ (grilled oyster with salted egg), ‘Tom Su Sot Ot So Diep Kho’ (steamed prawn with lotus leaf and hot rock salt), ‘Heo Quay Kho Nuoc Dua’ (glazed pork belly in coconut juice), and ‘Tom Hum Nha Trang Nuong Tieu Xanh’ (grilled Nha Trang lobster with green peppercorn) are among specialties served on HOME Saigon’s new menu.

Nestled in an alley at 216/4 Dien Bien Phu in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 3, HOME Saigon calls an historic French colonial villa home. Once the abode of South Vietnam’s vice president, the storied building’s preserved architecture and tasteful décor are rounded off by a green, shaded courtyard.

During the conference, a variety of key topics were explored, including the significant impact of catering to niche travelers on local economies. Discussions centered around community-driven sustainability, emphasizing strategies for integrating community needs into tourism development. The sessions also highlighted Phetchaburi’s unique culinary offerings, particularly its salty dishes, while addressing the complex relationship between local communities and tourism. The session by Mr. Arnon Wongchiang, Beverage Instructor, The Faculty of Management Science, Silpakorn University attracted a lot of attention as participants could taste the cocktails prepared with ingredients from Petchaburi Province. An interactive workshop focused on finding solutions to balance community interests with tourism growth, alongside initiatives aimed at encouraging community stewardship of coral reefs.

In the afternoon, participants delved into the role of music in enhancing cultural tourism and examined how food can serve as a central attraction for visitors. The importance of maintaining food safety while preserving traditional street food practices was also a critical topic. Additionally, discussions highlighted the significance of legacy in developing MICE destinations and offered a forward-looking perspective on emerging trends that could reshape travel experiences. Michelin Honours Banyan Tree Krabi with Two Keys - TRAVELINDEXKrabi, Thailand, November 14, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The Michelin Guide’s inaugural hotel recognition programme, Michelin Keys, has awarded Two Keys to Banyan Tree Krabi, a luxury resort on tranquil Tubkaek Beach on the Andaman coast of Southern Thailand.

The French-based Michelin Guide, famed for its accreditation to the most exquisite restaurants, has for the first time introduced a ranking system of “keys” to acclaim the most outstanding hotels in the world.

The 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Thailand included a total of eight Three-Key hotels (its highest decoration), 19 Two-Key hotels, and 31 One Key hotels. Each hotel had been anonymously visited and assessed by Michelin inspectors. Banyan Tree Krabi was among only four resorts or hotels in the Krabi region decorated with a key award.

According to the Michelin Guide, distinction is based on five criteria: excellence in architecture and design; quality of service; overall personality and character; value for money; and meaningful contributions to the local community.

In addition, the prestigious French-based guide also recommended the resort’s spa, Banyan Tree Spa Krabi, as one of the seven “most luxurious” spas in Thailand.

Banyan Tree Spa Krabi’s signature experience is The Rainforest, the region’s first luxury hydrotherapy facility, described by the Michelin Guide as a place “where tropical serenity meets holistic wellness”.

“Dive into a luxurious hydrothermal circuit featuring a Rain Walk, Steam Room, Sauna, Ice Fountain, Vitality Pool, Outdoor Cold and Hot Plunge Pools, Jet Pool, and Heated Bed,” the Michelin Guide said. “Let the Tropical Rainmist take you away as the soothing Rain Shower helps you relax before an invigorating body scrub boosts your skin’s moisture. Experience true tranquillity as a skilled therapist works their magic, kneading away all your tension.”

The spa has eight private treatment rooms, each with a selection of “Colour-Calm” choices. The theory behind colour-calm therapy is that the spectrum of light carries electromagnetic energy, and therefore affects energy or chakras.

This month, Banyan Tree Spa Krabi introduced a new treatment idea for guests — complimentary weightless therapy classes.

Weightless therapy is a holistic technique that involves floating in water, whereby the buoyancy helps alleviate pain and stress. Also known as flotation therapy, this sensory deprivation treatment is renowned for inducing a state of deep relaxation.

At Banyan Tree Spa Krabi, trained therapists guide and glide their clients gently upon the water in one-on-one sessions usually lasting half an hour.

“Weightless therapy is an alternative way to heal your body and mind,” said Banyan Tree Spa Krabi Manager Ms Montira Vichiankoo. “The meditative state obtained by floating in the water helps us relax as well as exercising muscles, joints and bones.”

As the permanent site for the annual Lucun Forum, Huzhou’s World Rural Tourism Town has become a symbol of sustainable rural revitalization and a hub for pioneering conversations on the future of rural tourism.

This year’s forum, hosted by the World Rural Tourism Council (WRTC) and jointly organized by CCTV, China Zheshang Bank, Zhejiang International Studies University, the Financial Services Committee of the General Association of Zhejiang Entrepreneurs, and the Zhejiang Rural Tourism Research Institute, explored the theme of financial empowerment as a catalyst for rural tourism development. Through strategic investments, partnerships, and new financial models, the event emphasized how finance can strengthen rural communities while preserving cultural heritage. Featuring high-level speakers, collaborative roundtables, and cultural performances, the forum provided a unique platform for exchange among international experts from the public and private sectors.

The 2024 Lucun Forum opened with an inspirational ceremony that celebrated Huzhou’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Distinguished speakers, including Mr. Chris Flynn, Executive Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Region of The World Tourism Council and Founder of the World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage, and Peter Semone, Chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, offered congratulatory remarks, in the spirit of collaboration and commitment to rural progress.

