Thailand’s First INNSiDE by Meliá Hotel Celebrates Grand Opening

899 518 wttc2

Towering over Bangkok’s trendy On Nut neighbourhood, INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit has cut the ribbon on a host of remarkable facilities ranging from integrated co-working spaces to a sky-high transparent infinity pool and rooftop tapas bar.

Reaching 34 floors, the 208-room hotel celebrates its grand opening this month. It is Thailand’s first ‘INNSiDE by Meliá’ hotel and the fourth Meliá Hotels International property to debut in the kingdom after nautical-themed Meliá Koh Samui, wellness-inspired Meliá Phuket Mai Khao and urban hotel Meliá Chiang Mai opened in 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively.

INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit is the newest member of an eclectic collection of urban and beach INNSiDE hotels — in 14 different countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas — designed for those with curious minds who have a fluid lifestyle when it comes to work and leisure.

Situated at 1472 Sukhumvit Road, the new On Nut hotel is a 30-minute ride from Suvarnabhumi Airport and close to an array of services and attractions suited to business and leisure travellers including the On Nut BTS Skytrain station and Bangkok’s largest convention centre, BITEC.

The lifestyle hotel’s vast 32nd floor co-working space with soaring floor-to-ceiling windows offers a front seat to Bangkok’s sweeping skyline. Five playful meeting rooms and multifunctional areas designed to encourage creativity and productivity, such as the Big Ideas Space, underpin the INNSiDE brand and lend themselves to being mixed and matched for all sorts of bespoke social and corporate events.

Three diverse food and beverage outlets make for the hotel’s dynamic dining landscape. Together with the hotel’s jewel in the crown, an awe-inspiring infinity pool, The Giant Swing Pool Bar commands the 34th floor. Nestled between bar and pool, a compelling contemporary interpretation of Bangkok’s Brahman structure The Giant Swing is a dramatic photo backdrop.

Adjacent to the infinity pool is an expansive rooftop terrace, dotted with outdoor lounges and sunbeds, that evokes an Ibiza mood accompanied with panoramic vistas. Open from 10am until midnight, the open-air pool bar serves Mediterranean, Thai and international snacks and dishes such as INNSiDE’s Burger and cool beverages including imaginative cocktails.

By night, the pool bar becomes an upper-floor extension of the hotel’s 33rd floor LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar. Offering authentic tapas, Spanish wines, beer on tap, cocktails and signature sangrias, the tapas bar invites diners to embark on a culinary pilgrimage across Spain. Chef de Cuisine Laia Ferrer brings her Barcelona roots to the fore with a dynamic variety of local Thai ingredients embellished with Spanish flavours.

A spectacle unlike any other in Bangkok, tapas bar guests peer into the bottom of the infinity pool. The tapas bar’s design, including its striking angled lines and cabling, pay tribute to another iconic Bangkok landmark, Rama VIII Bridge. Open from 4pm until midnight, LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar’s signature dishes include Suquet de Peix Amb Romesco, Fideus a la Cassola, and Tiradito Basque.

In addition to drawing on Meliá’s Spanish origins and celebrating Spain’s gastronomy, the hotel’s dining landscape taps local roots with fresh, colourful Thai cuisine. The chefs at all-day dining venue “The Kites Eatery”, open from 6.30am-11pm, serve up central, northern, north-eastern and southern Thai cuisine a la minute using quality ingredients sourced from local farms.

Adorned with graphic glass walls depicting state park Sanam Luang, the Kites Eatery’s chic setting is also dominated by soaring windows giving way to stunning views of Bangkok. The hotel’s chefs serve a healthy buffet breakfast and a la carte menu from noon, as well as customised lunches and banquets for meetings and events. The Kites Eatery’s not-to-be missed dishes include Kites Pad Thai and Kites Satay.

A hip café and lobby bar seamlessly integrated into the 32nd floor’s coworking space, The Open Living Lounge is manned by a barista by day and bartender by night. Open from 7am-11pm, the lounge offers an easy grab-and-go menu and specialises in Thai and Western comfort food.

With drink trolleys in circulation, The Open Living Lounge’s offerings include, but are not limited to, grab-and-go barista coffee, morning pastries, cold-pressed juices, kombucha, and a Spanish afternoon tea. The lounge’s design takes cues from another Bangkok landmark, Wat Phra Kaew, with, for example, a golden counter inspired by Wat Phra Kaew’s traditional Thai decorations gilded in gold leaf.

