S Hotels and Resorts Added to Thailand Sustainability Investment List 2022

500 287 wttc2

S Hotels and Resorts Added to Thailand Sustainability Investment List 2022 - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, October 31, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / S Hotels and Resorts PCL, the global hospitality company from Singha Estate PCL, has achieved a place on the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s (SET) list of Thailand Sustainability Investment (THSI) 2022, as its environmentally and socially responsible operations continue to gain recognition and momentum.

This year’s THSI list represents a group of 170 companies that place sustainability at the top of their agenda, taking into consideration the environmental, social and governance (ESG) of their business practices. The list is not only a badge of honour for the company, however; it is also used by institutions to make informed investment decisions and as a tool to analyse companies and advise potential investors. The THSI was compiled according to the results of sustainability assessment forms, and only SET-listed companies that exceeded the 50% threshold in each category were awarded a place.

S Hotels & Resorts met the THSI criteria due to its proven ability to integrate sustainability into business strategies and its commitment to drive value to its stakeholders. The group has pledged to integrate the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into every aspect of its operations, including SDG11, “Sustainable Cities & Communities”, SDG13, “Climate Action” and SDG14, “Life Below Water”, and believes that it can combat climate change by restoring mangrove forests and coral reefs which are efficient carbon sinks. These actions also preserve the beauty of nature and spread the benefits of tourism to everyone involved in the industry, including its local destinations.

At SAii Phi Phi Island Village for example, the dedicated Marine Discovery Centre leads critical projects such as coral propagation, mangrove planting and beach cleaning. This included a collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) to care for over 40 juvenile bamboo sharks and eggs at its dedicated Shark Nursery Pond – the first time that the PMBC had entrusted this important job to a private resort. At CROSSROADS Maldives meanwhile, the team is committed to working with local schools and communities. In the last 12 months alone, the integrated resort has welcomed over 700 local people – including Maldivian travel and tourism students – for educational trips to ensure that S Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to sustainability and conservation is passed down to the next generation.

Across its entire portfolio, S Hotels & Resorts has promised to abolish single-use plastic, reduce waste, recycle water, champion the use of sustainable and eco-friendly products, and introduce renewable energy to all of its properties. These initiatives led to the company being honoured with the “Green Leadership” award at the Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards 2020. SAii Phi Phi Island Village was the “Marine & Nature” winner in the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) UK Responsible Thailand Awards, while Santiburi Koh Samui has been certified as carbon-neutral by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, and both resorts were awarded the Green Hotel Award’s “Gold Level”.

“At S Hotels & Resorts, we are fully committed to sustainability. We understand that we have a responsibility to work in harmony with communities and preserve the planet for future generations. We are delighted therefore, to be included on this year’s THSI list. By providing potential investors with a guide to companies’ social and environmental operations, we can build a stronger corporate ecosystem that drives sustainable growth for the entire country,” said Dirk De Cuyper, CEO of S Hotels & Resorts.

The 2022 THSI list consists of 157 SET-listed companies and 13 MAI-listed companies, with a total market capitalization of THB 14 trillion (approx. USD 376 billion).

S Hotels and Resorts Public Company Limited, the hospitality arm of Singha Estate Public Company Limited, is a fast-growing, Thai-inspired company with an extensive international portfolio and world-class standards. Specialising in the management and investment of high-quality hotels and resorts in desirable destinations across the globe, S Hotels & Resorts has created a collection of its own distinctive lifestyle brands, whilst also partnering with the hospitality industry’s leading names. The company aims to set new standards for leisure and lifestyle through diversified business platforms and to enhance value for all its stakeholders based upon a philosophy of sustainable development and delivering benefits to local communities.

TourCert Set of Criteria for Destinations as GSTC-Recognized Standard

500 259 wttc2

TourCert Set of Criteria for Destinations as GSTC-Recognized Standard - TRAVELINDEXStuttgart, Germany, October 28, 2022 / TRAVELINDEX / The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is pleased to announce that the TourCert Set of Criteria for Destinations has achieved ‘GSTC-Recognized Standard’ status. The TourCert standard for destinations was established in 2014. All criteria catalogues of TourCert are based on the international quality and environmental management standards according to ISO and EMAS as well as the ISO guidelines for corporate responsibility (ISO 26000) and are also oriented to the international regulations of the GSTC.

The GSTC-Recognized status refers to the standard itself and means that a sustainable tourism standard or system has been reviewed by GSTC technical experts and the GSTC Assurance Panel and deemed the standard or system equivalent to the GSTC Criteria for sustainable tourism. It shows that the set of standards are based on the 4 pillars of the GSTC Criteria: Environment, Social, Cultural, and Management principles. This does not relate to the process of certification, nor to accreditation.