Throughout the three-day event, the Lucun Forum included several key meetings: the Lucun Forum, the Lucun Consensus Roundtable and the World Kids Wear Alliance Conference. These sessions welcomed more than 300 representatives from over 40 countries, creating a lively exchange platform to discuss rural revitalization, identify innovative practices, and foster partnerships. During the forum, participants jointly signed 11 cooperation agreements, furthering their commitment to advancing rural tourism and high-quality rural revitalization.

A central theme of the forum was financial empowerment as the foundation for rural revitalization. Mr. Lu Jianqiang, Chairman of Zheshang Bank, discussed the bank’s commitment to eco-development, emphasizing how financial institutions now provide not only funding but also strategic consultation to promote sustainable rural tourism. “Financial institutions are central to sustainable growth,” he stated, affirming the alignment of economic investment with environmental priorities.

Storytelling and Youth Engagement

The media’s role in promoting rural revitalization was also spotlighted. Mr. Guo Tong, Chairman of CCTV.com, announced a series of micro-documentaries designed to share the journey of rural communities, fostering greater appreciation and support for rural revitalization. “Telling the story of rural revitalization is essential to foster appreciation and inspire support,” Mr. Guo emphasized.

Financial Innovations as Pillars of Rural Development

A central theme of the forum was financial empowerment as the foundation for rural revitalization. Ms. Zhang Huanzhou, President of Zhejiang International Studies University, emphasized the critical role of rural financing in closing the urban-rural divide. According to Ms. Zhang, effective rural financing models can provide much-needed resources to develop infrastructure, support local businesses, and improve the quality of life in rural areas, ultimately creating stronger connections between urban and rural communities.

Ms. Zhang presented an innovative social insurance model designed for the rural tourism sector. In her proposed model, municipalities would cover 80% of insurance premiums while tourism operators would contribute the remaining 20%. This structure, she explained, could alleviate some of the financial pressures on rural tourism operators and serves as an example of how collaborative efforts between local governments and businesses can support rural tourism workers, create more sustainable employment opportunities, and stabilize the tourism economy in rural areas.

“Bridging the gap between urban and rural communities isn’t just about infrastructure,” Ms. Zhang noted. “It’s about ensuring that those who work in rural tourism have the same protections and opportunities as their urban counterparts.”

Youth Ambassadors of Hospitality: Showcasing Professionalism and Cultural Pride

Students from Zhejiang International Studies University played a vital role at the forum, serving as “Ambassadors of Hospitality” for the international delegation. Students like Mr. Liu Yipeng (Christopher), studying in the School of English Studies acted as interpreters, guides, and cultural advisors, ensuring a seamless experience for foreign attendees. With professionalism, warmth, and deep knowledge of the local culture, these student ambassadors not only facilitated communication across languages but also provided invaluable insights into the customs and heritage of the region, leaving a lasting impression on guests from around the world.

The 2024 Lucun Consensus Roundtable: A Vision for Global Collaboration

The afternoon session featured the 2024 Lucun Consensus Roundtable, opened by Mr. Gan Yongfu, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the WRTC. Mr. Gan warmly welcomed the delegation, saying, “We are happy to welcome you into the WRTC family. You are always welcome to return.” His impassioned remarks set an inspiring tone for discussions on building a shared future where rural tourism becomes a driving force in sustainable global development. Mr. Gan’s address sparked enthusiastic discussions about collaborative solutions to the challenges facing rural communities worldwide that lasted throughout the event.

Toward a Global Blueprint for Rural Tourism

The forum’s agenda included the release of three cornerstone publications: Research Report: Finance Promotes Rural Revitalization Characteristic Branding (Green Book), Research Report: Rural Tourism Promotes Rural Revitalization Characteristic Branding (Green Book), and the Huzhou Consensus: Finance Promotes Rural Revitalization. Together, these reports present strategies for using financial resources to support rural economies, build sustainable tourism models, and preserve cultural heritage.

Dr. Scott Michael Smith of Assumption University of Thailand, summed up the forum’s mission in his remarks: “Rural tourism represents more than just economic growth; it’s a pathway to elevate entire communities by preserving cultural heritage, empowering residents, and fostering sustainable development.” Dr. Smith went on to emphasize the unique strength of China’s model, saying, “This region celebrates its legacy, proving that cultural preservation and economic opportunity can indeed be woven together.” He highlighted the transformative potential of rural tourism, noting that, “Sustainable rural tourism honors the land, enriches the people, and invites travelers to not only see but to feel the heartbeat of a destination, providing exciting opportunities for youth to leave the field without leaving the village.”

A Visit to Zhili: New Attractions for Cultural Tourism

The day following the Lucun Forum, the foreign delegation traveled to Zhili for the founding conference of the World Kids Wear Alliance and the grand opening of the China Children’s Clothing Art Center. The center, Zhili’s latest cultural and tourist attraction, offers modern, interactive exhibits that take visitors through the history of clothing manufacturing and the region’s rich heritage in children’s wear. The center’s engaging, hands-on displays will be a popular destination for visitors interested in the intersection of fashion, history, and cultural tourism.

This is the eighth consecutive year in which the SHTM has been recognised as the world’s No. 1 by ShanghaiRanking, a globally respected institution. The School won first place in 2017, the first time ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects included the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category, and has held the top spot ever since.

ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities has been published annually since 2009 and is regarded as one of the three most influential and widely followed university classifications, alongside the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Earlier this year, the SHTM was recognised as world No. 1 in the 2023/24 Field Based Ranking of the University Ranking by Academic Performance Research Laboratory. The School has won first place globally in the “Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services” category for seven years in a row.