Sleek, bright and predominantly white with understated rose gold accents, the hotel’s accommodations feel fresh with purpose and pizazz and offer ideal bases to retire to after a day of rummaging through Bangkok’s lively streets.  Anchored by work desks and DreamMaker mattresses, in-room perks range from complimentary minibar items, organic bathroom amenities and natural cork yoga mats to 50-inch TVs, Wi-Fi and USB chargers. Rooms on the upper floors afford great views of the Thai capital.

Ranging from a convenient 20 sqm to an ample 64 sqm, the hotel’s eight accommodation categories fall under two umbrellas – ‘INNSiDE Room’ and ‘The Townhouse’.  The ‘INNSiDE Room King’ and ‘INNSiDE Room Twin’ are each 20 sqm and feature a king-size bed and twin beds respectively, with the ‘INNSiDE Connecting Room’ at 40 sqm when one room with a king bed connects to another with two single beds. As their names suggest, the ‘INNSiDE Room King City View’ and ‘INNSiDE Room Twin City View’, each at 20 sqm, located on the hotel’s upper floors, offer full length windows on the capital city’s constant movement.

Boasting stunning city views, separate living area, bathtubs and showers, Chromecast, coffee maker and free premium minibar with local beer, ‘The Townhouse’ and ‘The Townhouse City View’ are each 40 sqm. ‘The Townhouse Two-Bedroom’ is 64 sqm.

Room service is available 24/7. The hotel offers a 24-hour Infit Gym and a concierge service. Its range of sustainability efforts include a ban on single-use plastic, recycled glass bottles for drinking water and biodegradable takeaway boxes, in-room paper and plastic free collaterals and complimentary organic amenities.

“Our hotel may well be the new kid on the block in Bangkok yet we offer a completely new hotel experience in one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities,” said Ignacio Martin, Meliá Hotels International Managing Director for Asia Pacific. “True to its destination, this sensational hotel gives guests the freedom to connect or disconnect among an independent community.”

“With our cool coworking spaces, creative meeting rooms, amazing infinity swimming pool and rooftop bar, authentic Spanish tapas bar and then some, all in the heart of On Nut, our hotel offers far more than just a trip,” said the hotel’s general manager Aarron Nelson. “We’re ready to welcome curious and adventurous travellers who seek something different and dynamic; the opportunity to explore and share experiences, the flexibility to seamlessly move between work, leisure and wellbeing, and time to relax too.”

A 15% off introductory offer on room rates applies from July until October 2023 to celebrate the hotel’s opening.

HEAT KILLS, BUT ALSO THRILLS: The world’s hottest tourist destination

600 275 wttc2

Despite its forbidding name, and extreme temperatures, tourists are flocking to Death Valley National Park, the infamous desert landscape on the California-Nevada border.

But as temperatures climbed past 53.33 C (128 F) Sunday during a heatwave across the southwest US, the record-setting heat only seems to attract even more visitors willing to brave the elements.

Signs at hiking trails advise against venturing out after 10 a.m., though nighttime temperatures are still expected to be over 90 F (32.2 C). The hottest temperature recorded at Death Valley was 56.6 C (134 F) in July 1913, according to the National Park Service.

Signs at hiking trails advise against venturing out after 10 a.m., though nighttime temperatures are still expected to be over 90 F (32.2 C). The hottest temperature recorded at Death Valley was 134 F (56.6 C) in July 1913, according to the National Park Service.

Other parks have long-standing warnings for hikers. At Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, officials are cautioning people to stay off the trails for most of the day in the inner canyon, where temperatures can be 20 degrees hotter than the rim.

In west Texas, Big Bend National Park near the Rio Grande is expected to be at least 110 F (43.3 C). The National Weather Service has said it’s best to just stay off the trails in the afternoon.

The precautions vary across parks and landscapes, said Cynthia Hernandez, a US park service spokesperson. Certain trails might be closed if conditions are too dangerous. Alerts and restrictions are posted on websites for individual parks, Hernandez said.

Preliminary information form the park service shows at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes across the 424 national park sites. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead in his vehicle at Death Valley earlier this month.