“We are convinced that business operations should also serve the common good. This requires clear rules, guidelines and incentives for all businesses and travel destinations. With our standards in tourism, we enable the implementation of binding environmental and social standards. The businesses and destinations we certify are exemplary in the area of sustainability. They are forerunners who show how the global sustainability goals of the UN Agenda 2030 can be achieved. They promote a future-oriented transformation of tourism. The GSTC recognition is a further acknowledgement of our work, and we see it as an encouraging sign in continuing to successfully demonstrate quality leadership,” said Marco Giraldo, Managing Partner TourCert.

“We commend TourCert on their future-oriented approach and commitment to sustainable tourism. By gaining GSTC-Recognized status for their set of standards for destinations, TourCert has provided the marketplace and their stakeholders strong evidence that they see sustainability broadly, to include the four pillars of sustainability: management, social, cultural, and environmental issues,” said Randy Durband, GSTC CEO.

Currently, 12 destination standards, 36 hotel standards, and 15 tour operator standards have achieved GSTC-Recognized status. The status offers the market proof that these standards adhere to international norms. GSTC Recognition does not ensure that a certification process is reliable, only that the set of standards used to certify are equivalent to the GSTC Criteria. GSTC-Recognized standard owners are encouraged to follow and complete the accreditation process, which assures that the certification process used to apply the standard meets international best practice, transparency, and rigor. A list of GSTC-Accredited certification bodies is available here.

About the GSTC
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) establishes and manages global sustainable standards, known as the GSTC Criteria. There are two sets: Destination Criteria for public policy-makers and destination managers, and Industry Criteria for hotels and tour operators. These are the guiding principles and minimum requirements that any tourism business or destination should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources, while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for conservation and poverty alleviation.

The GSTC Criteria form the foundation for Accreditation of Certification Bodies that certify hotels/accommodations, tour operators, and destinations as having sustainable policies and practices in place. GSTC does not directly certify any products or services; GSTC provides an accreditation program through its partner Assurance Services International to accredit Certification Bodies. The GSTC is an independent and neutral USA-registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that represents a diverse and global membership, including national and provincial governments, leading travel companies, hotels, tour operators, NGO’s, individuals and communities – all striving to achieve best practices in sustainable tourism.

PUBS, PATIOS & BARS: San Juan’s coolest, ‘secret’ cocktail bar revealed

600 275 wttc2

La Factoria is not easy to identify, even though it’s located in the centre of bustling Old San Juan. Blame it on the signage – or lack thereof – or perhaps, a decision to keep the venue’s former marquee rather than update it with a new one. But that’s part of the bar’s secret speakeasy vibe.

Nevertheless, La Factoria is a not-so-secret San Juan hotspot, not least for its notoriety as the video set for Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” but more importantly, its place on the World’s Best 50 Bars list, a designation the prompts immense pride, co-owner Robert Berdicia (banner photo) told Travel Industry Today.

WB50B offers the following justification for La Factoria’s No. 12 ranking (for North America):

“La Factoría might have poured fuel on Puerto Rico’s contemporary cocktail scene when it opened in San Juan in 2013, but inside the charming-yet-gritty bar feels as though it’s been around for centuries. The sprawling building hosts a surprising labyrinth of six drinking dens in total, each with different menus and themes catering to guests looking for a slightly different experience…

“The tie that binds each one together is a dishevelled-chic theme that weaves throughout the decor and outstanding cocktails made to showcase Puerto Rican sensibilities conjured up by celebrated bartender Roberto Berdecia.”

Salsa bar

Visitors enter off cobblestone San Sebastian street into the purposely dim atmosphere of the El Facto bar, which includes red velvet couches for a vintage touch at the back of the narrow space.

A doorway leads further into the den to the wine-focused Vino, intimate El Desvío, and Shing A’Ling, the latter boasting a small stage that comes alive with the city’s ubiquitous sounds of salsa at night, an atmosphere that dares patrons not to dance.

Meanwhile, Cuban-inspired cocktails are offered at La Cubanita, and El Final is a smaller, intimate space.

Discovering the various drinking spots inside is part of the charm, says Berdicia, who also runs a popular drinks festival in the city.

He notes that each bar is carefully curated to have it’s own ambiance and drink styles – craft cocktails of all descriptions are the raison d’etre – creating a venue that is “not your ordinary bar.”

Popular amongst locals, even more so than tourists, La Factoría is located on Calle de San Sebastián at the corner of Calle de San Jose in Old San Juan. With an otherwise utterly non-descript (shabby one might say) facade, look for the window opening to San Sebastián covered in stickers.

Note that drinking age at the establishment is 21, and closing time is late, going all night on weekends.

LISTENING IN: Ultimate Elton for the ages

1080 608 wttc2

The first time I saw Elton John it was in a crappy venue (the old Exhibition Stadium in Toronto) with crappy sound and out-of-synch speakers reverberating up the stands. Elton wordlessly entered, sat down, and launched into the haunting intro to “Tonight.” And in spite of the environmental limitations, you could hear a pin drop; goosebumps rising. In that moment I realized that there were performers, and then there were Eltons – a rare few who could silence a football stadium crowd with the plink of a pinky.

Years later I saw Reg (his real name) again in Las Vegas, deeper voice (throat surgery), hair transplant, giant inflatable penis flopping back and forth on stage, which was an over-the-top adornment even for the Rocket Man.

Indeed, the ‘80s and ‘90s weren’t kind to him in many ways, including musically, though that doesn’t detract from the generational talent of one of rock’s greatest singer-songwriters. Indeed, even now at age 75 he is still topping the charts (with Dua Lipa), even as he continues a farewell-to-performing tour that recently rolled through Vancouver.

But it’s the Elton of the early to mid ‘70s I will always strive to remember – an artist at the peak of his powers, and a man – “short, balding, myopic” – who Long John Baldry (the one who saved Elton John’s life in the song) once told me in an interview was the most unlikely rock star ever.

I consider “Captain Fantastic” a formative album of my youth, not least for the dramatic “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.” This performance of the song, at the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1976, says everything about Elton – more than I ever could. It’s a little longer than our usual offering, nearly seven minutes, but every note is worth it. Over 45 years later, it’s goosebumps all over again.

Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

When I think of those East End lights
Muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna, Lord, you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it’s one more beer
And I don’t hear you anymore
We’ve all gone crazy lately
My friend’s out there
Rolling ’round the basement floor

Someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me
Didn’t you dear
You almost had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

I never realized the passing hours
Of evening showers
A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I’m strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn outplayed by a dominating queen
Oh it’s four o’clock in the morning
Damn it
Listen to me good
I’m sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music is still alive

Someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me
Didn’t you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

And I could have walked head on
Into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your H.P. demands forever
They’re coming in the morning
With a truck to take me home

Someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)
Someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)
Someone saved my life tonight

So, save your strength
And run the field you play alone
Someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me
Didn’t you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)
Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)

Marriott International, Inc., today released its 2022 Serve 360 Report presenting data from 2021 and demonstrating its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts toward the company’s 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals. The Report can be accessed on the Serve 360 website.

In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, guides the company’s commitment to make a positive and sustainable impact wherever it does business, delivering value for associates, customers, owners, the environment, and communities around the world. Launched in 2017, the company is celebrating five years of Serve 360’s impact.

“While the last few years have transformed our industry, the resilience of Marriott associates and their dedication to our core value to Serve Our World has not only put us on the path to recovery, but renewed our support to the communities and environments where we live and work,” said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “Even during times of great challenge, including war, increasing climate crises, and the unprecedented impact of the pandemic, I am proud of Marriott’s continued dedication to its sustainability and social impact journey and commitment to our many stakeholders.”

In addition to showcasing data on company diversity, sustainable operations, volunteerism, and other ESG activities, 2021 highlights include:

  • Committed to set a science-based target and reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by no later than 2050.
  • Announced an accelerated goal to achieve global gender parity in executive positions by 2023 – two years ahead of the original goal – and established a new goal to achieve 25 percent people of color in executive positions in the U.S. by 2025.
  • Established the Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership to help build a pipeline of diverse talent by inspiring Black students to enter the hospitality industry, along with The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation and Howard University.
  • Launched the next iteration of Marriott’s human trafficking awareness training, which uses real-life scenarios to support our 2025 goal to train 100% of on-property associates to recognize and respond to potential situations of human trafficking.
  • Piloted Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy to provide guests the opportunity to create a positive impact across communities in the Asia Pacific region through environmental protection, community engagement, and marine conservation, which expanded to nearly 100 properties in 2022.

The Report also includes a letter from Capuano, which provides an update on the company’s ESG developments taking place this year and plans for the future. Additional highlights include:

  • Contributions to associates and their families affected by the war in Ukraine and support to humanitarian organizations providing on the ground relief, including over $3 million in hotel-level financial and in-kind support.
  • Commitment of up to $50 million to support historically underrepresented groups who typically face barriers in owning and developing hotels in North America. This new program, “Marriott’s Bridging the Gap,” also supports our company’s goal of achieving 3,000 diverse-owned hotels by the end of 2025.
  • Achievement of LEED Gold Core and Shell Certification for our new global corporate headquarters in Bethesda, MD, which includes a high-efficiency HVAC system, energy-efficient light fixtures with smart lighting controls, and more than 60 electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Donation of Marriott’s updated human trafficking awareness training to the hospitality industry to help other hotel companies and workers recognize the signs of human trafficking.