Death Valley National Park emphasizes self-reliance over expectations of rescue. While rangers patrol park roads and can assist motorists in distress, there’s no guarantee lost tourists will get aid in time.

More than 1.1 million people annually visit the desert park, which sits over a portion of the California-Nevada border west of Las Vegas. At 13,848 sq. m., it’s the largest national park in the Lower 48. About one-fifth of the visitors come in June, July, and August. Many are tempted to explore, even after the suggested cutoff times. Physical activity can make the heat even more unbearable and leave people feeling exhausted. Sunbaked rocks, sand and soil still radiate after sunset.

“It does feel like the sun has gone through your skin and is getting into your bones,” said park Ranger Nichole Andler.

Others mentioned feeling their eyes drying out from the hot wind sweeping through the valley.

“It’s very hot. I mean, especially when there’s a breeze, you would think that maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face,” said Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Death Valley is a narrow, 86-m. basin that is below sea level but situated among high, steep mountain ranges, according to the park service’s website. The bone-dry air and meager plant coverage allows sunlight to heat up the desert surface. The rocks and the soil emit all that heat in turn, which then becomes trapped in the depths of the valley.

The park’s brownish hills feature signage saying, “heat kills” and other messaging, such as a Stovepipe Wells sign warning travellers of the “Savage Summer Sun.”

Still, there are several awe-inspiring sites that draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The eye-opening 183-m. Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a prime sunrise viewing spot.

Eugen Chen from Taiwan called the park “beautiful” and an “iconic … very special place.”

Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that sentiment.

“It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.

SMELLS LIKE TEAM SPIRIT: ACTA golf tourney brings industry together

600 275 wttc2

Though it is universally agreed that business is booming, the Canadian travel industry certainly still has its share of woes at the moment – though for one shining day in Milton, Ont., the rain clouds parted and the sun beamed down for close to 200 enthusiastic participants in ACTA’s 34th annual summer golf tournament.

Such was the prelude to the morning that registration was set up indoors in case the night’s wrathful rain lingered, but by the time golfers hit the (soggy) course at Royal Ontario on July 13, the sky was blue and all seemed right in the world.

Later, during her evening address, ACTA president Wendy Paradis would recount the association’s current activities and efforts: addressing an industry-wide labour shortage, including attracting new talent (especially young people); advocating for debt relief from the government for travel agencies; and channeling anger and “stopping some of the changes” that ACTA believes are coming in TICO’s ongoing and “not transparent” institutional review in Ontario.

But, “We are better when we work together,” she rallied (to applause) in her passionate address, and added, “We’ve got your back!”

However, this day was mostly about golf and its critical byproducts: renewing friendships; networking with dozens of industry sponsors; and the undying respect and support of suppliers for the travel agents in attendance – and those who weren’t.

And, of course, prizes – lots and lots of prizes – not least tickets for some lucky winners courtesy of lead sponsor Air Canada.

Barbados offered (rum) drinks and Myrtle Beach (back) massages amongst on-course activations, others skill testing games, and Antigua-Barbuda laid the soundtrack to the event with island rhythms and two colourful carnival dancers, while the tourism authority’s sales and marketing manager for Canada Tameka Wharton also dropped her own draw-dropping vocals on the proceedings for the second year running.

Ultimately and simply, Wharton explained her presence on the day: “We just wanted to be part of something good.”

And it was.

Here are a few images from the event:

The rhythms of Antigua and Barbuda
On course with Air Canada and friends
Fab foursome: Mike Baginski; Colette Trabucco, Creative Travel; Kimberly Langenberg and Ron Lonsdale, Collette
Terrific trio: Joanne Scalamogna, Liz Akey, Kimberly Hartley
And, the winners…

ROUND-UP: July 10-14 2023

600 275 wttc2

In last week’s news, ACTA rallied support for federal government financial relief, the Canada-US border was declared to be in “disarray,” the world’s biggest cruise ship completed sea trials, Lynx announced a new destination, and The Bahamas celebrated a major milestone.

NEWS

ACTA launched a survey to assess the retail industry’s capacity to pay back government loans issued during the pandemic, which currently comes due Dec. 31. The association says tight repayment terms are now proving impede travel business recovery across Canada. ACTA will aggregate the responses but will not reference individual travel businesses. The survey is open to all travel agencies, host agencies, and independent travel agents. Deadline for completion is Friday, July 28 at 3 p.m. EST. To take participate, click HERE.

Members of US Congress are growing concerned about what they say is a shortage of agents on the southern side of the Canada-US border that is causing “disarray” at entry points to the country. The reason, says New York Rep. Brian Higgins, is that there is a southbound surge of US Customs and Border Protection personnel being temporarily reassigned to help fortify the American border with Mexico, which has led to unstaffed kiosks and generally longer delays for those entering the country from the north.

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has launched consultations on proposed amendments to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) and Canadians are invited to contribute. The consultation period will be open for 30 calendar days ending Aug. 10 after which CTA will publish draft regulations that will be subject to further comment. To take part, click HERE.

Members of Unifor Local 114 working at the ‘Victoria Clipper’ are warning that the pace of bargaining for their next contract suggests that the Victoria-Seattle fast ferry service could be disrupted before the end of the summer. The union says Clipper workers are seeking to negotiate wage increases, adjustments to the scheduling system, and better job security. The union 25 workers at the Victoria side of the Clipper’s workforce in customer service, ticketing, baggage handling, and docking.

BY THE NUMBERS

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it intercepted 3,251 firearms – 92% of them loaded – at airport security checkpoints during the first half of 2023. The total represents an average 18 firearms per day at TSA checkpoints. The figure represents an increase from the first half of 2022 when Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) stopped 3,053 firearms at security checkpoints of which more than 86% were loaded.

AIR

Lynx Air announced a further expansion of its US network, adding non-stop flights to Tampa International (TPA) from both Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Montreal Pierre Trudeau International (YUL). Lynx will operate four services a week from both Toronto and Montreal, beginning Nov. 16 and 17, respectively.

American Airlines and JetBlue Airways will end their partnership in the Northeast US this week, after a judge ruled that the deal violates antitrust law.

JetBlue said Friday that it will end codesharing and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits on July 21.

CRUISE

The world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, has successfully completed its first open ocean sea trials. Silversea Cruises has opened general sales on its 140-day World Cruise 2026, ‘The Curious and the Sea.’ Calling in 70 destinations in 37 countries – more than any voyage in the company’s history – the six-continent sailing will feature a curated selection of exclusive events, three optional overland programs, and a range of S.A.L.T. culinary enhancements that will immerse travellers sailing aboard Silver Dawn deep into regional cultures with unique access.

World Culinary Awards Ceremony 2023 - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25RESTAURANTS.comBangkok, Thailand, July 14, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The 4th annual World Culinary Awards Ceremony will be hosted at Mezzaluna at Lebua State Tower in Bangkok, Thailand, where winners will celebrate their victory on 31 July 2023.

World Culinary Awards serves to celebrate and reward excellence in the culinary industry through our annual awards programme. World Culinary Awards™ is the sister event of World Travel Awards, itself inaugurated in 1994.

Receiving a World Culinary Award is a world-class achievement that provides you, the Winner, with the ideal marketing tool to promote your award-winning products and services ahead of your competitors.

This years awards will be held at the highly acclaimed and celebrated Mezzaluna at Lebua State Tower in Bangkok, Thailand.

About Mezzaluna
Because the finest ingredients are the freshest ingredients, Chef Ryuki’s seven-course tasting menus change with the seasons—with one exception. The menu’s only staple: his specialty wagyu beef, called “Exceptional Murakami” because it comes from a small breed of top-quality calves from his hometown in Niigata Prefecture. The calves are raised only on rice, straw and hay, plus a mixture of carefully selected compound feed. The result is exquisitely marbled, melt-in-your-mouth beef that you can only find in Japan—or here at Mezzaluna.

Chef Ryuki applies the same exacting care to sourcing each ingredient in every plate at Mezzaluna—from oysters to truffles to tea—many of them exclusive to Mezzaluna.

It’s the same care that goes into preparing each dish, to stocking our world-class wine cellar and to providing stellar service—ensuring that you have the meal of a lifetime.

Mezzaluna means ‘half moon,’ and here you feel like you could just about reach out and touch it. On the 65th floor of State Tower, Mezzaluna is the crown jewel of our vertical destination. With double-height windows surrounding the crescent-shaped dining room, each table offers the best views in Bangkok—not to mention its fine food. It’s all enough to leave you moonstruck.

Look out for details on the winners as they are published after the event, see who will be celebrating their success this year?

Fusion Resort Cam Ranh Welcomes New Culinary Director - TRAVELINDEXCam Ranh, Vietnam, July 11, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Fusion Resort Cam Ranh, a wellness-inspired property on Vietnam’s scenic south-central coast, has appointed a new culinary director, P.J. Bosman, to oversee the resort’s healthy and sustainable “farm-to-table” dining concept.

Bosman, a South African, joins Fusion following successful stints as an executive chef and culinary operations manager at other luxury hotels and resorts in Vietnam, and as a private chef for a royal family in the United Arab Emirates.

As head of Fusion Resort Cam Ranh’s culinary program, Bosman will also help to manage one of the largest resort farms in Vietnam—with more than 300 animals, a mango orchard, and a 3,000-square-meter herb and vegetable garden producing more than 40 kilograms of fresh homegrown vegetables daily.

“I want to source as much as possible from the on-site farm and the surroundings,” Bosman said. “We are now starting to plant numerous fruits and vegetables and will be able to harvest them in a few months’ time. We will always have something supplying the restaurants from the garden, as we focus on seasonality.”

Fusion Resort Cam Ranh is home to celebrated restaurants and unique dining opportunities, including the poolside Fresh restaurant serving a clean-living menu of Vietnamese and international favorites; Zen Bar with wood-fired pizzas, snacks and tapas; Breeze, which hosts distinctive pop-up meals and acclaimed visiting chefs; the weekly Beach Barbeque featuring fresh seafood, meats, salads and local Cam Ranh specialties under the stars; exclusive in-villa dining; and romantic candlelit meals for two.

Fusion’s strong wellness focus will also inform the menus under Bosman, who says that homegrown, seasonal and fresh produce will be hallmarks of the resort’s culinary program.

“My vision is to have a story for the menu: where the food comes from, why we are using certain produce and so on,” said Bosman, a graduate of The Culinary Academy in South Africa. “When chefs use the best possible produce our job is easy, as the ingredients speak for themselves.”

Fusion Resort Cam Ranh also established the Fusion Farm school where they teach classes daily, on a complimentary basis, to guests and employees’ children on how to care for animals and grow vegetables. Children also enjoy collecting their own free-range eggs for breakfast. All of their wet raw food waste is used to feed the animals, resulting in zero removal of waste from the property.

Ensaladilla de Txangurro, a crab salad elegantly served in a crispy cone. This delectable treat features a generous serving of mouthwatering crab meat salad, complemented by a creamy avocado sauce and a touch of spicy chili sauce.

Black Ink Croquettes, a bite-sized, Spanish-inspired delight. These croquettes are filled with well-seasoned diced squid, enhanced with the unique flavor of black ink. Accompanied by aioli sauce, they offer a tantalizing taste and aroma.

Pan Con Tomate with Jamón Iberico, a delightful combination of fresh Spanish tomatoes, garlic, and a topping of succulent Jamón Iberico. The ciabatta base provides a perfect canvas for the exquisite flavors. Simple yet delicious, this dish pairs exceptionally well with any drink.

Jamon Iberico, the famous ham made from the finest Iberico pork knuckle sourced from Spain. This exceptional delicacy boasts intense flavors within the meat. Cured for 36 months and served in thin slices, it delivers a mellowness that perfectly complements bread and beverage of choice.

Tomato Salad, a special tomato salad featuring exquisite heirloom tomatoes. These sweet and juicy tomatoes are enhanced by a house-special dressing, while bite-sized anchovies add an extra touch of deliciousness to the dish.

Hamachi Tiradito, showcasing expertly carved and marinated fresh Hamachi. With a secret in-house technique and special seasoning, the fish becomes juicier and more tender. It is served alongside a Garlic Cream Sauce that elevates the flavors to new heights.

Octopus Tentacles, sourced from the Atlantic Ocean and grilled to perfection, the tentacles acquire an enticing color and aroma. Accompanied by bite-sized potatoes and bell pepper sauce, this dish is a true delight.

Beef Cheek, made from Australian beef cheek. Slow-cooked for six hours, the meat becomes tender, melting in your mouth.
